A Reader's Review of Chapter 7: Safety & Tears

I got a really awesome review from one of my readers, Chevy, for Chapter 7 of Not Alone, my LoveSick fanfiction about Per & Win. I want to share with you some of the things he wrote. The whole review is very long so this is just a few highlights:

“This is the soft opening to chapter that takes us from compassion and warmth to abuse and brutality.”

“The plot derives from the series, but this story has always been built on the relationship between the boys and has portrayed the deep compassion and commitment they have for ea...ch other; but pulling it together as the story heads into a fire-storm of anger and abuse is perfect. Bravo!”

“The ability of this scene to evoke a strong emotional response is testimony to the superior writing put into this story. We’re tracking the events of the series, so we know it’s coming intellectually, but it’s still so forcefully wrenching to read. By creating such a powerful bond of friendship, empathy and commitment between the boys and describing Per’s mindset in such intricate detail as the story progresses, the savagery of the father is highlighted and raised to a whole new level of repugnancy. I also thought the variation on the use of light and dark imagery in this passage was superb. Light, so often a source of neutral safety and comfort, becomes a threatening fire of anger, while darkness, typically used as a metaphor for threat and danger is employed as a mysterious calm and an escape from the evil energy of its opposite.”

“The aftermath is the most moving portion of the chapter in my estimation. We get the full-on emotional impact this event has on Per. His pain, sorrow and guilt is so heartbreaking.”

“Another great job!”

Thanks Chevy!!!
