when it comes to style, people expect her to be a tomboy. this is because she's constantly wearing leggings and sweatpants and shorts. the reason for this is more to do with being able to dance comfortably, though. when it comes to actual style preferences, she loves dressing up pretty. she loves skirts and heels and dresses and makeup - the whole nine yards. her favorite colour is light green, and she also loves hats, and is often spotted wearing one.

personality。

jangmi is a little ball of fire. her defining traits are her determination and her confidence and her quick tongue. she has many faults, as well; her ego is a bit too big, she can be self-centered at times, and her desire to be the best can be a bit all-consuming.

jangmi is an incredibly hard worker - when it comes to something she's passionate about, at least. from the time she was young, her mother always encouraged her to fight for what she wanted, and that fiery determination is definitely one of her strongest traits. she was never a hard worker when it came to grades and academics, but when it came to dancing she was willing to pull all-nighters in the practice rooms, to dance until she couldn't stand. this determination is both a good trait and a bad trait; on one hand it's made her who she is. she was born with talent, of course, but she's pushed herself and has really honed her skills over the last few years, making her quite an excellent dancer. this drive of hers also inspires others to try and push themselves that bit further. however, this determination is also a vice. she's so focused on becoming the best, on becoming number one that she can be quite hard on herself. everyone makes mistakes, but in her mind she has no room for error. especially when it comes to dance, her particular area. if she messes up singing she'll be terribly embarrassed and will practice harder, but if she messes up her choreography on stage she'll be in the dance studio until the early hours of the morning, every day for the next week, running the routine over and over again until she has it perfect, almost uncaring of the strain on her body. this attitude is also projected on those around her; as main dancer it's her job to make sure the girls look good dancing. she pushes them, too - which isn't always a bad thing - but sometimes she can be a little overbearing, sometimes she becomes so caught up she can snap at the people she cares about. sometimes, she needs someone to say firmly 'shut the hell up, we're taking a break' or 'go home and rest, i don't care how much you need to practice.'

this determination stems from her ambition to be the best. her ego is a little too big for her own good, and she's very ambitious. she also has a self-centered streak when it comes to it; as much as she wants her group and her girls to succeed, she also wants to succeed herself, she wants to stand out. as a result she's very competitive. although she's hard on herself when she messes up, 90% of the time she has a confident aura about her. she knows she's good. she knows that her girls are good. sometimes, a little faith is needed, y'know? sometimes, in the nervewracking moments, her presence can almost be a little calming. in the moments before a performance when some of the others are dealing with nerves, she's the one who slips her hand into another's, or who squeezes someone's shoulder or pulls them into a one-armed hug with the reassurance; it'll be fine. we've worked hard. we can do this.

jangmi can be a bit sharp with others, but most of the time she doesn't mean it. she has a quick tongue, which usually is used in good humor; her sarcastic quips usually poke harmless fun at the people around her. however she doesn't always realize that she can be hurting someones feelings - she's a bit oblivious like that - and it can take her a long time to realize what she's done and apologize. her humor is one of her quirks, and she often charms people with it, too. sometimes she doesn't quite respect her seniors, sometimes she's a bit rude and sometimes her words can be a bit hurtful, but once she realizes that she's in the wrong, she will nearly always apologize. she may not seem like it, but she cares for her friends. sure, she's no "big sister" type, but she hates seeing people hurt. she's a bit awkward when it comes to apologizing, but she does her best.

all in all, jangmi means well, but sometimes she's a bit too rough around the edges. she's never been great with words, either; she tends to communicate through more physical means. her apologies are stuttered and awkward but she'll say more by the way she hugs and squeezes your hand in apology. when someones upset or nervous she'll say a few encouraging things, but the most comforting thing will be the little gestures she makes. she's not the best to go to for advice, but if you want an honest opinion or someone to rant to, she's a good one to go to. and if you hurt someone she cares about - watch it. seriously. she holds grudges. under the firey exterior, she can be quite a loving person...but it definitely takes a while to get used to her.

background。

jangmi grew up with her mother. her father was never in the picture and she was an only child, so it was just her and her mother. she was always okay with that, though, it never really bothered her. from the time she was young her mother always encouraged her to do her best. she never really applied this in school as a child, though. when she was seven years old, she started ballet lessons - and suddenly everything changed. she would spend minimum time on her homework - but then would spend hours practicing. she loved ballet - she loved to dance - when she moved everything felt just right. when she was a bit older she wanted to try other styles. when she was ten she started hiphop classes, and took to that with even more fire than she did to ballet. in between dance practice and school she'd be in her room, blaring pop music and dancing the routines to the latest super junior and wonder girls songs. even at this age, she knew she wanted to be a dancer.

