Personality
if there's one thing that you need to know about yoo jaein, it's that she doesn't like to talk. ever since she was a child, jaein has always been adamant about being quiet. feelings were always fairly strange to her, to try to process them in words and express them to people was like asking jaein to sprout wings and fly. jaein's never really minded being alone, in fact, she enjoys being by herself or in a very small company; loud parties or cramped dressing-rooms have never been her favorite. she's always had a hard time being expressive, which in turn has shaped her into a fairly cold person. jaein has the aura of a city girl- she seems like she doesn't really care for anyone or anything, and for the most part, that's very true. when jaein is very passionate about something, she never lets go of it. when she first learned to cook, she would stay up late in the night perfecting her dishes and trying to improve. because she puts so much effort into one thing at a time, jaein is very conservative with her interests and relationships.
she tends to be pretty objective as she doesn't have much of a bias towards anything. jaein looks on the logical side of things, she isn't a person to get too swayed by her feelings- in fact, she doesn't typically get swayed by anyone's feelings. there are many jokes within knights&roses, and their fandom, about jaein being a robot. it's really hard to deny when she thinks in such a structured, well-routined manner. jaein appreciates structure more than anything, doing something impulsive is very rare for her and something she doesn't do often- she gives a lot of thought into the things that she does.
first impressions with jaein don't tend to go very well. her cold aura, the usual glare in her eyes; she's a bit hard to approach. it doesn't help that jaein is notorious for having a short-temper. she's very dogmatic to say the least, it doesn't take much to upset her- just being late for practice, talking to her while she's trying to finish something, or even a simple-hearted prank. jaein's personal talents include raising her voice and threatening to beat up the court jester on a daily basis. jaein's not necessarily a mean person at heart, she doesn't go out looking for people to be rude to or to yell at, but if she's provoked she won't hold back. she's fairly thankful that the other girls of white rose have adapted to her short fuse, though she probably won't ever tell them so.
jaein is very dedicated in what she decides to put her heart into. the few things that she does have a passion in and the people that she does find herself gravitating towards, she falls deep into them. singing being the greatest example. she's a diligent person, and doesn't let any task go without trying her best on it. she doesn't really take anything lightly, which leads her to be competitive and a bit dense. she has a hard time distinguishing when someone's joking around with her or not.
overall, jaein is still trying to find herself. she doesn't really understand many of her emotions- let alone anyone else's emotions. she has good intentions, even if she can seem like a cold, unforgiving person most of the time.
she may be twenty-two, but she's still growing. bit by bit, jaein is heading down her path- and she's pretty content with the direction she's heading.
BACKGROUND
a cold, saturday morning with snow flurries flying in the air- that's when yoo jaein was born. she was born in the hadong district of gyeongsangnam, a small town where for every actual building there was in town, there was at least an acre of farmland. things were very quiet, and very peaceful. yoo taeho and park sora, however, were not quiet and peaceful. jaein's parents were very loud and energetic- that's why it was so odd that jaein didn't follow suit. in contrast, jaein was very quiet, even as a child. instead of running around, she would often just doodle or watch her mother cook in the kitchen of their once-small restaurant. in all honesty, her parents were almost a bit worried about jaein's behavior. they constantly tried to push her to become more social, which wasn't a bad thing- but it annoyed jaein to no end, leading her to have the short temper that she's known for today.
school was the same way. jaein did had a small handful of friends- but she was fairly distant with them to say the least. it never really bothered her. she appreciated solitude and would rather help her parents with cooking and running their seafood joint than run around and get in trouble. the yoo's restaurant was growing rapidly during jaein's high school years- sora's amazing food and the family atmosphere the place provided made it especially popular in hadong. jaein began to turn into even more of a shut-in, and when her seventeenth birthday rolled around with no desire for a celebration, her parents started to get a bit worried. jaein never felt like she ever fit in anywhere, even her own home didn't have much meaning to her, other than a place where she slept and ate. jaein would find herself walking the same path everyday, feeling distant and often alone. this, of course, was very worrying to her parents.
