A Gamer's Confession

“That Kangjun is really something…” Yuni murmured as she shivered outside the movie theater. She’s been waiting out in the cold, for hours, for her friend to arrive. Yuni could only watch as people came in and out of the movie theater, and hear them talk about the movie they just watched.

Kangjun and Yuni have agreed to watch the new marvel movie, Antman, together, but to Yuni’s disappointment, Kangjun didn’t show up. It wasn’t something new to Yuni; she was used to waiting for Kangjun, only to go home alone in the end. It wasn’t the first time Kangjun stood Yuni up, but this time was different; Kangjun had promised to show up, and seeing how long Yuni has been waiting, it seemed that Kangjun didn’t have any plans on keeping his promise.

“How many times has he done this to me? Fifty times? A hundred?” she whispered angrily and quickly glanced at her watch. The last screening of Antman was about to start and there was still no sign of Kangjun.

“Just a few more minutes.” Yuni told herself and bit her lip, trying her best to endure the cold. She stood on her spot and kept on glancing around the area in search for Kangjun. Minutes passed by and he was still nowhere in sight.

Yuni took out her phone and tried calling Kangjun’s phone. She dropped her hand in defeat once a woman’s voice informed her of her friend’s inability to answer her call. Anger started to build up inside her. She took a deep breath in attempt to calm herself down, but her anger rose even more.

“That Kangjun! He’s gonna pay!” she bursted, and stomped away from the movie theater. People gave her weird glances, but Yuni didn’t mind them. Her anger controlled her mind and body; all she could think of was what Kangjun had done to her.

She has known Kangjun for a year now. Through all those times, they have successfully hung out alone only once. Whenever they went out as a group, Kangjun would gladly come, but whenever Yuni and Kangjun would plan something alone, he would always forget about it, and it was all because of one thing.

Yuni angrily climbed up a bus and quickly sat at the nearest seat. She knew exactly where Kangjun was, and she was determined to give him a piece of her mind. She has never really bothered to go where Kangjun always was. She only went there for the first three times he stood her up, but today, she passed her limits.

After a few minutes of the bus ride, bright lights shone from outside the window next to her, almost blinding Yuni. Seeing the colorful lights, Yuni knew she was at her stop. She quickly called the attention of the driver and went out of the bus.

Yuni looked around the street and spotted a building with a familiar sign. She walked towards it and entered the building.

It was only a year ago since Yuni first entered the said building. Back then, she had a crush on a guy named Youngjae. Youngjae loved playing games, and Yuni was more than willing to do anything just to spend more time with him.

In an attempt to get closer to Youngjae, Yuni agreed to come with him to his gaming gimicks. Yuni watched Youngjae as he played 'League of Legends' with his friends, but was beaten by another man in the same computer shop. That said man cried in delight as the computer screen informed him of his victory, and even gained the attention of the whole computer shop.

Now, she watched the same man cheer in victory and exchange high fives with the people around him. He had a big smile on his face, a smile that Yuni knew too well, that she just wanted to wipe off his face.

Yuni took a deep breath before she stomped towards the person responsible for her rage. She squeezed through numerous chairs and tables until she came face to face the man's back.

"Kang Jun." she lightly called him. Kangjun kept seated on his chair and resumed on playing, not hearing Yuni's call.

"Hey! Kangjun!" Yuni said again, a bit louder. The man beside him looked back and his eyes quickly widened at the sight of Yuni. He quickly removed the headphones on his ears and shook Kangjun's shoulders.

"Kangjun! Kangjun!" He panicked as Yuni raised a brow at him, "Yuni is here, Kangjun." He said.

"What? What's your problem, Minwoo?" Kangjun asked his friend as he irritatedly pushed the other's hand away, finally able to hear someone's voice.

"Yuni's here." Minwoo repeated. Kangjun scrunched his face and chuckled.

