cultural appropriation

okay complaint but i really hate it when people try to look or be another culture? even when they joke? like where's the cultural appropriation? you can joke, yeah, i can tolerate, but depends how you're making it as a joke, but srsly stfu bc i feel offended. you can be genuinely interested in a culture and try their traditions and , but i'm not having that where you try to be korean appearance-wise or even language-wise when you can't even learn it properly. i know kboos and weebs are the worst, but just among general people, there's this thing called cultural appropriation among ALL cultures?? people are so immature

and!! for fanfics especially,, you know how most fanfics on aff are based on kpop groups. i just like to point out that some people don't do their research or don't use the correct terms or plainly show a wrong portrayal of korean culture...and it's actually frustrating. like where's the logic.

just a note for people out there.

sincerely,

a korean

(well, since i'm more adapted to english, i read fics on aff and i really like them,, but when i see an appealing fic summary then read that inaccurate fic, i ragequit on fanfics for the rest of the day lmao)

I recognize cultural appropriate as a major problem in the world as a whole because here people are trying to represent something without understanding it, and doing it for the fun of it. But besides that, I feel like it's a problem for biracial people who try to embrace their culture but are misinterpreted for doing so, this also may apply to people who are trying to learn about another culture but are misrepresenting it accidentally.

I'm mixed Korean and Puerto Rican. I look more Hispanic than I do Korean, heck I look more white than I do my actual races, so when I somehow try to represent my cultures or learn more about my cultures on my own because my parents never heavily put it upon me growing up in American n' stuff, people constantly give me crap about it. On heritage day last year, I wore a shirt with the Puerto Rican flag on it and brought in a mini Korean flag. Immediately people told me, "just cause you listen to Kpop, doesn't mean you're Korean. Just because you're taking Spanish class doesn't mean you're Spanish. That's cultural appropriation blah blah blah." And I'm just like ._. HOW CAN I APPROPRIATE MY OWN CULTURE???

I understand my culture never played a MAJOR role in my life as I'm mostly exposed to American culture, but it's the tiniest bits that make it important enough to me to learn about it and express it. I live with my grandma from my moms side, so every night I eat Spanish food. We celebrate Three Kings Day, Spanish is regularly spoken in my house amongst my grandparents and relatives to the point where everyone has some Spanish nickname, and we've all visited Puerto Rico to be with family at least once. As for my Korean side, my grandma from my dads side used to babysit me, feeding me kimchi and kimbap and seaweed and all kinds of dishes I don't even remember trying when I was younger. We would always watch Korean news channels and dramas and she too would speak to me in her broken English with bits of Korean spilling out every now and then. We celebrated the Lunar Year and White Day, and she always considered me a year older than I actually am. When I was a baby, I was dressed in hanboks for New Years too. But now that she's passed and my dad doesn't identify with that culture, it's not enforced in my life. So it's up to me to embrace the Spanish heritage I live with, and continue learning about the Korean heritage that stopped being taught to me. But here I am, being told by others that I'm appropriating those cultures because they see it all too much and use the term all too loosely to understand what it actually means.

cultural appropriation in general needs to be avoided. unfortunately, not everyone's aware of it when it takes place or when they take part in it, so it's hard to combat.
