The Statue

The Boy Painted Silver

Kyungsoo stopped in front of the statue on his way to work. He just wanted to touch it, but people were littering the park per usual and it would look weird for him to be feeling up a statue. He sighed and went around the pedestal.

His friend, Baekhyun, would laugh hysterically if he found out that Kyungsoo was obsessed with a statue and then proceed to tell him that Kyungsoo needed to get laid.

This almost daily occurrence of Baekhyun telling Kyungsoo to go find someone was really grating considering Baekhyun had a boyfriend of six years and didn't know a single thing about how to go about asking someone out (Chanyeol was Baekhyun's first boyfriend and also the one that asked Baekhyun out).

Kyungsoo sighed heavily and continued his way to the small bakery he worked at. Chanyeol also worked there but only the night shifts since Kyungsoo had evening classes so the two never really saw each other. Technically, Kyungsoo could work the night shift, but he was too stressed after his classes.

The statue fascination was just ridiculous, yet Kyungsoo stared at it a good five minutes, three times a day, everyday.

Never in his life had Kyungsoo thought a statue was attractive until he saw the silver boy in the park.

----

"Please Kyungsoo," Chanyeol whined on the other end of the phone, "Just take over my shift. Baek's sick and I have to take him to the doctor. You know he can't drive."

Kyungsoo could practically see Chanyeol pouting on the other end. "Fine," he relented, "But if I ever ask you for a favor, you're gonna do it. No questions asked."

"Thank you so much oh my god I could kiss you," Chanyeol exhaled in relief.

"Please don't," Kyungsoo grimaced. Chanyeol squealed happily before telling Kyungsoo a drawn out goodbye and hung up.

Kyungsoo dragged his feet as he exited his apartment. The walk only took about fifteen minutes, and it gave Kyungsoo another chance to creep on the statue.

The dim lighting in the park gave the statue a gorgeous shadow casting over his perfectly sculptured face. Kyungsoo found himself staring longer than five minutes, and he snapped himself out of his stupor after remembering that he had a shift to take over.

Kyungsoo had to run the rest of the way to the bakery, but he made it with a few minutes to spare. He wheezed from the sudden physical exertion and decided that maybe he should start working out. Somehow Kyungsoo thought of the statue in the park, thought about how there was a chiseled line of abs under his silver shirt.

Whoever carved that statue must be laughing at Kyungsoo's internal suffering.

----

Kyungsoo locked up the bakery when the shift ended and walked towards the park. Street lights gave him very little sense of security as he wrapped his arms around himself.

"How does Chanyeol do this every night?" Kyungsoo mumbled. Then again, Chanyeol was over six feet tall, and Kyungsoo was barely five foot seven.

He turned the corner that led to the park and held back a gasp of surprise when the pedestal was empty.

----

"So, somebody stole the statue?" Baekhyun coughed on the other end of the phone, "Maybe park officials took it to be cleaned or waxed or something."

Kyungsoo didn't even consider that option in his haste to call Baekhyun, "Do they actually do that?"

"I don't know, Soo. I'm tired and sick and Chanyeol wants to go down on me. Goodnight."

----

Kyungsoo ran to the park the next day, and the statue was on the pedestal in the same position as always.

"Maybe they did just clean it," Kyungsoo muttered, "Though it wasn't dirty before."

Now that Kyungsoo thought about it, the statue did always look clean. The silver always sparkled under the sunlight like it was cleaned everyday.

Kyungsoo circled the statue, trying to find anything amiss. It looked exactly the same.

"Weird," Kyungsoo mumbled, shaking his head as he continued his trek to work.

----

"Goddammit, Chanyeol," Kyungsoo growled. Once again, he was covering for the lanky giant. Baekhyun had another appointment that Chanyeol had to drive him to. "I am going to ing kill you."

Kyungsoo passed through the park, not stopping by the statue in his anger-clouded mind. He didn't even notice that the statue was missing.

He opened the bakery door by kicking it, feeling like chopping the stupid bell off of the wire. Even the sugary smell he once adored pissed him off.

The bakery stayed empty for the first hour, and Kyungsoo nodded off from boredom. The bell sounded, causing Kyungsoo to jump and bang his head on the counter.

"," Kyungsoo whimpered, pressing the heels of his palms onto his forehead.

"Are you okay?" a voice sounded from above him. Kyungsoo looked up and his eyes widened.

The tan boy with slightly curly black hair looked so much like the silver statue in the park. But that was ridiculous since the statue was well, a statue and not the living, breathing human being above him. Plus, the gorgeous boy was wearing a white tank top with a black and gray varsity jacket over with black skinny jeans instead of a well-fitted tuxedo.

"Are you okay?" Statue-Lookalike repeated.

