Azumi is first and foremost a hero. At least, that's what she wants to be known as. She's very much somebody who likes to save the day, and will happily dive into the most insane and dangerous situations if someone needs her help. Or if they'll make her look cool, either works. Azumi cares a whole lot about external image and so tends towards an "ends justify the means" approach to life. Everything she does is with the intent to be a hero, therefore everything she does is the correct thing to do. Everyone will surely see that soon enough when she saves them all!
BACKGROUND —
Azumi was born the oldest of two daughters on Kyoshi Island. Her mother was a Kyoshi warrior and her father was a desendant of the Water Tribe, hence why Suki has blue eyes instead of the normal green associated with their Kingdom. Growing up, Azumi adopted the caution towards outsiders commonly found on Kyoshi Island after the war started and also learned how to hunt and gather starting from the age of five so as to be useful in the community. She enjoyed her life, and loved her family, but that happiness didn't last.
Not long after Azumi's seventh birthday, her mother's group of warriors decided to assist in the Earth Kingdom's resistance. Azumi was actually quite proud of her mother and truly believed that the Warriors would bring an end to the war. Instead, after a year of silence, it was discovered that the whole group had been killed, and Azumi and Suki found themselves orphans (their father had died of illness shortly after their mother had left). While Azumi had never liked the Fire Nation, that was the day it became personal.
Azumi began training with one of the other groups of Warriors on the Island to herself become a Kyoshi Warrior. Never having been a very patient girl she struggled with even the basics of the Kyoshi style, never having the control to let her opponenets work against themselves and prefering to attack head-on. She did surprise people by staying with her training for two years, and she did pick up some basic moves with a fan in that time, learning to use it as a shield mostly but occasionally getting in some good footwork as well. But by the time she was ten years old she was tired of waiting. She wanted her revenge. And so she stole a fan, a katana, and a small wooden dingy, and set sail for the mainland.
Of course when she actually arrived she realized she had absolutely no idea what the heck she was going to do next. She spent nearly a week wandering through the woods, using her katana to hunt rather than fight (though only because she somehow lucked into never running into Fire Nation). Then, one fateful evening, she spotted a glowing in the distance and followed it to find a town in flames. Being Azumi she of course ran right in, whipping out her katana in excitement only to find that most of the soldiers had already left. So instead she did her best to help evacuate people, though more often she ended up getting caught underfoot and causing even more trouble.
Put out at the lack of enthusiasm her "heroics" had earned her she made to leave, but one young boy ran after her. He was about Suki's age and she immediately went into protective sister mode and asked if he was okay. Which was a stupid question really but what else are you going to say in that sort of situation? She learned the boy's name was Jet, and that his parents had died in the fire. She asked him if he wanted to join her on her quest to stop the Fire Nation, and with nothing else to do and revenge fresh in his mind he agreed. On the condition that they actually have a home base because maybe Azumi was fine walking forever but Jet's stamina was not that high when he was little.
And thus the begining of what would go on to become the Freedom Fighters was born. Azumi and Jet started small, harrassing passing Fire Nation convoys by dropping acorns on them from above and sabatoging their cargo while they were distracted, but they escalated with each successful raid. More kids joined as time passed, and Azumi tended to serve as Team Mom for the group. At least when she wasn't charing head first into fights and leaving everyone else to try and plan around her chaos. But their system worked and Azumi was happy as a Freedom Fighter. And she didn't feel at all bad when innocent non-Fire Nation started getting caught in the crossfire around her seventeenth birthday.
Not at all.
tl;dr - Born on Kyoshi, started training to be a warrior at 8, got bored by 10 and left the island without telling anyone to go fight the fire nation. You know, 10 year old stuff. Meets Jet shortly after and they start the Freedom Fighters. Has been there since. Is kind of getting uncomfortable with some of their tactics not but not enough to leave just yet.
SKILLS —
Ky-oh I don't actually know what I'm doing help: Though she trained for two years, Azumi probably never would have been a very good Kyoshi warrior. And so although she does have a fan, she rarely carries it with her, and when she does it's more likely to serve as something to smack people in the face with as a distraction or, you know, a fan. She does have some basic fancy footwork that she uses to her advantage, but honestly no one would look at this girl and think "Kyoshi Warrior".
