the story set place in 1930s during the french colonial period of vietnam. ngoc lien, beautiful and kind-hearted ,was a daughter of a poor farmer live who dream was only to have a family with somebody she trully love. unfortunately, because of their debts, her parent had to sell her to a brothel were she was totured and brutally. as the trauma she had,she soon developed thougths that man is "evil and a cheater". she served most of her guest until she met phan tuan,a rich but insensitive gentelman. phan tuan hired her as his wife in order to please him . through ngoc lien accepted but she hated him and often have bad feeling about him until she saw the good-side of him,a kind-hearted man who love and care for the poor. eventually,ngoc lien soon realised that she felt in love with him and was also responded by phan tuan who revealed his love for her . however, tuan's parent didnt accept the couple love and plotted a plan to divide the 2 up. they tricked ngoc lien and kidnapped her to a farer place while forcing tuan to marry mai loan,a young but ty girl with many lover and husband 

soon realised she is being tricked,ngoc lien searched for a way to meet tuan but she found no hope.she soon started her own carrer by doing many job such as waitress,flower vendor,... while searching for him until she managed to gain enough money to start her buisiness and have severeal but lack of important informations about the whereabout of tuan . phan tuan in meanwhile ,couldnt stand mai loan tyness, had escaped and decided to search for lien himself.unfortunately, while attempting to search for lien's information. tuan got his leg injured and since then physically disabled . through he tried his best to find her. he did success 10 years later when ngoc lien,who was now rich, found him and through his poverty and physical disability,still love him and accepted to be his wife
