Four
Everyday BeautyIt was a grey, slow morning. Jaehwa blinked, closed her eyes, and blinked again. Then a chorus of birds broke the drone of the early city traffic she could hear from outside the window, the noise finally causing her to prop up on one of her elbows. Her vision gained focus and adjusted to the dull brightness as she rubbed her knuckles sluggishly over her bleared eyes. Recollections of last night slowly sank into her mind, as she heard low, rhythmical breaths which weren’t her own.
If she had been more awake, the shock to find Taehyung lying beside her on the bed wouldn’t have been as impacting as it did then. She took the chance to observe his current vulnerable state, and although his sleeping face was almost just as good as it was when he was awake, she still had the temptation to get a black pen and draw some obscure drawing on it. She couldn’t deny she was slightly envious - he looked more beautiful in his sleep then she probably ever did. One time her older sister took a picture of her when Jaehwa had passed out, when Jaehwa saw the photo she was mortified; her hair was stuck to the drool running down the corner of her gaping mouth and her eyes were half open.
Taehyung's lips were slightly parted and thin shadows under his eyes were produced by his dark lashes. His arm cushioned his head and he was lying on his side which caused his hair to move aside the same direction, baring his forehead. But as almost faultless as he seemed, she was well aware that Taehyung was no angel - he was human. And like all humans, he must have some of his own defects. One of them she saw was a small mole just below the tip of his nose where the curve ended. She didn't notice it at first, but only recently discovering it she chortled to herself.
He groaned and Jaehwa immediately covered and held her breath, praying that she didn’t wake him. She sighed in relief when he was once again motionless and tried thinking of some way to get off the bed without him awakening. It would have been easier if he had been the one lying beside the wall like she was and not be the closest to the edge. And he was tall too, his body spread almost end-to-end which did not make things any easier for her. She grumbled - the only way to get off the bed was over him; this would either end in ultimate success or ultimate failure. She could’ve just stayed there so she wouldn’t have to risk possible embarrassment, but her stomach didn’t seem to want to cooperate, it growled and she squirmed to try to silence it.
Very warily, she sat up and even more cautiously, brought one leg over his torso and succeeded without awakening him. She was now knelt on either side of his body without touching him, and slowly tried to get both legs off the edge of the bed. Just when she thought it was a mission success, Taehyung tugged one of her arms which caused her to topple back to the spot next to him. Jaehwa turned her head to the side and frowned when she saw his eyes were closed. “How long have you been awake?”
His eyes remained shut. “A couple minutes before you,” he replied. “I wasn’t just going to open my eyes while you were staring at my face.” He chuckled. “That would’ve been awkward, don’t you think so sweetheart?”
She sulked even more and murmured; “You knew I was staring?”
“Well you did just confirm it.” A smirk planted on his face.
She ignored him and remembered the task that occupied her mind before and sat up. “Can you move your leg, please? I’m so hungry, I really want to eat.” He didn’t reply and firmly kept his eyes shut, still feigning sleep. She sighed, and proceeded to once again get off the bed by going over him. And once again, he pulled her back. Her stomach growled and she shook him. He didn’t budge. She prodded his cheek. “Taehyung….” She was just relieved that she didn’t have work today, otherwise she would’ve been late already and wouldn’t have been able to cope with his playing around.
The corner of his lip perked up. “I’ll let you pass on one condition.”
“Which is?” What did he want her to do? Be his slave for the entire week? Prank call the police? Kiss him? What? She could only imagine the worst in her head.
He finally opened his eyelids and grinned, his eyes forming into crescents. “Let me stay here for another few hours.”
A silence between them ensued.
“Okay?” She continued to stare at him - that wasn’t what she was expecting. Most people would’ve taken advantage of that kind of thing.
“You sound hesitant,” Taehyung said after evaluating her expression.
“It’s not that, it’s just that I expected you to say some other weird abnormal request.”
His mouth twitched, then said while laughing, “What kind of guy do you take me for?”
She took that as a rhetorical question.
He propped himself on his elbow and then sat at the edge of the edge of the bed, stretching his limbs. He stood up, making his way to the window and gazed down at the street below which finally allowed her to get off the bed and get breakfast – their breakfast if she included Taehyung. She trudged to the kitchen and rummaged through the food cupboards.
“What do you want to eat?” she called out loud enough so he could hear from the other room. “I have cereal, bread and a box with packets of ramen.”
A reply came a shortly later. “Anything will do!” Cereal it was then. She went back to where Taehyung was and placed the two bowls, cereal box and carton of milk onto the small table in the centre.
“Jaehwa look at this little guy.” He went over to her and sitting on his hand was a small spider. She looked at Taehyung and his reaction was noticeably different from hers – the gleam in his eyes reminded her so much as that of a child; a child fascinated by even the meekest of things. “Isn’t he beautiful?” Taehyung continued to marvel at the spider in his hand. Jaehwa looked down at the spider. Nothing was particularly special or interesting about it; it was just an ordinary house spider. She thought carefully her choice of words, but in the end she just agreed.
“He is,” she said and turned back to the cereal on the table. Taehyung put the spider carefully on the window sill and then made his way over and sat across her. He poured cereal and milk into his own bowl, another interval of silence hanging between them apart from the chinking of their spoons against the bowls as they ate.
The steady downpour of the rain outside sounded like dancing feet. Jaehwa looked towards the window and saw that the sky was a melancholy grey, the dense clouds blotting out the sun. “The weather’s nice, maybe we can go for a walk later,” Taehyung suggested when he looked to where her gaze was.
He once again succeeded to baffle her. “But it’s raining, we’ll get soaked.”
His expression was indifferent. “Sweetheart, there’s this brilliant invention called the umbrella.” Jaehwa paused to look up at him - never had she come across someone like that guy, not that she could remember at least. His lips lifted upwards, but the smile didn’t quite reach his eyes. “We only just met, and since we’re neighbours it would be a nice for us to go for a walk together and talk a little more.” He looked back down at his cereal. “Besides, walks in the rain can be enlivening.”
“I guess that would be nice,” she said eventually after she thought about it. A little rain would do no harm. It had been a while since the last time she went on a walk with someone - even if it was in the rain - but it was better than staying cooped up inside doing the usual. He opened his mouth to reply, when they heard a knock on the door. “Hang on.” Jaehwa stood up to answer it and opened the door slightly to see who it was. A bunny smile was what greeted her. She opened the door wider and grinned at him. “Morning Jungkook.”
“Morning,” he said cheerfully. Jaehwa looked down at what was held in his hands; it was a box of different movies, and then she remembered; she had promised to spend the day with Jungkook watching films since he didn’t have class today. But she also just agreed to go on a walk with Taehyung. She couldn’t break her promise to Jungkook now, he talked about it constantly ever since he asked.
“You can come in,” she told him, feeling guilty that she forgot and he walked through the doorway and slipped his shoes off.
She shut the door and a deep voice called her shortly after. “Jaehwa?”
She turned, it was Taehyung. Jungkook looked a little surprised seeing him, and flicked his eyes between Taehyung and her. “Jaehwa, is this…?”
