» PERSONALITY

Traits: Confident, Honest, Fierce, Unapologetic, Stupid, Hilarious, Confused, Closed, Defensive, Secretive

Sunhwi has learned to present herself as a strong young woman who is very confident with herself. She believes she is very beautiful and while she doesn't think she's the most skilled in many aspects of life, she believes that she excels above most people. When she walks into a room, she has an aura that commands attention, suggests competition, and can sometimes introduce intimidation. Overall, in most situations, she has a unique ferocity to her that spells out determination and passion. Carrying herself in this way is a tool that she's learned to hone and harness to protect herself from people who are prone to judge and criticise her. It also keeps people at least an arm's distance away from her so they'll never get close enough to learn too much about her. When she's giving off this aura, she tends to be unrelenting and unapologetic in order to make things go her way, even if she's wrong.

However, behind that facade is a bemused young woman still struggling with her sense of identity. Admittedly, her outward appearance is the result of a "fake it until you make it" attitude. Beneath all the fierceness, Sunhwi is a sweet person mostly concerned with finding people she can relate to and accept as much as they accept her. When she's with people she feels comfortable with, she attempts to be very tender and empathetic as she understands the struggles of being different, but even though her intentions are good, she has trouble communicating with them due to cultural differences.

Her background has made it difficult for her to act appropriately in a lot of situations while in South Korea. Sometimes, she may come off as impolite or too direct. In order to deal with those issues, Sunhwi has dumbed herself down. Even though it conflicts with the confident personality she tries to present, she finds herself playing the clueless, clumsy, and stupid foreigner card way too often. She has been able to get through a lot of things by acting as a comedian at her own expense. Sometimes she's sarcastic, but most of the time she's self deprecating. Some would call her a variety show genius, but really she's playing the group idiot to stay out of trouble. While it's tiring for her to pretend to be as stupid as she portrays, her balancing act between being a ferociously charismatic performer and a ridiculously exotic idiot has caused her fans to fall in love with her. She hates acting like a fool, but it seems like it's a requirement she must keep to keep her job, her group, and SM happy.

» Background

Now there's no denying that Sunhwi is sometimes, as she bluntly puts it,  "too American to function." It also isn't a secret that she was raised in San Francisco, California, but despite her loud and honest personality, she isn't a complete open book.  Sunhwi's biggest secret is that she was adopted from South Korea and raised in a non-Korean, non-Asian, German-American family. The name they gave her was Katherine Beyersdorf and they called her Katie for short. She had two older sisters, named Nina and Simone, a mother, and two fathers. That's right, two! Sunhwi can't remember when it happened, but during her upbringing, the father that was involved in her adoption came out of the closet. Because of the loving nature of her family, they took the news well and surprisingly, her mother and sisters allowed their father to date men. At the time, Sunhwi was three and too young to have a real say in things, but her father's long time male partner was a lovely addition to her family.

Needless to say, growing up surrounded by a family like hers was strange, but not as uncomfortable as some would think. Her mother worked in real state, specializing in house flipping, her adoptive father owned a company of conservators, and her father's partner was in a moderately successful Jazz & Blues band. Money was never an issue and because she was the youngest and the most different out of the bunch everyone doted on her. Sunhwi was used to getting what she wanted when she wanted it, but she grew out of a rotten and spoiled personality when she entered primary school. She will always remember the look of confusion on her Kindergarten teacher's face when she raised her hand after hearing, "Katherine Beyersdorf." As if the confusion wasn't damaging enough, the teacher followed up with a clear, "Oh sweetie, where are you from?"

At first, the question really didn't bother her much, but throughout her first day of kindergarten, her peers and other teachers repeated it to her constantly. Eventually, as a five year old, Sunhwi got overwhelmed and started to cry. Her school day ended early with her mother being called to pick her up because she wouldn't stop crying. They were in the car when she asked her mother why they wouldn't stop asking her the same question and during the car ride, her mother explained that she was adopted. For little Sunhwi, it was shocking and heartbreaking that she wasn't really like her family. She had always thought that she looked a little funny when she compared herself to them, but she didn't know that she was a completely different ethnicity.

In the following months, it became quite evident to her family that her revelation had affected her negatively. Sunhwi hated herself for being Korean.  They weren't sure what to do at first, but eventually they agreed that Sunhwi should learn about her heritage so she doesn't feel that it was wrong to be Korean. The Beyersdorfs quickly enrolled her in educational classes and cultural workshops at San Francisco's Korean Center.  They also went so far as to hire the best Korean Language tutor they could find. The classes and tutoring continued into the beginning of high school years and she begrudgingly went to all of them.

It wasn't until her high school years that she learned to really love and accept who she was. After her predominantly white group of primary school friends went in different directions, she was forced to make new ones. At the persuation of her family and an agreement (no more Korean Language tutoring and cultural classes), she joined her high school's Korean club in her freshman year. However, resistant to her own ethnicity, Sunhwi often skipped Korean club meetings to participate in dance club practices. There, she made her first friend in highschool, who, coincidentally, was also apart of the Korean club. As a result, Sunhwi found herself going to the club more often than not, and despite her name, they openly accepted her into their circle.

