"aigoo, our little genius!" the voice over the phone calls out. inkyung bites her lip at this, hoping no one else around her can hear what her grandmother just called her. she looks around for a little bit and slightly covers as she whispers into the phone. "yes, grandma. how are you doing?" she says.

"i'm doing wonderful, of course! what about our little genius? are you doing well in school?" her grandma pauses for a second before letting out a laugh. inkyung awkwardly chuckles in response, not saying anything back. "oho, who am i kidding! of course you're doing well, you're our favorite little genius!" her grandma continues, and inkyung lets out a small 'aha, yes.'

when she was little, inkyung was pretty well known to the people in her neighborhood to be this unbelievably smart little girl. she memorized the multiplication table before anyone else her age did, and she learned things faster than even people older than her by two, three years. because of this, she earned the nickname genius, which is used by almost everyone who knew her in yeosu. even when she's not around, they like to talk about her and refer to her as the genius. she feels really bothered by this nickname, and doesn't want anyone who knows her in seoul to hear about it, but at the same time can't tell the people back in yeosu to stop calling her this either because she feels bad.

inkyung blows on the candles on top of the cake in front of her, chuckling lightly at her friends clapping loudly. "happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, our beloved sobong inkyung, happy birthday to you!!" they sing at the top of their lungs, bursting out laughing afterwards. inkyung feels a genuine smile forming on her lips, and she mouths a thank you at her friends.
 
"our very own four years old child!" one of them says, and inkyung squints, not quite understanding what they mean. "isn't this, like, your fourth birthday?" they tell her, and she lets out a laugh after realizing what they meant. "right, i'm four years old."
 
mostly used to because her birthday only comes once in every four years, coined by her friends. also used when her friends baby her, comes in a set with the cheek squishing and hair ruffling. she secretly loves this nickname the most because she finds it really cute, and she loves the affection that comes with it.

despite living in seoul for almost half her life already, it's still hard for inkyung to speak in a perfect seoul accent. she still mixes in some jeollado dialect at times, and her intonation makes it very obvious that she's from yeosu. she's trying her best to fix her way of talking, but it's really hard for her because she's really used to speaking in jeollado dialect. however, she's considered pretty good at written korean / the things you would study at school, and always get good grades in the korean language class. (she really, really likes memorizing and learning proverbs!)

because she started learning english pretty early (and at the age when she was a really really fast learner), inkyung's pretty fluent in english. she enjoys reading english poetry, and her english teacher used to make her write essays sometimes, so she's pretty good with difficult words. her pronounciation is also quite clear, and because of this, people (re: dongmyeong) like to about how her english pronounciation is better than her korean pronounciation.

as her family considered inkyung a 'genius', they made her learn a lot of languages at a young age. it was pretty hard for her, and she's forgotten a lot of them, but she knows these languages to some extent. 
chinese knows quite a good amount of vocabulary. stutters when she talks, very unsure of her grammar. can understand when listening to other people only when they don't talk too fast. always needs extra time to think after listening.    60%
japanese often confuses different words. has pretty fine knowledge of the grammar, but can barely use it to talk because of her lack of vocabularies. learned mostly by watching japanese movies and paying lots of attention to subtitles and listening to the japanese words, but gets things mixed up.    30%

sobong inkyung spends most of her day sitting at the corner of the classroom, watching as her classmates interact with each other, laughing to their heart's extent. inkyung's never the type to approach people first, and she's definitely nowhere near good when it comes to socializing. she's almost always invisible—she tries to be invisible. if it isn't for her unusual name, most people wouldn't know who she is. she buries herself in her books, and doesn't talk to anyone unless they approach her first. she walks with her head down, staring at her feet, her hair covering most of her face. when she sees people she's not close to, she bows slightly and her lips form a small, shy smile. she's well-mannered, she keeps a lot of things to herself, mostly because she doesn't want to be a burden to other people. she's insecure and takes things to heart, sometimes even getting hurt at the smallest comments, but never showing it to anyone except her very closest friends. she pays lots of attention to her surroundings, noticing the smallest details of everything without even meaning to. call her creepy, but that's just her nature. she cares a lot about the people around her, but isn't exactly good at expressing it. she's genuinely very thankful for her friends' existence, because they make her feel loved, and that's exactly what a girl like inkyung needs.

before class 2-f happened, inkyung had class 1-c. most of the people in her previous class were really nice people who approached her first, took care of her, and gave her the affection she needed. with her friends in class 1-c, inkyung was a lot less tense. she could joke around more easily, she had people to lean on to, she was a lot more open. she loved her friends in 1-c so much, that being in a different class with them affected her lots. she still talks to them, but being in the f class makes her feel like she's slowly turning into a burden to them, that she should probably stop bothering them. even when she feels really down, she doesn't have the heart to tell them about it because she's afraid that she'd just make them sad, that she'd just make them worry about her when it's not really worth their time. she starts slowly drifting away, and because her friends are busy as well, there's really not much time they can spend together anymore. she misses them sometimes—all the time—but she just keeps it in, refusing to tell them about how she's feeling.

