Change of Heart

Stay With Me

"Welcome to E-KOM."

Baekhyun couldn't figure out why he was so in shock. It was either because he had been officially accepted as an E-KOM member or if it was because he was able to project his voice in a way he never imagined. He subconsciously grazed his throat with his fingertips. His own thoughts began to drown out the praises and questions around him and all he could think was did I do that just now?

"Baekhyun." It was Yixing's voice that snapped him out of his trance. "You're now apart of E-KOM!" He congratulated him with the hug he wasn't able to give him at the hospital.

"Hi Baekhyun," The owl-eyed boy stepped forward and extended his hand. "I'm Kyungsoo and just like Luhan, I'm also a singer. I'm really looking forward to working with you." Baekhyun slightly smiled and clasped their hands together.

"I-I'm Jongin! I don't sing or anything, but just like Sehun, I'm here often." The chocolate haired boy quickly stuck his hand out. Judging by his eagerness, Baekhyun also quickly let go of Kyungsoo's small hand and held onto Jongin's.

Suddenly remembering his follow up with his doctor, he immediately let go with another apologetic expression. "I'm sorry, everyone. Thank you for this, but I can't stay. I have a lot to do before my mother gets back from work. I promise I'll contact you all the next time I can't make it." Junmyeon just smiled and nodded his head to show his understanding. "Oh, and my mother wants you to help out too, Yixing." Baekhyun gave Yixing a wide-eyed look, hoping that he was able to catch the message he was trying to send.

Before Baekhyun left the room, he glanced at everyone one more time. He couldn't help but lock eyes with Chanyeol who had a mysterious gaze. He didn't look angry nor disappointed, it was a questionable look that made Baekhyun feel nervous on the inside. He couldn't tell if Chanyeol was still angry at him because he did compliment him after he sang. Baekhyun shook the thoughts away and walked out of the room.

Please don't be mad at me.

Yixing stared at the closing door for a brief moment before the light bulb in his head . "A-Ah, hey! Wait up, Baekhyun! See you guys on Monday." Just like that, Yixing had also left the room.

Chanyeol closed his eyes, feeling the cool breeze tickle his skin. After Baekhyun and Yixing left, the group played a couple of songs and just did basic vocal exercises before Junmyeon called it a day. Chanyeol unknowingly let out a sigh and dropped his head back against the seat.

"What's wrong?" Luhan asked, tapping Chanyeol's knee. He shook his head and closed his eyes. What exactly was wrong?

"Shut up, I'm not your best friend for nothing. What's eating you?" Luhan pushed whilst reaching a stop light. "Spill it, Park Chanyeol."

Chanyeol sighed once more and ran a hand through his crimson hair. "I- I don't really know. I don't know how I feel about Baekhyun-- and no, not in a romantic way, idiot." He glanced over at Luhan who was biting back a smile. "It's like, I don't know if I want to trust him."

Luhan groaned as he lightly tapped on the gas. "Seriously, Chanyeol? At least he came back apologize and give us an explanation instead of not showing up at all." Chanyeol parted his lips but closed them and folded his arms across his chest instead. He's right.

"But you know how Junmyeon is when it comes to tardies."

"That explains why he's always up your when you're late."

"Hey, but I always text him the moment I know I have to stay back."

Chanyeol watched as Luhan laughed and pursed his lips together to pfft at him. If Luhan continued to provide a counter attack for everything he said, Chanyeol wasn't sure how much longer he could sit in the car. He sighed in relief at the sight of his house coming up in a distance.

"You know Luhan, I don't know anyone else with as much sass as you." Chanyeol laughed, unbuckling his seatbelt.

The angelic boy just smiled and swept his bangs across his forehead. "You love me anyways-- and dammit Chanyeol, you have a damn car. When in the world are you going to pick me up and take me to school?!"

"My house is on the way when you leave yours. Plus, it wouldn't make sense if I drove to your house, turn back around, and then head to school. Just think about the gas, but thanks for the ride Luhan. I'll take you somewhere next time."

He waved at his friend who drove off down the street. A slight pain arose from his head and he rubbed his temples in an attempt to soothe the pain. Where the hell did his headache come from? He walked into his house with his knuckles digging into the center of his forehead, trying to relieve himself.