"Yep. I'm fantastic," Kyungsoo replied, "Just casually going insane."

"Huh?" the other looked confused, "Over what?"

"Nothing. What can I get you?"

After more awkward stumbling and conversation, the tanned boy was walking out the door with swagger. Kyungsoo couldn't help but notice the disturbingly y number of letterman patches on the back of his jacket as well as the delicious shape of his .

"Goddammit, Chanyeol," Kyungsoo growled as he pressed his hips against the counter.

----

"So, statue boy came alive?" Baekhyun asked, readjusting the phone to sit more comfortably on his cheek and shoulder. Kyungsoo heard a "Not now, Yeollie" as well, but he chose to ignore it.

"Baekhyun, stop me if I'm wrong," Kyungsoo started slowly, "But you aren't actually sick are you?" The hesitation on the other end answered the question. "Let me guess...you and Chanyeol decided to go on some lover's vacation right?"

"Um..."

"YOU ," Kyungsoo screeched, "I'm over here going insane while you're out ing Chanyeol?!"

"Kyung-"

"NO! I don't wanna hear it. I've covered for Chanyeol for two days and believed you were seriously sick. Thanks. Bye." Kyungsoo smashed his finger on the END button and threw his phone at a wall.

----

Kyungsoo never could stay mad at his friends for long. That's why he found himself for the third day in a row at the bakery for the night shift. He sighed and mussed his black hair. Good thing the owner told him he could close early.

The clock struck the early closing hour, and Kyungsoo was glad to be done for the day. He locked up the bakery after disposing of the pastries that didn't get sold and shutting off the lights. He walked to the corner so he could head to the park until someone called out to him.

"Hey, come here cutie!"

Kyungsoo ignored him and started walking a little faster. A single set of footsteps turned into many sets and Kyungsoo found himself sprinting. He wasn't the most athletic person out there, but he did have a good head start.

He turned into the park and realized that his pursuers were a lot closer than they were before. Five in total. Kyungsoo swallowed the lump in his throat. There was no way he could run to his apartment without getting caught.

A gleam of silver caught his eye. The statue. Praying to every major deity he could think of, Kyungsoo lurched forward. The statue's back was facing were Kyungsoo entered, and the small boy adjusted himself so that he was hiding between its arms.

"Where'd you go, sweetheart?" the original pursuer asked as they entered the park as well. Kyungsoo tried to keep his breathing steady. "We just wanna play."

The five passed the statue, and Kyungsoo hoped they wouldn't turn around. They were facing away from him, calling out every once in awhile.

Then a silver top hat was obscuring his vision. His breath hitched as the statue rearranged itself so that Kyungsoo couldn't easily be seen. The hat was hiding his face and his body hidden by the statue's own. It still looked like a casual stance, and hopefully Kyungsoo's pursuers didn't notice the change.

"Be quiet," the silver boy whispered. If Kyungsoo wasn't so close, he wouldn't have heard it.

The five boys mumbled to each other before slowly jogging down another path after what felt like an eternity. The statue and Kyungsoo didn't move for a few moments, making sure that the five were truly gone.

The silver boy moved, allowing Kyungsoo freedom. After the smaller boy was off the pedestal, the statue went back into his original position.

"You're alive?" Kyungsoo blurted out dumbly, "Wait...were you the guy from yesterday?"

Silence.

"Nobody but me is around; you can talk."

More silence.

"Fine, be that way," Kyungsoo snapped. He began to stomp off but his heel before he was too far away and called out, "Thanks for saving me," and running home.

----

Kyungsoo woke up an hour earlier to go to the silver boy. He decided to call in sick at work and skip his classes that day. He packed food for the entire day, grabbed a book and a small pillow, and shoved all of it into his backpack. He also decided to put the data on his phone to use.

By the time he arrived to the park, the silver boy was already there, and Kyungsoo was the only other person there. He stopped right in front of the pedestal and glanced up at him.

"Are you going to talk today?" Silence. "Well, I'll be right here if you decide that you do."

He tossed his pillow on the ground right next to the pedestal and sat down, leaning against it. He pulled out his book and made himself comfortable.

He was fine for the first couple of hours. Then noon rolled around. Kyungsoo was practically dying from the heat, and the silver boy's shadow wasn't going in his direction. He didn't want to give in and sit under a tree in case the living statue decided to whisper something to him.

"How do you do this everyday," Kyungsoo whined, fanning himself with his book. "I'm in freaking shorts and I'm over here dying. You're in a full on tux with like six pounds of paint."

A faint beeping sound caught Kyungsoo's attention. He looked around for the source and yelped when he noticed the silver boy now sitting on the pedestal.