BACKGROUND
'00 sobong inkyung is born in the town of yeosu, jeolla-do, south korea. mommy brings her home to a small, yet friendly neighborhood where she spends the next few years of her life. her neighbors come to see her—they pinch her cheeks, call her cute, and hope for her to grow up into a kind, successful person.
'04 sobong inkyung barely turns four, and she surprises mommy as she reads the writing on daddy's store front. later on, mommy finds out that she learned how to read from a close unnie who just entered elementary school. mommy brags to the neighbors about genius child inkyung, and they all praise her to no end. daddy makes sure inkyung gets new books to read every month, most of them educational books for children.
'06 sobong inkyung enters elementary school, already knowing how to do simple calculations and read newspapers. her teachers praise her all the time for her pace in learning, telling mommy and daddy that she has lots of potential. the next door aunt who just graduated from university tells them that a talent like hers shouldn't just be wasted in yeosu, and suggests that they consider sending her to seoul to study in a better environment, with a better education system.
'09 sobong inkyung moves in with her aunt in seoul, transferring into a famous elementary school there. mommy and daddy tells her to study hard, so she can be successful and make them proud. she promises to do her best and always stay in the top ten ranks, no matter what happens. she believes she'll do good, because she's genius child inkyung anyway.
'12 sobong inkyung enters middle school, and things stop going the way she wants them to be. everyone starts catching up to her, and she's no longer exceptionally smart. she feels a lot of burden because of this, and starts sacrificing a lot more of her time to study. she stays up all night to make sure she masters all the materials, she goes to hagwons in her free time to learn more things.
'15 sobong inkyung gets accepted into krs academy, and starts living in the dorm. she becomes even more immersed in her studies, barely making time for anything else. she gets to know her friends from class 1-c, and they help her loosen up a bit, but she's still the same old studious inkyung.

tl;dr / a girl who was once smarter than everyone else, but grows up to be just normal as everyone else catches up to her.

school life
most people only know inkyung as 'that girl with the weird name' or 'dongmyeong's friend', not more nor less. she walks on the corridors alone most of the time, her head always down, so it's quite hard to actually notice her. teachers remember her, as she's always very diligent and listens well during lessons. she has the neatest notes, and eventhough she's not the school's number one, she's still considerably smart. her friends consider her their most fragile little gem, who's got a lovely personality once you get to know her. they know she needs their support and affection, and they try their best to give her just that, to protect her from everything that could possibly hurt her.
 
WHAT'S YOUR GRADE AVERAGE AND CLASS RANK?
inkyung tugs on her sleeves, nervously looking around as she carefully opens to answer. "it's .. . ninety two. my scores always go up and down between eighty nine at least to ninety five at most, but i'm working on making it higher than that," she states with a small voice, "as for my rank .. . it's somewhere in the thirties. thirty three, if i'm not mistaken?"
 
MOST FAVORITE SUBJECT? LEAST?
"that would be science," she says without hesitating. a small smile forms on her lips, and she chuckles. "science has always been my favorite—it's a lot of fun. and least .. . my least favorite is probably mathematics. it's not that i hate it, but it requires a lot more thinking and i feel the most exhausted after studying math," she nods.
 
ANY FUTURE PLANS FOR YOURSELF?
she rubs the back of her neck, unsure whether to say something or not, but then lets out a sigh as she decides to not be shy about it. "i want to be a vet in the future, so i'll definitely be going in that direction in college, too. though i'm not sure which college i'll go to, hopefully i can go to somewhere nice," she admits.
 
HOW DID YOU END UP IN CLASS F?
inkyung shifts on her seat at the question, biting her lip. the story of how she got into class f is one she doesn't want to remember, let alone talk about, but she wants to try her best to get over it. "i wasn't late or anything like that," she starts, "you know how we have a seperate answer sheet, right? well, i first scribbled my answers on the question sheet before finally filling in the answer sheet." she pouts lightly as the image of how she messed up that day pops up on her mind. "when i filled the answer sheet, i didn't realize that i wrote the answer to number two twice, on both number two and three. my answers all shifted to the next number after that .. . i mean, i wrote the answer to number three on number four, the answer to number four on number five, and so on. it's a stupid mistake, and i was dumb for not double-checking. i miscalculated on some of the open-ended mathematics questions, too, and eventhough i did well with the science open-ended questions, they weren't enough to save my grade. ah," she lets out a bitter laugh.
 