sora told jaein that she needed to make friends, to go out and involve herself in something other than the restaurant- it took months and months of pushing and threatening, but jaein finally gave in. the only club at jaein's school that was actively accepting members was the school's choir. and, without much of a choice, jaein joined it.
surprisingly, she flourished in it- singing was something that jaein fell very comfortably in to. she grew a strong passion for singing, and though she was distant with the other members, jaein still held a special place in their heats. the choir club felt like jaein found something that she belonged in, singing brought a new dimension into jaein's world and she had never felt so happy. no one was surprised when she stepped up as the club's leader during her senior year, and despite her scary demeanor and harsh way of running things, the club did extremely well. so well, in fact, that they were invited to sing at hadong's cultural festival during the fall of 2013.
which just so happened to be the same place that jaein would meet jang jaehyuk.
after jaein and her choir had finished their set, jaehyuk set after her immediately. telling her simply that he was the ceo of an entertainment company in seoul, and that she had won his heart over with her voice- he wanted her to move to seoul and start training under new star. jaein didn't realize that she had said she was interested until she was calling her mother with jaehyuk's business card in her hand.
and so, the day after her high school graduation, jaein found herself on the first bus ride to seoul at six in the morning, her mother and father waving her goodbye with tears in their eyes. the whole situation felt too fast for jaein, but in an odd way, she enjoyed it. it was the first time that she had ever done something impulsive in her life, it felt strange, but it was a good feeling of strangeness. singing made her happy and on the bus ride to seoul, jaein had decided that she was going towards the right path.
the first step she took in new star's building felt strangely familiar.
it felt like home.

• jaein doesn't drink very often, despite being of the age where she should like to party. she tends to get drunk very easily- it only takes her about one or two beers to get pretty tipsy. she's usually very sleepy and a hell lot more talkative when she is drunk. out of everything, she likes the 'joeunday' brand soju the best.
• jaein is horrible at apologizing or admitting that she's wrong. if she ever feels guilty, she won't say she's sorry outright- instead, she'll try to make her faults up to someone by making or buying their favorite foods or sweets.
• jaein is very good at watching horror movies, going into haunted houses, hearing ghost stories, and the like. she doesn't really understand how other people can find things like that scary, as she just doesn't find any horror content to be realistic at all. along with this, jaein isn't superstitious, despite her parents being very much so.
• the reason jaein is afraid of water is an incident she had while on a fishing trip with her father when she was in the first grade. she and her father often went fishing on the town's dock together. that was, until one day, jaein fell off the side of the dock into the ocean below. not knowing how to swim, a seven year old jaein quickly started to panic. her father pulled her back up as soon as possible, but, jaein was completely shocked. she still hasn't set foot in the ocean since then.
• out of all the members, jaein is closest to the crown princess by a large margin. though they weren't very close when jaein first started training, they had a very slow progression, until one day jaein realized the crown princess was her closest friend. she often has questions about life in seoul and the other member's actions she'll always quietly go to the crown princess for answers.

trainee life :
practicing wasn't all riches, and despite having a sense of comfort- days were often hard and wearing. jaein's short temper and her tendency for mistakes in her first years weren't a good combination. she felt like giving up often, but gifts that her parents would send up from hadong made her feel a bit more stable. she wasn't happy with where things seemed to be headed. one night on the phone with her parents, she confessed that she wanted to stop her training and move back home. to her surprise, her mother simply brushed her off. "don't give up so easily," she had said, "my precious jaein, when have you ever given anything up in your life? stop getting in your own head and just follow your dream."
and from that one statement, something in jaein clicked.
that was the reason she had come to seoul, that she was so impulsive about the whole situation.
for the first time in her life, she had a real dream.
after that night, she began to rapidly improve. her vocal colors began to shine, and her techniques were getting stronger by the day. she began to settle in her place, not only as the shadow of new star entertainment that would snap if you got too close, but as new star's trainee with a voice of gold.
