GEUN TAEHYUN / 근태현  his given korean name. it's rare for porter to be addressed as taehyun — unless you're his mother and he's about to get a real good scolding and beating, porter sort of forgets that this name of his exists.  he probably won't even turn his head to the sound of it. porter is so much cooler and eccentric, anyway.

PORTER ROBINSON  as an aspiring dj slash producer slash music maker slash whatever that floats in the dreamy nebula that hangs above his head, porter robinson, a rather popular north american electronic music producer has become one of porter's biggest inspirations to-date — from both his music style to the incredible scale of his success. coincidentally, they happen to have the same name and with this, porter believes it's something like a good luck charm. the self-proclaimed next big thing, the second coming of christ. i mean, second coming of porter. acquaintances often refer to porter as 'porter robinson' which makes his head grow larger than ever; smugness written all over his face. he hopes one day he can have success on the same level of porter robinson — the name porter geun (or a better alias, if he ever comes up with one for his individual projects) in flashy lights in a sold out arena. that's the dream.

PORTER-CHAN   there is no secret that porter is a rather huge fan of anime and manga/manhwa, often hearing stylistic influences within his music. because of such expressed interests, the band members had taken to calling porter, 'porter-chan' as a term of endearment. he finds it the tiniest bit embarrassing but also thinks it's rather adorable, and so, he doesn't detest it.

date of birth. june 1st, 1994 + 22
birthplace. sydney, australia
hometown. sydney, aus + daegu, s.k.
ethnicity. full korean
nationality. australian/korean (dual citizenship)
languages.

KOREAN / 한국어  85% fluent. the time porter has spent in korea has been a little less than the time he's lived down under in australia —  and as a result, his korean is the slightest bit off. he often feels that korean isn't his native tongue, struggling to find words to fully express himself or occasionally shoving in english words into his sentences to replace phrases and terms he can't think of. despite the hiccups, there is no traces of an accent and his articulation is almost always smooth.

ENGLISH / 영어   100% fluent. born in a town just on the outskirts of sydney, australia, porter spent a good portion of his adolescent life in the country. noticeably, porter doesn't sound like the brightest kid on the block, often stuttering in his sentences with plenty 'like, yeah, you know?' additions. however, it's only merely a representation of his thought processes, and not his ability to speak the language. when it comes to english, he's comfortable, articulation isn't a problem. also, let's not forget his to-die-for australian accent. yes.

ORIENTATION. aual, panromantic — porter had come to a realisation that ual attraction for him is almost (if not entirely) absent. he finds that aesthetic attraction is much present, often fawning over the perfect ratios of a facial structure, or admiring the tone in someones calf muscles. but it doesn't deter much from that. however, romance has something that has always been on his mind. he finds that many a time, he had developed crushes on people after admiring their talent. porter doesn't have a particular preference, in the past, he has been romantically involved with both genders within the binary.

# EXPERIENCE.

PIANO / 14 YEARS    piano lessons were started at roughly the age of seven, and he continued those for six years. he's trained in reading sheet music and knows how to play several classics. (or at least, should know.) an hour or two and he could easily play a piece if he had forgotten. although not extremely proficient in it, porter can play by ear, too.

KEYBOARD / 10 YEARS   keyboard was taken up at the age of 12, at the beginning of his high school life. it was only natural that he could play it with ease and so upon picking up the keyboard, a lot of his usage of it were purely experimental.

SYNTHESISERS / 6 YEARS   synthesisers were discovered by porter during his high school years, immediately immersed in the diversity. he had mostly tinkered with electronic synthesisers, being able to tamper with almost any instrument sound available. however, he had also bought and experiments continually with analogous synthesisers, intrigued by the rawness of the sound that he believes cannot be replicated.

GRIDS / 3 YEARS    lauchpads loaded with demos and sounds, he often plays around with these, making small tunes and such. he also has a drumpad, in which he taught himself basic drum patterns that he layers into his music.