"What do you mean 'Yuni's here?'" he asked, as if it was the most ridiculous thing he has ever heard. Minwoo pointed to Kangjun's back and Yuni slowly crossed her arms as Kangjun turned to look behind him. At the sight of her, Kangjun's eyes widened.

"Y-Yuni..." he stuttered, "What are you doing here?" he said as he let out an awkward laugh. At his words, Yuni couldn't help but scoff.

"What am I doing here?" Yuni repeated his question, "I don't know. I shouldn't be at the Cinema watching Antman, right?" she asked sarcastically.

"Oh..." Kangjun said, finally remembering his promise, "That's right... We made plans..." he said, his voice getting lower with each syllable.

Kangjun kept quiet afterwards, unable to say anything. Yuni raised both of her brows as she glared at Kangjun. Minwoo, on the other hand, bit his lip, trying to stop himself from chuckling.

"Yeah... I forgot." Kangjun choked out after a few moments of silence. Yuni scoffed at his words, and was about to start her long speech at how Kangjun has stood her up for numerous times already, but Kangjun quickly spoke up.

"It's okay, it's okay." He rapidly started, "We can still watch." He said and was about to pack his things when Minwoo caught his attention.

"Game is about to start." Minwoo informed him, and quickly returned his attention to his screen, afraid of catching Yuni's gaze.

Kangjun gazed at his computer screen with his mouth agaped. Minwoo was correct; his game was about to start. Kangjun let out another awkward laugh and looked at Yuni in guilt. Yuni knew what he wanted to say, and quickly glared at him harder telling him 'no'.

"Come on. Just one last game." Kangjun pleaded, slowly standing up from his seat, "One last game and we'll go watch." He said and gave Yuni a dashing smile.

Seeing his smile, Yuni's heart softened. She didn't know why, but she couldn't resist Kangjun's smile.

"Fine." Yuni murmured with an unsatisfied expression, while Kangjun held the opposite of her expression. He pulled out the chair beside him and patted it, telling Yuni to sit down.

"Here, sit first." He said and brought out the chair to Yuni.

Yuni groaned but sat on the seat anyway. Kangjun smiled before he quickly sat back down on his seat and returned his attention to his game.

"Now, let's win another round!" He said, and a few men around him, including Minwoo, cheered.

Yuni could only sigh. She was a hundred percent sure that they wouldn't be able to watch the movie. It took at least half an hour to finish a game, and the last screening of Antman had already started. It would take a miracle for Kangjun to just finish the game before the movie ends. She was sure they wouldn’t make it.

“Alright.” Kangjun said and the game started. Kangjun and Minwoo’s eyes were glued to their computer screens, while Yuni could only watch.

She couldn’t understand why she was still there. Yuni could’ve just left and went home, knowing that they won’t be able to watch the movie anyway. But something kept her there, or rather something, someone.

“Get ready to support me, Minwoo.” Yuni heard Kangjun say. She sighed once more as she stared at the man beside her. He was focused on his game, and there was no trace of the smile he had a while ago.

His smile. Something about his smile made her weak. It made her legs weak and gave her butterflies in her stomach. Once Kangjun had that smile on his face, she had no way of saying ‘no’ to him, which is probably why he had got away with all his past doings.

Kangjun was an easy going and playful person. Though they were different – not that Yuni was the opposite of him - something pulled her to him.

Minutes passed and Yuni could just stare off into space, in her thoughts. Seeing all these computers around her, her thoughts drifted to Youngjae. It had been a while since she had last talked to him, and strangely, she didn’t mind not keeping in touch with him. Ever since she met Kangjun, she had spent most of her time with him and his friends, slowly forgetting about Youngjae. She found herself closer to Kangjun than she ever was with Youngjae.

“Yuni?” a familiar voice spoke, breaking Yuni out of her thoughts. She looked up and in an instant, her heart started to beat faster.

“Y-Youngjae.” She stuttered as the man in her thoughts appeared in front of her.

“Hey, it’s been a while.” He said with an angelic smile. And just like that, Yuni found herself slowly falling for Youngjae once again.

