I'm Never Going Back; Suhyun

Because of You

I was a quiet child, but I was a good child. I obeyed my parents, I did what I was supposed to do, but most of all, I loved my sister. We did everything together. We played together, we went to school together, and so on. For siblings who were four years apart, we were inseperable, as if we were born attached at the hip. My sister looked up to me, and I took care of her better than I took care of myself at times. Mother and father were always working. It's hard not to when both of them run a law firm together. My father was a prestigious judge, and my mother was his jewel in the crown, working by his side as one of the top lawyers in the country. Because of this, my sister and I seemed to grow up by ourselves, sheltered by nannies and butlers catering to our every whim. But we weren't spoiled and we weren't affected by this. We just needed each other.

Deulrim, my sister... she has quite a unique name, right? My parents named her that, in hopes that she'll someday achieve her dream and be happy. While my name? Outstanding? Benevolent? Ah, it's just another name... right. I guess it was decided at my sister's birth, really. They dropped all their attention off of me and showered it upon Deulrim. She seemed to get everything, while I stood aside and watched. I didn't mind. She was my younger sister, so I let it be. She was so sweet and innocent, still is. I trusted her with all my little secrets, and she trusted me with hers.

Growing up the first born daughter of lawyers, there was one thing I was always doing; studying. It was a bore, really. As I grew up, I began gaining a passion for the arts. It's a funny story how I got into it, really. When I was in middle school, around sixth grade, and my sister was still back in elementary school in the second grade, a peculiar boy joined my class. A boy genius they said. So ingenius that he was able to study ahead of all the other students and skipped ahead two grades. Imagine that, a fourth grader in a sixth grade class. His mother was an actress and his father, a renowned surgeon. I remember that day... the day he first came to class...

-

The class bell rung and soon the quiet, empty classroom was filled with the chattering of school kids preparing for another hard day's learning. While other students greeted their friends and laughed, having fun before school even started, I sat by myself in the back row. In our class, we had an odd number, meaning every row of desks would be filled except for the last one. I sat in that row by myself. And I liked it that way. I even pulled my desk further back as to keep away from my fellow peers even more. By the time the teacher had entered the room, I had already finished most of the day's lesson notes in my notebook. Bless. That meant I could fall asleep in class without getting in trouble.

We all stood up as Ms. Kim entered the room and bowed our heads in respect. It was the same as every day, except something was a bit different this time. Ms. Kim brought a guest with her. A boy stood beside her. He looked around the classroom with confident eyes, his hands tightly gripping the straps of his backpack. My eyes met with his for a split second, a spark igniting between our gaze before I looked away. His eyes felt so cold for some reason, they sent shivers down my spine. I questioned why I felt that way about his eyes, but decided to shake it off. He introduced himself to the class, proudly. For a new student, he had no humility, no stage fright, no fear of new people. He was glowing with confidence. "My name's Gong Chansik. Pleasure meeting you all." With a touch of class, if I might say so myself. The teacher pointed to the empty row in the back, and he smirked at me, causing me to question what that look was for.

Walking to the back of the classroom, he dropped his backpack onto the desk, causing a loud thump. The sound caused me to flinch slightly, but I folded my hands in my lap and kept my eyes down. He took a seat, kicking his legs up on the desk with his hands in his pocket, his eyes burning holes into the side of my head. As the lesson started, I felt myself getting more and more uncomfortable, knowing full well he was still staring at me. "Uh, c-could you not," I began whispering to him, stealing glances at his piercing gaze every now and then. "Could you not stare at me?"

He didn't respond. After a while, he placed his arms on his desk and laid his head down, continuing to stare at me as he smiled, almost feline like, as he snuggled into his arms. "Hey."

"Wh-what?" I asked, turning to look at him.

"Do you like to dance?" He asked, tilting his head slightly.

