background : the kwons aren't exactly your typical family. aside from the fact they live in a mansion, drives dozen of expensive cars and have servants helping them out, they can not be called a family. at least valerie wouldn't call them one. she rarely even sees her father, but she wouldn't blame him as he was married to a crazy woman that was her mother.
you see, valerie was a result of a one night stand - her father, kwon songho, was an uncontrollable young heir back in his early 20s. out if all the girls he could have had with, he had to choose hwang heeyeon, an alcoholic, poor witch as her grandmother would describe her. it was all an accident, but they had no choice to keep the baby and to keep the family's name clean, they also had to get married, with the kwons paying heeyeon money just so she could stay with songho until the baby turns at least 20 years old.
the couple was sent to san francisco to start their new lives. it was also where valerie was born. at first you'd think that they were lucky, they were in san francisco after all. but just imagine living a house together with a person you don't really love. unfortunately, baby valerie grew up unsurprisingly unhappy. sure she was given all these expensive clothes and had all the latest branded clothes, but she had grown very distant towards her own parents despite her young age after seeing them fight all the time.
at age 7, the kwons returned to seoul after the death of valerie's grandfather. because of his role as the ceo of the family's company, songho became busy and saw his daughter less. whenever he does see her, he'd ask her how her day was, but he doesn't seem to listen to whatever she says. he'd also give her cash and a pat on the back for being a good girl, thinking that its what children needed as it was what he received when he was younger. still, valerie enjoyed his company much more than her mother's. heeyeon went back to her alcoholic ways when they were back in seoul as she had more freedom and would often let her frustrations out to her daughter. whatever valerie does, she'd always get scolded at and received a lot of spanking from her mother. it was her grandmother who valerie was closest to in her family. the eldest kwon never liked her daughter-in-law, but she grew to love her granddaughter. she would always visit her after school, everyday if he could. all the positive attitude that she has, it all came from her 'mama' as she would call her.