“Y-yeah. It really has been a while.” She responded, turning her body towards Youngjae. It was like they were the only two people on earth. For a while, Yuni forgot the existence of the people around her, and her anger towards Kangjun.

“How have you been?” she asked, her mood finally brightening up.

“I’ve been good, how about you?” Youngjae asked back as he coolly placed a hand on the computer desk in front of him.

“I’ve been good too.” She said, a smile breaking out of her face, “What are you doing here?” she asked. Though it seemed like a stupid question, and she already knew the answer, she still asked, wanting to keep their conversation going.

“Me and my friends played some games for a while.” He said as he pointed to where his friends where. Yuni stretched her neck to see where Youngjae was pointing, and there his friends were talking and chuckling with each other.

“I see.” Yuni said as she sat back on her seat.

“We’re going to get some ice cream.” Youngjae started and suddenly looked down to the ground, “Do you, maybe, want to come and join us?” he asked. At his question, Yuni couldn’t help but bite her lip, stopping herself from breaking out into a big smile. It had always been her dream to be asked out by her crush. Though he didn’t really ask her out on a date, Youngjae still invited her to spend time with him.

           “Sure, I-“

“Yes!” Kangjun yelled, cutting Yuni off. He stood up from his seat and exchanged high fives with Minwoo, similar to what he did earlier.

“Hey, Yuni! We-“ Kangjun was about to deliver the news to his friend when he saw another person with her.

“Oh, hey Youngjae. I didn’t know you were there.” He said, waving at the other man, which Youngjae returned, and quickly turned his attention to Yuni, “Yuni! We won!” he said, excitement in his voice. Unlike Kangjun’s delighted expression, Yuni reflected the opposite; she had a straight and bored expression on her face. For a few moments, Yuni kept quiet.

“Good for you.” She said as she crossed her arms in irritation. Regret started to fill her thoughts.

Why did she stop talking to Youngjae? He was a nice and sweet man; a man definitely worth her attention and love. Why did she waste her time trying to keep up with Kangjun? He stood up her numerous times already, yet she kept on forgiving him. Why did she crave to be around Kangjun, when she was supposed to be around Youngjae?

Yuni abruptly stood up from her seat, her chair creating a loud noise, startling Kangjun.

“Where are you going?” Kangjun asked, seeing her friend fix her things. Yuni scoffed and gave Kangjun a long and straight look.

“Youngjae invited me to go spend time with him. I find that a lot better than sitting here and watching you play.” She said. At her words, Kangjun was speechless.

“B-but,” Kangjun wanted to say something, but he couldn’t. He didn’t know what to say, nor how to convince Yuni to stay.

“Should we go then?” Youngjae asked, scratching the back of his head, finding the scene in front of him awkward. Yuni took one last look at Kangjun and waited for him to say something. Though she wouldn’t admit it, a small part of Yuni wanted Kangjun to say something; she wanted him to give her a reason to stay.

“Kangjun, the game is about to start again.” Minwoo suddenly said. And just like that, Yuni had made up her mind.

“Good luck on your game, Kangjun.” Yuni said, and turned around without hesitation.

“Let’s go?” Youngjae asked with a smile on his face. Yuni nodded and smiled as well. Youngjae started to walk towards his friends, and Yuni followed after him.

“Guys, you remember Yuni, right?” Youngjae asked his friends, “She’s coming with us to get ice cream.” He said, and Youngjae’s friends started to greet Yuni.

“Let’s go then.” Youngjae said as he walked out of the computer shop with his friends following him. Yuni followed them but not before taking a quick glance at Kangjun who was talking to Minwoo. She shook her head in disappointment. Yuni had really hoped that Kangjun would keep his promise, but he didn’t.

Yuni wanted to stay by Kangjun’s side, but she had to think about herself as well. She had the right to have fun and go out, and not just sit beside Kangjun and watch him play. It was also the chance for her to get closer to Youngjae. It was a chance that only came at that time because Yuni had spent so much time with Kangjun.

