CHAPTER 1: The First Smile

Or So I Thought

F R E S H M A N   Y E A R

[High School]

At exactly 5 in the morning, a very annoying sound started ringing loudly that woke up a not so amused 13 year old girl from her slumber. Grabbing her phone from the bedside table, Kaila stabbed a finger on her mobile’s screen to shut the stupid alarm. After a good ten minutes of sulking in her warm sheets and staring at the ceiling, she groggily stood up and went to the restroom and did her normal morning routine.

Whyyyy? Whyyy? That single word kept on drifting inside Kaila’s little head. Can I just not go to school? Really. Ugggh. The teen thinks to herself and sighs inwardly. This is a normal thing for her to do. Every single morning, she questions the world- why must she go to school? Suffer for 10 hours at school, go home, do homework- and when she says work it means work- she usually stays up until early morning before going to bed only to wake up within a few hours. She doesn’t even consider herself a human anymore for she runs around every single day with only 4 hours of sleep max. She’s lucky to get 5. And she’d be super lucky if that was the case… and it rarely happens. But then again what would you expect when you’re going to one of the most highly respected high school in your town. Who says high school was easy, huh? Even though Kaila was still in her Freshman year, it wasn’t a walk in the park. More like amazing race, if Kaila would put it in her own words describing what was school life like. Being a student at Seoul Science High School had its perks but she couldn’t even feel those so called “perks”. To cut things short- she was screwed.

Kaila stood for the 2nd time in front of the mirror to check her uniform. Twisting, pulling, and straightening here and there. She had a pretty normal looking uniform. White blouse, green with white stripes skirt that ran until just below her knee, white socks, black shoes, and oh- the ever supposedly “cute” ribbon hanging above her chest, tied quite loosely but tight enough around her neck so that it won’t fall off. There. I look normal enough. I think. With one last glance the girl went out of her room ready to face the worl---

“Kaila Park! Breakfast is ready and you’re going to be late if you don’t hurry up! Must we do this every single day?” A voice screaming from below cut the girl’s train of thought.

“Yes mom! I know! I’m comiiiiiiiing!” Kaila shouted back as she was running down the stairs.

“You didn’t need to shout, mom. Geez” the girl said to the lady wearing a pair of green garden gloves when she entered the dining area.

“Well, good morning to you too. Now hurry up and eat.” her mom simply replied. The girl pursed her lips, biting back a retort and just simply sat down on one of the chairs surrounding the table.

“I said eat” her mom sternly said, peering from the other side of the door frame before completely disappearing. Just when she was about to place food on her plate, yet another annoying ring from a mechanical device irritated the girl than she already was. Ugh. Knowing oh so well what their doorbell sounds like, it was time to go to school. Kaila quickly ran upstairs and entered the master bedroom to kiss her sleeping father goodbye, then comes back down again to grab her stuff. Before completely going outside of the house, the girl stopped by their garden to kiss her mother’s damp cheek. Woah. Mom’s really into this garden thingy. Kaila then climbed inside the car and sat snugly on the back seat and let it take her away from the comforts of her own home.

It only takes 15 minutes for her to get to school. Even though her school was relatively near her house, she was still fetched to and from it. This was how it was always been ever since she started schooling. What would you expect from a strict father, eh? At least her dad wasn’t the one to fetch her. Now that would have been a different story.

Kaila stepped out of the car, not forgetting to thank her chauffer of course, and looked at the building in front of her. A metallic signage spelling out Seoul Science High School was placed on top of the tall massive green gates. Anyone who could read would know that this was indeed the institution that was highly respected and honored. But Kaila would beg to differ. Seoul Science High School was not a school. It was more of like a factory that produces robots that do science and mathematical all day. And if it isn’t quite obvious yet, she wasn’t in to that.  Another day inside this hell hole, the girl thinks to herself as she let the guards check her identification card for verification.

7:00 AM

“! ! ! ! !” Kaila was awoken by her seatmate’s unlimited cursing.

“What’s your deal?” Kaila lazily asked her seatmate while rubbing one of her eyes awake.

“Well, the teacher is here. That means 1st period is about to start” Her seatmate responded while catching her breath then says in a loud voice “Sir Kim is here guys!” and as the announcement was made,  the rest of the students scrambled to find their seats and tried to look decent before the teacher arrived.

“Aish. Why can’t they just stay put. They do this every freakin’ morning.” Kaila spoke to no one in particular. But her seatmate answered her “Pfft. Stop acting all innocent. As if you don’t do it too. You’re just like that today since you actually did all of your homework at home.” The girl just shrugged at her classmate’s statement and turned her head towards the front to ignore the teasing smile that her seatmate was showing her.

“Good morning, class.” A somewhat vertically challenged male then said while he entered the room carrying a lesson plan with a sign that says Earth Science on the front cover.

“Good morning, Sir Kim” the class obediently answered.

“Turn to page 53 of your book and answer letters A to D for 30 minutes. I hope you read last night instead of just fooling around with your social media accounts.”

The class just can’t help but act all innocent even if all of them were already murdering Sir Kim Jonghyun inside their twisted heads. Here we go. Kaila thought to herself as she flipped open her book and started answering.

6:15 PM

“Hey, Princess. Chauffer is here.” One of Kaila’s guy friends teased. The girl stuck her tongue out in a teasing manner at the boy and bid her other friends goodbye. With that she headed out of the hell hole’s school’s gates.