Dropping his bag on top of his bed, he followed in suit. After a glass of water and an asprin, the headache was starting to die down. He stared at his bag, knowing that there was a ton of homework waiting to be finished, but he shook his head placed his headphones around his ears. Rock, RnB, hip-hop, and even a couple of E-KOM's original songs passed through his headphones and it was enough to knock him out for a couple of hours.

Chanyeol awoke from the lack of blankets on top of him. A cool breeze passed through the thin material of his v-neck and swiped across his slightly exposed ankles. Maybe he should have changed into more comfortable clothing before taking a nap.

His room had become dim and his open bedroom window indicated that his mother came home from work. As his thoughts began resurface and become clear, Chanyeol found himself humming along to a song that seemed quite familiar. The soft strums of the guitar and the angelic voice of the male singer filled his ears. But the song did seem peculiar, wasn't the original artist a female? Did he always have a male cover of this song on his mp3?

Chanyeol slip his mp3 out of his pocket and the screen clearly showed the song title and the original female artist, but all he could hear was the soothing male vocals drowning out the original.

Baekhyun!

His whole body shot up and his heart beat had increased. The breeze entering the room was cold, but he could feel himself break into a nervous sweat.

This was the song he sang today.

Chanyeol's lips stretched upward little by little. Junmyeon made the right decision in choosing him as Jongdae's replacement. Baekhyun had a unique pitch that was easily addicting and not to mention breath taking. His voice could easily melt together with Luhan and Kyungsoo, but did he trust him completely?

With a heavy sigh, he stared out the window and was able to catch a small glimpse of the full moon at a distance. "Well, there goes half of my day." Chanyeol grunted sitting up in his bed. He glanced at his bag, that was now kicked to the floor, he rolled his eyes at the thought of staying up the whole night trying to finish new and late assignments.

The faint sound of his text ringtone rung from underneath his pillow. He lazily fished for his mobile device to find one text message from Junmyeon, reminding him of the practice room clean up Saturday morning at 10:30 am. One text message from his mother telling him that she's dropping off paper work to Luhan's and another text message from Luhan asking why he didn't accompany his mother to come over.

Yeah, I got it. You'll provide food, right JunMoney? Lol.

Okay, mother. Tell Luhan I'm coming over too.

Sheesh, I'm coming over now, your Highness.

Chanyeol already had his bag in one hand but the more he visualized himself slumped over at his desk with multiple text books and papers, the more he lowered his bag back onto his carpet floor.

"Homework can wait."

If his heart continued to beat this fast, Chanyeol was sure that his heart would leap out of his chest soon. He knew he should have left Luhan's house before midnight so he had time to do homework. Instead, they played video games and went out for a late ice cream run. He did not get home until 1:30 in the morning and didn't sleep until five attempting to do homework. As punishment, here he was running down the hallway to get to his first class.

Luhan had already told him beforehand that he needed to be at school early to present an assignment to one of his teachers so Chanyeol had to drive to school. But even after going 60 on a 30, parking crooked, and sprinting four flights of stairs, it wasn't enough to get to his class on time.

"Park Chanyeol." His teacher scowled and folded his arms over his chest.

Chanyeol swallowed the lump in his chest as he stood in the doorway of his classroom. "Mr. Han, I swear--I can explain--"

His teacher held up a hand and gestured Chanyeol to sit down. "Chanyeol, you were late to three of my classes and according to the syllabus, I'm going to have to admit you to after school detention."

Chanyeol tried to defend himself, but his teacher silenced him and all he could do was slump in his chair and groan to himself. He sent Junmyeon a quick text saying there was a slight chance he would be really late to practice and rested his head against his desk.

Can today get any worse?

Baekhyun groaned as he eyed science textbook. Not only did it add more weight in his backpack, he was going to be spending the whole weekend with it taking notes on three chapters and creating a presentation to submit online.

"Class three must be ." Luhan took the textbook out of Baekhyun's grasp and skimmed through the pages as they walked down the hallway towards the practice room. Baekhyun's eyes widened at Luhan's choice of words. He looked so delicate, almost like an angel so the moment a cuss word would slip pass his pink lips, Baekhyun couldn't help but be amused.

