Jung Daehyun.

Thank You, Dr. Jung

A/N: I have an author's note before and after this time- sorry if I'm boring you guys TT^TT. I decided to write a part two because all of my lovely subbies asked so nicely for it hehe. But anyways, I have a contest of some sorts <3? All you have to do is make fanart/a poster/a spinoff/a poem/a playlist of songs, or really anything creative that has to do with this story! The winners will receive my love, a heartfelt message from me thanking them for their support, and I'll also mention them in the epilogue <3 The contest will be open as long as people read this fanfic haha~ you might just not get mentioned in the epilogue if you submit something late ;^; sorry for the long author's note. THANK YOU, AND PLEASE ENJOY THE DAEJAE~!

DISCLAIMER: I do not own Jung Daehyun or Yoo Youngjae. I do own this story and plotline though, so please no plagiarism! Thank you~!

It was finally Friday. Youngjae waited six WHOLE days for it to be Friday again. Why is Friday so important, you ask? Friday was the day of Youngjae’s weekly check-up, which meant he would also be seeing his one and only best friend.

“Mom! Is Dr. Jung here yet?” the pale boy asked excitedly, causing his mother to chuckle softly. It had been years since she had seen him this happy.

Youngjae’s mother turned to her son, patting his head softly. “Not yet, dear. I’ll go check again, if you want,” she said with a smile. Lately, the Yoo household had been much happier because of the young doctor’s presence. Although Youngjae was extremely cranky six out of the seven days of the week, it was plain to see that he had a warm glow to his face when he talked about how amazing his doctor was.

Before Mrs.Yoo could even take a step to the doorway, the sound of a lock clicking open was heard, causing Youngjae to shoot up from his bed to sit upright. “Youngjae! I brought a treat for you!” a familiar, manly voice shouted from somewhere outside of the room. Younjae bit his lower lip gently to control his excitement as he listened to the front door of the house slam shut and soft footsteps approach his room.

“I’ll leave you two alone then,” Youngjae’s mother said before opening the door and greeting the doctor who bowed deeply to her in the hallway.

“Good morning, Mrs. Yoo.” The tone in Daehyun’s voice turned from playful to professional as he greeted his patient’s mother with respect. Youngjae’s mother returned his greeting with a polite hello before stating that she had matters to attend to, then leaving the room swiftly.

Daehyun closed the door to Youngjae’s room carefully before turning to look at the boy whom he’d been waiting to see for quite a while. He didn’t want to admit it out loud, but Yoo Youngjae was without a doubt his favorite patient to visit; the ill boy never failed to make him smile.

As soon as he saw the smile on the younger boy’s face, Daehyun’s facade broke immediately. “How have you been? Is anything hurting?” the doctor blurted out, immediately rushing to his patient’s side. Youngjae laughed softly at the clumsy side of the doctor he managed to coax out after a couple of visits. It had been a couple months since Youngjae started being visited by his new doctor, but they were by far the best months of his entire life.

“I’m feeling much better, don’t worry!” Youngjae said, a soft smile gracing his delicate features. It was true; he had been feeling very energetic as of lately, although he knew that he if he was too active, he might overwork his heart or lungs and feel weak again.

The doctor nodded before moving to grab his bag and place it on Youngjae’s bed. “Good. I’ll examine you in a minute, but first I brought you a treat for being such a good patient,” Daehyun beamed at the boy happily, showing him a pint of chocolate ice cream that he had just retrieved from his bag along with a metal spoon.

Youngjae’s eyes widened to the size of saucers; he had never seen ice cream in person before. Instead of thanking the doctor, a high pitched squeak escaped the boy’s throat as he launched himself into Daehyun’s arms, hugging him happily.

The tan boy swore his heart skipped a beat as Youngjae nuzzled into his slightly muscular arms. He gently ruffled the younger boy’s neatly combed hair, giving it a more childish look. The pair didn’t stay in this position for long, though, because Youngjae really wanted to try this “ice cream” thing that he’s been dreaming of.

