“Just admit it, Jess,” Jonghyun grins, nudging her side, the girl who’s eyes are someplace else, nose in the air, obviously ignoring his self-praise, “I am handsome. That’s the reason why I’m your boyfriend, isn’t it?”

She finally decides to give him a tiny chance when his eyes widen and his pink lips jut out into a cute pout (she can’t stand times like this, where she just has to give into him because he’s so cute - which is probably the reason why he always does this to her).

“No, stupid. My reason’s a lot better than that,” she says with an air of confidence, even though inside she’s smiling and can’t help but admit that he is the most handsome one in her eyes (girls have to play hard to get, isn’t that part of the girl code, or something? At least, that’s what her mother says).

“Ugh. I absolutely hate guessing. Change of topic; anyway, I know you love me, no matter what. Where do you want to go later in the year? I can take you somewhere, now that my job’s paying well.”

Jessica flashes a wide smile. “That’s great! But I thought we want to save up for an apartment? I’m kind of sick of this tiny studio that we have to stick with because your mom will only give this to us.”

“C’mon, my mom’s not that bad. Anyway, I calculated, and we can afford to go somewhere for about a week. As long as it’s not somewhere on the other side of the Earth or something.” Jonghyun smiles back, putting his hand to the back of his nape, pursing his lips as he tries to figure out the number of possibilities.

Jessica frowns deeply, looking at the invisible world map in her head, that she’s memorized just for the fun of it, and whines, “That rules out Paris, doesn’t it?” And when he nods sadly, she folds her arms over her chest. “Darn. Paris is always a good idea and we can’t go there?”

“Sorry,” is all he says, but his eyes and tone are so genuine that Jessica can’t help but melt inside, sighing to herself inaudibly. She knows that she can’t blame him; after all, she’s the one in their relationship that can’t stand the apartment and the one who doesn’t want to stay in it, so she can’t blame him.

Jonghyun looks at his feet apologetically, upset that he even brought up the idea, because now he’s thinking that it was stupid to even ask where she wanted to go. Jessica looks over at him and laces her finger with his.

“There is one place though, I don’t need a single cent to be there. In fact, I’m already there, and I’m happy with that.”

He looks up at her with a surprised expression, his eyebrows arching up and head cocking to one side at a perfect twenty degree angle. Her lips break into a grin, and he blushes as soon as the words leave them.

“Kim Jonghyun’sheart.”

“God, I love you, Jessica,” he says, already cheering up.

Her smile turns smug, as she presses her lips onto his, “I love you too, stupid.”

Victoria wonders whether she’ll ever be able to hear the velvety, gentle voice that calls out her name affectionately anymore. If, in her life, she’ll ever lay her eyes upon the man who loved her, at least, for a certain period of time. His name is Shim Changmin, and until today, she still has absolutely no idea where he’d disappeared to three years ago.

The worst part about their relationship is that she still thinks about it. A lot. She thinks about the hot days when her head would be on his lap, her waist-length hair braided by him while she on her mint-chocolate ice cream. She thinks about the cooler days when she would cuddle in his bed with him under the heated covers, his arm sliding around her waist, sneaking kisses on her shoulder, her neck and her collarbones when she doesn’t notice (she only pretends to, she actually is completely aware). She thinks about the normal days, when they would walk out to the nearest park and take a short walk to the playground, where he would push her on the swings, her laughter ringing like a bell, harmonizing with his.

Her friends, Sulli, Yoona, Minho, Donghae, all of them have told her to stop thinking about him. She’s tried many times, but the more she tries, the more she does it. It’s not humanly possible to forget a man like Shim Changmin. He gave her so much, and she gave him her all. After that, she knew better.

She knew better than to give every part of her, sacrifice her free time to men, even those who she’s dated for a particularly long period of time. Of course, Victoria still makes sure that she’s sincere to the men she dates, but there’s a certain piece of her that belongs to Changmin only. Shim Changmin, no less.

It’s the piece that holds all the beautiful memories, painful or not, the piece that holds the happiness, the innocence, the beauty of a first love. The feeling that she gets when he smiles at her, the butterflies in her heart when he says Qian, the jealousy that stabs her heart when he’s with other girls… The fights between her and Changmin, the cold wars, the almost-break-ups-that-never-happen… The one that has everything that she thought love would be… until she was proven wrong.

The mostpainful part of remembering is the part where Changmin left. He had left with nothing but a tiny slip of paper. All it said was, I’m sorry I have to go. I love you, so much. Please forgive me.

She never could forget him. She loved him too much to pull herself away from the fact that he must have had a reason to leave like this, because his love for her seemed like it could last forever; or at least, she thought it did. For months she hated him, hated that he’d packed up his things and disappeared like that, without a trace. But a year later, she learned to forgive (it took that long). Forgetting though, was—is the hard part.

She won’t forget him. Never.

She’ll always love him. Forever.