RESUMÉ. porter's six years of formal classical training also resulted in the participation of competitions. he hadn't competed in many, as it wasn't really his thing, but he did win two awards, a second and third prize. after he gave up formal training, no more competitions were had.

attended music class in all of his years of high school in both korea and australia, however, only completed his major senior year assessments in music in australia. all instruments were experimented with at that point, but he stuck with piano and keyboards (and occasionally, synthesisers, although he tried to keep it as more of a side-project and hobby as opposed to bringing synths into his academic life). he acheived extremely high marks for his compositions during high school.

porter and a few friends he had in australia would often have jam sessions in the music room during lunch time, although that was nothing too serious. they played the talent show twice (winning it in 12th grade) and played for the graduation ceremony intermission.

he attended one year of music college, in which he made a handful of compositions (a few that he actually liked, and plenty he detested) and performed a few times.

for roughly four years now, porter has been creating music and uploading it onto the music streaming site, soundcloud. he often remixes other tracks people have released, or he will make his own. he has also collaborated with vocalists that he then layers into his music. additionally, he often creates demos and stems that he uploads to be free for download/use for others.

JW: what made you decide to join ngsy?
there's a sharp intake of breath that last for a few seconds as his eyes dart away into a corner as he sits in thought, 'is 'because i wanted to' a bad answer?' he chuckles, a deep laughter that echoes in its awkwardness.

'because honestly, why not? i don't really have a better answer.'

he makes direct eye contact with junwi, and it's as if he's waiting for more to be said, and so porter is tapping his fingers on his denim-clad thigh, a bit of a habit, as he tries to extend his reply to be atleast mildly satisfactory. 'i like music, i make music, you like music, you wanna make music with a bunch of people... it makes sense, doesn't it?' he ends it with a weak shrug of his shoulder, interlacing his fingers together on his lap as he softly bounces his feet on the floor.

jw: hm, what do you think of your skills? what makes you better than the rest? what can you offer ngsy?
with this, porter is a little taken aback. he sits further into the metal folding chair, as far back as it'll allow him as he's frozen in thought. his expression remains vacant, he's never really taken into account his skills, or what makes him unique. in the past, he's kind of just, went with the flow, and that had somehow proven his worth. to be verbal about it was a little something he wasn't used to.

he stutters in his words, not sure how to articulate himself, 'i... think i'm pretty good? i play the piano. keyboard — technically, i'm.. uh... not bad?'

he's not going well with selling himself here, and junwi is by far, not impressed. it's written all over his face, obviously not enthralled in the slighest and porter is struggling.

'but i love synths, they're so diverse, the possibilities, they're... they're endless. i'm constantly making new things. new sounds. always working, always thinking up new things—'

'i guess, uh, that's what i have to offer.'

jw: (sighs) as you know, we debuted three years ago. how has the journey been? what has happened so far? do you see it as a good or bad experience?
fondness. he's just so fond of it all. he didn't particularly expect it to kick off so nicely, nor did he think he'd meet such an incredible bunch of people, but he was sweetly surprised. the question triggers a 'bout of nostalgia, a tiny smile kinking at the corner of his lips as he thinks of all the late nights and early mornings spent in the studio. all the times he fell asleep at his desk, waking up with the indentation of buttons on his face, creating a ruckus of laughter whenever seen.

he never planned on joining a band to accomplish his goals, but it may have been one of the best decisions he's ever made — one of the best steps made toward the right direction.

all these thoughts run through his mind, and yet he can't exactly find how to word it.

'the journey has been... crazy. i've lived a pretty messy life but this was chaotic — in a good way.' the grin widens on his lips as he continues, 'so much has happened, i met people who i'd call family,' he spits a little laugh at the sentimental nature of his words, junwi rolling his eyes at him, 'i made so much music in different atmospheres and with a... uh.. different mindset. played in front of crowds. all these cool moments.'

'it was a good experience so far. wherever it takes us, i'll continue to follow.'

jw: alright, (frowns) well i didn't plan this question... but if today i gave you the choice to leave ngsy, would you take it?
'today?' he quirks a brow, before letting the question sink in a little further. it erupts a small laughter from him, and he shakes his head, lips pursed.

'no, not today. we're on such... a roll, bulldozing ahead, i like where we are.' he nods.