at age twelve she entered an international competition and won the prize of a lifetime; a scholarship to attend a prestigious dance academy - in new york, america. she was still young, and moving away to somewhere like america was incredibly scary, but she swallowed her fears and went anyway. it was a hard change; between culture shock and missing her mom, but she learned to love it. the complete change of peers and friends made her into the social person she is today. competition at this dance academy was tight, and that was also where her fiery determination was born. in new york she studied ballet and hiphop, as well as branching out into other styles, constantly expanding her repetoire and honing her skills. this academy also taught other performing arts; she tried her hand at both acting and singing. acting wasn't for her, and that became apparent very quickly. however, she didn't have a bad voice. she had a few singing lessons but she dropped them after a few weeks, wanting to focus on dance.

the other benefit from being in america for two years was...well. the united states is no utopia by any stretch of the imagination, but society there is slightly more open about some topics compared to back home. namely, homouality. at home it was a taboo subject, something to be laughed about and used as an insult. and when jangmi left south korea, she was young enough that she didn't really think about crushes and boys too much. but after those two years, she knew that she wasn't like many of the other girls she knew. when they talked about crushes, she always thought of girls, not boys. at that age she didn't quite realize that she was gay. no, that came later. and she was suddenly very glad of her two years in america; being a lesbian was still such a taboo here, but at least she had spent time in a place where it wasn't so hushed over, where some people were actually quite open about her uality. still, she kept quiet about it, told barely anyone; if this got out, she wouldn't ever get her career started, and she wasn't going to let her years of training go to waste. besides - she wasn't likely to have time to date as a trainee. so jangmi zipped , and when anyone asked her about boys that she liked she would shrug, and say 'i'm too busy training to have time for them.'

when she was fourteen, jangmi returned to south korea and her dream to become a dancer was even more firmly cemented into her brain. the following summer, at age fifteen, she auditioned for jyp entertainment.

dislikes

  • slurs
  • heights. she has a fear of heights but she'd never admit it
  • bugs - especially spiders!
  • car rides
  • cold weather

habits

  • jangmi is definitely one for physical affection, she's quite touchy-feely. she often drapes an arm over her friends' shoulders or links arms when walking together
  • she bites her nails, even though she's trying to break the habit. there's nothing worse than ruining manicured nails by nail biting, but she can't help it!
  • she bites her lip when she's nervous. this doesn't happen very often, but it's a sign of discomfort. it usually happens when she's on a height or when someone makes a boderline-homophobic joke
  • she drums the fingers of her right hand on her left arm when she's restless or bored
  • she always winks in selfies. literally always

hobbies

  • running. she tries to run once a day, if she can. she finds that running is a great way to keep your figure, aside from all the dancing! she finds it relaxing, too.
  • listening to music. jangmi has a wide range of musical interests, from k-pop to punk rock. she'll listen to anything, and will give anything a try
  • yoga. she tries to start and end her days with doing some yoga. it's a good way to unwind before bed and to wake up in the morning, and it helps with her flexibility

other:

  • jangmi has never had a boyfriend (for obvious reasons) but she's never had a girlfriend either. she has kissed girls before, but that's as far as her experience goes
  • she's quite flexible
  • she would love to learn how to play an instrument but she doesn't think she'll have time in the near future
  • in training she tried to learn how to rap, but she could never get the hang of it
  • her celebrity crush is kim hyoyeon from girls generation
  • the competition she entered when she was younger was an international competition. you had to send in a video of a performance and then audition - a few weeks after the audition the hopefuls learned whether they had won the two year scholarship or not. two others from south korea also went but they weren't the same age as jangmi so she didn't see much of them.
  • she has trained in many different dance styles, but she specializes in hiphop and ballet. hiphop is her favorite and is more her style, firey and powerful, but she loves to surprise people when she puts on a slower beat and slips into the graceful and elegant moves she knows for ballet.
  • jangmi is a very open person and doesn't hide much. the only thing she considers a "secret" is her uality. she's not ashamed of being gay, no. but it still is...frowned upon, to say the least, and if she was open about it she would sabotage her own chances of debuting. she doesn't want to let years of toil go to waste, so on this particular matter, she keeps shut.

