The cold and heavy rain blurred my sight as I ran as fast as I could through the forest. From a distance, I could hear the knight’s screams of agony. I wanted to turn back and help him, yet I knew that I could be of no use in his battle. I would just be a burden – I’m just a girl, for crying out loud! Moreover, it was the knight who had told me to run away and save myself. Save myself for I was the only hope of the kingdom. The rightful heiress to the throne which my tyrannical stepmother has taken from me from the day of my father’s death.

I could hear the sound of horses’ hooves fast approaching. They were after me, now. They had probably already killed the knight. The thought of his death brought tears to my eyes. I was crying, yet I could not stop running. My bleeding feet were drenched in mud, making it more difficult for me to run faster. A sharp branch from an oak tree made a huge gash across my arm as I ran by it. 

Tug-a-tug tug-a-tug tug-a-tug. The sound of hooves was louder – much more audible; which only meant that they were close behind.

“There she is!”

I froze in my tracks, and slowly turned around to face my death.