“So, what’s your favorite ice cream flavor?” Youngjae tried to start a conversation with Yuni, but her head was filled with thoughts of Kangjun.

Yuni was frustrated at him for always leaving her hanging. She was disappointed in him for not trying to make her stay. Yuni was irritated at herself for thinking about Kangjun when she could spend her time with Youngjae. But she was mostly furious at herself for still liking Kangjun, even though he had stood her up for tons of times.

“Wait!” a voice called, making Yuni’s heartbeat fasten. All of them stopped at their tracks, and it took all of Yuni’s might not to turn around and run to the man a few feet away from her.

“Yuni.” He called, with a bit of desperation in his voice. At his call, Yuni quickly turned around and stared at the man in front of her.

“Kangjun…” she mumbled, “What are you doing here?” Yuni asked, her face full of surprise. A part of Yuni was baffled at Kangjun’s appearance in front of her, but another part of her was sincerely happy to see him.

“Didn’t your game start already? Shouldn’t you be playing?” Yuni asked, recalling the words Minwoo said a few moments ago. Kangjun panted in his place, probably because he ran to catch up with them, and flashed a bright smile to Yuni.

“Let’s go get milk tea.” He ignored her question and smiled at Yuni innocently. Yuni hesitated and wanted to agree to his offer, but shook her head.

“I’m already getting ice cream with Youngjae.” She pointed out as she glance at Youngjae and his friends, who only waited patiently, “Maybe next time when you finally have the time to hang out with me.” She said, bitterness evident in her voice. Kangjun’s face dropped hearing Yuni’s words, but he didn’t give up.

“It’ll be my treat.” he said, “To make up for all the hang outs I’ve missed.” He tried to persuade her. Yuni looked at Kangjun in confusion. Why did he suddenly ran out of the computer shop and asked her to get milk tea with him?

“She’s already coming with us, Kangjun, okay?” Youngjae said and wrapped an arm around Yuni’s shoulders. They started to walk away, until a hand pulled Yuni away from Youngjae’s grasp.

“Don’t go with them.” Kangjun pleaded, his hand holding onto Yuni’s wrist tightly.

“Why shouldn’t I?” Yuni asked as she pulled her arm out of Kangjun’s grip, her voice full of confusion. Something inside Kangjun churned when he saw Youngjae’s arms around Yuni. One thing was for sure, he didn’t like it.

“Yeah, why shouldn’t she come with us?” Youngjae asked, as if he was daring Kangjun to say something. His eyes were shooting lasers and it was evident that he was not happy with what Kangjun was doing.

Youngjae stepped forward, and so did Kangjun. They stood face to face, both glaring at each other. Yuni grew rigid at her spot, knowing that if she didn’t step in. It was the same scene a year ago. Youngjae didn’t handle his loss to Kangjun very well and a fight was about to start, until Yuni stepped in and stopped the fight. Kangjun and his friends took out Yuni for ice cream to thank her for standing up for them, and that was how the two of them got closer.

“It doesn’t matter anyway.” Yuni sighed, earning the attention of both men, “I’m going home.” She said and was about to walk away until Youngjae spoke.

           “Yuni-” he called.

“No.” she said sternly before flashing him a small smile, “I’m a bit tired right now. We can hang out next time. I’ll call you.” Yuni assured him and started to walk away from the group.

Neither of the two seemed to want to give up, and Yuni didn’t want to stick around to find out. She was already drained from waiting for Kangjun at the theater for too long. Yuni really needed to rest, and she wasn’t in the mood to be in between of a drama of two boys.

Yuni rode the first bus that she saw, back home. She sat at a two-person seat, and scooted towards the window. She was just about to get lost in her thoughts when she felt her seat shift and she quickly glanced beside her.

“You’re not calling him.” He said sternly, crossing his arms. Yuni scoffed and crossed her arms, as well.

“What are you doing here, Kangjun?” she said, exhaustion in her voice. The very reason why she decided to go home was to get away from Kangjun and the others, but now that Kangjun has followed her, her tiresome day still has yet to end.

