Review of Rookie

As you all know, I am a fan of Red Velvet & their comeback is indeed awaited. To be frank, this is RV's first comeback with me being a fan. I've just joined back the K-pop fandom at the end of last year after two years leaving K-pop because of Jessica's departure from SNSD. But that's another story.

So.. I watched the music video of Rookie by Red Velvet yesterday one hour after its release (I wanted to watch right after its release but the internet was being a jerk) & I kinda had mixed feelings after I watched it for the first time because my first impression for it wasn't even an impression. So I watched it many times because I was like "I hv to watch this again" and at the fourth or fifth time I got the chorus stuck inside my head. The song is really catchy similar to Dumb Dumb (in a different way) & although it's obvious that the rap didn't obtrude Irene & Joy's voices, It wasn't really bad to me.

Whereas for the music video, It's quite creative (even though we all despise the candy stuff at first) because of the hidden storyline. Red Velvet's music videos are always impressive & different because of that. Their previous music video, Russian Roulette shows how the members eliminate one another by killing in different ways, many times because of love. Irene stated in a talkshow that Russian Roulette music video was about doing anything for the one you love (if I'm not mistaken) and of course, it doesn't need a genius to figure out that they kill one another in the mv despite their friendship because they were infatuated.

Yeri kills the most & dies the less while Irene dies the most & kills the less. In spite of that, Irene won the deadly game because she was the one whose heart contains the most love. She kills the less because she was concerned of their friendship & dies the most because she was kinda sacrificing herself. Love stays in her heart the most. I think it was correct to make Irene the actual winner who dies the most as she is the visual & as we all know, the face of the group should be the main character in music videos.

In Rookie, At first there's Joy who was holding something gas-like coloured in pink. Drug? Perfume? Who knows? Yeri and Irene smelled it & it incurred them being taken in a fantasy world (Alice in Wonderland?) Seulgi runs but was pulled into a closet, Wendy kinda tries to make things up but was also dragged into the world (She was spinning herself on a chair looking all drunk-like) Oh, and Irene's creepy (y) smile before she closes the closet then lights up a match was probably the indication of her being the actual evil as she was revealed as the puppeteer of the flowery guy whom I assume as the guider of the fantasy world (Mad Hatter? The rabbit?) For now, I'm just thinking that the conclusion of the Rookie mv is when you're in love, you'll succumb to a delirious state as if you're in a fantasy world & Irene being a puppeteer probably means that there will always someone who plays along -being hypocrite despite being the actual evil. (Wth?)

Lol I don't know. Someone will come up with a detailed explanation later somewhere. And to me the UFO stuff was kinda a little turn off. I still can't figure out the necessity of that scene & what does it mean. But yeah overall the song is good with its catchiness. It's a 'Red' concept. A concept that only Red Velvet has. So comparing them with other groups ain't gonna work out.

Also the people who are saying that their performance in the mv isn't good enough can shut up & wait for their comeback performance on Music Bank tomorrow. RV says that the choreo is the most difficult they hv ever tried (which means more powerful than Dumb Dumb?) & it was even coordinated by Exo's choreographer. So yeah let's just shut up for a while until their full performance.

That's all I've got to say. Sorry for wasting your time reading my meaningless thoughts.