“I’ve never had ice cream before,” the frail boy said, his voice full of excitement as his fingers fumbled to remove the lid. Daehyun gawked at his patient, continuing to stare until Youngjae carefully pushed the man’s chin up to close his mouth. “Don’t make fun of me… My mom just said it was bad for my health!” he said with a pout, taking the metal spoon from the doctor harshly in frustration.

Daehyun snapped out of his state of shock, shaking his head and reaching out to gently pinch Youngjae’s slightly chubby cheeks. “Aigoooo~ Stop complaining and just eat, you little chipmunk!” the doctor said, causing his patient’s cheeks to turn as red as a tomato. Youngjae nodded furiously, stuffing a large spoonful of chocolate ice cream into his mouth to hide his slight embarrassment from the doctor’s comments.

Youngjae gasped as the creamy, cold substance touched his taste buds. He closed his eyes as his face scrunched up in bliss, trying to savor the flavor for as long as he could. “Dr. Jung, it’s so delicious….” he sighed happily before scooping some more ice cream into his mouth. The doctor smiled and stood up to wash his hands before starting the examination.

“If you’re feeling okay, then I can take you outside for a while after your check up. And by the way, I told you to call me Daehyun, didn’t I?” the tanned man said, his lips turned down in a teasing frown. Youngjae nodded excitedly, continuing to stuff his mouth with ice cream even as the doctor prepared his supplies,

“I haven’t been outside in years! I don’t think I’ve been anywhere other than this room and the bathroom since I was a kid, actually…” Youngjae said, his tone quickly turning sad. The doctor frowned and took Youngjae’s free hand, placing two fingers onto the vein in his wrist to check his patient’s pulse.

“I’ll take you to the park across the street. We can even feed the ducks there!” the doctor mumbled loudly, knowing very well that Youngjae stared at the park everyday from the large window in his room, the only thing making his plain white room seem not as bland.

Youngjae smiled brightly, nodding in agreement as the doctor removed his fingers to record his patient’s heart rate in a small notebook. He easily finished the pint of ice cream as Daehyun continued to conduct various tests on his patient, making sure that Youngjae was fit to go outside. The pale boy let the room fall into a silence that wasn’t awkward but instead full of unspoken emotions, emotions that were expressed in secretive gazes and touches that lingered a bit too long to be considered professional.

“Wow! Look at all the people!” Youngjae exclaimed, looking around the street as Daehyun pushed him across the crosswalk in his wheelchair that was hardly ever used. Youngjae’s mother didn’t like to take him outside much because she was afraid that something terrible would happen to her already frail son, but she trusted Daehyun and thought he was qualified to protect her beloved child from any danger.

“Jae, it’s not very polite to stare,” Daehyun reprimanded the younger boy, laughing softly at the childish side of Youngjae that only he got to see and continued to push his wheelchair towards the park. Youngjae’s cheeks were dusted with pink at the use of the nickname, but he ignored it, insteading huffing softly and looking at his bare feet.

Youngjae convinced the young doctor to allow him to go to the park without shoes, but only after the latter inspected his feet over five times to assure that there were no cuts or open wounds that could possibly get infected. He really wanted to feel the grass between his toes, at least once in his lifetime.

“Ta-dah!” Daehyun exclaimed, stepping in front of the boy in the wheelchair to break him out of his thoughts. Youngjae looked around, smiling silently with watery eyes as he surveyed the park. There were children on the playground, old couples sitting on benches, ducks in the pond, and, last but not least, Jung Daehyun, in the flesh, right in front of his eyes.

“Y-youngjae? Are you having allergies? What’s wrong?” the doctor panicked, stumbling over to the side of the wheelchair and kneeling down in the dirt beside it. He didn’t care if he dirtied his pants and white doctor’s coat beyond repair; Youngjae was crying. HIS Youngjae was crying. Daehyun reached out and ran his thumbs across the waterline of Youngjae’s eyes to wipe away the tears that were about to spill down the latter’s cheek, causing Youngjae’s lip to tremble slightly.

Youngjae smiled and sniffled softly before shaking his head and looking directly into the doctor’s deep, brown eyes. “I’m just really happy, that’s all,” he whispered, causing the older man to break out into a smile. Daehyun reluctantly pulled his hands away, standing up and brushing the dirt and small pieces of gravel off his slacks.