There's a reason they call it the GREAT outdoors. You don't hear about the great indoors now do you?: Being from Kyoshi is already enough to know that Azumi is really skilled with outdoors-y things. Add to that the fact she's been living up a tree for the past eight years? Yeah, she's a nature master basically (according to her). She actually is quite adept at hunting and gathering, and is generally good with her hands when it comes to building shelters or weapons. She does have some basic tracking skills as well, though those aren't as refined as her basic survival ones.
His name is Stabby and he's very pleased to meet you: Azumi's main and favorite weapon is her katana. And yes, his name is Stabby, do you have a problem with that? Her method for using it is basically pure chaos. Run in and start stabbing any Fire Nation she spots. There's no rhyme, reason, or proper technique to her attacks, and this actually works in her favor surprisingly often. After all, if she has no idea what she's going to do next, it's not likely anyone else will be able to figure it out in time to counter it. Also, since she never got a proper sheathe for stabby she's very skilled at running around with an unsheathed katana strapped to her hip without cutting herself open. That wasn't always the case.
— Girls. Like, oh my god have you seen girls? They are amazing and gorgeous and kickass, girls are the absolute best. (AKA she is gay as and not afraid to be extremely obvious about it)
— Her favorite color is green. Specifically Kyoshi green. Yes it's cliché. No she doesn't care.
— Facepaint. Her favorite part of the Kyoshi uniform. Were she to ever get her hands on some she would no question immediately put it on as best she could
— Showing off her katana carrying skills. Hey, you try vine swinging with an unsehathed katana hanging by your side and see how you fare.
— Spiders. She adores spiders, it's almost creepy. She thinks they're just the coolest things since girls - they have eight legs you guys. Eight. Legs. Imagine what you could do with eight legs you could do everything. We only live as we do because the spiders have decided to not enslave all humanity. Spiders are the real heros man.
— Fishing. fishing man, fishing is the worst. Yes she can do it but she will complain about how bored she is the entire time.
— Swearing. A lot of people actually think she would be someone who tends to swear but she doesn't usually. If she ever did swear would be about to go down.
— Fire Nation. If you are from the Fire Nation you are evil and her worst enemy by default, I don't care how many puppies you've saved
— Cramped spaces. Having lived outdoors for most of her life she has claustrophobia. By extension, being inside for long periods of time makes her twitchy
— When other people get to do the saving. That's her job dude, what the heck?
— Her sash used to match her leggings but she dyed it the first chance she got it. It doesn't remotely match the rest of her wardrobe and she doesn't care, green is awesome. Though it's actually a shade too dark to match the Kyoshi outfit

Oh my gosh Azumi is embarrassingly proud of Suki and will fangirl if she ever sees her "little baby sister" kicking in a fight. Suki is a bit sore at Azumi for up and vanishing when she was only 7, and for subsequently not seeing why there's a problem with that, but they get along decently well for sisters.

She may have been one of the founding members of the Freedom Fighters, but Azumi has no problem letting Jet call the shots. After all, who has time for leadering when there are evil fire dudes to beat up? Leave that boring stuff to other people. Jet and Azumi get along well enough and he knows he can rely on her to play a tank role in raids (and that he can't rely on her to play any other role because she'll go charging in blade swinging either way).
Starting out as a reckless, narrow-minded Fire Nation hater, Azumi has nowhere but up to go. She would learn that not all Fire Nation residents are inherently evil, and that sometimes having a plan is a good idea. She'd also learn that there are wrong and right ways to be a hero (and if you need a sacrifice I volunteer Azumi as tribute, she could learn a lot from dying xD).
A certain business man, who gets along very well with all his staff, was preparing to drive to Chicago for a meeting. On the morning he was going to leave, he stopped by his office to pick up a few files from his secretary. On his way out, the security guard stopped him and begged him not to go on his trip. When the business man asked why the guard said he'd had a dream two nights before that the business man would be in a terrible car wreck on the way to Chicago. The business man assured the guard he would be fine and headed out. Around noon he called his secretary and told her to fire the security guard.
