40Questions for Writers

I was tagged on twitter to do this soooo if you're reading this right now and you write fics then I officially tag you to answer these questions!

Describe your comfort zone—a “typical you” fic.

Honestly I'm not very sure, but I just looked back on my fics and I think my comfort zone is mostly angst fics with more of a fantasy/supernatural edge to it? Realistic life fics are just too...normal I guess and I like writing more dysfunctional types of relationships. yikes.

Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?

I really really want to try arranged marriage or even just a regular old high school nerd/jock kind of trope. But I feel like I wouldn't be able to make it interesting and realisitic.

Is there a trope you wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole?

A full on love triangle for sure. I literally hate writing love triangles so much, specifically the ones where two people fight over one person and I try to keep that to a minimum. Or Unnecessarily y to Main Girl Queen Bee Character.

How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now?  Care to share one of them?

A lot, oh my god I am the Queen of WIPs probably. I'm writing a very long 2nd part to the Kyungsoo/OC fic right now (not to mention the 2 ongoing stories I still have). I'm writing for hpexo.

I have a Chen/Lay pokemon au in the works (even though I haven't even FINISHED the x-men au, please someone just yell at me). And I'm actually thinking of an OC/(Baekhyun or Minseok or someone idk yet) ninja thing so. They're all barely planned ideas unfortunately.

Share one of your strengths.

I think I'm good at invoking emotion? Or at least I like to write in a pretty flowery way because I want the reader to imagine the scene exacty the way I'm imagining it. I see things in a cinematic way and that's why I have so many scene breaks and I want the reader to feel just as upset as my character does, just as scared, just as excited, and I think I'm good at detailing those feelings.

Share one of your weaknesses.

I feel like I let myself get carried away in my descriptions and flowery writing and sometimes succinct is best, isn't it? Also I'm awful at planning out stories fully once I begin and I'm inconsistent in my writing schedule, which I think doesn't help my writing improve as much as I want it to.

Share a snippet from one of your favorite pieces of prose you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

Others (specifically unruly haired, bespectacled others) might scoff at her majesty’s hesitant words, although a certain understanding will pass through those hidden eyes. A certain bespectacled boy will learn that sometimes love is not quite enough and if one were to pass through the Great Hall and head towards the South Wing, one might have witnessed a quiet scene.

Just beside the vintage glass window overlooking the southern grounds of campus, one could catch a glimpse of a boy and a girl; arms close but far away, a small barrier slowly forming between them with each passing minute. The voices would have been low, almost fragile in tone, as if whatever they had could shatter at any moment.

It didn’t quite shatter, no; it cracked, tearing apart slowly and so, so carefully. It wasn’t a clean break. She dropped her head onto his shoulder, a curtain of red falling over his back, and he didn’t dare move a single muscle. They sat like that for what seemed like years until too late bordered on too early.

I love you is what he would have said if this situation had actually occurred.

And, hypothetically of course, she should have said I love you, too.

But duty calls and all she could say was I’m sorry.

this is from the walls have ears (a hp james/lily fic) and I just really enjoyed writing the fic in such a different pov then I'm used to. I like a lot of prose from some of salt skin's chapters and sitting on a throne as well tbh.

Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

“It’s a long journey to get to him.”

Baekhyun crosses his arms, eyeing Jongdae with irritation. “Yeah, a journey I could have started nearly thirty days ago. Thanks for that, by the way.”

“I’m a busy man, okay.”

“Doing what? You’re a ing tree man.”

Dryad.”

“Whatever.” Baekhyun stands up, brushing his pants off. He picks up a branch. “Let’s go on this perilous, long adventure, then. Let's find your tree boss.”

OR

“I thought this wasn’t supposed to be perilous!” Baekhyun hisses between deep gulps of air, forcefully trying to keep his voice down as they weave through passage after passage, not even bothering to make sure they know where they’re going.

“I don’t even know what perilous means.” Jongdae gasps out, as he pulls Baekhyun to the left, into a small nook in the wall. Baekhyun shoots Jongdae the dirtiest look but Jongdae has no time to respond. He’d like to live, thank you very much.

Both from your way home, btw. But BaekChen is always the most fun when it comes to fun to write dialogue, honestly.

Which fic has been the hardest to write?

Salt Skin because of how plot heavy it is, especially regarding the hidden stuff. Or possibly Burn It Down just because I'm trying to write the OC's personality as out of my comfort zone as possible. The second half of Good Girls was hard in an emotionally taxing kind of way because I grow easily attached to things (I'm a BIG  BA B Y).