“In that case, let’s go feed the ducks? I brought some bread… but we can’t feed them too much or they’ll get sick!” the doctor rambled, feeling his cheeks heat up as a result of the intense gaze his patient directed his way. Youngjae nodded in agreement, gently wrapping his fingers around the armrests of his wheelchair while trying to contain the soft giggles that attempted to escape his throat whenever the doctor blushed.

Daehyun’s lips curled up into a smile as he began to slowly push the wheelchair along the path to the pond full of ducks. He couldn’t help but admire the frail boy who was trying to catch some falling flower petals in his hands excitedly, as if it was the first time he had ever seen a cherry blossom. Daehyun felt like he was the lead in a cheesy drama made for old ladies. He didn’t want to admit it, but he definitely brought Youngjae to the park because wanted to and not because it was his obligation as a doctor.

As soon as the wheelchair came to a stop in the picnic area beside the pond, Youngjae turned around with cupped hands to show his doctor all of the flowers he managed to catch on the way. “Look! I caught you a bunch of flowers!” he said proudly, biting his tongue instantly once he noticed his strange choice of words.

Daehyun was smart though; after all, he was a doctor. He didn’t miss the “you” that Youngjae had accidentally blurted out. The boy with the tanned skin chuckled softly, looking down at his patient. He tenderly placed his hands underneath Youngjae’s cupped ones, allowing his palms to graze the back of the younger boy’s hands lightly. “They’re beautiful. Small and frail looking, but beautiful all the same.”

Youngjae tensed up as he instantly was able to decipher the older’s hidden message, slowly relaxing his fingers until the flowers and petals were able to slowly fall through the gaps and into Daehyun’s palms. The patient smiled softly, his pink lips creating a soft arch on his face. “Keep those. Now let’s go feed the ducks. Maybe if I hold out some food, they’ll come near us!” Youngjae said, breaking their short moment of silence.

Daehyun laughed as he pocketed the flowers, reaching into the back pocket of the wheelchair to get out the plastic bag full of stale bread crumbs. Yoo Youngjae was so cute. Daehyun knew who the real Youngjae was. Not the quiet, introverted one, but the dorky Youngjae who dreamed of princes and castles. The Youngjae who blurted out everything he felt and constantly changed the subject because he thought of himself as too boring. Daehyun was intrigued by this Youngjae.

“Here you go,” the doctor said, opening the bag full of crumbs for the boy and setting it gently into his lap. Youngjae chirped a soft thank you before leaning from his wheelchair to hold a flat palmful of bread crumbs for a family of pigeons that was passing by.

“Youngjae, those aren’t ducks, you know,” the doctor stifled his laughter by covering his mouth with the back of his hand. Youngjae nodded, continuing to feed the hungry birds with more bread crumbs.

“I know, it’s just that these birds look so sad. They need love too. The ducks get fed because they are cute, but the pigeons are chased away because they’re dull colored,” the pale boy explained, handing a palmful of crumbs to the doctor that was standing next to his wheelchair. Daehyun smiled and crouched down quietly as to not scare away the birds and held out his hand. He chuckled softly as a pigeon hungrily pecked at the crumbs on his palms, greedy for the food that the man offered.

The duo stayed like that for a while, feeding the birds and conversing every so often. They didn’t feel the need to talk to fill the silence, as somehow they were able to understand each other by just staying beside one another and feeding the birds.

Once Daehyun’s legs had begun to get sore from crouching and the bread crumbs had all disappeared, the sun had started to sink in the sky. “Can we… make one last stop before you go home?” Youngjae muttered, almost inaudibly. Daehyun smiled and reached out to ruffle the younger boy’s hair slightly. He knew that Youngjae would ask this. The boy had been so persistent to come to the park barefoot because he wanted to feel grass. Daehyun wasn’t cruel enough to deny the boy of a thing that he longed for the most.

“Of course. I’ll bring you there,” the doctor said, wanting the day to last forever. He carefully unlocked the wheels of Youngjae’s wheelchair and slowly pushed the chair down the path to the field of the park that could be seen from the ill boy’s window. Daehyun hummed softly to a tune that was meant for just the two of them. Youngjae let his eyes close as he savored the moment that they shared together, a smile painted across his face throughout the entire trip to the field.

