They say that those who have been hurt the most are those who wear the biggest smile. Mingyu was like a happy virus. He always felt the need to make others smile along with him. Even in the darkest moments he would still find a reason to smile and would it be the slightest ray of hope. He would always be silly around his friends and trainee colleagues and never admit if he was be struggling. His positivity was one of the things his friends envy hm for the most. It was up to the point of nativity that mingyu always found a reason to continue smiling. He believes in karma, the universe leading him into the future he will deserve. He trusts his destiny blindly and rides the rainbow of trust to his next chance.

 

„Everything happens for a reason.“

is his life motto and if something bad happens, he stands up, dusts off the dirt and never looks back at it. He simply doesn‘t understand the need to grieve on what you can’t change. So he will concentrate on the present and have faith in the future. Knowing his time to shine will come.

 

„Hey, you okay?"

He is an enormous empath. He will instantly know something is wrong and understands the feelings of others immediately, without having to experience them. He helps where he can, giving out pep talks and motovation with every breath. He believes that mental health is way too overseen in this industry and tries to meet up with all the trainees at least once a week to talk about their problems. At first they were very much against it, laughing it off as gay and childish, but as time went by they all opened up and now they meet regularly to talk about their hardships and problems. He genuinely cares for every human being and especially for his friends. He will fight for and protect them with a wall of loyalty and a fathers heart. On the other side of his happiness, quirkyness and silliness, he is very mature for his age. When the time comes he feels the need to stand up for his friends, trying to make peace between the two fronts of the fight. This quality always puts him in a leader function, thinking rationally before speaking, appealing to the good side of humans and trying to make them understand that each point of view can be right.

 

„Nope, you guys go ahead. I'll stay and practice some more." 

He himself is a perfectionist. Since he is not completely healthy and has to visit the hospital many times, he works twice as hard to catch up to the others. The doctors aswell as his parents are not very fond of his decision but Mingyu believes in his dreams and that everything will work out fine. 

 

„I know I'm hurting myself. But this is important to me!" 

Ever since he started training at bighit, his health has become less and less important. He wanted to prove his parents, friends, bighit and Korea, that he can do it. He is a very pridefull person but only when it comes to dancing.

 

„Like that last time, when you locked me out"

He will remember EVERYTHING. Something you did, something you said. Oh, you thought nobody saw how you pulled a bugger out of you nose and ate it? Trust me, he saw. He might not tell you he saw right away, but when the time comes, he will. Espeacially if you did something bad or injustice wise, he will get back at you with it.

 

„I know I'm a hypocrite. But only a lil' bit!"

You mustn't lie - but he lied to his parents..

"There is no study that coffee is bad for your heart!" .. "There is ? Well, I don't care."

He loves coffee. And even though there are some studies who warn people with heart diseases to control their intake of coffee, he will not start the day without an americano. If you look at it that was you might think he's a hypocrite, talking about health and all and then fully neglecting his own, but he's just to stubborn to adjust to that.

When Mingyu was small he was diagnosed with a con heart defect. He was taken to the hospital very often especially as a baby and infant and his parents spend all their savings on surgeries and medicine. His parents were furious when he told them he wanted to be an idol. They didn’t support him in any way and wanted him to become a lawyer or a doctor. But he knew he wasn't going to be a normal man with a normal job. Sure he understood his parents and admits that he would probably have done the same thing if he had a child. But he wasn’t going to give up on his dream. After some debating with his parents they agreed on him doing rapping as a hobby, since they didn't see a health concern in it for him, as long as he holds his A's in school. Dancing was on the other hand prohibited. They knew how much he loved dancing, espeacially contemporary. He would watch dancing shows on TV alot, trying to convince his parents, but they would always ignore him or start an argument about his situation. So Mingyu did, what he needed to do. He fufilled his deed, went to school and got good grades, but afterwards he train his dancing in secret. He trained at the backside of the school, the tracking field, the karaoke bar and later on at the bath house where he cleaned at night. His parents always thinking he was staying at cram school or a library. Sure he felt bad lying to them, but he wasn‘t going to stop his pursuit of happiness.

 

When he was 19 years old, finally off age and "ready" for college he told his parent he wasn't going to take the CSAT but will audition for this program called boys24. He was accepted and his parents were furious about it. He went nevertheless and did pretty well, being one of the  favourites of the show. But halfway through his health drastically dropped and he had to quit to admit himself to a hospital. He was used to having some issues with his health thoughout his childhood and teenage years, but the scedule of the show was definitely something different. And his heart noticed. He had to have another surgery, forcing him to put a halt on his dream, his parents only being assured in their fear.