Sunhwi's involvement with both clubs continued well into her senior year and it was due to her involvement with the clubs that she decided to change her name. During her senior year, her dance club decided to participate in a dance competition held at Los Angeles, California. While discussing the details of the event with her team, Sunhwi came to the decision that she didn't want the MCs to announce her as "Katherine Beyersdorf." She felt that people would become too confused and too distracted to pay attention to their dance if they saw an Asian girl with a white name, so with her not so amazing background knowledge of her culture, she picked something that sounded remotely Korean and ran with it. She brought up her wish to change her name with her family and they said that they were fine with the idea. They supplied her with a last name (she didn't find out until later that the name they gave her was her real surname) and she picked her first name. Then they went to legally change her name.

She ended up going to that competition as a Miss Sunhwi Lim. It was simple, easy to pronounce, and she liked it a lot more than Beyersdorf, no offense to her family. However, despite the trouble of going to change her name, her dance team placed sixth overall in the competition. As she was leaving the competition in defeat, she bumped into an SM recruiter who was impressed by her developing dance skills. He managed to to inform her about SM auditions and suggested that she take the opportunity. It sounded too good to be true to her so she politely declined, but as she turned to leave, one of her team mates, who had been eavesdropping, grabbed hold of her and accepted on her behalf. Her team mate then proceeded to tell her older sisters about what had happened and they proceeded to tell their parents. Of course, her loving family showered her with an overwhelming amount of support, so eventually she reluctantly learned a few popular korean songs from google and went to the audition.

To this day, Sunhwi isn't sure what they saw in her, but regardless, she passed her auditions and she became a trainee for SM Entertainment. Her trainee period was no walk in the park. Despite all the time she spent learning about South Korea, actually being there was different and she went through a severe culture shock. Her teachers yelled at her all the time, the other trainees didn't like her very much, and unsurprisingly, people thought her name was strange. Also, it took her a long time to get used to Korean food. When they put her on a diet upon her arrival in South Korea, she lost a lot of weight because she was a picky eater. Training in a foreign place was very hard for her. There were many times when wanted to quit. When ever she could, she would call her parents and compain to them about her experiences in German, so the other trainees wouldn't know about what she was saying. Despite all the hardships, however, she found refuge with one of her rap instructors whenever she couldn't contact her parents. He was tough on her and was brutally honest but he was also more understanding than the rest of the people surrounding her. Because of how understanding he tried to be with her, Sunhwi enjoyed going to her rap lessons and learned to excell in them.

Eventually, all her blood, sweat, and tears paid off and she was put into a project group being prepared to debut. Like before, Sunhwi still wasn't sure of what anyone saw in her, but it was certain that all the hardship that SM's training program put her through had tamed her for the most part. Even though, Sunhwi still has held on to a lot of her "American-ness," she's more than willing to become what SM needs her to be.

what is love
we spend our lives searching for it
» the basics
UALITY: Panual with a high libido
LOVE INTEREST: Kris
BACKUP: No one, or whomever you'd like. A love story doesn't define her and I don't mind if you don't write about her and Kris.
» PERSONALITY

Traits: Cold, withdrawn, quiet, enigmatic, resourceful, crafty, anxious

Sunhwi didn't get stuck with a passionate lover who tends to her every need. While her love interest has his passionate moments, he is quiet, withdrawn, and generally enigmatic with her. He portrays himself as a confident man who has unique quips that attract his fans and admittedly, it was his stage persona that attracted Sunhwi to him.  Underneath all the charisma and his strong sense of his ability, he is self centered and more interested in his own devices than anything else. He's a determined worker used to being the lone wolf and getting everything done on his own terms. He holds high expectations for everyone because he says he cares, but in reality he's the type to coldly act disappointed with it all. Kris has two faces and he's mastered the skill on putting on a mask for show business.

When around people he cares about he is protective and is reasonable. These two qualities are some of the reasons why he was a former boy band leader. He understands what needs to be done to make things work and he'll skillfully maneuver around obstacles to acomplish his goals. He's crafty and resourceful. Whether or not people believe how he acted before was genuine, Kris still keeps to himself to make his experiences more simple. At this point in his life, he's more focused on self-care and getting himself to a more emotionally stable state.

» INTERACTIONS

She met him before she labeled him as callous. Even though relationships of any sort outside of friendship were discouraged and banned during their trainee years, Sunhwi and Kris were hormonal teenagers who seemed to understand how it felt to be different. Their oddities and uniqueness attracted them to each other. After some light flirtation, the two somehow found themselves in a broom closet attempting to get intimate. During these years, they never dated or became an official couple. They clearly defined themsevles as friends with benefits. When he debutted before her, Sunhwi became even more entranced by him. She admired how he could speak with ease and he was very charming, but in retrospect, she realized that she was just a fangirl in heat. If someone asked her now, she'd be very upset with herself for being that way.

Because he debutted and was busy, Sunhwi distanced herself from him, but despite her efforts, if he needed a quickie and way to unwind, he would come to her and she would gladly accept. They were casual lovers who used each other to get rid of pent up frustrations, but they weren't serious about staying together so she would let them go. If he visited her to talk about a new girl he was dating, she was never upset and he was the same way.

However, after he left SM Entertainment, things changed for her. The openess that they shared with each other before the Exo fallout disappeared and the friendship she was used to was gone. Kris would still occasionally visit her, but their time together was devoid of essential emotions during the intimacy. While she appreciated their acts together, she realized she missed how they were before. She wanted to feel the tenderness they had together once again. Sunhwi, currently, doesn't know where to place her emotions. She's not sure if she's fallen for him or with an idea of him. Regardless of what has happened, Sunhwi is looking for a way to move on from whatever it is that she has or has had with Kris.