Her members are always probing, asking questions about why she comes back so late at night sometimes. Why, after their schedules, she heads somewhere else alone? Once or twice Yoona has piped up with the suggestion that Tiffany’s dating, but nobody ever believes it. Tiffany’s the kind that’s always wary about SNSD’s image. If anything, she would be the last to get into a romantic relationship. And even if she does, she would tell them.

On the other hand, the Super Junior members keep the relationship under wraps. As far as possible, they use Hyoyeon as a distraction, and always push Eunhyuk to her, forcing them to interact. As much as it pains Tiffany, she knows that if she wants to date someone like Eunhyuk, she’ll have to work with the plan. The reason why she doesn’t want to tell her members is because, clearly, Taeyeon will blurt it out all of a sudden, or Yoona will start telling other people, and her secret… it will never be safe!

But Super Junior, on the other hand, even though on the surface they might seem cheeky and mischievous, are all very responsible and mature people. If Tiffany wants them to keep it a secret, then it’s a secret. Even Kyuhyun helps out, but that’s mostly because he’s sick of Eunhyuk begging him (then there’s Leeteuk who takes away his Starcraft, and sometimes Siwon just refuses to play with him when Leeteuk doesn’t).

On the whole though, Super Junior are very helpful.

The rest of it, however, is up to them. Whenever Tiffany comes back to their dorm at night, Taeyeon’s always lurking in the dark, trying to find out what exactly it is she does outside. Tiffany doesn’t show it, but in her sleep, she always mumbles random sentences, things about how she doesn’t want to leave, how she loves him (somehow, to Taeyeon’s frustrations, she doesn’t mention his name), little details about their dates. Taeyeon just thinks that she goes out with friends, but something tells her, even though she doesn’t want to believe it, that Tiffany really is dating.

Perhaps it’s the way she giggles for no reason when she’s on her own. Perhaps it’s the way she smiles mysteriously when she’s listening to music in her iPod (she never lets anyone see what song she’s listening to). Perhaps it’s the way she goes early for her musical practices (Taeyeon wonders if it could be Eunhyuk). But it doesn’t seem possible, because doesn’t Eunhyuk like Hyoyeon? It’s so obvious that even Hyoyeon believes it.

“Taeyeon suspects us, you know?”

“Let her suspect all she wants. She’ll never know the truth anyway. And besides, I know her secret.”

“She has a secret?”

“Everyone has a secret, Miyoung.”

“What is it? Tell me!”

“Calm down, calm down.”

“All right…”

“She kissed Leeteuk hyung backstage after the Seoul Music Awards.”

the sound of your voice, it comforts me

The SHINee members always yell at Jonghyun because of his cockiness, his arrogance, his pride in himself. When no one’s looking (except s), he loves listening to his own voice and compliments himself about it. But they have this misconception that his own voice is his favourite sound in the entire universe (Key convinced them), because there’s only one other voice that Jonghyun thinks his voice isn’t even comparable. And for him to think that, he or she has to have the most beautiful sound in the universe.

Either that or he’s in love with her.

When he’s really alone, his phone unlocks a private list of songs, the collection of every song sung by one musical prodigy by the name of Lee Jieun, better known as IU. Her voice is his guilty pleasure, and every time he listens to her, everything, virtually everything becomes instantly better. He finds it amusing how her talking voice and singing voice are as different as day and  night, so he secretly keeps a playlist of her talking cuts. Laughing cuts are there too, audio versions because it’s much easier to download.

During Immortal Song, Minho asked if Jonghyun had a crush. On IU’s voice. Under the dim light in their van, Jonghyun blushed, but shook his head quickly and said no as calm as he could. It sounded a little strange, but Minho shrugged and just nodded. He had almost been caught, so he reminded himself to be more careful the next time he goes on Immortal Song.

When IU watches the episodes of Immortal Song, she notices that Jonghyun always watches her with that stunned expression, or the dazed expression, that of a lovesick boy. She smiles and laughs; even though she knows that lots of people admire her voice, she never knew that Jonghyun liked her (voice) that much. He’s never showed signs of it anyway. The awkward hug hadn’t meant anything. At least, that was what she thought.

And so one day, when IU happens to spot Jonghyun in the SM Building (she just visited Sulli and SNSD), she stops in her tracks and says hi, smiling charmingly. He looks up with a bright smile on his face, and he shifts his weight from foot to foot, wishing that she isn’t that mesmerizing. Contrary to what IU thinks, Jonghyun loves her nose. He thinks it’s cute.

“I saw you on Immortal Song…” IU begins, and Jonghyun immediately blushes, knowing what she means, “and I was wondering… what do you like about my voice? I mean, it’s not like it’s that… impressive…”

IU trails off, gesturing in an attempt to explain herself, while laughing nervously. She’s had a lot of training on talking to people, but somehow, Jonghyun makes her uneasy.

Jonghyun his dry lips and gulps. He hasn’t seen her for a few weeks, and now that she approaches him without warning him, his mind goes blank. “The sound of your voice—it… comforts me,” he blurts out, then his hands fly up to cover his mouth, as if he’s said something wrong. IU laughs, flushing pink as well.

Before she knows it, she blurts out something unexpectedly too.

“I like you too.”
