40 Questions

Hi! Someone tagged me with this post on tumblr and I felt like sharing it here because I would like to know more about you guys and yeah, feel free to repost this with your own answers. As the title suggests, it's a 40 K-pop Questions thing and I know how super original I am with the title. If you manage to get to this part, I applaud you since I'm already rambling and I want to hit my head now.

Anyway, here we go!

1. Favorite solo artist
This is hard. I would go with Sunggyu. It's less because he's part of INFINITE and more because of his music style in general - it's alternative rock when it comes to his "Another Me" and in "27" he went for a subdued, less grungy sound which I loved. The guy's musical inclinations resonate mine, I guess. Rock got me into music in general. If it wasn't Sunggyu, it'd be Seo In Guk.

2. TOP 5 Bias Groups
(1) INFINITE would be at top, no surprise there. Their entire existence and continuing improvement is the reason I haven't given up on K-pop yet. (2) EPIK HIGH would be next (I know they're more rap than pop but semantics really).
(3) BIGBANG deserves a spot here just for being the group that got me into K-pop back in 2011.
(4) SNSD aka Jessica aka my heart still hurts; you can call me a senior fan, I got into this just when they started bringing the boys out.
(5) T-ARA. I was obsessed with them, scandals or no. I still know the entire dance to "Roly Poly" and "Lovey-Dovey".

Honorable mention: B2ST for all those years of singing 'fiction in fiction'.

3. Do you ship anyone?
Okay, my works alone dictate I ship the entirety of INFINITE with each other. But delving back into the past, I was a huge proponent of G-Ri and TaeSica (TaeSica is still alive, nothing can convince me otherwise).

4. What fangroup(s) do you identify with? (i.e. VIP, Blackjack, etc…)
Back when I first started out here in this world of K-pop, I mostly identified myself as a VIP because I loved BIGBANG and I loved the reception I got from fellow VIPs. However, over the years, the glimmer of K-pop faded for me and I saw the ugliness that was present in fangroups - the bashing, the immaturity, the concerningly borderline hate fangroups have for each other - and not only did I isolate myself from that negativity, I avoided identifying with fangroups in general. I'm still a fan of BIGBANG, and many other artists, but I no longer associate with fangroups.

5. How did you get into kpop?
The Hallyu wave set its foothold here in the Philippines back around the time Super Junior got extremely popular with "Sorry, Sorry", 2NE1 with "Fire" and 4MINUTE with "Hot Issue" (that song even became a theme song for a TV show here called Eat Bulaga). I heard about it then, even danced to "Sorry, Sorry" for a school project but I actually got into K-pop when I was a freshman in college, around 2011, after seeing Seungri's music video for VVIP and the choreography intrigued me and...yeah, that's how it started.

6. Do you know how to speak Korean?
Not so much. I can't get the accent right, and accent is important in most East Asian languages. However I can pick up a few sentences from others. It also helps that I have many Korean friends, many of which indulge my wish to understand them so they speak to me in a mishmash of English and Korean and I try to make heads or tails of it. To be honest, my own native language is hard for me to speak because I grew up speaking English and my tongue has gotten used to the hard accents of the language, so whenever I try to speak the fluidity of Korean and Japanese, I sound stupid. Haha.

7. Have you gone to any kpop concerts?
Nope. It still hurts me whenever I think about it because most of the concerts (BIGBANG's Alive tour; INFINITE's OGS and INFINITE EFFECT) were in Manila and the tickets were wildly expensive. However, I am determined to attend INFINITE's next world tour, so I'm saving up for that now.

8. Do you have any kpop merch?
I have albums and posters.

9. Do you watch variety shows?
Not so much, unless it involves the groups that I follow. One stands up in my memory: I always, always loved re-watching Girls' Generation's Horror Movie Factory (2009). It cemented my love for Taeyeon and Jessica.

10. TOP 3 Biases?
(1) Hoya. Quadruple threat, and he inspired me to take up dancing lessons.
(2) Jessica. I think it's mostly because I can relate to her, or the character SM used to showcase her as. I'm quite used to people calling me 'cold and y'. Problem is, they're not wrong most of the time. Hahah.
(3) Jiyeon. I feel like I'm attracted to the sassier, colder-looking members of the group.

11. What was the first KPOP song you immediately liked upon hearing?
하루 하루 (Haru Haru) by BIGBANG.

12. A kpop group you really don’t like or don’t want to give a try?
There really isn't a group I actively dislike. It's more of that I really don't care about the new groups. I'm the type of fan that when I find a niche I love, it's hard for me to open up and look for other music genres and not compare each with the other. So, there's no group I dislike and there's a lot of groups I don't want to give a try.

13. Do ya got a feelin that ur Loof is on fiyah?
Not a BAP fan, but I do get the reference. EYK once made a game about drinking a shot every time BAP sang in Engrish. I don't want to try that game as I am a very noisy drunk.

14. Who is your LEAST favourite idol/ female or male?
I don't have a least favourite idol. If they don't interest me, I could care less about them. Thus, even if I did have a least favourite idol, I wouldn't even know who they are. That's how much I don't care about them. haha.