A round of loud barks and growling can be heard as Kaila stepped out of the car. She peers above their small gate to see 5 furry friends, wagging their tail waiting for her. Right when she stepped inside, their daschund came running towards her making her sit in response as she welcomes the little dog with arms wide open. “Yes, I missed you too, you little hotdog you” Kaila giddily talks to her pet. And as if on cue, four other dogs of the family came and attacked her with their wet dog sloppy kisses a.k.a (also known as) . Having the feeling of being welcomed enough, she decided to step inside the house.

“Hey mom, I’m hooome!” The girl cheerfully said when she saw her mom. Mrs. Park looked up smiling and saying hello but not before pointing at her now dirty-white school blouse. Shrugging her shoulders, Kaila answered “The dogs”.  Her mother just nodded with an amused smile plastered on her lips.

After showering, Kaila dressed herself in shorts and a shirt- her everyday clothes. Feeling refreshed, the girl started doing her homework diligently in the common area of the house. Books and notebooks, pens and papers scattered on the table was a very normal sight. She doesn’t really bother much with being organized when she’s doing school stuff. Swallowed by her books, the girl didn’t hear footsteps coming up the stairs. But her study bubble bursted when she heard her brother laugh. Looking up from her books she saw her brother Jinyoung but was called Jr. with a guy she’s never seen before entering the boys’ room. Okaaay, who was that. Kaila ignored the feeling of her blood that was creeping up her cheeks and reluctantly turned to her books. Not long after , their mom called for dinner.

Halfway down the stairs Kaila could hear a lot of chattering coming from the dining area. If their house was super quite during the morning, it would be the complete opposite at night. Well, noise was inevitable when you live with 5 of your cousins. At the dinner table Kaila could see her dad on the center end of the table- the “daddy’s seat” for only her dad was supposed to sit on that chair. On the right side of her dad was her mom and the rest of the seats were randomly occupied by her 5 cousins. There were two unoccupied seats which were for her and Junior, who happens to be missing at the moment. Ignoring the thought, Kaila happily seats on the table next to her closest cousin- Park Jimin. Even though Jimin was almost 5 years younger than her favorite cousin, they always did stuff together. Both of the girls’ favorite would be “twinning” where they would buy similar clothes and wear them as if they were twins. Dinner was Kaila’s favorite time of the day because this was the only time during weekdays that all 9 of them (Mr. & Mrs. Park, Jr. and Kaila, and the 5 cousins) would eat together. Kaila almost choked when her 2 goofball cousins- Thunder and Jay Park- made a joke with matching hilarious facial expressions. Her oldest cousin, Sandara was quick to give Kaila a glass of water. The latter mumbled a quiet thanks before laughing along with the rest. While all of the older cousins were busy messing around, the youngest cousin- Hyomin, was busy talking to Mr. and Mrs. Park. All the 5 cousins- Sandara, Jay, Thunder, Jimin, and Hyomin- ended up at Jr. and Kaila’s home because all of their parents’ were overseas. Their parents also being the siblings of Mrs. Park.

When they were about to finish dinner, Jr. suddenly appeared at the door breathing heavily. “Sorry mom, sorry dad. I didn’t mean to be late”. His mom just gestured for him to sit and eat dinner, too in-the-mood  to give her son a scolding. Kaila then noticed her brother go out the door again instead of sitting on the table. But before the girl could even question, her older brother came back again and this time he wasn’t alone.

“Uhm, guys? This is my best friend, Jackson Wang. Jackson, meet the fam bam” Jr. happily introduced him to the family. The boy called Jackson just smiled and waved. Aww, he’s cute. No, wait. What?  Kaila thinks to herself but then got sidetracked when her mother spoke.

“Have you boys eaten yet?” Mrs. Park questioned.

“We haven’t yet, mom. That’s kinda why I brought Jackson here so he could eat before going home.” Jr. responded.

“Then go grab a plate and eat.” Mrs. Park said and then turns her attention to the new boy. “Eat plenty okay, Jackson? You are welcome here whenever.” Mrs. Park said sweetly while patting the younger’s hair.

“I will. Thank you.” Jackson responded cheerfully.

Kaila couldn’t help but notice the tingly feeling coming from the pit of her stomach as she stares at the boy in front of her. The latter must have felt it for he then turned his eyes towards Kaila. They locked eyes for a little over than a second when Kaila, being the girl and not to mention also being younger, decided to look away first. She was biting her lower lip in an attempt to prevent the giddy smile that was already forming. She wanted to look at the boy again. Shifting her eyes everywhere, she then decided. Last. Just, one last look. She chants to herself and then gives in, letting her eyes land on the boy in front of her once again. What she didn’t expect though, was that Jackson was already looking at her. The moment their eyes met for the second time, Kaila felt her gut turn 360 degrees. Jackson was smiling at her. . He’s smiling… at me. He’s smiling at me! Kaila not wanting to make a fool of herself for any longer, gave Jackson a very- very- very shy smile in return then hurriedly went out of the dining area. Oh, God. That was embarrassing… that was embarrassing. Why did I even look at him again? Why did I do that? And why was he already looking at me? I probably looked like an idiot. Tsk. Kaila mentally scolds herself as she was walking up the stairs. While her stomach was doing the complete opposite of what she was doing- it was on a downward spiral at the moment.

She felt her heart beat faster as if she just ran a mile which she found to be very odd. But she still couldn’t help but feel giddy and smile to herself as she remembered his smile. Probably the most enchanting smile she has ever seen.

Who are you Jackson Wang…
