— born in L.a., she grew up an only child to an afro-dominican mother and a korean father. so it was safe to say that a lot of cultures surrounded her during her youth. she grew up with a close relationship with her mother who is very much a free spirited individual while her father has always been a huge goofball who enjoys nothing more than making people laugh. though it was almost peaceful in the baek home, there was a constant struggle for money. stevie grew up very poor, her father worked two jobs, a butcher at a korean meat market and a car mechanic at a local garage while her mother was a full time maid who serviced the rich and the richer. there was a time in her life where she called the back seat of an old junk car her home. times were tough for the oddball family but even with the lack of income, stevie's parents never let their daughter go without. her mother and father fought hard to make ends meet so that stevie could enjoy nice things every once in a while. growing up in the heart of koreatown, stevie had grown up surrounded by korean hiphop and korean influences.
as she grew up, she started taking more interest in hiphop and rnb instead of her choir group that she had been a part of since she was very young. with more time being spent out on the streets with her friends, wanting nothing more than to surround herself with the underground music, there was a time were fights would break out between her mother and herself for never being home. the angst years that almost every teenager goes through but stevie's father was the buffer between the baek women. he was and has always been the peace keeper of the family. stevie first dipped her toes into actually creating hiphop at the age of seventeen, when angie introduced her to a friend of a friend, jonathan park. the rest was history, the two hit it off almost immediately and jon is a very large part of her life that has shaped her into what she is today. he helped her grow musically, though he'll tell you that she always had it - the natural talent that is needed for staying afloat in the hiphop world.
but it wasn't all easy times for stevie as she got more accustomed to her new environment. she received a lot of hate back in the day about her own style of hiphop due to the fact that she never really rapped and her flow wasn't as strictly hiphop as it 'should have been'. it really took its toll on the fresh young artist and she nearly gave it all up together when her parents voiced their concerns on how this path she was taking was not a stable one. all this weight fell onto her shoulders and sent her into a mild depression. for several months, she kept to herself, angie and min, her two best friends could do nothing to help and grew worried about her but it was jon that actually helped and pulled her out of her funk. slowly, bit by bit, jon chipped away the anxiety and the depleted passion to make her see that what she really had. "man, those people that say negative ." he helped her realize that not everybody will like what she does and that her style of music is just as badass as anyone else. a few months later, when stevie was eighteen, the pair began dating. the was nearly six years and many of their friends were almost hesitant but soon got accustomed to the couple as they realized that stevie may have been good for the wild jon. even in the angst years, stevie had never been a wild child and so her chill and homebody ways was something that jon loved about her while jon was one of the few people that could pull stevie out of her melancholy tendencies and showed her the affection and tenderness that he hadn't shown very many women at that time. their friends were shocked with how innocent their relationship was. ask anyone that knows stevie, jon was one hundred percent her first love.
when stevie was nineteen, her family packed up and moved to seoul, south korea due to money issuses and being unable to afford living in l.a. any longer. they moved in with her fathers mother and were able to conserve their money a little better. the distance on her relationship with her best friends was still as solid but her relationship with jon became strained. as his popularity began to rise even more, he would visit a few times but eventually the two split and it affected stevie in a hard way. she turned to music for solace and for a long time, it worked. stevie worked her off during the day during her crappy part time job and at night she would perform anywhere that would hire her. years went by, joN AND STEVIE COULDN'T STAY AWAY FROM EACH OTHER FOR VERY LONG AND AFTER SOME HEATED VISITS, THE TWO MISSED ONE ANOTHER TOO MUCH BUT NO LONGER FELT ROMANTIC FEELINGS FOR ONE ANOTHER JUST DEEP LOVE AS FRIENDS. STEVIE EVENTUALLY STARTED MAKING A NAME FOR HERSELF ON THE INTERNET ON HER SOUNDCLOUD AND IN THE HIPHOP WORLD WHERE SHE PERFORMED IN CLUBS AND ON THE STREETS.
