We’re tracking the events of the series, so we know it’s coming intellectually, but it’s still so forcefully wrenching to read. By creating such a powerful bond of friendship, empathy and commitment between the boys and describing Per’s mindset in such intricate detail as the story progresses, the savagery of the father is highlighted and raised to a whole new level of repugnancy. I also thought the variation on the use of light and dark imagery in this passage was superb. Light, so often a source of neutral safety and comfort, becomes a threatening fire of anger, while darkness, typically used as a metaphor for threat and danger is employed as a mysterious calm and an escape from the evil energy of its opposite.”
