they've known each other for years, between the awkward stages of puberty to debut. it really narrows down to the sm rookies she starred in mickey mouse club with; the boys who are currently in nct dream and girls who are still training hard under the same company. following the years, fans often find themselves shipping helena with mark and jihyun – mainly for the language barrier that they lack and the motherly care the elder girl shares towards helena. as a group, they have performed together on several stages for sm rookie concerts and when they heard helena had approached the higher authorities of the company to send her to produce 101, they were shocked but proud (as are most sm staff) that helena found such courage to do so. even after moving into the dorms, helena can be found secretly texting her friends in the middle of the night in the restroom, a heartwarming sigh with the corner of her lips spread into a pleasant smile rarely seen on screen.

with her parents busying themselves with familly issues, helena finds comfort in an older trainee, lee jihyun. over the years, the older has treated and supported helena well – sneaking out together to get ice cream in the middle of late night practises and talking through the night. helena has ever said that if sm were to ever debut them, she wants jihyun to be their leader. no doubt the rest has the same idea in mind. if there was one thing holding helena back from auditioning for produce 101 would be jihyun: leaving her best friend alone seems like a horrid thing. however she remembers what jihyun had told her when she pleaded for her to audition along side her: 'remember, you're not surviving the show yourself. you're doing it for us, for me and for yourself.' jihyun prmoises to attend all of her performances if the management allows her to do so. leaving the sm rookies dorm is the first time the girls and boys have ever seen helena cry.

helena was introduced as a part of sm rookies under the same name in december 2013. she starred in the 2015 revival of the mickey mouse club on disney channel korea with fellow smrookies (listed by age: jihyun, mark, heasu, jeno, haechan, hyerin, chaehyun, jaemin, /helena/, jisung) as the main cast. helena had performed on the show ever since the show ended in the same year, she hasn't had a chance to perform since and misses it. she can't do a cute concept to save herself one of the last trainees to audition for produce 101 season 3 as sm entertainment had no plans to send trainees until helena suggested and volunteered herself. when it is announced that helena is making her television comeback on produce 101 season 3 as a trainee representing sm entertainment, it surprises viewers as sm has not released any supporting publicity for their trainee. the only support helena receives are from fellow lablemates' instagram accounts (namely leetuek and taeyeon) and words from fans that went to nct 127's fansign in seoul (where it's written on a post-it note from taeyong, haechan and mark). viewers stay stumped at sm's decision to stay silent about helena. knetizens and international viewers keep making memes about helena escaping sm's dungeon through requesting to be on the show and she just laughs quietly in the dorm because That Was Exactly Her Plan. her debut on produce 101 will force sm to debut her, or even the rest of the sm rookie girls – when she tells her groupmates, they call her a genius. later on in the show, helena decides to have her hair cut to have see-through bangs, similar to red velvet's wendy. after that episode airs, her ranks climb upwards. in the first ranking, helena is actually ranked lower than expected: #39. in subsequent ranks, she stays in uppwe ranks. helena is never extra except on stage (like twice'a momo signal Extra). someone calls her 'provocative maknae' once and the name just sticks – same goes to the many nicknames she gains on the show.