'but it's not to say that i wouldn't leave. if life takes me in a different direction then so be it,' he diverts his gaze away from the creative director before continuing, 'but, uh, as of now, i have no plans on leaving. i'm having the time of my life. i don't wanna put a stop to that just yet.' his words are ended with a smile, although he's a little startled that junwi would ask such a massive question.

jw: what do you wish for in the next year?
he cross one ankle over the other, his legs outstretched in front of him as he stares at the small scuff mark on the inner edge of his sneakers. a deep breath is taken in before he  speaks, 'more music. more production. more fun. more fans? maybe make a little money here and there.' his last little statement causes a snicker to come from the director in front of him that amuses porter, a huge grin coming across his face. it's not often that he sees junwi laugh — even if it were only for a split second.

'mostly, i just wanna have fun doing what i love, 'ya know?'

jw: interesting. last question, are you close to any of the members?
porter instantly thinks back to the first moments of meeting the band, his awkwardness peaking and his socialising skills that he's garnered over the years suddenly leaving him. it makes him laugh once more, thinking about how far he's come in terms of closeness and fondness.

he's aware that through his life, friends were hard to make and even harder to keep, but for once this group of ill-fitted musicians suddenly makes him want to never let go. 'i'm close to everyone. '

'well, i'd think so. they're a good bunch of people. what they'd say about me in closeness may be a different story.' he ends with more laughter and genuine smiles.

a muted charisma, twisted and diluted with a whimsical fascination that comfortably sets him apart from others. to draw in the attention of others is not something porter finds himself naturally able to do, nor is it something that he greatly desires but company, affection, intimacy is always appreciated and occasionally sought after.

worries do not cloud his simple mind, as devotion and a childlike airiness overtake this and he finds himself untroubled and patient with reaching his dream. inspiration is limitless — constant innovations flow through his thoughts; often times bringing his expressions to a halt. vacant glistening eyes staring into nothingness whilst his brain churns and grinds.

the life porter has lived thus far has been far from normal, a rather chaotic adolescence that involved travelling between two countries annually, always attempting to make friends and always having to settle down into foreign surroundings. it's as if his uprooted life has come to shape and mould him into his current self, in all of his breeziness and recklessness, in his obssessions and his biased nature.

friends made in one city were left part way through the year, briefly forgotten and dearly missed, for a different herd of acquaintances. half year gaps, six months — they don't seem like a lot but for a kid, it was an incredibly long time to be away. friends were never a constant, and so porter seeked comfort in different ways (music, animated tv, video games); they became a lifeblood, and with each substance, porter dug himself deeper into the worlds to find a sense of contentment and fondness. things like this, he could bring with himself to different countries.

friendships were intermittent. as introverted as porter may had wanted to be at given times, he pushes himself to amicable, as any companionship is better than none. however, this sense of discontinuity hatches a selfish nature — a want for things for himself when he couldn't keep a friend. or a desire for success in present day because he never felt accomplished as a child. loneliness has been an ever-present factor and although connections are hard to come by for porter; the genuine ties he creates are ones he keeps close to home. there's few and far between, but they're there. that's for sure.

as times go by, porter lets himself drift to new opportunities. he floats his way closer to his dreams, knowing that one day, if  he's lucky enough, he'll find what he's been looking for. if he's zealous and optimistic, it'll come.

timeline.
june first, 1994, porter taehyun geun is born in sydney, australia to  seo hyunyi and geun junki, their second and last son after his older brother, bailey taejin geun (born 1990, faceclaim shon minho). three years, much before porter could even remember much or process his surroundings, his parents marriage ended with divorce. the fallout was absurd, and it resulted in his mother packing her things and leaving australia for her home back in daegu of south korea.

up until the age of six, in the year 2000, porter lived in sydney with his father and older brother. however, after turning seven, things changed — it got complicated and things took a huge turn. his mother applied for both porter and bailey to have dual citizenships and to live between the two countries, travelling every six months or year. as porter had already lived in australia for the first six years of his life, porter was adamant on staying in australia for as long as he could before he had to fly to south korea to see his mother. the longest he had fought for were two years — when he first began high school in australia.

in daegu, porter went by taehyun (even though he detested it, it was useless). during his first official stay there, his mother enrolled him in piano lessons. she wanted him to feel like it was home and have some sort of pleasant memory in south korea. from there, a love for music sprouted. he took his love for piano back to australia and additionally enrolled in lessons there too. it was amongst one of the only things that he could enjoy regardless of surroundings.