But by far, the fic I am most attached to was Elastic Heart and I put my heart and soul into that fic so it's very, very important to me and it was hard to post it because a lot of the themes are reminiscent to how I feel about a lot of things. It just made me feel a lot while writing it.

Which fic has been the easiest to write?

Definitely all the time in the world. The fic just flowed out of me and I spent a good two days on it. It was strangely easy to write. Another one is sitting on a throne (while they're buried in the dirt) which is awful because it's full of so many awful character deaths. But I wrote it in 5 hours and it was wildly easy to write too.

Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?

I think it's both? I've thought about writing a book before but I am so terribly inconsistent, especially with deadlines and set schedules, that I think it'd never work out. I've wanted to turn writing into a screenwriting passion and that's still on the table. But I write to relieve stress and it's fun and I never want to turn it into a chore, so I think it is more of a hobby than anything else.

Is there an episode above all others that inspires you just a little bit more?

I don't know what this is  a s king.

What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever come across?

my favorite quote is: "Writers don't write from experience, although many are hesitant to admit that they don't...If you wrote from experience, you'd get maybe on book, maybe three poems. Writers write from empathy." - Nikki Giovani

What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?

The worst writing advice, for me, would be to cut own on commas (i LOVE COMMAS) and probably to always sit down and fully plot/outline stories. I find it restrictive and it actually makes me lose interest in what I'm writing because of the rigid structure of it.

If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?

Sometimes I think sitting on a throne would be cool to watch, just because the transitions from each POV was very fun for me to put together. But I think it'd have to be either Good Girls (I'd love to see exo in a mafia movies wow) or Salt Skin.

If you could only write one pairing for the rest of your life, which pairing would it be?

I'm already doing it with James Potter/Lily Evans. But that or BaekChen because they're fun!! Anyone with Baekhyun tbh.

Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

Definitely from start to finish, though I do plan out scenes out of order and note it down.

Do you use any tools, like worksheets or outlines?

No, not really. i just keep a list of characteristics for the main characters (fatal flaws, likes/dislikes, etc) and I make lists of events I'd like to have in a fic on google docs so I can access it from my phone as well as my computer. I think of ideas in the middle of the night before bed/early morning when I'm heading to class and stuff so I jot it down before moving on tbh.

Stephen King once said that his muse is a man who lives in the basement.  Do you have a muse?

I think k-pop idols, specifically Baekhyun and sometimes Chen are my muses tbh....But I also draw inspiration from a lot of the music I listen to (lyrically or instrumentally) and any kind of visual that I come across on the internet.

Describe your perfect writing conditions.

omg cool weather, lying on my bed in general quiet (or even sitting in the library) while listening loudly to movie scores or just really slow songs without too many lyrics. I don't like to be able to hear the lyrics all the time bc it's distracting. A

How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?

I'm dumb and every time I open the document, I reread it and accidentally edit what I've already written before just spweing out words and closing the document without rereading. So when I post it, usually the first half of the chapter is nicely editted, but the second half has missing words and ? But then I go back a couple hours later and reread after its posted and edit it a bit more.

Choose a passage from one of your earlier fics and edit it into your current writing style

I don't think my writing style has changed so no thanks, and also I don't want to reread it oh god.

If you were to revise one of your older fics from start to finish, which would it be and why?

Definitely Experience, because I feel like it's incredibly cliche and it was my first fic on this site and it just makes me :/// when I reread it!!

Have you ever deleted one of your published fics?

Nope

What do you look for in a beta?

I've never had a beta, actually. I run on a weird schedule so I don't want to subject someone else to that lmao.

Do you beta yourself?  If so, what kind of beta are you?

Yeah I mostly proofread/edit all my stuff. I think I'm generally an ok beta at picking up typos/missing words, but I could do better haha

How do you feel about collaborations?

I'd LOVE it.

Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

emchan -  I love love love her prose and she has a perfect mix of angst and fluff and comedy that I am so envious of. I couldn't stop laughing at the office fic and pink lemonade is the cutest thing i've ever read, and I love the description of the scene oh my god.

taelighted - her story ideas are incredible and she writes beautifully, like I laughed so loudly during running with wolves but the part that really, really stood out for me was when kris found out about dal's scars, and just there's a lot of subtle feelings. I cried during her taemin/oc story tbh.

inkin-brushes - they write mostly but it's SO GOOD. The worldbuilding?? and the ??? and the relationships are so so so good

If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?

I don't remember the name of the fic but it's a Baekhyun vampire fic where he's lost his humanity and the OC is blood-bonded to him even though he meant to kill her and it's....so good....like I remember it wasn't incredibly well-written but it was written in such a simple way that it serious ed me up and I think about it a lot.

