baekhyun raises a brow and rolls his eyes at the unfamiliar sight of his boyfriend using an emoticon, soft laugh escaping past his lips as he puts his mobile away in his red jacket’s pocket. having a long distance relationship wasn’t easy at all – in fact, baekhyun would name it a very challenging adventure instead -, but he could manage. the two met approximately one year and two months ago in this chatting site and have been dating for about six months; what was only some frequent, casual talking back in the site turning into an exchange of skype names, and the exchange of skype names turned into an exchange of phone numbers.

the thing was, they knew almost nothing about each other – and that was the purpose of their relation. they treated each other by their nicknames for they didn’t know each other’s real names; they were left to imagination for they didn’t know what either looked like. it was a relation of blind trust for either a very good, or very bad surprise once they meet for the first time.

(baekhyun could hear the voices of his high school teachers warning about the dangers of the internet, and he knew he wasn’t going exactly the safest way about this relation – but he trusted shixun more than he probably should)

as for the date of their first meeting, they hadn’t decided yet, but as soon as possible was what baekhyun hoped most. they were both from seoul which made things a lot easier as well as a lot more exciting, for it only left baekhyun wondering at night if he has, by some chance of fate, crossed paths with his lover at some point before.

upon reaching his apartment, it only takes baekhyun the quick action of kicking out his shoes and dropping his house keys on the nearest table to pretty much fly all the way over to his bedroom, dropping in bed and opening his laptop lid (because he is a very responsible adult and clearly very responsible adults do this first-thing once they come home).

the loading of windows 7 seems to take forever, but the moment his desktop shows up (girls group wallpaper, unsurprisingly so) and the sound of skype logging in is heard, a way too childish grin gets plastered on baekhyun’s face as his eyes fall on the green bubble besides shixun’s name.

“yah, baekhyun!” the smile on baekhyun’s face is quickly replaced by a frown the moment sehun’s voice is heard, the taller’s hand giving a small but sharp smack on the back of baekhyun’s head. “hands off the phone, you’re working.”

“geez, off.” baekhyun groans, furrowed eyebrows fixed on his forehead as he moves his free hand to rub the back of his head, glaring holes in sehun’s figure. “it’s nine in the morning, no one comes to a library at nine in the morning. plus, there are others for the occasional lost old couple showing up, so.”

“so, you’re still paid to touch books and not cellphones.” sehun scolds, a small frown on his own features as he eyes the oversized phone in baekhyun’s hand. “plus, if you’re so desperately waiting for a text, i doubt you’ll get one. it’s too early to text idiots.”

baekhyun huffs and stands up at last from one of the small sofas scattered around the library, and if only looks could kill, sehun would most likely be reduced to ash by now. “you’re such a moron, you know that?”

sehun’s lips curl into a sarcastic, mocking smile and all baekhyun wished was to bury his fist in that face right there. “i don’t concern myself with the opinions of inferior people – quite literally.” he adds, mocking smile remaining as he eyes baekhyun from head to toe, given as the shorter wasn’t, well, as vertically blessed as sehun himself.

and baekhyun was this close to wrapping his hands around sehun’s neck when the tingling of the doorbell indicated the arrival of a customer. he looked behind his shoulder, noticing the woman walking in, and mumbled a mere ‘  you’ towards sehun before walking off to help her.

rain was pouring hard from the skies when baekhyun was finally off from work, drops hitting against the library’s windows in a way that could match baekhyun’s own angry mood – angry, one: because of sehun (always), two: he didn’t bring an umbrella and it was still a long walk back home.
with a sigh he pondered how worth it would be to run his way back home and arrive soaked to the bone feat chance of slipping halfway there, or if he should just accept his fate and stay behind in the library.

“geez,” sehun’s voice interrupts baekhyun’s thoughts and the shorter looks up, automatic frown on his face as that was his default being-met-with-sehun mode. “for how much longer do you plan on standing there looking like an abandoned pet?”

“—excuse me?” baekhyun’s frown turned into a glare, one that – unfortunately for baekhyun himself – sehun has learnt to ignore.

“you heard me.”

“well, first of all, that’s none of your business, and second of all—“

“you didn’t bring an umbrella, yeah. gotta be ing sherlock to figure that out.” sehun mocked, rolling his eyes at the shorter before huffing as well and reaching for the library’s door. “c’mon, i’ll walk you home.”

“i—wait, what?” a slight wave of surprise washed over baekhyun’s features, momentary widening of eyes, looking from sehun to the umbrella the taller held, before the frown was quickly back on his face. “um, no, i don’t need your—“

the streets were cold and baekhyun was shaking but it surely wasn’t due to the weather; one hand wrapped around his scarf for warmth and the other tightly holding the mobile phone in his hands, he quickly walked down the busy streets of seoul in the direction of the grand avenue. he could easily see already the christmas tree, standing proudly tall and lit in thousand colourful blinking lights that matched the rhythm of baekhyun’s heart.

after one hour of panic over having no clothes (despite his overflowing closet), four hours of intensive shopping, one long bath, three hours of make-up and an extra half-an-hour of further anxiety, he was finally ready to face the world and go meet his not-so-long-distance boyfriend.