despite good schools in both countries, porter always struggled, both academically and socially, it was all a terrible endeavor. something about being thrown across the world so often probably had something to do with his development — he grew up so incredibly awkward. he had few friends, but neither of which rivalled the attachment he had to his older brother. bailey had to go through the same thing as porter, but he grew up so well-spoken and accomplished that it sometimes makes porter wonder what went wrong in his genetic makeup.

it was up until the age of 18, that this tirrade continued. but upon his eighteenth birthday and officially becoming an 'adult', porter decided to stay put in australia, once and for all — a lot happened in the process of telling his mother this, which included stating her selfishness, stating his hatred for how he had to  travel so far just to see her, and how the entire process made him grow up so strange. however, he doesn't hold a grudge, it's done and over with, but it's obvious the damage it has done to his psyche and general ability to be your average individual.

growing up, porter was always the one who lacked. bailey made up for most of it, he was smart, talented, good-looking and kindhearted. because of the circumstances they were put through, bailey's growth was a miracle, whereas porter's dud was expected. despite such happenings, despite the fact that porter lives in the shadows of his older brother, he loves him unconditionally.

however, as porter stayed in australia, bailey moved to south korea. during this time, porter continued pursuing his music, it seemed to be the only thing he was actually good at, and so he milked it as much as possible. during high school, in australia, he and some friends would often have jam sessions in the music room of their school; not officially being a band but often learning covers to perform and school talent shows or ceremonies. as porter continued to play the piano, he also picked up the keyboard at the beginning of high school, often fascinated by the diversity it had in comparison to the grande.

half-way through his time in high-school, his friends in music class in australia introduced him to synthesisers. again, it felt like his entire life was changed. it was everything a piano was, everything a keyboard was — and so much more. his father had bought him his own (along with a grande piano in both countries and a keyboard, it's safe to say that porter was spoilt with instruments) and the experimentation only grew from there.

after high school, graduation, and the decision to stay in australia, porter attended a music college. he soon discovered grids, launchpads, drumpads and the like. along with those instruments and his synthesisers, porter would create music and post them on soundcloud. he was essentially a bedroom dj.

one year into music college and porter was just not having it. music history was a bore and the lack of freedom he had felt suffocating. after much comtemplation, porter decided it was time for another change. things were arranged within a week — he was packed and ready and left for south korea.

he began living in seoul with his older brother, worked part-time at a bakery and continued to make music. he had no friends down in seoul, and so, upon seeing an ad for ngsy, porter thought it would be the perfect chance to meet new people and hopefully find a group of individuals that shared the same interests.

it was worth a shot, nothing to lose.

TRIVIA.
ONE  the amount of instruments porter has accumulated over the years is kind of ridiculous. he owns three keyboards (yamaha psr-s670, roland bk-5 and a korg pa-600), four synthesisers (moog sub 37, novation mininova, roland gaia sh-01 and a korg volca sample), and two grids (a maschine mk2 launchpad and a roland spd-sx drumpad). he also has access to 2 grande pianos, one at home in daegu and one in his home in australia.

TWO  all the music that porter produces is highly stylistically inspired by japanese synthpop and other well known electronic artists like porter robinson. during his days avidly posting on soundcloud and attending music college in australia, porter had become acquainted with a group of dj's who produce similar music, sometimes remixing their songs or even collaborating with them. he became rather close to them and would often hang out with the ones that resided close by. now that he's in korea, he tries to keep in touch and occasionally will still remix tracks they post, but communication is lessening. (artists include: basenji, cosmo's midnight, waveracer and sable (these are indeed real artists, by the way.)

THREE   amongst things that porter cannot do, the worst one by far is sing. despite being to read music and understand keys and tones, he cannot for the life of him, produce sounds from his vocal chords that sound pleasant. he strays away from backing vocals and purely sticks to what he knows. if anyone catches him singing (in the shower, singing to himself to get a feel for melody), they'd most likely question his musical abilities.