 

After a long time of not being able to practice (his parents made sure of that, never leaving him out of eye sight for long) he finally was back to his "normal" health. He had contacted some entertainments and hoped that some would actually consider taking him after the show but all this time nobody was interested. They explained to him that his condition was to risky for them and that he would cost them too much. He managed to talk to his parents to take some time off (actually they wanted him to retake the CSAT as fast as he could ) and begged to stay at the countryside with his aunt for the time being (he said the countryside would be better for his health ). His aunt knew of Mingyus dream and although she had the same concern as her sister, she let him practice singing and dancing as he wanted. She was still watching him though. Time went by and he auditioned for another TV project. Produce 101 was his big hope and they accepted him right away. Later on during the show he realised that they only took him in for PR and pushed him into the spotlight to make publicity for themself. Produce101 adopting a sick boy and helping him reach his dream. But he didn't care. He enjoyed the spotlight. He reached the finale but was eliminated as 13 th member. He was devastated, really thinking he would make it but he was again let down. But being the person he is, he still had his hopes up, learning from his mistakes and believing everything had to happen this way. Soon after the show he got a love call from bighit - and so his real story began.

trainee life at bighit — 

Mingyu got a call from BigHit soon after Produce101. His parents of course didn't agree to his decision to sign the contract. But they couldn't do anything about it. Just like the past times with Boys24 and Produce - he was off age and was able to decide on his own. Ever since he joined he would be the first one to wake up and train and the last one to go to sleep. Since he had been in some programs before he trains harder, since he feels that everyone expects more of him. He also feels responsible for BigHit, since they signed a contract with him even though they knew his condition. He wanted to prove them that it wasn’t a mistake to invest in him, he wanted to make sure, that he was doing them justice. He would always greet staff with his typical smile and a 90 degree bow, nevertheless his condition or the time. He would sometimes buy them little gifts, thanking them for working so hard. He was loved in BigHit even though he hasn't been a traines for long. The staff often said that he was the "perfect son in law".

Being so well recieved by everyone might aswell make you think that there had to be haters. Trainees, that were jelous or some sort of drama. But Mingyu never recieved any bad feelings in any form (but those new freelancers, they don't like him).

▪ They always wanted the best for their son. He was their only child, since their blood wasn't compartible with one another and his mother also almost dies at his birth. He was always so special to them and when they figured out, that Mingyu was sick, they tried everything to make him healthy again. His dream of being an idol was a thorn in his parents eye and they tried to make him choose a career, which is not so dangerous. But they failed. His father, though, supported him in secret, knowing that his "time off" at his sister in law was just an excuse. He let him go nevertheless. He knew that he was happy doing it, and that his son was now old enough to decide what's right for him. He is very proud of his son for fighting what he loves so in contrast to his over protective wife, he made a deal with his sister in law, to keep an eye on him during his stay.

 

My feelings are the most sincere. 

opinion on the bighit boys —

He loves his boys. He was the last one to sign with bighit, but they welcomed him very warmly. He is very mature for his age, so he has a need to care for them, but also is young and quirky enough to play around with them, when the time calls for it.

opinion on the freelancers —

They don't like him. He tries though, he tries to get along with them, but they are really not easy to approach. Sometime, in one on one situations, he maybe manages to get a little comfortable around them and vice versa, but together, they seem like the cheerleading club at your old high school. A little intimidating. Funny thing, that one day during a talk with one of the freelancers, he found out that they saw the bighit guys the same way. It's odd what misscommunication and prejudices lead to.

"hey, please introduce yourself."  

▪ Mingyu stands up and bows to everyone in the Room (90 degree) while introducing himself "Hello. My name is Bae Mingyu. I'm 20 years old. Please take good care of me."

 

"what made you want to become an idol and why did you sign under bighit?"  

▪ "I loved dancing and rapping ever since I was small, so it figured for me to become an Idol. I actually was scouted by BigHit, which I am very grateful for. Of course, you sign."
 

"do you think that you'd have the same chances as with bighit if you were signed under another company?"  

▪  His face looked a little confused. "I am not really sure... I'm actually very confident in what I do and believe that everything happens for a reason, so I never really think about what and if's."
 

"what would you say is your biggest strength and your biggest weakness?"  

▪ "I'm a really good counselor." He chuckles. "I believe it's important to be mentally happy so I try to help others as much as I can" He scratches himself at the back of his head. "Might also be my weakness, since I'm kinda naiv for believing in the good in people. Might come back to me one day.."
 

"how far would you go to succeed in the show?"  

▪ "Do you mean like, sabotaging others and gossip?" He waves both hands in front of his body as a defence. "I wouldn't do that. I might come off as naiv, but I believe in giving before recieving. I sure would do anything considering myself, pushing to my limits and trying to be better than the past me. But when it comes to others, nope." He shrugged his shoulders.
 

"what do you have that makes you a standout from all the other bighit trainees?"  

▪ "I was the last to get signed from us all, but I managed to catch up pretty god. I'm a fast learner and even the other trainees mentioned my ambition as a-" He put the next words in quotation marks "hella craycray. "
 

"that's it so far. do you want to add anything else?"  

▪ "Yes" His eyes lightend up as he watched the little table standing beside the interviewer. "Where did you get that coffee from ? Is there more?"
