PART 2

While You Were Away

Before Chorong left for London National University in United Kingdom, she had made a deal with Bomi; and that was to actively keep in contact. Both side agreed to constantly keep in touch with other. They agreed to call or video call alternately between each other.
Bomi thought that it was best for her to tell Chorong her feelings before it's too late. Bomi had come up with different scenarios in her head, just to prepare herself in case things don’t go as planned. Just at the thought of confessing made Bomi's heart flutters.

~
It was 3 am in Korea and Bomi was sleeping soundly when her phone starts to ring. Frustrated at whoever who was calling her 3 in the morning, Bomi took her phone from her side table and simply press the phone's side button to silent it. She then tossed her phone on the bed and continues to sleep. 2 minutes later, the vibration from Bomi's phone distributed her sleep again.
Bomi had no choice but to check who was calling. Her sleepy droopy eyes became wide-eyed as she read her caller ID.

Chorongie - was flashing on her screen.

She quickly slides the answer button and greeted Chorong with the brightest morning voice ever.
"Were you asleep Bbomi-ah?" Chorong asked judging from Bomi's voice.
"Yah, its 3am here in Korea what were you expecting me to do? Study?" Bomi mocked Chorong.
"It's 3am?! I must have calculated it wrongly then. I thought it was still midnight there" Chorong replied apologetically.

"At least it was you, if it was someone else who called me at 3am, I would have skin them alive" Bomi attempted to lighten up the conversation.

"You're still the same old grumpy Bomi aren't you?"

"You're only gone for 2 days so far. Stop talking as if you're away for 2 years.

"I know, Bbomi. I just reached my dorm and everyone here all looks so unfriendly. I already miss you Bbomi" Chorong's forlorn voice could be heard clearly.

One part of Bomi was upset that Chorong had to go through all this alone, that she was lonely and friendless. Bomi should have been there as well, together with her best friend. Going through the difficult times together yet another part of her was also grateful because of the difficult situation Chorong was in, she would always think of Bomi.
Or so Bomi thought........

~

“Why is your hand phone bill so expensive, Yoon Bomi?” Mrs Yoon barged into Bomi’s room with the bill in her hand. Bomi knew her mother would find out sooner or later. She tried to reason out with her mom but to no avail.

“B-but we already promised-“

“You can call her once in a while but not every day Bomi. Overseas calls are very expensive. If you’re going to keep this up, I have to confiscate your phone. Do you understand?”

Bomi nods her head apologetically. It was never her intension to go against her mom, but looking at the situation, Bomi was desperate.

Every night, she craves to hear Chorong’s soft-spoken voice, the same voice that makes her forget her problems.

~

As time passes by, Chorong was getting busier with school. Bomi also was occupied with project works. Their conversation on the phone was getting shorter and shorter, not only because of the school work but also the huge time difference between the two countries. Both of them were equally tired with school and getting up at 3am in the morning was just something they could only imagine. The plan of Bomi confessing was also getting flushed away as opportunities were just flying by.

It was a Saturday evening where Bomi was taking a break from doing her very frustrating report when she received an overseas call. She picked up the call from her phone.

“Bomi-ah. It’s me Chorong. It’s been so long since I last hear your voice.”

“I know right. We both have been so busy with school. How are you?”

“I’m fine. I just miss my family and friends back in Korea. I miss my Yoon Bomi especially.”

“I miss you too Chorong-ah.”

For the next minute, there was just an awkward silence.

“Just exactly how longed have we contact each other. We have nothing in common to talk about now.” Chorong broke the silence.

“It’s been a really long time but hey, it was nobody’s fault. We both have been very busy with school and the time difference is really huge. Calling each other every day is not as convenient as it seems.”

“But you promised me you would do so, no matter how tiring it will be.” Chorong whines.

“I know but it’s not as if I’m purposely doing so.” Bomi’s voice raised a little, sounding annoyed at the same time.

Chorong was taken aback at Bomi’s response. She was sad that Bomi felt irritated while talking to her when they haven’t been keeping contact for so long.

“I guess it must have been annoying to talk to me right? I’m sorry if I disturbed you. Call me again when you feel like talking to me.” Chorong was about to end the call when she heard Bomi’s reply.

“It’s not that it’s annoying, but I’m very stressed out with my report and all.”