ARE YOU PART OF ANY EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES? SPORTS?
"not many people know this, but i'm part of the english debate club," she smiles, lowkey proud of herself as she mentions the club. "i've only had the chance to join a debate competition once, because i'm still a new member, but yeah. i don't do sports, though. it's not exactly .. . my kind of stuff," she states.

"yes i do," she nods in response to the question, "i have a roommate, and it's (tba. another applicant, maybe?)."

inkyung had a good amount of friends back in 1-c, and out of all of them, dongmyeong was her closest one. he would always listen to her worries, always making her feel like she's not out of place. inkyung feels like she can let go of her usual serious self for a bit when she's around him. they still hang out with each other sometimes, despite being in different classes now—though not as often as they used to. he would sometimes come to her class and talk to her, but that doesn't happen very often. inkyung can feel herself getting less close to him each day, and she doesn't like the it. she enjoys his presence a lot, and she lowkey wants to be clingy and tell him to be with her more, but she's afraid she'd be a burden to him, so she doesn't.

if there's someone inkyung is genuinely scared of, that person would be  bang yeri. even without being in the same class, yeri had always been an intimidating presence to her, and now that they're in the same class, it just gets worse. inkyung doesn't get why yeri doesn't like her, why there would always be snide remarks thrown at her when they're together in the same room. she thought being friends with yeri's friends would help, but it doesn't—at least not much. that is, until chian brings her to one of their hang-outs, and she ends up confessing about almost everything that's bothering her, how she's actually feeling, and even the people back in yeosu and the pressure they make her feel. she notices yeri slowly warming up to her after that, and even standing up for her sometimes. eventhough inkyung is still lowkey intimidated, she can't help but to be happy at this progress. she tells herself that eventually, she and yeri will become close enough to the point that she can confidently say that yeri's her friend.

prior to being classmates with him, inkyung's heard a lot about chian from her friends. she's definitely aware of his existence, but doesn't bother to start a conversation with him even after they get into the same class. it's mostly because chian seems to hang out with yeri a lot, and it makes him seem a tad bit less approachable. when he comes to her and offers her tissue after witnessing her cry that one day, she's more than embarrassed. she's not the type to cry much, let alone cry in front of other people, but that day is an exception. she's just so tired that she feels the need to let it out, and she can't do it in the dorm because her roommate would see. she silently hopes he never brings it up again, and is definitely surprised when he convinces her to skip school the very next day. she refuses at first, but he keeps on insisting that she's 'missing the fun', so she finally gives in. she feels guilty the whole day, and her head is filled with toughts of school and her teachers, but at the same time she enjoys it a lot. she's never been this happy in a while, and she's really thankful to chian for it. they start hanging around each other more after that, eventhough inkyung still prefers to stay away when he's with yeri. she starts feeling some kind of attachment to him, probably because after 1-c, no one's ever been so nice to her, and she feels like she finally has someone to rely on again. possible l/i?

seeing chanyong in class 2-f on the second day of school is a big surprise for inkyung. she's pretty sure there's no way he can be in class f, the class for the people with the lowest grades, so how he got into class 2-f is a big mystery to her. eventhough she never really talks to him, she feels like he's one of the most approachable people in the class, so she doesn't mind coming to him every once in a while when she needs help with her work. they start being around each other more when inkyung starts being friends with chian, but it takes quite a while for them to actually get closer. after a long period of being awkward around each other, they begin talking more, and soon enough, they become close friends. they text each other a lot, and inkyung finds herself telling him things she doesn't usually tell people, probably because he's so pure and harmless. she listens to his stories as well, and sometimes they would go and study together when there are exams or basically just whenever they feel like it, so they can help each other.

minwoo and inkyung definitely aren't close, and the only reason they actually spend time around each other is mutual friends. they don't talk much, and when they do, it's usually pretty awkward. she doesn't know much about him except for the fact that her 1-c friends used to find him handsome, and she doesn't think they have anything in common, so they barely have anything to talk about. sometimes she wants to try and start a conversation, but ends up not doing it because she just doesn't know what to say, and slightly gets intimidated because he's so quiet. she knows he's a nice guy, but she still gets surprised when he buys her lunch every once in a while and all.