The wheelchair came to a slow stop, and the patient opened his eyes slowly, blinking a few times. There was the tree that he’d been staring at for so many years. There was the green grass that he so badly wanted to touch. There was Jung Daehyun, the one who made his heart beat erratically but also ache longingly.

Knowing fully well that Youngjae could not walk on his own, the doctor kneeled down in front of the wheelchair and took the boy’s hand in his. He brought the pale, frail hand up to his face and brushed his lips against the warm skin. Daehyun released Youngjae’s hand, afraid that he had made a wrong move, but within a few seconds, he mustered up his courage and extended his hand out for the boy.

“Yoo Youngjae, may I have this dance?” the doctor said sincerely. His soft eyes filled with an emotion Youngjae couldn’t put a name on pierced through his heart as Daehyun’s words rang in his ears. Everything Youngjae wanted to say at the moment was stuck in his throat; only silence escaped his lips each time him parted them, leaving a red-cheeked Youngjae gawking at his doctor. After an agonizingly long 30 seconds, Youngjae gave up on speaking. He placed his smaller hand on top of Daehyun’s larger one, causing the tanned boy to break out into a smile.

The doctor continued to hold onto the boy’s hand as he stood up, holding out his other hand for Youngjae to take as support. The patient grasped onto both of Daehyun’s hands tightly, shakily setting his feet one at a time onto the grass. He wiggled his toes slightly at the foreign sensation before continuing the task at hand. Youngjae planted his feet firmly onto the ground, using Daehyun’s hands to pull himself up painfully slow.

“That’s it. You’ve got it,” Daehyun murmured reassuringly as he held onto the boy’s hands. Youngjae was completely up, although he was wobbling slightly and looked as if he would fall at any second. It had been so long since he had tried to walk; his mother usually hired people to carry him from the bathroom to his bed.

A tear rolled down Youngjae’s cheek before he collapsed into the elder boy’s arms, not because he couldn’t stand, but because of how much Daehyun meant to him. He might not have had the strength to live anymore if he hadn’t met the amazing doctor.

Daehyun smiled as he caught his patient in his arms, keeping him upright by pulling him to his chest and hugging him securely. The pair swayed together slowly, with Daehyun humming their own special tune. The sun had already begun to set, and the sky had turned a hazy scarlet. Youngjae couldn’t help but smile as he got to feel the grass underneath his toes for the first time, and as he felt his heart beat in sync with the doctor that had made his life worth living. Caught up in the moment, Youngjae didn’t even realize when Daehyun had stopped swaying them and instead looked at Youngjae straight in the eye.

The doctor brought one hand up, using the other to hold Youngjae close to him, and cupped the boy’s cheek delicately, it softly with his thumb. At this point, Daehyun didn’t care if Youngjae slapped him; he needed to tell him. The tanned boy trailed his thumb from Youngjae’s cheek down to his jaw, leading to his lips. Daehyun traced the bottom of the boy’s lower lip with his fingertip before whispering softly for only Youngjae to hear.

“I love you.” Youngjae’s heart pounded within his chest, and he suddenly felt all tingly inside. He gasped softly for air, trying to fill his lungs with oxygen to ease his erratic heartbeat. Daehyun looked at the younger boy, his face filled with panic. He didn’t regret what he said, but he didn’t want Youngjae to leave him.

Youngjae placed his palm over Daehyun’s hand that was resting by his lips, guiding it back up to his cheek and holding it there.

“I love you too, Jung Daehyun,” Youngjae smiled as he felt warm lips press against his, tears streaming down his face as if his eyes were the mouth of a waterfall. And thank you, Dr. Jung. Thank you for making me able to live without regrets and die without them too.

I'm sitting here while crying. This just broke my heart apart. I started to read the first chapter as a pastimes. I should study for an exame but study is boring~ As soon I know how this story could end I started to listen to a few songs in my first language (German) and I think those songs just made this little fanfiction even better than it already is. I would feel honored if you would listen to them. I searched for english lyrics so you could understand it :)

Here would be the link to the playlist:
