Like the Stars

At the feeling of something tickling at her feet, Shindae stirred out of her light slumber and opened her eyes to slits. The thousands of stars of yesterday had disappeared completely, making place for a clear blue sky with occasional puffy clouds that floated past her. Turning her head, Shindae met with a head full of brown locks that covered half of a fair face. His eyes hid behind his bangs but his nose scrunched every now and then because of the sand that tickled him.   She didn’t jump in surprise when she caught Yoongi in such a close position to her, like those fake drama actrices who found every sort of male contact very intriguing and daring. Instead, Shindae moved to lay on her side and trailed her eyes along his soft features, wondering how a nose could create such a perfect bow as it sat between two drowsy puppy eyes. They were a little droopy at the outer corners and made Shindae want to pinch the boy’s cheeks because of his seeming innocence.   His full lips were slightly parted as they allowed small puffs of air to escape from them and ghost over Shindae’s. Cute, she thought to herself with a small grin that grew when Yoongi rubbed his nose and smacked his lips before moving into a more comfortable position. “Shinnie,” a sudden raspy morning voice whispered near Shindae’s ear. The girl wasn’t the slightest surprised by it, though, and just hummed in response when she recognized the boy. “Why are you staring at his face?”   “Because it’s cute,” Shindae answered without much thought and sat up quietly as she tried not to wake the boy that laid next to her. Jeongkook nodded with a small grin and cocked his head as he watched his brother. “Hyung can be cute when he’s not busy being a proper ," he chuckled softly before looking at Shindae. The latter smiled at this and nudged Jeongkook lightly. “He can’t be that bad,” she cocked her eyebrows knowingly, cooing inwardly when she saw the boy’s smile soften when he glanced at the stirring Yoongi. “He isn’t.”   Finally, Yoongi groaned and stretched to make his awakening known and lazily sat up next to the two. “Morning,” he groggily greeted as he peered through the small puffy slits that were his eyes, switching from the girl to his younger brother. Shindae tried not to laugh and greeted the boy back. “Good morning.”   Yoongi was still a little disoriented when he ruffled his Chestnut hair as he looked around, his eyes still narrowed because of the bright sunlight that surrounded them. “We slept outside,” he stated, showing that he was obviously still half asleep. Jeongkook looked at his brother as if he was crazy while Shindae just hummed and nodded. “Seems like it.”   Jeongkook frowned at the older boy, shook his head and stood up, pushing Yoongi’s head when he passed him. “You’re so lame in the mornings, hyung,” he muttered before trudging towards the water. Yoongi dropped back into the sand because of his instability but instead of getting angry at his little brother, he just got comfortable again and somewhat fell asleep again. Shindae laughed at the interaction of the two and decided to let the boy sleep before going inside. After a moment of admiring the light interior of the beach house, Shindae spotted an archlike entrance that lead to what seemed to be the kitchen.   She spotted the eldest of the clan at the counter, fervently cutting and pouring. She approached Jin and leaned against the marble edge next to him. “Can I help with anything?” she carefully asked the boy, trying not to scare him while he was handling a big kitchen knife. Jin looked up from the board he was cutting some exotic fruits on and smiled when he was greeted by Shindae. “Good morning,” he welcomed the girl. She smiled back and placed her hands on the empty counter next to him as she watched him skillfully stir some eggs while mixing the cut fruits in a bowl.   “You can set the table,” Jin smiled and nodded at the mahogany table behind them. Shindae saluted him playfully and instantly began scanning the room for the drawer that would most probably contain the cutlery. At the other side of the kitchen, she found them and picked out the most logical items before carefully placing them on the table, as they looked pretty expensive and she still didn’t know who they belonged to. It was funny but when she looked up at Jin, him being surrounded by the kitchen didn’t seem as strange as she would have thought it would’ve been with Jeongkook.   The way he worked seemed like it came natural to him and belonged in this room. Shindae slowed her setting of the table and admired how Jin continued to work - flowing between the counters like water and smoothly working on every single dish he was preparing. “Well good morning to you too, Mr Sleepyhead,” Jin suddenly spoke up and grinned as he threw the scrambled eggs on plates and eyed a sleepy Yoongi who had entered. Shindae fixed her eyes on the boy and laughed when he just groaned in response and rubbed his eyes before plopping down on a chair and leaning his head in his palms.   “Mo~m, hyung tracked sand through the whole house!” Jeongkook whined as he jumped over the chunks of sand that covered the marble floor towards the kitchen. Jin tsked and smacked Yoongi’s head when he passed him approaching the youngest. “Can you please finish up here for me? I need to do some cleaning,” the eldest asked Shindae as he sneered at a whining Yoongi. The girl nodded with an amused smile and continued setting the table before placing the fruitbowl in the middle. Jeongkook soon joined her and placed the plates with eggs and toast on random spots on the table. Yoongi was still laying half passed out on the table and didn’t take any notice of the two sitting down as they waited for Jin to join them.   "So how do you all spend your time on a beautiful day like this?” Shindae asked while eyeing Jeongkook who was poking Yoongi’s cheek to check if he was still alive. When the girl asked her question, however, he swiveled his body towards her as he thought for a moment. “We usually just hang around the city square,” he mumbled, “we’ve already been here for a few weeks so we’ve seen most of it already.”   “Ahh,” Shindae nodded in understanding and eyed Yoongi who was a little more awake than before. “We can show you around today,” he yawned as he looked through small eyes at Shindae but she shook her hands to dismiss the idea. “I don’t want to impose,” she quickly said and picked at her plate, for some reason suddenly feeling that she had been leeching off the boys too much already. “Well, you already slept in a stolen house,” Jin entered the kitchen and smacked Yoongi’s head again, earning a whine from him, before he sat down between him and Shindae. She sneered at the man because of his comment while Jeongkook already began eating. “Correction, I slept outside of a stolen house,” Shindae snapped and threw a piece of melon from the bowl his way which he skillfully avoided.   “Like that functions as a proper difference,” Yoongi laughed as he seemed to be fully awake now.   “For my conscience, it does,” Shindae replied and angrily chewed on a piece of toast, only making Yoongi laugh more. “We’re showing you around and that’s that, Shinnie. You don’t have another choice,” Jeongkook interrupted and grinned as he happily chewed on a grape. It was something in his eyes that managed to tug a smile on Shindae’s lips - may it be his sheer innocence or his undoubted persistence - but the girl nodded in defeat before she met eyes with Yoongi for a moment.   Again, Shindae felt something stir in her stomach when he smiled at her while shaking his head and took a bite from his toast.

