innocent reader : update soon VS 'writer' : no, b*tch how dare you

I actually don't want to make a rant blog for stupid matter, but I've been on AFF for 3 years, I watch AFF slowly changing into a kindergarten. Too many stupid dramas, too many fake people, too many blog about stupid stuff, just too many stupidity. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE AFF, will always do. Just the people in it. I think that's why I only come here now to update stories, and refrain myself from talking to people.

Recently, I notice some usual pet peeve on AFF blog mostly (nah, it's not directed to certain people, but hey, if the shoes fit, why the hell not)

Story comments

Oh don't we all just love that? (personally i do like comments more than upvotes or subscribers)

But some people find it very annoying if readers only leave "update soon" type of comments, and they feel the need to call those readers bad names, and insult. I find it pathetic to be honest, i find it very childish as well. They don't even criticize your stories, or even bash you, why the hell do you have to insult the readers who are not even wrong to begin with?

So you are telling me if someone writes "update soon" on your story, that person needs to get bashed and to be made fun of?

Alright, i get that you are busy saving the world and try to find cancer cure, so if you update your story, you expect your readers to type long praising comments for your determination or constructive criticism---LOL what am i saying? People on here hate constructive criticism.

But seriously, to the point of bashing someone just because they leave 'update soon'?

Short comment is still a comment, it's still an appreciation even if it's short. Short comments still let writers know that readers are expecting their updates (which is very delightful for me that people are so eager to read more updates .. well that's for me). It's so mean, ungrateful, and uncalled for, if someone bashes their readers for writing short comments. Sure you don't get paid to write, so comments are nice, but they don't get paid either to comments. So?

Maybe if you keep getting those short comments of your readers, you need to ask yourself, what's wrong with yourself and your stories, that people always leave such a comment , not putting the blame on readers who don't have an obligation to type longer comment, just like you don't have an obligation to update :)

Or you know the easier way? just be grateful and mature ^^

I 100% agree with this!! I've been in this situation as a reader and I always leave comment but sometimes I didn't and then I started to neglect the author fic and the author thought I was taking things for granted and then I was being blocked. lol. So funny. I wish some authors were like you. I mean, yeah both writers and readers are the same but isn't it too harsh to ignore a reader when she/he was trying to be polite but get ignored by the writer. You got a point here. I'm very glad you bring this up. Both writers and readers need to read this up. Fighting! Have a good day ahead ^^

many writers wrote fics basis on what came into their mind and prompt them the urge to write and express out in expressive words..
Likewise, commenters comment basis of what came into their mind after reading the particular latest update or comment only after finished reading (if its a completed fic).
Esp for long update in just 1 chp, readers may have forgotten what they specifically wanna comment at the end and just comment basis of the overall and/or telling you their general feelings after reading while not forgetting to say 'wish for next update soon'!
some may even have no comments for that particular update because their favorite character/or bias did not appear? or commented but without saying thank you? and then writers gotten offended..thinking that readers treated them 'for granted'....?
anyhow, I definitely on agreeable side with u (100%), no readers (and writers) should be bashed or insulted.......... because this is just an online strangers sharing/exchanging fanfics thoughts....

If ever I would comment, I am one of those who write short comments, just so the author would know that I read the story and I liked it.

I share your opinion, but I still understand some authors...it's wrong to bash readers, but maybe they worked hard to write a chapter in order to update it as soon as possible and they don't get a reply...I'd find it annoying too (and usually I'm a silent reader). I started commenting only recently when I read the comment made by an author at the end of a chapter and I understood how frustrated she felt. I don't really like to leave comments because often it seems like your criticizing the authors instead of appreciating the fact that they updated, still I follow some fics that don't update for months and when the authors update complain about people telling them to update...I mean, c'mon, I forgot what the story was about in the gap of time you took to update, I know you have other things to do, but the least you can do is to appreciate the fact that we didn't leave the fic since it took you 5 months to update!
People should be grateful to each other and stop complaining about everything.

I can understand why authors are getting frustrated by those who leave those "update soon" comments.
There's a HUGE imbalance in time being spent between being an author and being a reader. How long does it take for someone to write a chapter, vs reading one and commenting?

>>Short comment is still a comment, it's still an appreciation even if it's short.

Is it really appreciation? It takes zero thought and effort to write that comment.
It's like one of your friends giving you a piece of paper that said "happy b-day" (written in pencil) on your birthday.

>>Sure you don't get paid to write, so comments are nice, but they don't get paid either to comments. So?

They actually are getting paid to comment; with a chapter.

>>Maybe if you keep getting those short comments of your readers, you need to ask yourself, what's wrong with yourself and your stories, that people always leave such a comment , not putting the blame on readers who don't have an obligation to type longer comment

How can you know what's wrong if people don't comment on what's wrong? "Update soon" sure won't help.

>>Or you know the easier way? just be grateful and mature ^^

Yes, I agree, but many authors HAVE been grateful/mature... and yet the number of silent readers (and short commenters) just keep increasing.
There's a reason why so many authors are leaving this site.

You are totally right about what you said!:) But the comments on aff are getting less and less ... I would love to get some more of the short comments to know whether the readers liked the chapter or not but most don't comment at all. I mean I have 700+ subscribers stories and I don't really care about the number of subs or upvotes (it still makes me happy, yes but like you I care more about comments) but I only get around 5-15 Comments for a chapter that has the right amount of suspense, sometimes plot twists and mostly leaving a few small questions behind that I also ask in the A/N at the end of each chapter. I always try to explain my readers why comments are so important to us authors but most of them seem to not understand or are just too young. And then I see stories with horrible grammar and cliche plots that have tons of subscribers and comments and I am like wtf o.o I even told my readers I am about to leave this site, then suddenly about 50 comments (within around 4 days) surfaced, I updated again, told them I would stay and ... everyone gets silent again. I even told them that I pushed back my studies for them but nothing ... Why is it so hard to get comments? I mostly go to review shops now and ask for reviews athough they take a lot of time because they are so detailed ... a comment shop would be great xD

Your last statement nailed it :) I couldn't agree more! They should sometimes learn to appreciate. I don't know about them but whenever I see that "update soon" comment, what comes into my mind is that they "enjoy the story so much that they can't wait for the next chapter". :)

lol i want to upvote this blog so many times, because truth has been spoken
well i'm an avid reader myself, i don't write stories, just read and comment .. i do those short comments all the time, but that's because i don't know what else to comment lol since i just want to give the author a big thank you, but usually the chapter is so short and not going anywhere, so i don't really know what to comment

I get you, I find some rude authors like that too. :( But some have it as a pet peeve because some of the comments 'update soon!' are not even genuine. I mean, when I was a relatively new author, I saw this three(?) idk--readers who left 'update soon!' comments on one of my stories. It made me feel elated, because I didn't think someone would actually read my stories. But then when I went to check their mutual subscriptions with mine, they didn't even have a single subscription on any of my stories and I figured they only left those comments to gain KPs. Most readers here in AFF do that, so I've observed. I'm not calling them out on it tho, I'm just letting them be since I get to earn some karma points from that as well anyway XD
