Standing below the line of sight for most people, Sooyeon is easy to look over, especially at first. However, upon closer inspection, Sooyeon is a quiet sort of beauty that shys from the limelight. Her eyes are direct and without pretense, voice calming with a melodic lilt. Her rare smiles light up a room.

She dresses in simple, non-eye-catching colors and though she's fine with dresses or skirts, she has a definite preference for pants. She keeps her hair down until it's working time, in which case she ties it up. She has one pair of ear piercings and only wears silver though most pirates tend to prefer gold.

personality »

"Let's take this one day at a time."

Always with her head on straight, Sooyeon can be counted on to be the voice of reason in any circumstance. She's unbelievably calm even in the most unexpected and unreasonable of situations, with steady hands and a strong heart that makes it near impossible to shake her concentration or confidence. Sooyeon also keeps her spaces reasonably neat, which is part compulsion but also part necessity (because giving first aid in a rush can be dangerous without the right tools). Some about it but once she's efficiently given first aid, you'll be surprised how fast people stop.

"Take a breath and start over for me."

With a patience that seems larger than the ocean, Sooyeon never seems to lose her cool, especially for petty or emotional reasons. She has no problems waiting whether for an answer or a resolution to a problem and she's indescribably reliable, the one to count on for favors no matter how big or small. She accomplishes things with an enviable ease that makes others wonder if she's some cyborg but honestly, they can't dislike her for it, not when she's the only one not telling them to "hurry" nor when she promises she's "got this" and the reassurance following it.

"...I see"

Not one for many words, Sooyeon is found more to be a listener than a speaker. With a clearer picture of the situation, combined with her observant nature, people tend to listen when she speaks, especially since it is rare that it is a waste of anyone's time. She is, as stated before, quite observant. She has a photographic memory that gives her information about people's likes, dislikes, even habits and hobbies, and more (birthdays of course too). It's helpful but slightly disconcerting having someone know so deeply about you without explicit, purposeful reciprocation in information.

"I'll be in my cabin if you need me."

In contrast to the obvious expressions of other people, Sooyeon is obviously inexpressive. Her emotions are shown through the slightest change of expression, the raise of one brow meaning curiosity and the slightest quirk of her lips meaning pleasure or lack thereof. As a result, and due to her obviously introvertive nature, Sooyeon is seen as (and can be)  unsociable. She's more likely to curl up with a book below deck then attend a raid-well-done party on deck. She's not one for crowds and seems to be most comfortable when the people present can be counted on one hand.

"So?"

Never mincing words, Sooyeon always gets straight to the point. Her words can, admittedly, be positive but most of the time her words hit stab straight into the heart, never afraid to hit below the belt as long as it gets her point across. It's eye-openingly frightening to have someone who, due to her observant nature, know you so well and tell you how it is not working out. Due to disconcerting observations, a sharp and blunt tongue, and her lack of expression, Sooyeon intimidates people initially. Her threats are also followed through when necessary so her promises are real. Watch out.

background »

"I apologize Mother, but I am not a lady."

An orphan when little but adopted at the age of 7 when her intelligence was clearly above average, Sooyeon was raised by the noblelady (single parent) to be another lady, hopefully marrying into a social class above. However, she found more interest in the field of medicine and in between lessons in cooking, cleaning, sewing, and other household duties, she self-taught herself (through lovely books and some self-experimentation) the study of medicine. When she was 18, she straightforwardly told her (adoptive) mother that she wished to be a doctor and not a lady. It didn't go so well.

"I may be a traveler, but I have more medicinal knowledge than that blubbering buffoon."

Kicked out with a basket of food and a commoner's month wage, Sooyeon came upon a small village on a cliffside while on the way to another city, hoping to apprentice to an actual doctor. The town doctor, she saw first, was an idiot. He was some kind of shaman praying to an obscure deity and performing ridiculous rituals. ("Killing a chicken over someone's head does not heal an infection!") She pushed him aside, used herbs she had found on her travels, and was accepted as the town's new doctor, immediately having to heal half the town's occupants who were down with the flu.

"If it pleases you, may I join you?"

Sooyeon first saw Sarang and Jaehwa at the foot of her bed in the middle of the night, Jaehwa bleeding out on her rug and Sarang pointing a sword at her, demanding to see the town doctor. Sooyeon, who would never let a stranger die anyways, quickly got to work, bossing Sarang around because "Do you want me to save your friend or not?" After Jaehwa was in the clear, she made Sarang come pick more herbs and made a logical argument that she had to stock up on supplies since Jaehwa used it all and just in case of infection. That was the start of a beautiful, dangerous friendship.

family »

"I'm sorry Mother, but thank you. For everything."

Proud, regal, but terrible at expressing her feelings, Sooyeon's mother, Choi Soojin (faceclaim: Kim Misook) was a noblelady who had lost her husband to tuberculosis the previous year before adopting Sooyeon. She was harsh, critical, but loving and would disguise her love with casual curiosity or other excuses. Despite everything, Soojin did love Sooyeon very much. She hopes Sooyeon will change her mind and come home; she has left everything to Sooyeon in her will and not taken another heir(ess).

reason for joining the crew »

"The village is in safe hands but I'm more worried about you."

In total, Jaehwa and Sarang had been in the village a month because Jaehwa, as Sooyeon had feared, had gotten infected. When Jaehwa and Sarang were leaving, Sooyeon asked to come with them; they had been friends once the month had ended and, Jaehwa had noted with increasing exasperation, Sooyeon was one of few who could logically convince Sarang why certain things should (not) be done. Sooyeon had had an apprentice in the village and didn't worry about leaving the village and she just wanted to be with someone she (platonically) loved again; Sarang was it.

"Sarang, I love you (platonically), but that was terrible."

Who knew that noblewoman cooking classes were to come in handy? Enough said.

the one and only.

love interest » applicant

backup love interest » Ara

in love »

"If you need anything - anything - just ask."

When in love, Sooyeon is ridiculously obvious. She goes out of her way to spend a little more time with them, is willing to do almost anything for them, and can always be seen casually giving them once-overs "to make sure they're ok." Unfortunately, her love interest is more than likely to not notice her affections (or pass it off as a 'to everyone' thing) and so it's Sooyeon pining and everyone else teasing but silently cheering her on. Sooyeon is naturally terrible at flirting, just for the record, and there was no Noblewoman Seduction Course101 back when she was being educated.

last words.

comments/suggestions » I honestly have no idea if Sooyeon will be to your liking but I hope you like her anyways.

scene requests »

 • Ara about to do something stupid and everyone's tried talking her out of it. Sooyeon comes down from her room for the first time in a while, hears about it, tells Ara "No." and Ara pouts but relents and everyone just...???

 • Jaehwa pestering Sooyeon to call him "The J" and Sooyeon looks him straight in the eye and, deadpan, tells him, "Jaehwa. I am in the middle of reading and if you're still here in two pages, I will throw you overboard."

 • The other pirate crew members just getting into a lot of shenanigans and Sooyeon somehow managing to avoid being in the same room for every single one of them. Eventually, people joke that she's psychic or magical.

 • After the above inside joke, someone convinces one of the newest crew members (probably the cabin boy) that Sooyeon is an actual witch and everyone watches as the cabin boy freaks out every time Sooyeon is in the same room.

 • Jaehwa and Sarang getting into an argument over who should tell Sooyeon about "it" and Sooyeon walks in on one of their biggest fights because Sooyeon's mother sent her a letter and everyone doesn't know what to do.