“Then you shouldn’t have taken it out on me. All I wanted to hear your voice. Like I said, call me again when you feel less stressed out.” Chorong immediately ended the call before she hears Bomi’s excuses again.

Tears were rolling down Chorong’s cheeks as she thought to herself whether the words she said were too harsh. “She’s not the only one who’s having a hard time,” Chorong said to herself, feeling devastated at the thought of it.

-

The next few weeks were silent for both of them. Bomi took the time to reflect on her actions. Neither of them wanted to take the initiative to contact first. Chorong thought that it was only right for Bomi to call her back. They both never have fought so badly, to the point that it feels like they’re strangers.

“She’ll call again.” Chorong reminded herself.

-

Chorong was having her lunch alone in the cafeteria. Yes, even after a few months in, she still couldn’t make proper friends. She quietly cursed herself for being such an introvert. As she was gulping down her meal, she heard her named being called out. She quickly dismissed it as she thought she heard wrongly.

“Chorong?” It was clearer and more obvious now.

She puts down her spoon on her tray and turned her head towards the direction of the voice. A natural smile formed on her face. She couldn’t help but to jolt up from her seat and offer a handshake.

“Jjong oppa!” Chorong squeals.

It was Jonghyun that Chorong saw. Her eyes almost couldn’t believe it. Not only was he the first Korean student she met in campus, but Jonghyun also was a friend she knew back in Korea. In fact, Jonghyun was Chorong’s ex. They decided to end their 3 years relationship because Jonghyun needed to attend a university overseas and both of them just couldn’t bear with long distance relationship. They had their break-up maturely and have been maintaining their close friendship ever since.

Jonghyun puts down his meal on the table where Chorong was sitting and accepted her handshake. Jonghyun also couldn’t stop smiling. Feels like it was just yesterday they had lunch together.

“Is it okay if I eat lunch together with you?” Jonghyun asked.

“Of course it is! You even put down your meal on the table.” Chorong couldn’t help but let out a giggle. He was still the old Jonghyun that Chorong knew, what a witty guy.

“So, it’s your first here in university?” Jonghyun started the conversation as soon as they settled down.

“Yes. That means you’re in the second year right?”

“Not really. I took half semester break last year. So this year I’m basically restarting the whole of first year again.” Jonghyun said with a straight face.

Chorong was a little bewildered. Jonghyun was never the type to purposely skip school. He was smart due to his hardworking attitude.

“Oh,” was the only thing Chorong can come up with. “Can I ask why?” she added.

“Nothing much, dad was sick so I went back to Korea to check up on him.”

“I see. How is he now?”

“He passed away when I went back”

“I-I’m sorry for your loss. I shouldn’t have brought up this topic. Sorry.” Chorong almost lost her appetite. She couldn’t help but hated herself a little for making Jonghyun feel sad upon the first meeting they had in a long time.

“It wasn’t your fault. Don’t worry!” Jonghyun said cheerily, in an attempt to brighten up the atmosphere. “It’s been sometime already, I’ve got over it and I am happy now!” he added.

“That’s very nice to hear!” Chorong replied happily.

After their meal, Jonghyun accompanied Chorong to her dorm. Upon reaching her room, they exchanged number and bid each other goodbye.

The next few days, Chorong was only anticipating for Jonghyun’s call.

A/N: Heyyyyyyyy so sorry for the uber late update. I’ve been really busy with school and exams were one after the other. It was really tiring. Also sorry for dragging this story, I thought I could finish it in two shots, but clearly I can’t. So just bear with me a little longer. I have tons of ideas of what to write but I don’t have the liberty to sit down, sort out my ideas and started writing a story cuz SCHOOL IS JUST GETTING IN A WAY. I will try my best to update! Hopefully next chapter would be the last.

Ps I don’t ship Chorong and Jonghyun. Just so happen I needed a male character and Jonghyun made his solo album recently (not exactly) but totally loving his album man. You guys should check it out too~

Didn’t have time to check on the grammar and all, sorry if I made a mistake L

Till then! X.

Chapter 3: waa this was great!!^^ the long distance, the troubles with overseas calls, the jealousy misunderstanding taken care of quickly, and the way they've been strong in that time apart. Bomi was finally able to have that courage! and Chorong~ oh how she could be so witty and adapt that quickly. She must have known it too, and clearly she had thought about it before hehe. That person by her side <3 thank you for writing :))
