Midnight After Four Years
11:56
It had been a long week for Zitao, and all he desperately wanted was to curl up into his hotel sheets and sleep forever.
[Because if he slept forever, would they be in his dreams?
Waiting for him to make his reappearance, to come home to them.
Or would they decide he was no longer important and leave him to sit by himself in the meadow.]
So Zitao didn't know why he was walking around Seoul, he wasn't even sure where he was. His feet just seemed to carry him wherever he needed to be.
[All he wanted was home.
Where he could cuddle someone and whisper words that would never be repeated. Secrets carried until the grave, and warm embraces that were always better than sleeping alone.
And if he slept, could he please sleep forever?]
Zitao recognized the streets he was walking, but it had been too long. His memory didn't retain the place.
Unless it was a memory he had stored under lock and key in the back of his mind for rainy days like this.
[ But if he slept forever, and they weren't there, there wasn't a point.
The only reason he slept anymore was to see them again.
His family.
His friends.
His promised forevers.]
When Zitao's feet stopped outside a dimly lit cafe, he remembered the street.
He remembered why he was here.
[Because maybe if he fell asleep here forever, they would definitely be in his dreams.]
He was surprised when he saw his forgotten forevers sitting at one table in the corner.
Zitao thought he was dreaming again until the giant at the end beckoned him [with words and they never spoke in his slumber] to sit with him.
Maybe he didn't need to sleep tonight.
