TRAINEE BACKGROUND » Ginny entered the SM Trainee program way back in 2001 when she was only 15 years old, hoping to become an idol just like the rest of the trainees who passed the auditions along with her. She joined also in the hopes that she can make something of herself and prove that she can be someone, as she has a lawyer, an architect, and a university professor for older sisters. However, training proved to be difficult for her as she was only decent in singing, dancing, acting and rapping. The one aspect of training that she really did well was in Styling and Etiquette, where they're taught how to dress up, package and brand themselves, how to conduct themselves in public. The pressure, unhappiness and the fact that she felt that she entered training for the wrong reasons proved to be catalysts and she withdrew from training, promising to somehow return to SM in a different scale, which she eventually did.

Ginny Kwon always tries so very (maybe, too) hard.

 

She tries very hard to be the best stylist there is, which she mostly succeeds in because she does have an eye for fashion (it doesn't hurt that she, herself, is very stylish and charming). She tries very hard to get a foot in fashion designing through her sketches, which have potential or mediocre, depending on who's being asked. She tries very hard to secure herself a higher position at SM, something which she's currently failing at... but she's working on it. She tries very hard to escape the shadows of her well-accomplished older sisters, which is still currently in the process. Finally, she tries very hard to hide a relationship, something she hopes and prays with all of her being that she won't fail miserably in... or it'll be a disaster of epic proportions.

 

Ginny Kwon is someone who knows what she wants and will work hard to get there. It's just that sometimes, what she wants doesn't want her back. She is determined and passionate, but can come of across as being an attention-seeker and a know-it-all. She hates being compared, most especially with her sisters, and strives to make a name for herself and make a career for herself. Always being compared to them and being in their shadows as the youngest has made her insecure and sometimes envious, traits that she tries so hard to pipe down and completely remove from herself.

Kwon Minji was born on 16 November 1986 to Kwon Seunghun and Park Sora. She is the youngest of four sisters with her older sisters being Minyoung, a lawyer, Minjung, an architect, and Minkyong, a university professor. With their father being a professor in English and a correspondent for international wire agencies and the desire to be able easily differentiate from one another, the sisters commonly use their English names. Therefore, the sisters are known as Annie, Ria, Sam, and Ginny, respectively.

 

Their mother is a housewife, the family relying financially on their father's income as well as inheritance both parents received from their own parents, and is therefore very hands on with her children, especially with their education, manners and etiquette and the way they dress. Having an educator for a father also meant that performing well in school is a must, which gave way to competition among the sisters, often times healthy and sometimes not, leading to sibling rivalry and fights. However, the relationship that the sisters have is generally positive and they are very close. Annie prefers to baby Ginny as the former is the eldest and the latter is the youngest while Ria and Sam like to tease and bully Ginny every now and then, but mostly out of affection.

 

Sam excelled most academically and even at a young age already had a desire to follow in her father's footsteps. For their parts, Annie excelled as a debator while Ria excelled in art. All of those meant that her older sisters, at time, overshadowed Ginny, especially Ria as Ginny also liked to draw,  and that there is expectation and pressure on her to do well in her own chosen field. Ginny did good in school and was decent at singing, dancing, and acting and figured that she can go for a career in the entertainment industry, convincing her parents to allow her to audition for SM Entertinament.

 

Ginny passed the audition and entered SM as a trainee in 2001. However, despite being hardworking and motivated, the pressure and difficulty of being a trainee proved to be more than she could handle as she only excelled in the Styling and Etiquette sessions. Despite her friends and her family convincing her to stay, Ginny withdrew from the trainee program just before the year crossed from 2002 to 2003.

 

She wrestled with self-confidence issues after that but her mother convinced her to go to college. Ginny enrolled in Keimyung University, where she eventually improved confidence-wise and graduated with a degree in Fashion Marketing. However, not wanting to associate SM with failure, she re-entered the company in 2009 not as a trainee but as a staff member, teaching the same lessons she excelled in eight years prior, figuring that she can just work her way up to a higher position in SM's Wardrobe and Design division. It is only when it's announced that SM is debuting another girl group that her job changes to being AEON's manager and stylist as the company feels that she needs to take her skills outside the classroom so to speak.

Ria Kwon Min Jung | Second eldest sister | 33 | Architect | Creative, playful, determined, very pregnant and ready to give birth soon. Growing up, Ria and Ginny often get into petty squabbles as they loved to tease and bully each other. However, Ginny knows that she can always depend on her sister to be objective and level-headed when giving advice and support. However, their shared interest in art sometimes causes a strain on their relationship as they are often compared with one another.

 

Sam Kwon Min Kyong | Third eldest sister | 31 | Economics professor | Pretty much Ria's sidekick, quiet, loves to cook, intelligent, hardworking. Ginny feels rather distant from Sam at times but knows her sister is willing to help her when needed, even if sometimes Sam complains as she does so. However, since Sam is the one closest in age, Ginny relates to her the most.