"It is actually, my sleeping schedule is a mess and I'm about three episodes behind of this show I'm watching." Baekhyun sighed. He hasn't been able to have any free time since he started attending the academy, but what made up for it was being able to have the opportunity to sing like how he used to. His mind still hasn't wrapped itself around the fact that he actually sang yesterday. Although, he wasn't sure how long that kind of magic was going to last so he hoped that he could stay this way even just for a while longer.

They soon reached the practice room, but before either one of them could turn the handle, the door swung open revealing Sehun who wasn't wearing his work uniform for the first time since Baekhyun has seen him. Sehun was dressed in a casual gray graphic-tee and black slim jeans that fitted his legs nicely. His blonde hair was pushed back revealing some of natural hair color.

"Hey Baekhyun." He greeted casually.

"Hi Sehun, you clean up nicely." Sehun smiled and ran a hand through his hair.

"Only on my day offs and on Fridays. I won't be able to stay though, I already have a photography project due on Monday, so have a fun practice without me." He explained and opened the door wider for them to enter. "Hey Luhan. I like your shirt, it compliments your eyes."

Baekhyun walked in first, but turned around to find a pink and flustered Luhan was followed behind him whilst staring at the floor. "You okay, Luhan? I know it's not my business, but you talk to everyone in the room except Sehun."

Luhan slumped into the nearest chair, hunched over and rested his chin on his palm. "He's my ex-boyfriend. We didn't break up on good terms so it's still awkward around him and the fact that he still comes by here whenever he pleases doesn't help at all!" He groaned again and ruffled his hair. "And I hate how he just throws in random compliments out of no where, like what is he trying to do?!" Baekhyun was at a lost for words and just resulted in gently rubbing Luhan's shoulder. This whole time he thought that Luhan had a crush on Sehun and was just really shy; how wrong was he.

The door opened again and Yifan poked his head through before waving hello and fully entered in the room. Yixing followed close behind talking on the phone and speaking in mandarin. He smiled at Baekhyun Luhan before strolling over towards Junmyeon's desk where Junmyeon was also taking a phone call. The door had not fully closed yet and Kyungsoo walked through with Jongin trailing behind him.

"Baekhyun!" Kyungsoo smiled. Baekhyun found calmness in his smile. He wasn't sure if it was his heart shaped lips or maybe it was because he has been really nice and warm since they met. Kyungsoo pulled up a seat and sat next to Baekhyun. Jongin glanced at Baekhyun and gave a half smile as he walked over to sit next to Yifan. He watched him pull up a seat and then scanned the room. There was no sight of Chanyeol. Was he that disappointed in Baekhyun? If that was the case, he felt an extreme wave of guilt.

"Okay everyone, Chanyeol might be late because he's placed in after school detention today. We still have practice, but it won't be for too long because I have a family get-together." Junmyeon spoke, hanging up the phone.

Oh my god, okay. Baekhyun exhaled and relaxed in his seat. The last thing he wanted was for Chanyeol to isolate himself away from E-KOM because of something he did. But was Chanyeol okay with him being apart of the group? Even after praising him after singing, the air was still thick around them. He understood why he would be angry with him, but there were still parts of Baekhyun that he wasn't comfortable sharing yet.

"Baekhyun, let's do vocal exercises together." Luhan placed a hand on his shoulder breaking him away from his thoughts.

He could just stop here. He could leave E-KOM to just focus on school and to not be a burden on Junmyeon. He looked up at Luhan who was smiling at him and Baekhyun had never wanted to be apart of something so bad. Everyone in the room was always having a good time. They treated each other like a family and their bond was like no other. Everyone was happy and Baekhyun wanted to share the same happiness he believed he deserved.

He patted Luhan's hand and smiled.

"Okay."

"Did you all learn your lesson?" Mr. Han said to the students who were in after school detention which, of course, included Chanyeol.

"Yes." They murmured.

"If you are all late one more time to my class, it's a week detention."

"Yes."

"Okay, you are all free to go--Chanyeol, can you take the cloths to the auditorium?" Mr. Han asked pointing to the basket filled with multi-colored wash cloths. Chanyeol wanted to roll his eyes and decline, but he in a breath and nodded his head silently.