FOUR   porter's living conditions aren't the best, but they're definitely far from adversity. he's currently attempting to live off of a rather poor, part-time job salary (he works at a bakery). however, his older brother is the main provider. as bailey is rather successful, he can provide for them both without much of an issue. porter promises that at one point, he'll become famous and return the favour, but at this moment, he's still gratefully living off of him.

FIVE   money management is one of porter's weaknesses. he can't help but buy miscellaneous knick knacks (usually in the form of instruments) and snacks with his spare cash, rarely ever saving. he also has a budding interest in fashion, in which he has time and time again spent large amounts of money on a single pair of shoes (curse you kanye). amongst his larger instruments, porter also has a collection of odd little instruments that he bought to experiment with (read: play around with and annoy everyone), these include thumb pianos, harmonicas, xylophones, kazoos and miscellaneous percussion instruments.

SIX   porter rarely finds himself stressed. when given deadlines for things he doesn't really care about (i.e. homework assignments during high school), he'll just drop it. forget about even attempting it — it's just not happening, he'd rather suffer the consequences. when it comes to music, porter hasn't particularly found himself in a rut or in a block, mostly because he doesn't set up expectations. he makes music to his hearts content, not to appease to anyone. upon joining ngsy though, it had become a bit different, and although porter is still not the type of person to become stressed, he has found to push himself a little harder and further to get a good outcome. he has learnt to cater toward others needs and not just his own (a little).

SEVEN  his major goal in life is to make music that not only he enjoys, but what everyone else enjoys. to live comfortably, not lavishly, just comfortably. provide for his brother. make a living through music. garner  a fanbase that truly enjoys his creations. porter does have goals, and he's devoted to music, but there is no rush. patience.

EIGHT   likes: weird musical instruments, japanese anime, japanese manga and korean manhwa, video games, savoury snacks (i.e. chips, streetfood, fried snacks), kanye west/yeezy fashion, sydney beaches, fancy launchpads, electronic music, sour candies, huge 'bouts of inspiration, beer.

NINE   dislikes: restrictions, deadlines, people who are outwardly rude, his own immense awkwardness, too much unwarranted affection (makes him more awkward), cigarette smoke, unproductiveness.

TEN   porters audition email was composed entirely of a link to his soundcloud page. it was composed something like 'hey what's up mr. ko, i make music and stuff and i couldn't really pick which songs to send you so here's a link to my soundcloud. pls take a listen :-) here's my contact info'. smiley face and all. when junwi speaks of this, people are usually incredibly taken aback by his lack of eloquence or formality. they're also taken aback by the fact that junwi even took him into consideration in the first place. he usually says that he thought it was a total joke but upon listening to things porter had made, he was actually seriously contemplated.

ELEVEN   porter's playlist: walk with me - cosmo's midnight / can't get enough - basenji / surf - sable / speak with a dofflin (sable remix) - basenji / streamers - waveracer / sad machines - porter robinson / the thrill (porter robinson remix) - nero

TWELVE   written aesthetics of porter geun: floating in an outdoor pool, drifting aimlessly. finishing off a artwork, last paint put in place, you step back and digest the image. riding a bike a full speed, pedalling with force until the muscles in your thighs begin to ache, the wind blowing in your hair, the breeze cooling on the skin. unplanned roadtrips, hopping into the car at 3 a.m. and stopping at the gas station, buying bags of snacks and drinks.

appearance. on stage, he's got a little bit of a dreamy, illusory presence. one that lights with his own aura, but also dims into the backdrop — not entirely shining, but still softly lit. but if there's anything that truly defines porter, it's definitely an awkward charm. black brown hair mangled in a mess atop his head or kept in wraps under a strap-back hat. a shaved undercut that he takes quite a lot of care in upkeeping, always at a perfect buzz. there's an absent look in his eyes, always staring off into the distance (blank walls, empty halls), heavy eyelids that flutter with a dozy lure with each and every yawn. his lips part into a ever-open gape, a little down-turned but not particularly sad, just adding to his overall vibe of daze. slight darkness falls under his eyes,  purple-blue hues present in bags emphasising the amount of time he spends in the studio, dedicated to his music. any time anyone would ask for a smile from porter, it comes off as extremely forced, a half-curved kink of the lips with a clenched jaw — it usually cues choruses of laughter. however, when carefree, his eyes curve into crescents and the smile that etches his lips look natural and if you'll have it, a little cute.

slightly tanned skin from the australian sun, porter finds himself a shade or two darker that the ghost pale of most south korean residents. he's tall, but not so much as to be impressive, and he's lanky, gangly arms and legs and a little bit of pudge at his stomach when he eats too much in one sitting. often times, porter believes he's far from attractive but fans (and acquaintances) often say otherwise, with his dark, vacuous eyes, endearing dullness, the small kink of his lips and the nose that sits surprisingly high — you could probably consider porter geun to be handsome. probably.