"It's more than six," the living statue joked, "And I only stand here until noon then come back around four."

He had the top hat in his hand and the cane under the same arm when he started walking away. Kyungsoo scrambled to pack everything up and followed him.

"I can't believe you're actually real," the smaller said as he trailed behind, "You stand very still."

"It's my job," silver boy replied, "And it's quite flattering how you stare at me everyday."

"I thought you were a statue," Kyungsoo mumbled lamely.

"Most people do," he replied, "But then again, most people touch me to see if I'm real."

They entered a small building Kyungsoo didn't know existed until now. The silver boy took off the overcoat and vest and began undoing the buttons on the button down shirt. Kyungsoo couldn't help but stare, and he realized that not all of the boy was painted silver. Just exposed skin and his hair.

"This paint only comes off with acid," he began to explain, "It keeps my skin nice and clear." He gave Kyungsoo a cheeky smile. "And I wear contacts to make my eyes look silver too. The job pays well, and I don't mind it, honestly."

Kyungsoo tried not to watch him strip, but damn, the boy was defined as hell. Kyungsoo unconsciously his lips and attempted to avert his eyes as the living statue shimmied out of his pants, but his thighs were toned and who wouldn't pass up the chance at looking at his (though he was wearing boxers - Kyungsoo wasn't sure if the flimsy cloth was a good thing or not).

"What's your name?" Kyungsoo asked just to distract himself.

"Jongin," he answered easily, "I think your name is Kyungsoo, right?"

"Yeah."

Jongin started scrubbing his face, neck, and arms with a loofa soaked in the acid he spoke of earlier. The paint peeled off easily, exposing his tanned skin. It was then Kyungsoo realized that they were in some sort of bath house.

"The paint is a to get out of my hair," Jongin said suddenly, "So I just leave it until my second shift is over."

"Oh," Kyungsoo said dumbly. Jongin began pulling on his regular clothes—dark skinny jeans and a plain graphic tee—and put on a SnapBack to hide his hair. He then took out his contacts and put them in their container.

"So, Kyungsoo, I'm free until four. Well, more like three thirty since I have to repaint myself," Jongin announced, "What would you like to do?"

You, he was tempted to say but that would've been creepy. "Um, walk and talk?"

Jongin smiled, and Kyungsoo felt his bones turn into jelly. "We can do that."

----

"You never once thought I was real?" Jongin asked, snickering a little. "I'm definitely not the best living statue out there, but I don't look anything like metal or stone."

"I didn't know living statues were a real thing!" Kyungsoo defended himself.

Jongin actually burst out laughing at that. "Chanyeol said you weren't the brightest."

"What does that excuse for air have to do with anything?" Kyungsoo asked.

"I know Baekhyun, and he decided to play matchmaker. Him and Chanyeol went on vacation so that you would have to take over his shift. It normally ends when I'm done, but Chanyeol walks a lot faster than you do," Jongin teased, "I'm not supposed to move at all, but when I saw, well heard really, those five guys chasing you and when you used me to hide, I decided to help."

"That sneaky little ," Kyungsoo hissed, "I'm going to kill him. And Chanyeol. Well Chanyeol first so I can watch Baekhyun suffer."

Jongin went to reply, but his watch beeped. "Oh hey, I gotta go get repainted. This was fun," he smiled again (Kyungsoo nearly fell over), "I'll see you around!"

And just like that, Kyungsoo was left alone on the street with an erratically beating heart and the usual urge to throttle Baekhyun.

----

Kyungsoo approached Jongin the next day. He smiled at the silver boy when the tips of his sneakers touched the pedestal.

"Hi, Jongin," he said quietly, "I know you can't talk or move, so I'm just gonna give you this."

He put a folded slip of paper in the inside pocket of his silver overcoat. It had his phone number and when he was free to hang out (or do anything else) written on it.

"Bye," he whispered and began to walk around the raised platform to go to work. Kyungsoo barely missed Jongin's lips twitching up into a smile.

----

"Soo, we're back!"

Kyungsoo regretted giving Baekhyun the spare key to his apartment.

Kyungsoo pointed to Baekhyun, "You're a ." He then pointed to Chanyeol. "And you. Remember that favor I told you about? Don't Baekhyun for a week, don't go down on Baekhyun for a week, don't let Baekhyun go down on you...actually, no ual contact at all."

The couple sputtered. Kyungsoo held up his hand to silence them.

"It's been a rough week for me. The only thing that'll help me recover is know that you two are suffering," he said with a smirk. Well, Jongin had been lovely company, but they didn't need to know that.

"Kyungsoo," Baekhyun whined, "You can't do this!"

"Says you, ."

"He's only a for my-"

"Shut up, Chanyeol."