Do you accept prompts?

I do, but I don't fulfill every prompt request, just whichever sounds really interesting to me.

Do you take liberties with canon or are you very strict about your fic being canon compliant?

I love alternate universes, so I'm not canon compliant in that sense, but I only make sure to write characters/kpop idols whose personalities I understand well because I don't like to deviate from their personalities.

How do you feel about ?

I don't care what other people write. It'd difficult for me to write , so I usually only have one or two chapters of it.

How do you feel about crack?

I love it!! But there are a select few people who can do it right without making me cringe. (I can't write crack to save a life rip).

What are your thoughts on non-con and dub-con.

I don't like non-con at all...I only like it if it's dealt with correctly but it's not hot or cute when the fic has non-con or dub-con and the author is painting it as romantic or desirable in anyway.

Would you ever kill off a canon character?

Yes, I spent a whole fic killing every canon character once hahaaa

Which is your favorite site to post fics?

AFF. Tumblr is easier for drabbles, LJ is nice and it's been a recent discovery of mine.

Talk about your current WIPs.

Salt Skin: I have the ending completely plotted and I'm so excited to get it done and out there but I'm lost on how to get from where we are currently to the end because I have bits and pieces planned but not the whole thing and it's frustrating. Also the tiny details are making me STRESSED and I'm always itching to write Salt Skin but nothing has been coming out right lately. :(( But it's getting there and I'm super happy with how far it's going.

Grand Piano: THE WORDS ARE NOT COMING OUT RIGHT. But I love writing this a lot and I'm actually enjoying myself a lot haha. I'm probably a lil sadistic tbh....

Burn It Down: Why is Jihye so hard to write? I'm breaking out of my comfort zone and it's the worst thing, but I really love how it's going so maybe it's not too bad. Also I've started to notice how cute Chen is :3

EXO Naruto AU: THIS IS JUST....A MESS BUT A ////GOOD//// MESS.

hpexo fic fest: I CAN'T TALK ABOUT THIS IT'S AGAINST THE RULES BUT OHHHH MY GOD IT'S SO MUCH FUN i'M THINKING OF MAKING AN OC VERSION SOON TOO!

Talk about a review that made your day.

I love them all so much. My favorites are the really long ones and when someone told me my writing style reminds them of the pjo books, which is really nice bc I love those books so much. I get worried though because an alarming amount of people have said they haven't slept trying to finish the fic and I'm like oh dear God Please Sleep PlEASe. But I love every review and I try my best to respond to all of them because it's incredibly sweet that ppl take the time to write a review in the first place.

Do you ever get rude reviews and how do you deal with them?

Not really. Someone yelled at my OC before and I was like no not my BABY but that wasn't bad at all, it was kinda amazing to see a reaction like that. Rude reviews would be fun to read tbh. I'm petty I love drama hahaha

Write an alternative ending to [a fic of yours] (or just the summary of one).

Alternative ending to Good Girls: Zelo and the rest of bap takes their anger and grief out in a better way. And then they confront Sooyong and discuss it civilly and everything gets straightened out eventually, there is no big ol' revenge plan. Big Bang and YG don't get involved and don't try to kill both EXO and LILAC and remain passive aggressively angry, Baekhyun and Sooyong move away from SM Town and live happily ever after and she learns to manage her PTSD eventually and they have little baby baeks and soos running around. EXO stop running a mafia and do nice things for people. Mina is back to how she was before, happy again and close with Sooyong like they used to be. Jessica punches Luhan in the face and has a long fulfilling life with Jongin and Sehun (they have a fun time living together and also threesomes and also the three of them love each other a lot). Minhee becomes a high level government security person and challenges Sehun to hacking matches whenever she sees him. Everyone is happy. :(

Alternate Ending to all the time in the world (actually this was the way I did it but then it got confusing so I didn't but now I regret it): The prompt numbers were supposed to be out of order on purpose so if you read fic straight through, it's the oc's timeline of their love story, but if you read it in order of the prompt numbers, it's Baekhyun's timeline of their love story.

Hello there :)
The EXO Naruto Au HAS to become a thing. Like, just imagine Baekhyun running around with his hands thrown back and making some funny jutsus... Awesome!
Also a thing that I wanted to say for a long time: YOUR FICS ARE INCREDIBLE.
I read Good Girls in one go, spent weeks recovering from emotional exhaustion only to re-read it later :)
Elastic Heart - I still don't really know how to handle the feels.
Good Girls Baekhyuns PoV - Killed me. (Will there be a part 2 with the second half of the events?)

So thank you for your wonderful work and hopefully there is more to come :)
