Let's not hate

So, I saw something really sweet today: I was at a bakery and the customers in front of me were a gay couple with their adorable little daughters. They were really cute, but their cashier and every other person there seemed to think the opposite since they were making blatantly disgusted expressions. She was about to say something...

When the manager stepped in and shooed her away into the kitchen. Instead of echoing everyone else's homophobic attitudes, he gave the family the... nicest smile and recommended some items for them to try - he even gave the little girls cake pops.

Of course, he did something that should be expected from all businesses everywhere, but this was in a rather prejudiced part of town. I've seen a lot of places treat minorities in general pretty poorly, but seeing this one guy standing up for this one family really made my day.

This was, in fact, in the most conservative corner of my district's Koreatown. And although it's unfair to stereotype Koreans as homophobic, it's unfortunately true that a lot of Koreans within a certain age range that live in that area are VERY racist, ist, and definitely homophobic. But this one guy, who was well into his 30s, maybe 40s - he completely ignored everyone else and treated this family like they deserved to be treated.

And hell yeah, it felt good.

As a Korean, I was so proud that even our more spiteful groups were learning to be tolerant. It was just so nice to watch.

not only is that a terribly nice gesture but if i were to see the same behaviour, especially coming from the manager, i'd feel more inclined to go to that bakery more and more. not only is that man doing something that should be human nature - something as simple and easy as breathing - it also shows that he values his customers, he doesn't simply see them as machines who roll in the dough. it's nice to know you can go into a place and not feel judged or critiqued.