  BAILEY GEUN / OLDER BROTHER
provider, best friend and supporter

as disorderly childhoods go, having a sibling is like a saving grace. for porter, he had bailey, there to accompany him through rough lows and ecstatic highs.  in the year that bailey was in korea and porter was in australia, he missed him so much, as he was his confidante and his mood-maker, his friend and his brother. it is to no surprise that when porter moved to south korea, he was no going to stay with his mother, but with his brother, instead. for the first year, bailey was still starting out in the corporate world and had a decent job, but not particularly enough for them to live comfortably. however, after a year passed and a promotion was given, bailey was then able to provide for them both. despite so, porter kept his part-time job, just to take the burden off of his brother a little. feelings aren't always spoken, but they're always understood. down days are accompanied with silent drinks over the kitchen counter, empty bottles of soju lined up, one after the other. good news is immediately shared with a click of a button, a text message or phonecall. upon going through friendship fallouts and unstable companionships, porter knew that despite all that, he still had bailey to lean on. although in no particular rush, porter does hope to be able to provide for himself. bailey doesn't ever speak of struggles to his younger brother, or tries not to, always hoping for the best after knowing just how turbulent their childhood was. bailey will always be his foundation. additionally, bailey turns up to most, if not all of ngsy's gigs. without fail.

  KO JUNWI / CREATIVE DIRECTOR
'don't anger the beast.', admiration, love-hate

porter and junwi together can become a little unpleasant, they don't mesh incredibly well in terms of personality and porter often finds himself under the harsh words of the creative director. however, porter is silently self-immersed, where junwi's a little bit more forthright about his concerns. and so, whenever porter finds himself unpleased with how things are unfolding, he keeps to himself, as so not to anger junwi and get reprimanded for it. however, there's admiration there for junwi, that's for sure. porter admires and appreciates the efforts put into the band, he adores the creativity of the man and his dedication. despite that, when junwi places deadlines or asks porter to put aside a personal project for the sake of the band, he gets a little irritated. it's not entirely expressed, but it's there. if it's something he doesn't want to do, he simply won't do it, and for that, junwi gets on his ; questioning his motives and his devotion toward the band.

however, junwi can fully commend porter's talent, even if his team-work skills dwindle, he's sure that there's a sort of growth and development that can occur. they're truly fond of one another and respect each other's work, but they do heads, often, as porter can be a little too selfish and unco-operative. deadlines need to be met, junwi's words are laconic and often times laced with callous decorations and porter just can't quite tolerate that. his protests of not doing it at all often turn out for the worst, scoldings are presented and things are eventually completed against his own will. porter's unreliability within these things are often a point of irritation for junwi, but as times progress, things get better.

  HWANG ISANG / BAND MEMBER
awkward bros, lazy friend, studio buddy

porter and isang have a lot in common, many mannerisms that coincide and a similar presence (except for isang's towering height and porters comparatively less impressive height). when they're together, awkward silences are bound to present, regularly sitting together and basking in the others awkward presence. however, isang is a lot more friendly than porter, much more charming and easy to get along with. thankfully, as without that, porter would be at a loss with his subpar forced amiability. in most circumstances, they don't have a whole lot to talk about, but being in each others company, they have found, to be rather pleasant.

many a time will isang accompany porter to their studio, maybe to get junwi off his back about being lazy, who knows. porter sits in the chair, headphones on, completely immersed in the programs on the screen and the instruments in front of him whereas isang will lounge about on the couch, watching television or eating snacks. again, here, they enjoy a comfortable silence within one anothers presence.

open for love interest.
