Her Little Secret (slam poetry)

A slam poem I wrote last year in my creative writing class. I performed it in front of my entire class and received a perfect score (100%) so I thought about sharing it. By the way, this poem is based on the girl I once was.

Her little secret

She hates wearing short sleeves.
No, it’s not because its winter and she feels cold.
But because they will see another one of her imperfections.
She fears they will see the scars on her arms
And they will judge her without question.
You see, people are always quick to judge.
They like to make assumptions, but never care to listen.
Because if you truly listened,
You would know a piece of her story.
You would know that every morning when she wakes up,
She sees nothing but tragedy written across the bathroom mirror
As she stares at her own reflection.
She sees nothing but flaws as her mind fills with chaos.
The scars on her body clearly visible,
Causing her to hate herself even more as if that was possible.
(Pause)
And  you may be wondering who that girl is
But she's scared to make herself known.
she knows she will only be branded with the word crazy.
She knows you wouldn't understand.
She knows you wouldn't understand.
She knows you wouldn't understand how she finds love in the blood that she bleeds.
(deep exasperated breath)
But I see her.
The truth is that I see why she says “it's hard to be me".
I see the tears in hers eyes,
The product of lies she's been told to believe that they're true.

I can see past her smiles,
I can see past her Lies.
I can see her no matter
how hard she tries to put up a fake front.
I know more about her than anyone else
But at the same time I don't.
I can see who she really is
Because she is me.
