Buying upvotes ain't the norm folks (or am I living in a cave and this is what has become of AFF?)

I read conchobar/peachysoo 's blog early in the morning when my mind was kinda fuzzy. But I'm sober now that it's 7:30 in the evening.

LISTEN, just because the featured author did it, it doesn't mean that it's how things work here in AFF. We don't buy upvotes. WHA- Guys, this is not the norm.

Ah perhaps you've seen election candidates buy votes but it doesn't change the fact that vote buying is illegal. In Khan Academy, if  you were caught in a bidding ring ("I vote your program, you vote mine"), you'd be banned. The penalty is worse than plagiarism. When you plagiarize, your program just won't show up.

Oh maybe, it's those beauty contests where the contestant with the most number of tickets sold wins. But that's not part of the mechanics here in AFF.

In order for your fic to get featured, you have to earn the highest number of upvotes in a certain period of time (how many days? three?).

Sure, we are allowed to purchase karma points to buy layouts in the Layout Marketplace, to advertise via AFF's bidding system, to change our usernames, etc.

But nowhere in the FAQ does it state that karma points could be used to buy upvotes. Why? Because upvotes are meant to be freely given by the readers. It is their way of saying that they like your story enough to get it in the frontpage.

Now, if you buy upvotes for your story... and it got featured... what does it say about you or your story?

It's like the case of that one featured user who created dummy accounts just to get featured. That was during the time when the number of subscribers is one of the criteria for getting featured. That user was banned.

Or that featured user who put "click me" link baits which is actually the upvote button in disguise. (DON'T EVEN TRY. Besides, it doesn't work anymore.)

Or that featured user who transferred her fic to one of her accounts just so the six-month feature ban won't apply.

Now this.

It's 2015 and I shouldn't be blogging about something we know without another person telling us. For sure, your teachers and parents have told you time and time again, not to cheat. Why? When you cheat, you only cheat yourselves.

Sure, you got a high score in the test, but did you learn anything?

You got featured, but do you honestly feel you deserved it?

This is just sad. I am not bothered because I want to be featured. I've stayed far too long in this site to realize that there are more important things than a star in your fic.

But the fact that users would think that vote buying is the norm is frustrating. Yes, they may enjoy temporary fame but they won't succeed in life if they always cheat their way to everything.

And then there are those users who dream of getting featured, who deserve getting featured. (Just because it's not my goal, doesn't mean I would callously put them down. I do believe that there are authors out there who deserve that spot in the front page.)

And guys, you are not required to upvote a story just because the author tells you to. No. Even if he/she threatens you that he/she wouldn't update. You're better off not reading the story if the user's motivation of writing is the number of upvotes.

ANYWAY, that's just me and my attempt not to bring further headache to our mods and admin.

Let's play nice, kay?

so that's why some... plain stories... have been occupying the featured page. I visited a few of those fics and the authors were so stubborn, saying they felt offended for the backlash they received and stuffs.. ofc it hurts when someone bash you but srsly? well, some of the fics are good enough but some are just... ugh. I know there are people who love their stories but didn't new readers mostly come only after their story appeared on the front page? still, they bought the upvotes and subs first. that's basically the shortest shortcut to gain attention. there are ad shops and the bidding, but they went for the upvote shops instead. are you here to share your stories or to be celebrities? if your story's good enough, shouldn't you just stay put and let it be? if it's good, people will genuinely pay attention to it. readers know what's good and they can choose what to read .-. the number of subs, views, and upvotes surely mean a lot for the authors. but imho, these numbers are appreciation for the writers, given by the readers, not something artificial that can be forced or falsified .-. doesn't buying votes mean faking the number on their story page? they might be a good author with supportive readers but that's still cheating. it's sad that when people are trying to point it out to them nicely, these kind reminders get called haters. like duh, ain't got no time to be jealous of your story if we can write our own story as well.

ugh. I'm not sure why I'm frustrated, maybe I'm just a salty person, but today's fanfic was another one of those upvote bought featured ones. the ratio is insane! like seriously?! and I can't help but notice the author is surprised she got featured. And of course those upvote shops in the credit. ;___; haaa.
and of course the ratio of upvotes, subscribers and comments don't make sense.

If it were me, I would never use karma for that because well, it would lower myself in my eyes and it would make me feel guilty... (I still remember how I couldn't sleep all night when I voted my own story - quickly got up the next day to just cancel it and yeah, it just didn't feel right lmao. I feel like slapping myself whenever I remember that--that just made me seem so desperate.) I still can't believe people use all these cheap method to get there stories featured, I mean, what's so special about getting a star on your story. I do admit at first I liked the thought of it but now, seeing what kind of fics are getting featured (half of them aren't even up to the mark) it's... well, I would never want to add my story on that list. It's just the way I think lol.

I miss the old AFF tbh. That time when we had one story a week and they used to be good. Now it's all about popular groups and seeing the number of upvotes... I've stopped going through the list of featured fics tbh.

Tbh, the worse is when a user uses their own store to promote their own fanfic.
I'm not going to lie and say that I didn't subscribe to those shops but I have unsubscribed them, simply because it just isn't fair to so such thing.
And like now the fanfics (except some of course) that are getting featured aren't even good! Some are just plain out creepy with their weird titles xD

most of the stories that get featured as of now we're somehow promoted in ad shops or upvote shops. there's like a while list of the credits in their foreword. I think there was one story that was featured recently called ffff u fuuuuu or something like that, but the author disabled her account? was it due to that reason. I'm glad that there are some stories that actually get featured and are really good. I don't want to name any names, but illusory the one that is on the page now was beautifully written and didn't need any upvote help or subscriber help. there's still a but of hope left for the featured section, but as of now I hope some good stories do get their time to shine.