My eyes grew wide at the question. What kind of question was that? I do like dancing... but that was a secret. I never told anyone or showed anyone besides my sister. If my parents knew of such interest, they would disapprove immediately. They wanted me focused one thing and one thing only; to become a lawyer so I could take over the family business. I looked back down into my lap, avoid his eyes. "No... I hate dancing," my words were hesistant, because they were lies.

Chansik sat up in his chair and grinned widely. "You're lying. I can tell."

I shushed him. "H-hey, you're being too loud. Keep it down or we'll get in trouble."

He shrugged, laying his head back down. "I don't mind. If we get detention, at least I'll be able to bother you more about this matter." I mentally groaned. "I like you." The hairs stood up on the back of my neck at the line, as if his words were laced with ice. There was just something about him that felt so cold... His accuracy about me lying hit me harder than the bitter cold in the nick of winter. "I can tell we're gonna get along. You've got spunk, and your eyes. Oh, man, I don't know how to put it. It's like-- they're full of dreams, potential."

Chansik and I both sat up straight when Ms. Kim slapped her ruler on the desk to get our attention and scolded us for talking. We mumbled our apologies. I spent the rest of the class staring out the window while Chansik spent it staring at the back of my neck. As soon as the last bell rang, I prepared to make a run for it, but Chansik was faster. He grabbed my backpack and ran for it, laughing mockingly. I ran after him, shouting for him to return my bleongings. Before I could catch him, he hopped onto his awaiting car and locked the door. I stopped and panted, glaring at him as he rolled down the window. He stuck his head outside and smirked. "If you want your things back, stop by this address. All right?" He handed me a notecard before ordering the driver to drive off. I shouted after him to no avail. Looking at the card, I saw his address scribbled sloppily on it and huffed.

Heading home, I changed out of my uniform before ordering a butler to drive me to the address, stating that he should ask no questions nor say anything of the matter to my parents.

"Unnie, where are you going?" Deulrim asked, skipping outside after me.

"Oh, Deulrim, I was, ah, headed to a peer's house," I pursed my lips, not wanting to lie to her about my dilemma. "That jerk stole my backpack."

"Oh, no!" She cried, hugging my arm. "What a meanie! Unnie, let me go with you. I'll help you beat him up." I smiled widely at my sister's adorable reply, pinching her cheeks as I nodded. We both boarded the car and were bound towards Gong Chansik's house, both determined to get him back for putting us through all this trouble. Arriving at the house, or should I say manor, we both gawked at the beautiful home. As our butler escorted us to the door, I told him to park the car and come with us before ringing the doorbell, only to be greeted by yet another boy. I was already peeved by one, I wasn't ready or willing to interact with another.

"Hello?" He said in a questioning manner, quirking a brow. He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose before looking us up and down. "Can I help you?"

"Where is Chansik?" I said demandingly.

"Busy? Uh, are you one of those stalker girls or something? Because if you are, I'm going to really need you to leave. It's kinda weird and," he pursed his lips, looking at me as if I were crazy. "You're not his style. You dress like a granny."

My jaw gaped at his reply. I huffed angrily and pushed him out of the way, shouting into the enourmous home. "Gong Chansik! Get your out here. If my father hears about this, he will not stand for it!"

My sister tugged on my cardigan and whispered, "Yeah, but then you'd be in trouble." I shushed her and angrily stomped inside, my sister desperately trying to hold my back while the boy from before walked ahead of me, waving his hands to try to get me to stop. Down the main hallway, I could hear music being played loudly from one of the rooms and decided that was where my target was. I sprinted towards the room and threw the door open. "Chansik!" I screamed, only to cover my mouth when I realized there were three other boys inside along with Chansik. Chansik paused what he was doing and turned off the music, grabbing a towel to dab away the sweat on his brows.

The boy who opened the door entered the room and shook his head in defeat. "I tried to stop her, man."

"It's all right. Thanks for getting the door, CNU," Chansik replied, taking a sip from his water bottle.

"No problem."

Though I was a bit nervous there were others around, I crossed my arms and tapped my foot in irritation. "Can I please have my backpack back now?"

