“Now, I am pleased to present to you, the people of Egypt, your new Pharaoh!”

With a deep breath, the white-haired male stepped out into view. He bowed slightly as the woman who introduced him slipped a pyramid-shaped necklace around his neck and gave him a genuine smile. The new Pharaoh continued forward, his hands grasped gently at the balcony as the sun shined brightly on his face, momentarily blinding him. Forcing a smile, he waved to his new subjects as they cheered zealously for their new king. The weight of the situation was finally dawning on him as he continued his facade, cheeks tiring and mind racing.

This isn’t mine.

He looked down at the thousands of smiling faces staring up at him.

None of this is mine.

He felt as if his knees were going to give out at any second, the foreign weight around his neck almost too much for him to bear. The Pharaoh’s mind barely registered the woman’s short closing statement as he was ushered out by one of his other close advisors.

“Great job Pharaoh Ayman!” the younger, tanner male greeted as he guided his ruler back into the building.

Happy to let his face rest, the Pharaoh dropped his smile and nodded.“Minkah please. Just call me Ayaman…”

He grabbed his head and winced.

“Ph- I mean, Ayaman, are you ok?”

The white-haired male just nodded and waved his priest off,” I’ll be in my quarters. No one disturb me.”

Ayaman strode through the various halls of the capital city, his many guards lined up along almost every door along the way. He greeted the most well renowned guard in all of Egypt as he approached his room.

“Hello Asim…”

The female smiled, her long dark hair bouncing as she bowed slightly to her new king.

“Sir, I had a feeling you would forget so I came to meet you here.”

Ayaman’s eyebrows knitted together,” What this time? Not another meeting...”

Asim laughed lightly and shook her head,” No Pharaoh, it’s just that we have moved you to the main bedroom.”

The Pharaoh’s eyes widened.

Not his room…

“Of course, how could I forget?” the man asked rhetorically as he began walking back towards the way he came.

The Pharaoh's room, of course.

Asim walked silently behind the Pharaoh the whole trip to the main bedroom. When they reached the large, plaster double doors, Ayaman’s personal servant was there, ready to let him in.

Oh Ra, I have to go in there.

He greeted the Pharaoh as he opened the doors,“ Sir, it’s good to see you. I hope you enjoy the new-”

“Leave me,” Ayaman interrupted, shutting up his closest servant and leaving him alongside his new guardian.

He in a breath as he took the first few steps into the main bedroom. The Pharaoh stood silently in the room, the only noise present was that of those large plaster doors closing behind him and the gentle wind blowing through the creme colored curtains.

“They didn’t change much,” he mumbled to himself as he studied his new room.

The Pharaoh moved towards the over-sized bed situated directly in the center of the circular room. The warmth and comfort the bed offered looked so inviting. His hands trembled as he removed the bulky necklace, placing it gently on the bedside table before grasping for the beautiful silk sheets.

I wonder…

Ayaman jumped on the bed and buried his head in the pillows. His heart fluttered momentarily as he inhaled the sheet's comforting scent - a mixture of lily and cinnamon - but then it dropped suddenly. Tears flowed slowly from his eyes, staining the silk as the pain in his heart bubbled to the surface.

“He’s gone…” Ayaman gasped between breaths.

I can’t believe he is actually gone.

Everyone knew what was happening inside the Pharaoh’s bedroom - the pain he felt and the tears he cried - but no one dared interfere.

That was the night that the new Pharaoh vowed never again to cry. The night he realized never to let anyone get close enough to him to make him feel the same way ever again.