Jung Yunho | Best Friend | 29 | Idol | Protective, charming, mature, hardworking, determined. Yunho's one of the senior trainees who entered SM a year before Ginny and they ended being best friends. It was Yunho and Dana who always encouraged her whenever she'd feel so exhausted during trainees and he's one of those convinced her to do what's best for her when she was thinking of leaving. Even as Ginny left SM, they continued to be friends and communicated through text messages and the like. She rushes to be by his side, although secretly, when he is nearly poisoned by a sasaeng fan. Their friendship strengthened even more upon Ginny's return to SM.

 

Hong Sungmin (Dana) | Best Friend | 29 | Idol | Motherly, calm, focused, patient. Dana is one of the two other female trainees who entered SM in 2001 along with Kwon Yuri and the three girls sort of formed a trio. Like Yunho, Dana was her source of advice and encouragement although Dana preferred that Ginny'd stay as a trainee, she ultimately encouraged her best friend to do what she wants. Dana is the one who informs her about the job opening in SM, which marks Ginny's return to the company

 

Kwon Yuri | Good Friend | 25 | Idol | A bit tomboyish, can be moody, sweet, thoughtful. Yuri is the last 1/3 of the trio formed by herself, Ginny, and Dana during their trainee years. As she is younger than the two, she is basically the baby of the group and she and Ginny like to pretend that they're related. She is the one who takes it the hardest when she finds out that Ginny is leaving SM, which puts a strain on their relationship. It is fixed however when Yuri calls Ginny to apologize. Their friendship strengthens upon Ginny's return to SM.

Jaejoong can come across as someone who's withdrawn and aloof, especially to those who do not know him well. After gaining his trust, however, he soon becomes someone who is very pleasant to be around, charming, sweet and very thoughtful. He can be insecure at times, leading him to be jealous of others, though he does his best to reign it in. Whenever he has a goal, he works towards it, and always has a clear sense of justice, though he ends up compromising the latter at times to reach his goals.

Jaejoong and Ginny meet when they entered as trainees at the same year, along with Dana, Yuri, and many others. While Ginny is closer to Yunho in terms of friendship, she and Jaejoong become very good friends throughout her stay as a trainee, so much so that he becomes one of those really affected when word gets out that she's thinking of leaving. Her departure puts a strain on their friendship and it takes a while for them to reconnect, which finally happens when Jaejoong finds out that Yunho, Dana and Yuri all have contact with her.

Their friendship resumes after Jaejoong reconnects with Ginny and they make an effort to see each other once in a while, though it is once more strained when Jaejoong debuts as part of DBSK. His work schedule keeps communication and visits to a bare minimum although she always makes it a point to listen and comfort him whenever he rants about how hard it is, which leads her to really hate sasaeng fans. Ginny going to college also dampens their communication, which makes them distant from each other a for a while. They see each other again after a very long time when Ginny rushes to be by Yunho's side, albeit secretly, when Yunho is nearly poisoned by a sasaeng fan. This causes Jaejoong to be a little jealous of Yunho, which makes him realize that he's in love with her. Jaejoong goes the extra mile and finds a way to give her a graduation gift when she graduates from university.

 

It is actually Jaejoong who overhears from DBSK's managers that there'll be a job opening soon and subtly informs Dana of it, which leads to Dana telling Ginny about it. Ginny returns to SM as though they have more opportunities to see each other, especially with Jaejoong making excuses to be at the SM building, problems arise when DBSK starts experiencing conflicts in 2009 and Ginny finds herself caught between Yunho and Jaejoong, which frustrates both Ginny and Jaejoong. They meet up secretly and he reveals his, Yoochun's and Junsu's plans of leaving SM for real and for good and finally tells her that he loves her before asking if she loves him too or if she's in love with Yunho. Ginny tells him she loves him and the two eventually decide on a secret relationship. 

 

The conflicts between SM and JYJ make sustaining the relationship difficult but they manage. Ginny is especially torn between her loyalty to SM and Yunho and her love for Jaejoong. She knows that if she and Jaejoong were to be exposed, it will cause a big scandal. Still, she makes it work, sneaking out to meet up with him for dates in his house or going out of her way to send him small gifts or meals to his house. Things become more difficult when Ginny becomes AEON's manager and stylist, which limits their communication and time together even more.

 

Jaejoong and Ginny are very affectionate and supportive of one another. They like holding hands and having their arms wrapped around the other. Jaejoong's very warm when he's around her and smiles a lot more while she loosens up and is more relaxed when she's around him.

CONCLUSION » Eventually, she finds the courage to tell Yunho the truth and although he's angry that she kept it from him, he says that despite the conflicts within DBSK, both she and Jaejoong matter to him a lot and wishes them well. The relationship remains private, with a few close calls with the paparazzi here and there, mostly for her sake as both she adn Jaejoong do not want her to get into trouble with the management and his fans. When Jaejoong enters the military, she promises to wait and accepts a promise ring he's bought for her.