“You’re not going to call him.” Kangjun repeated. Yuni raised a brow and glared at the man beside her, remembering what she had said to Youngjae.

“And who are you to say that?” she asked, as she turned her back on Kangjun.

“I’m your friend, Kangjun, who cares about you.” She heard Kangjun say, “And I know Youngjae is not the guy you think he is.” He said, earning another scoff from Yuni.

“It doesn’t matter. You’re not the guy who I thought you were either.” Yuni blurted out, surprising both Kangjun and herself. Realizing what she had just said, Yuni looked down and bit her lip. She didn’t mean to say what she said, but she couldn’t take it back either. After a few moments of silence, Kangjun decided to break it.

“I’m sorry.” He whispered, “I didn’t mean to break my promise.” He said. Yuni looked at Kangjun. His head was lowered and he was looking straight at the bus floor. Though he wasn’t looking at her, Yuni could tell he was being sincere. But he didn’t do it just once, he did tons of times.

“I just don’t understand,” Yuni started, “You make plans to go out with me, and when the time has come, you don’t show up.” She recalled her past experiences, “You can just simply not agree to hang out with me.” She pointed out, “Or if you really don’t like me, you can just tell me.” She said. With those set of words, Kangjun quickly looked up at Yuni.

“That’s not it.” He denied, and tried to speak but Yuni cut her off.

“Or is gaming really more important for you?!” she asked, lost in her own thoughts. She remembered all of those times she was left alone because Kangjun was too busy playing.

“I-" he stuttered. Kangjun wanted to speak, but he wasn’t sure on what he should say. He looked down, once again, unable to say anything.

“Am I really nothing to you?" Yuni said, her eyes b with tears. All of her hidden feelings had been revealed. All questions had come out. Yuni felt like the bus was spinning as her head felt light.

“No.” Kangjun mumbled. Yuni took a deep breath and stopped her tears from falling before she looked at Kangjun sternly, waiting for him to speak. Kangjun sighed before he looked back at Yuni.

“You’re everything to me.” He confessed. At that moment, Yuni’s world stopped turning. Her breath stopped as thoughts stopped entering her mind, and all she could do was look at Kangjun. The only thing that was running rapidly was her heart.

Slowly, Kangjun inched closer to Yuni. His movement was unsure, but his thoughts were sure; he was sure he wanted to show her how he felt, but he didn’t know exactly how. Their nose touched and Yuni took a sharp breath, not moving away from her position. Kangjun was about to move closer, when a man’s voice echoed around the bus.

“Yongsan! We’re now at Yongsan!” the man called. At the man’s voice, Yuni jumped at her spot and quickly stood up, remembering that she was at her stop.

“Yuni!” Kangjun called out to her, but she quickly walked out of the bus and started walking away.

Yuni just kept on walking and walking, with nothing in her mind. She had no idea where she was going and just kept on walking, until a pair of arms wrapped around her from behind, causing her to tumble forward, but the person behind her kept his balance.

“I like you.” He whispered, from behind her, “A lot.” He added. Yuni stood still and didn’t budge in her place. She was still processing everything that was happening around her.

Everything was so sudden. One minute, Kangjun seemed like he didn’t care about her, and the other he’s telling her that he likes her. Everything was happening too fast that Yuni didn’t know how to react. She just wanted to spend time with Kangjun, and what she got was more than what she asked for.

Yuni didn’t say anything, and Kangjun was growing impatient. Yuni kept on quiet and didn’t respond to everything he said. Suddenly, Yuni felt a soft sensation on her cheeks. She moved her head to her side to see what it was, and saw Kangjun kissing her lips.

“Ah!” Yuni let out a loud yelp, and quickly pushed Kangjun away and slapped his arm. Kangjun couldn’t help but chuckle at Yuni’s reaction while Yuni could only glare at him.

“What did you do that for?!” Yuni asked, her cheeks flushing red.

