BACKGROUND matsumoto tsuta was born in the kansai region of japan to her parents. when she was three years old, her family went on a trip to korea to visit her mom's mom, aka grandma. tsuta doesn't remember much about things back then, but grandma said her mom was really sick and didn't have much time left. of february sixth two thousand, her parents went out to celebrate her mother's birthday and never came back. they were in a freak car accident, leaving grandma to adopt tsuta and raise her.

she and grandma never had a lot of money, since grandma was basically retired and only received government assistance. as such, a lot of the things tsuta had were old hand-me-downs or thrift store goods. tsuta was enrolled in preschool, where she spent a lot of her time. the tv shows she watched were in korean, her friends spoke korean, her world entire world except for her grandmother was korean. as a result, korean took over as the main language in her mind, making her japanese very limited when she grew up. grandma encouraged her from a young age to succeed, that failure was not an option, that she had to be twice as good as her korean peers to get respect and being a young, impressionable child, tsuta had those words ingrained into her head.

tsuta, thanks to her grandmother's words, developed a fear of incompetence at an early age. whenever tsuta didn't bring home an utter success, the look of quiet disappointment on her grandma's face as well as her pessimistic musings were too much for tsuta to bear. one day after tsuta entered and lost a dance competition, her grandma pulled her aside as she cried and said to her: "ah my tsutsu, do you not like feeling like this?" no baachan! "then you should do whatever it takes to win, even if it means hurting other people. humans are already selfish creatures, stepping over each other for happiness. it's how you survive in this world, my tsutsu.".

grandma lost her vision when tsuta was thirteen years old. it had been going for a while, but she was declared legally blind on tsuta's thirteenth birthday. grandma learned how to get along just fine, while tsuta was constantly worried about her safety. tsuta started thinking about what she should do with her life, how she could support her grandma, and after hearing one too many idol success stories, decided that would be what she would do. her grandma didn't discourage her, but told her to think thoroughly about it because doing things on a whim could prove to be more trouble than they were worth.

tsuta totally didn't do that and auditioned for many, many different entertainment industries with her dancing, ten in total. big hit was the first to accept her at the age of seventeen. during her time at big hit, she dabbled in many, many things like singing and rapping, as well as composing and producing and was able to cultivate many skills in the short period of time she was a trainee. she because close with another japanese trainee, a girl by the name of mori mume. her instructors commented on how amazing it was to see her skills grow, describing her as someone who didn't seem to try hard, but actually retained information down to the smallest nuance. she had to work and train for years to get to a halfway decent skill level, and continues to improve after debut.

once trv was confirmed to be a thing that was happening, tsuta and mori mume were part of the initial lineup. however, tsuta remember her grandma's words, "do whatever it takes to win, even if it means hurting other people". she knew mume had a better chance of making the final lineup. she knew she was expendable. she knew this was what she wanted to do with her life to support her grandmother, so she did something she is totally not proud of, which resulted in mume being let go from the company.

because tsuta joined the company in 2014, she had zero interactions with bangtan as a trainee. she has a love-hate relationship with jungkook because he's very talented and they're same age friends but damn it he's too good and she has to be better than him. tsuta constantly tries to one up him and almost always fails, which really pisses her off. she's always trying to fight him like lord tsuta, just let the dude live. jeon jungkook is an apex of talent that she wishes to surpass, so she begrudgingly enjoys his existence because it gives her greatness to strive for. jungkook thinks she's really weird and is kinda scared of her because she's always glaring at him, but she's pretty cool, he thinks.

she doesn't know how she should feel about namjoon. on one hand, he's very smart and talented but on the other hand, the words "i'm y like a star" have left his mouth before. plus he's a , so matsumoto tsuta will do her best to protect all her girlfriends from him. tsuta thinks that jin is handsome and kind, if not a little awkward. insists that jin is the home of unrecognized talent, but that's really because she's basically the jin of trv.

tsuta also admires hoseok's dance skills and choreography. she honestly loves that thing he does with his limbs, you know that thing, the flailing his arms and legs like they're rubber. tsuta kinda has a small crush on hoseok, he's just so bright and nice and handsome and he's so cute when he dances. tsuta has asked him to help be a better choreographer and unlike yoongi's non-committal yes, hoseok gladly takes her under his wing. ( seeing her babies dancing together really makes mom xie happy ).

the 95z kinda intimidate tsuta. they're too bright, too dazzling for her phlegmatic eyes to observe. she enjoys observing the way they play together, but isn't one to approach them herself. taehyung speaks with her the most, trying to drag her along with his wild adventures and making her feel like she's one of the guys while jimin is much more reserved around her and gets flustered if taehyung embarrasses him while she's around.

the two met during their trainee years and tsuta was so excited to meet another japanese person! mume took tsuta under her wing, teaching tsuta the foundations of composition and choreography. their skill level had a decent sized gap. mume was better at singing, dancing, and rapping so tsuta always fell short compared to her. still, the girls remained close and mume told tsuta some of her deepest, darkest secrets and honestly, she did some pretty messed up to survive.

mori mume had grown up poor, like tsuta, the only difference was that mume had siblings to take care of. she'd scam people out of their money in order to support her siblings. tsuta contemplated the morality of mume's actions, figuring they were justified because of their good intentions. in return, tsuta told her how badly she wanted to debut so she could take care of her grandma, how scared she was of the older woman's death. they were friends and confidants, until trv came into the picture.

tsuta kicked into a hyper-vigilant competitive mode, but knew that unless drastic actions were taken, mume would be the one to debut instead of her and that was unacceptable because that would mean that tsuta was incompetent and that she would be the one to not win. that would mean she wouldn't be able to give her grandma everything she deserves! and that would be unacceptable. so, naturally, she did what any sane person would do and decided to ruin mume's reputation.

tsuta worked discreetly, under the guise of online anonymity. she went on a forum where a lot of underground hip hop fans lurked and made a post titled 'big hit trainee mori mume's list of offenses' which was just nothing but slander made from some lies and some truths. the reaction was almost immediate, incredibly strong uproar from the public and brought big hit under a lot of scrutiny by netizens because were they really gonna debut someone with the supposed track list mori mume had? as a result of all the backlash, big hit had to let mume go. mume knew that there could only be one person would had the dirt on her to do something like this, her so called best friend. for some reason, mume didn't rat tsuta out, perhaps she had much darker plans in mind. eventually, the backlash became too much for mume to handle, so she planned to head back to japan.

but after trv's debut, a lot of hate online seems to be specifically targeting tsuta, and that worries her.

as a trainee, she had a focus on dancing but also explored other subjects like singing, rapping, and composition. when it came to dance evaluations, she would often create her own choroegraphy, which earned praise from her instructors and scorn from her peers. tsuta saw all of her fellow trainees as competition, even the future members of trv. when she was a teenager, tsuta was very high strung and aggressive, someone who was goal-oriented and unhinged in her desire to win. after the mume incident, tsuta became much more private and mellowed out a lot because all her negative energy was bad for her skin.

she was a strong contender for the lead vocal, lead dance position because of her dancing skills, but staff decided that her voice was too weak to be a lead vocal contender. however, staff still wanted her as part of the group because of how much growth she displayed as a trainee, she they shoved her into the vocalist slot.