"Sure... or," Chansik smiled. "You can sit down, stop being so uptight, and enjoy a show."

"Yeah, no. See, I have to go do this thing called studying," I retorted.

Deulrim pursed her lips, glancing back and forth between me and Chansik before tapping on my shoulder and bringing me down closer to her so she could whisper in my ear. "Unnie, I don't know about you, but I kind of want to stay and watch for a bit. It might be exciting."

"What? No," I replied. "Are you crazy? This jerk stole my backpack."

"But unnie, aren't you tired of studying, too? Come on. It won't hurt to take a break once in a while." I sighed. My sister knew me too well. I despised studying and only did it to fulfill my parents' wishes. Sighing in defeat, I took a seat on a bench against the wall along with my sister. Looking around the room, I finally realized it was a dance studio. The walls were covered in mirrors and one wall was composed of all windows, shedding natural light in the room. Chansik smiled at us and clapped his hands, calling the boys back to "practice." Taking his position, he gestured for me to hit play on the stereo, and I rolled my eyes, but did it anyway.

I listened to the song playing and could easily recognize it to be Shinhwa's Wedding. My parents didn't allow us to listen to music often, but that was one of the few things I disobeyed. I loved music. I watched in awe as the boys began dancing, in perfect sync with each other as if they were natural born dancers. I couldn't help but let a smile slip onto my lips. Chansik noticed this and shot me a smug grin, causing me to frown deeply again. Deulrim on the other hand clapped in excitement at the performance and cheered when it ended. Chansik came over and pulled me out of my seat, a wide girn on his face. "Your turn."

"My turn? What do you mean my turn? I don't dance," I replied, fighting him.

"Yes, you do!" Deulrim shouted, standing up. I died inside. My sister literally just sold me out to my current number one enemy. "I see you dance in your room all the time. You even perform for me sometimes. Remember? You always love dancing to BoA's ID Peace B."

I gave my sister a look that told her to sit down and shush. She immediately understood and sat back down, staring at her feet. I glared at Chansik as he continued staring at me, hoping I'd agree to it. "No."

"Come on. You know you want to."

"No, I don't. I want my backpack back, though."

"How about we make a deal?" I quirked a brow at him as he began walking in circles around me. "If you dance ID Peace B for us, I'll give you back your backpack, and you can go home. Easy enough right?"

"And?"

"And what?"

"If I dance for you, you have to promise you'll stop staring at me in class. You're bothering me, and I can't focus on my studies. If my grades slip because of you, I'll kick your ."

"Deal."

I sighed and stepped out into the middle of the empty room. There were six pairs of eyes on me, including my sister's, making me feel quite uncomfortable. Taking a deep breath in, I summoned whatever scraps of courage and confidence I had and waited for the music to start playing. Chansik pressed the play button and the music started to fill the room. I let the music flow throughout me, guiding me. I danced as if it was just my sister and I back at home. For those short few minutes, I felt great. I felt free, like I didn't have the burden of my family's business and future on my shoulders. It felt incredible to dance in front of a live audience, even if it was just Chansik and his friends. They seemed to be enjoying it as well, impressed by how good I was despite the fact that I looked and acted like a grandmother. Once the song ended, I stood there, breathing heavily. I was grinning from ear to ear. Looking around quietly, my grin faded as I reverted back to my shy self, shrinking away as I scurried to my sister's side. Chansik nodded and called for his butler to bring in the backpack.

"See, that wasn't so bad. I knew you had it in you," Chansik sad.

I snatched the backpack and grabbed my sister's wrist, pulling her away. "Shut up," I told him, quickly hurrying to get out. Pausing at the door, I pursed my lips and furrowed my brows before quickly spitting out. "See you at school tomorrow, jerk." With that, I took off, leaving Chansik to chuckle with his friends at the display. On our way home, I couldn't help but stare outside the window, longing to dance like a did just a few minutes ago. I wanted it. I wanted it so bad.

It was then that I decided I wanted to be a star.