family。

choi jeonmi / mother / 42 / journalist / jangmi and her mother are very close. jangmi never knew her father, but this didn't have a huge effect on her life. she was an only child, so growing up it was just her and her mom. she sometimes got teased for this, but she didn't care. her mom was her role model, her number one fan, her best friend all in one. she never stopped encouraging jangmi to follow her dreams, even if becoming a dancer wasn't an ideal career. of course, they have their fights - jangmi definitely inherited her fire from her mother - but they always stick together. one of the hardest things about training in america for two years, and then moving to seoul to become a trainee was that it meant she had less time to spend with her mom. she still texts her every day, talks to her every other night, skypes her when she has time and sees her when she can, but it's hard. jeonmi is an intelligent, independant woman, strong and capable, able to manage being a single mother and juggling a career in newspaper journalism at the same time.
others。

maggie lau / best friend / 19 / student / maggie is an american-taiwanese girl who jangmi met during her two years in new york. like jangmi, she was an aspiring dancer who managed to make it into this prestigous dance academy. from the first day they banded together. they didn't know each other, but they were both young asian girls starting in a predominantly white dance academy. unlike jangmi, maggie had fluent english, and sort-of took jangmi under her wing. they shared a passion for dance, and formed a lasting, close friendship over their two years together. maggie lived in new york and Jangmi came home after her two year scholarship, but even so; they maintained a close bond despite living on opposite ends of the world. like all friends they bicker and argue, but they also confide in each other. maggie is the only one of jangmi's friends who knows she's a lesbian. it's hard finding time to speak to each other with the time differences, but they make it work, and chat when they can. maggie still helps jangmi with her english, as nowadays jangmi only really speaks english while talking to her. maggie is a chatterbox, open and friendly and social.

jeon jungkook / friend / 18 / idol (bts) / jangmi spent a few years training at jyp entertainment. a lot of her training involved dance, so she ran into jungkook - who was training for bighit, a subsidary of jyp - several times. they were very close in age, and they both were dancers, so a friendship formed. they don't see each other much, not since jangmi left jyp and since jungkook debuted, but they still are quite friendly with each other and catch up when they can. they were quite different when they met; jungkook used to be quite shy and timid, but over the years he's opened up, and he's quite funny and outgoing now. they tease each other a lot.

trainee life。
for jangmi, like for everyone, trainee life was tough. trying to break through into the idol world with dancing meant pulling all nighters, practicing in the studio, it meant sacrificing sweat, blood, tears and time to try and push yourself into becoming the best you can be. jangmi was able for it, because she was naturally very determined and hard working. not everybody was the same, and many dropped out but she didn't. she couldn't. she spent a lot of time on vocal lessons, too; she had a good voice, the voice of a lead vocal, they said; but she was untrained. that was even harder, for her. she was also given rap lessons, but she never got rap. she could feel rhythm in her body, she could dance to any rhythm or melody she heard, but she didn't have the flow or skill of a rapper. after a year at jyp and having gotten nowhere, jangmi thought she should try somewhere else. jyp was successful, but it meant there were so many trainees, all with the same goal. when she heard of aida, a new company, she thought she would have a better chance, so she auditioned and then left jyp.

love interest。jeon ahreum
occupation。idol
personality。
optimistic, loud, oblivious, easily excited
history。
the first time jangmi saw ahreum, she thought that she must have died and gone to heaven, or something, because damn if that wasn't an angel right in front of her. for all of jangmi's cool confidence and fire and edginess, this sweet girl-next-door beauty stopped her in her tracks. it was like she was a part of some cliche kdrama, or something. when she learned she was a rapper, her respect grew - after all, rap had been one of the areas she never could master. when she learned that she was going to be training alongside this beauty, she was quite nervous - what if her attraction showed? but she managed to stay normal around her, even as she spent more time with her and began to really enjoy her company.
interactions。
well, as trainees they saw each other almost every other day. jangmi used to grow tense when she came into the room, but she's long since gotten used to her. now, they're friends, and jangmi loves ahreum's optimism and excitement. she's drawn to her, and always enjoys spending time with her. she doesn't want to seem to obvious, though. when she thinks about this too much she can become tense around the other girl, but there's something about ahreum that puts her at ease, and she usually forgets about any tension or worries around her. they've been training together for god knows how long, and like with the other girls; they've seen each other at their best and their worst. but despite the meaningless everyday conflicts that arise when you spend all your time with someone, despite all the time you spend together - jangmi hasn't grown any less fond of the girl.
status.
it's not exactly like jangmi can confess, right? she likes ahreum. like, really likes her. but she doesn't even know if ahreum likes girls! in any case, confessing could things up. she has no idea how the other girls would react to her coming out - honestly, she thinks that they're close enough that they would be okay with it, but you never know. she doesn't want to risk anything, and she doesn't want to risk making ahreum uncomfortable and ruining their friendship, so at the moment she's content just to stay friends. (that said: if anyone ever hurts ahreum they will have jangmi to deal with. the protective streak runs strong). although she'd obviously love something more, she's okay with her feelings remaining unrequited.