Everything after receiving after school detention went horribly. He took a nap during the lunch period which resulted in him rushing into his next class, almost receiving another days worth of detention. Going into his final class, he thought he was prepared to take a quiz--wrong. Everything he studied for wasn't on the quiz and he was so sure that he bombed it. Detention wasn't a walk in the park either; mopping the cafeteria, putting away the physical education equipment and then washing and drying the cloths that were stored in the auditorium's back room. Junmyeon had also texted him saying he didn't need to come to practice because they were ending early and going to practice was probably the only thing to make him feel a bit better.

He watched his classmates leave as he lifted the basket and dragged his feet across campus. There was no doubt that today was absolute . All he wanted to go home, ask his mother to make a hearty dinner, take a nice cold shower, and drift off to sleep.

The thought of waking up around ten o'clock on a Saturday almost made him want to cry. He desperately needed to catch up on his sleep, but nope, Junmyeon scheduled a practice room cleanup. At times like these he needed to talk to his dad or play video games with Luhan to help calm his nerves and keep his mind off of useless anger. He needed something, anything to turn his day around.

"!" Chanyeol cursed loudly. He dropped the basket on the tiles of the back room and raked a hand through his crimson locks. "Why is today so ty?!" He yelled hoping to have an answer, but silence was what he got in return. Chanyeol let out a shaky breath before gripping the handle to exit. The faint sound of the grand piano stopped him in his tracks.

At first, he thought it was a ghost or a phantom that was playing the piano in the auditorium, but he shook those childish thoughts away. He built up the courage to turn around and open the door that lead right to the stage.

He opened the door slowly, hoping not to frighten who--or whatever was playing. He squinted at the figure sitting before the piano and almost instantly, he recognized the silhouette.

Raven hair, slender fingers and those worn out converse sneakers he wore everyday to school. Chanyeol leaned against the door frame and stared at his profile. After knowing Luhan for his whole life, he had the mindset of him having the most perfect facial structure and features; wrong again.

Chanyeol stared at Baekhyun who looked like he was having the time of his life. He could see the curve of his lips and he could feel his own lips twitch upward. There was only one light that was on in the auditorium and it shined on Baekhyun making Chanyeol feel light headed. He was lost in the angelic presence that illuminated off of Baekhyun, but he wasn't prepared for the moment when Baekhyun's lips parted and the same sultry voice escaped.

His voice.

Chanyeol closed his eyes and allowed the sound of Baekhyun singing surround him. His shoulders felt lighter and his whole body relaxed against the door frame. It was like a lullaby that was made for Chanyeol; Baekhyun's voice not the song. He felt at peace and everything that he thought about Baekhyun was erased completely.

Ever since Baekhyun missed the day he was supposed to sing, Chanyeol did not want to accept Baekhyun into the group anymore. After being in the group for a year, Junmyeon was already used to Chanyeol's tardiness and shenanigans so Chanyeol did not any of the other members to follow his actions. He almost believed that Baekhyun had no passion or drive to be a part of the group, let alone sing, but drinking in his aura and facial expression made his mind make a 180.

Baekhyun eyes were closed and there was still a passionate smile as he sang his heart away. His fingers pressed the piano keys as if he was touching the most valuable item on earth, it made Chanyeol wonder if Baekhyun touched everything he loved that way. The thought immediately raised his body temperature and he had to slap his hand over his mouth to suppress the breath of air he dared to release. If he made one sound, he was scared Baekhyun would stop singing, turn around and it would be all over for Chanyeol. So he stood there, watching him like they were the last two people on earth.

The way Baekhyun's voice became softer and the melody of the piano began to fade, Chanyeol knew that his lullaby was going to end soon. Before Baekhyun could open his eyes and lift his head away from the piano, Chanyeol slipped out unnoticed.

His footsteps were quick and heavy walking towards the parking lot. The members were already comfortable and welcoming towards Baekhyun and it wasn't fair to him that Chanyeol had doubts about him. Unlocking his car and sliding into the driver's seat, he sighed and clutched the steering wheel.

There was passion in the way the boy sang and played the piano, so much passion that it almost brought tears to his eyes. He swore to himself that he was going to apologize and start over with Baekhyun because he deserved that much.

Chanyeol scrunched his nose and drove off with sweaty palms, bright red cheeks and never ending images of the sweetest look on Baekhyun's face.
