Have you read Claudia Gray's Firebird series (A thousand pieces of you & Ten thousand skies above you)?

I am in the beginning of book 2, and I somewhat enjoyed book 1 more than I would admit. I am absolutely hooked to the story/plot because it reminds me of CLAMP's Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, which I am mad for! Only, I am finding it a bit difficult to care for the main character? I feel like she's 'flat' and reactive; although i may still be feeling the residues of the other lead protagonists i recently finished reading (The Rook and The Raven Boys, and the characters resonated with me). What do you think of the trio in the Firebird series? And of the villain?

One part of me wonders if this is actually Gray's style of writing? The only other book i have read is Lost Stars, and I was somewhat disappointed with it in the end too.