(he really wasn’t, but confidence is key.)

a couple more of steps and he found himself in said avenue, squeezing through the crowd of couples and tripping over the snow covering the pavement.
his heart was pretty much ready to jump out of his throat in the grossest of ways as baekhyun walked closer to the majestic christmas tree, hand gripping the phone so hard it was a wonder the screen didn’t shatter.

feeling rather too awkward to stand in the middle, he moved towards the left side and with a heavy exhale, unlocked his phone.

quickly raising his gaze, baekhyun was quick to scan the crowd in front of him. there were many heads, many boys and many of them holding phones of their own – the fact that one of them could very well be shixun had baekhyun’s hands shaking miserably.

he also spotted sehun by the trees; it made him raise an eyebrow in thought of what the other could possibly be doing out there, but he ignored it and concentrated back on his mobile.

there was a feeling akin to a different, worse kind of anxiety starting to pool in the pits of his stomach and baekhyun only took his staring off sehun when he felt the mobile vibrate in his hands again.

with a deep breath, baekhyun started walking forwards.

he kept his gaze down, heart drumming, hands shaking, anxiety building – and when he thought he was more of less by the middle and finally looked up, he could swear he felt his heart drop.

sehun stood two or three steps in front of him, phone in his hand, gaze in his own. the two eyed each other with a knowing gaze, one that felt a little too heartbreaking and baekhyun was sure he never felt this conflicted before in his whole life.
he kinda wanted to run away and he really wanted to go back in time and cancel this meeting, but despite everything, his feet stayed glued to the ground and after a short silence that felt painfully long, he decided to break the silence and end any left doubt. “…shixun?”

sehun pressed his lips together in a thin line and he seemed to consider and reconsider his reply a few times, before forcing up a small smile. “terrible pronunciation, but.. yeah.”

“oh.”

“yeah.”

baekhyun’s gaze faltered to the ground once more and his grip on the phone loosened. suddenly he wasn’t shaking anymore, but the beating of his heart remained high.
baekhyun had thought of every possible case scenario for their first meeting, but never, ever did he ever think the person that daily annoys him most would be the same that comforts him over skype messages.

“you’re disappointed.”

sehun’s voice catches his attention and baekhyun looks back up; he feels slightly dizzy, and only now does he notice there’s snow falling from the sky. “w.. what?”

“well.. i’m not your first choice of a prince charming, i know that for sure.” sehun said, shrugging his shoulder as his gaze kept faltering between the christmas tree and baekhyun’s features. there was a certain mask of indifference he was trying to keep up yet there was a hint of cracking in his voice baekhyun was sure he never saw in the other before. “you’re unhappy and i’m conflicted and i guess this is it.”

“so.. we’re breaking up?”

“if you want to.”

“i don’t know what i want.”

sehun stares. baekhyun sighs.

“i love shixun—and if you’re him, i guess i love you too?” he says, and sehun leans in slightly to hear him better because this wasn’t a movie and sadly the background voices couldn’t be muffled. “i know we kinda.. hate each other a lot, but.. i guess now that we know there are other sides to us besides the one at work- it can be different- i mean--.. does this make sense?” he laughs rather dryly, sighing before continuing. “what i mean to say is.. i want to try. i want to try again- for us.”

“…for us.” sehun smiles, free hand moving to find baekhyun’s gloved one and slowly, almost shyly so intertwining their fingers. baekhyun finds himself smiling back, and suddenly the world doesn’t feel so heavy anymore. “it may get difficult, but if you’re willing to try, i am too.”

baekhyun smiled a little wider, and although it still felt awkward, and definitely quite strange, he leaned in closer to the taller. he longed to spend christmas eve night in his boyfriend’s arms – that was what he was going to do.

sehun gently wrapped his arms around baekhyun’s smaller frame, slowly leaning their foreheads together. they eyed each other with quickly blinking eyes and faltering gazes, and it was awkward, so terribly awkward – but when sehun’s lips finally pressed against baekhyun’s own, it didn’t feel gross, nor bad, nor downright disgusting.

it felt right.

“this is so weird.” sehun snorted into the kiss and baekhyun started laughing, the two of them quickly leaning back although a smile remained plastered on both their features.

“i know. god.” the shorter chuckled, head shaking slightly as he lightly bumped his head on sehun’s chest. “we’re gonna have to practice this.”

“yeah,” sehun laughed as well, softly rocking from side to side with baekhyun in his arms. he squeezed the boy a little, and leaning down once more, pressed a kiss on the side of baekhyun’s head. “merry christmas, byuntae.”

baekhyun smiled in amusement over his own nickname and maybe, just maybe, this wouldn’t actually be so mad. “merry christmas, shixun.”

“—you still should totally wear those stockings for me though.”