“You weren’t saying anything.” He said with a proud smile on his face. Yuni had the urge the punch the smile out of Kangjun’s face, but the longer she looked at him, the calmer she felt.

Yuni stared at him, and she could feel her heart growing soft again. At the silence, Kangjun quickly grabbed Yuni’s face with both of his hands and quickly kissed her forehead.

“Hey! Stop it!” Yuni said, and tried to escape Kangjun’s grip, but he secured her well. He repeatedly kissed her forehead, cheeks, nose and chin, again and again, while Yuni continuously try to escape.

“Stop!” Yuni yelped, and Kangjun chuckled, finally stopping. He looked straight at Yuni’s eyes, and Yuni stared back at him.

“I’m giving you one last chance.” He spoke dangerously low, but his expression showed that he was playing around, “If you don’t respond, I’m going to kiss you in the lips.” He said, and Yuni immediately fidgeted.

“I like you.” Kangjun said, and studied Yuni’s expression. Yuni bit her lip and closed her eyes. Her heart was thumping fast, and she felt butterflies in her stomach. Hearing those words, once again, from Kangjun, made her feel satisfied.

Due to her lack of response, Kangjun slowly brought his face closer to Yuni’s. When their nose touched, Yuni spoke.

“I like you too.” She whispered. Hearing her words, Kangjun crashed his lips to Yuni’s, kissing her. Yuni’s eyes widened at the sudden contact as her hands flew to Kangjun’s chest.

Kangjun pulled away from the kiss, and smiled at Yuni. Yuni, on the other hand, glared at Kangjun and slapped his arm, once again, surprising Kangjun.

“If you really liked me, why would you leave me hanging for so many times?” she questioned. Kangjun looked down, and chuckled at her question, earning a deadlier glare from Yuni.

“Well,” he started, “Whenever we would hang out, I would always find myself really nervous,” he said as he brushed Yuni’s hair behind her ear, “So, I would always play games for comfort.” He revealed, and pulled Yuni into a hug.

“But in the end, I tend to forget or coward out of our dates.” He said and tightened his grip on her. Yuni scrunched her face and wiggled out of Kangjun’s embrace.

“So you chose to make me wait for nothing instead of showing up in front of me while you’re nervous?” she asked with a raised brow. Kangjun gave her a guilty look, and suddenly started kissing her repeatedly again.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” He kept on repeating, as he kissed every inch of her face. Yuni had her face scrunched and her eyes closed as she received kisses from Kangjun.

“Alright! Alright!” Yuni cried, a part of her enjoying Kangjun’s kisses, while another part of her wanting him to stop. Kangjun stopped kissing her and wore a satisfied smile on his face. Yuni tried to stop herself from smiling, but couldn’t help it, and broke out into a smile.

“Excuse me, kids.” Another voice spoke up. Both of them looked at their side and saw an adult, probably in her middle thirties.

“Please take your business somewhere else. The streets aren’t the best place for those types of things.” She said, pertaining to Kangjun and Yuni’s skinship. Silence enveloped all of them, and Yuni found herself breaking into laughter. The woman looked at her weirdly, while Kangjun joined Yuni’s delight.

“I’ll take you home.” Kangjun said, and Yuni happily nodded. They started to walk away, and Kangjun looked back at the woman and quickly bowed in apology.

“We apologize for the disturbance.” He said, and resumed in walking. He took Yuni’s hand in his, and both of them couldn’t help but smile.

“But wait,” Yuni said, taking his hand away from Kangjun, “What do you mean by ‘date’? Those were never planned as dates.” She pointed out. Kangjun only chuckled and retrieved Yuni’s hand, before they resumed in walking.

“I’ll make it up to you starting tomorrow.” He said, earning Yuni’s interest.

“Let’s hang out at the computer so you could watch me beat Youngjae’s in League of Legends.” Kangjun said. And with that, Yuni let out another set of laughter.

Well, that was a plan Kangjun will surely show up to.