15. Do you listen to solo artists as much as groups?
Yes, actually, as well as groups from other genres beyond K-pop.

16. What has been your favourite comeback of the year?
This year? I don't actively follow general K-pop news so, like, no favourite comback. However last year, it was both INFINITE's Reality and GG's Lion Heart.

17. What is your least favourite concept/era from your favourite group?
The more recent albums of BIGBANG, except for Alive/Still Alive era. I don't know, I feel like they've lost the lyricism that made them who they were. I miss the days and the creativity of the Tonight era, as well as Stand Up.

18. Has your bias acted in any films or dramas at all?
Yes. T__T Hoya is such a great actor. It was like falling in love with him all over again. A beautiful pain, I'm sure.

19. Are you one of those ppl that stans over trainees or groups before they debut?
No.

20.Who was your first bias ever in the KPOP industry?
Taeyang. Wedding Dress was my jam.

21. If you had a Korean name, what would it be?
I usually dislike these questions because they sound really pretentious to me, but my friend Sungmin did baptise me with the moniker "Daehyun".

22.Who would you want as an older brother?
Kim Myungsoo. I love photography as much as I love writing, and I like his style - he's surprisingly eloquent when it comes to his photobook entries. I wouldn't mind sharing tips and bonding over it with him.

23. Who would you want as an older sister?
Jung Eunji. Her laughter makes me smile and I really find her exceptionally pretty.

24. Funniest couple?
I...don't know. lol.

25.If your bias kissed you, how would you react?
First of all, that would be greatly impossible as he would have to cross an ocean to get to me. Secondly, I doubt he would because I'm a guy, and althoug I am a huge stan of gender equality, I know that not all male K-pop idols have with each other as fanfics dictate. Thirdly, if he did, I would punch him in the face because I do not want the fangirls to hunt me down. Fourth, if he's not pissed with me, I might kiss him back. Might.

26. If your bias asked you to marry him/her, how would you react?
Honey, you're cute and all but I'm like 21 and I don't want to get married yet, even if it's to you.

27. Worst-looking idol?
I don't find them unattractive actually. They all have a certain charm that attracts specific people. Like, I'm more partial to the ruggedness of Hoya in comparison to Myungsoo's flower boy visual. On opposite stream, I prefer Jessica's classical beauty, but I can find the appeal in Hyoyeon's genuine facial expressions. It's all about variety and individuality, and I think that's what resonsates in a fan what they like most about their idol.

28. TOP or G-Dragon? (Big Bang)
G-Dragon for his themes and just his story of starting at the bottom to reaching the top. I wasn't a fan of T.O.P., but his release of Doom Dada and the myriad of artistic references he used in the music video multiplied how interesting he was in my eyes. You can never go wrong with Salvador Dali, and T.O.P. played that wonderfully.

29. Which company is your favourite?
Woollim, solely for INFINITE and Nell. I love how they implement less restrictions with their artists, allowing them to express themselves through cover videos and photo books and solo albums. I know it's mostly for promotion, but hey, at least they get to do the things they love.

30. In terms of looks, which group is the best?
I don't want to answer this because the answer is already obvious. lol.

31. In terms of songs, which group is the best?
Same with question 30. Hint, the group's name is synonymous with "never-ending" or "endless". While a majority of K-pop find musical niches where they exploit the strengths of their members (and cover the weaknesses of each other), that usually makes their sound repetitive and, well, boring. My favourite group, although known for their 99.99% synchronized dancing, is also known for their classical rock sound. However, recent comebacks had them exploring out to other musical genres, such as EDM and synth, and I love how they (not just the band but the production team as well) managed to incorporate new ventures of music yet keep the sound true to their base root in classical rock. Their most recent lead single was epicness of all proportions, with the synths and the strings reverberating around an EDM beat yet never failing to deliver their artists' vocal harmony into a well-projected sound. Betting on you, indeed.

32. Which group would you prefer to be classmates with in real life?
I haven't really thought about it, maybe because I'm somewhat within their age groups and I'm working, so I don't really think about such things.

33. Who would you want as a best friend?
Hoya. I cannot count how many times I've been called out for having a smart mouth.

34. Who would you want as a boyfriend?
No one?? I don't have the time for that right now.

35. Who would you want as a friend with benefit?
Benefits, with an 's'. Also, Mino because yes.

36. Who would you want as a husband?
Lee Jungyeop, aka papa Woollim.

37. How many kids will you have with him then?
Considering it's biologically impossible for either of us to have a child without scientific interventions, zilch.

38. Which kpop star do you wish to have a body like?
Hyung-don from Weekly Idol.

39. Which kpop star do you wish to have a face like?
lol no one.

40. Lastly, which group would you prefer to work with in real life?
Orange Caramel because they're so pretty.

I'm sorry. I thought it would be more into music but then it got into, well, weirder ventures. As you can see, I haven't followed K-pop for a while now so this was as boring as I imagined it to be. Then again, it also made me rethink certain things that I used to like about K-pop. Oh well.