“But Karon beach is so great! Shinnie will love it!” Jeongkook complained as he stomped his foot on the gray asphalt that bordered a fairly busy road. Shindae was watching on amused how Jin looked at the map, and fought with Yoongi and Jeongkook about where to go first. They had promised - Yoongi’s honor - to tour the girl around but this required a fair amount of teamwork because they were the three that knew the most about the island.   But they hadn’t even left yet or problem number one had already arrived.   “Phatong is just as far from here and a lot more accommodated so it’s only logical to go there instead,” Yoongi lazily countered while he leaned his elbow on the ledge of the low brick wall, his chin resting in his palm.     “Guys - ” Shindae tried but got cut off by Jin.   “We can just go to both since there’s like a nine minute interval between them,” he interrupted and pursed his lips together as he trailed a path with his finger along a blue line. Jeongkook fistpumped the air at this and stuck his tongue out at Yoongi but the elder just rolled his eyes at his childishness. After another second, Jeongkook’s finger flew into the air again. “Oh! The Big Buddha, she needs to see that too!”   “Cholong,” Jin muttered as he searched for it on the map and nodded in agreement.   “Jeongkook - ”   “What about Laem Phrom Thep?” Yoongi interrupted Shindae again as he stretched his neck to see the map better and tapped on the utmost lowest point of the island, “the sunset at the cape is phenomenal and there’s an outdoor view point.”   Jin instantly nodded. “We can go there last - ”   “Yoongi-yah!” Shindae suddenly boomed with a frustrated expression to get the boy’s attention as she was tired of being ignored. All three turned to her surprised and looked at her but Shindae just frowned at them as she folded her arms in front of her chest. “Do I have any say in all of this or am I just to follow all of you?” she asked, flailing her arms to add more umph to get her message across. Yoongi laughed at her sudden outburst as Jin softly apologized but the youngest just cheekily nodded with a smile. “The last part.”   Just as Shindae wanted to respond, it was Yoongi who interrupted her again. “Oh, we can rent tuk tuks!” he smiled widely, displaying his gummy smile, as he focused on Jin and motioned his head at something behind him. “Back at the main market they have a load of those.”   “Oh my god Shinnie, have you ever driven a tuk tuk?” Jeongkook asked enthusiastically, dismissing her initial outburst, but didn’t leave any place for a response. “They’re so tiny and compact and make a weird sound but they’re so cool! Even I am allowed to drive them!”   “Which will not happen,” Jin instantly piped in and began folding the map. “Remember last week?” he cocked an eyebrow as he eyed Jeongkook. Yoongi immediately broke out into a fit of laughter, pleasantly surprising Shindae because the sound was definitely not unwelcomed, while Jeongkook began to pout. Yoongi was already at the point that tears began to build in his eyes from all the laughing and leaned on the low brick wall. “He drove it- hahahaha! into a damn w-wallhahaha!” he spoke between his laughs and wiped his tears when he looked at Shindae. “While we were still in the parking lot!” he said before he broke out into another series of laughter.   Shindae couldn’t help but watch with a sorry expression how Jeongkook stomped his foot on the ground with a frown. “I mixed up the gas pedal and the brakes, okay?!” he exclaimed and crossed his arms angrily before walking away into the crowd that filled the sidewalk. Jin sighed, “come on,” he smiled at Shindae and half ran after Jeongkook to attempt to knock some sense into the boy. Shindae laughed, shaking her head because it didn’t surprise her something like that could happen, and followed after Yoongi, who was still laughing.   “Glad you’re more awake than an hour ago,” the girl chuckled as she watched him compose himself again. “Yeah, it usually takes some time before I’m fully sane again,” he answered while he wiped away the remnants of his tears. Shindae laughed again and searched for the other two boys that had disappeared in the crowd. “Do you three always bicker about things like that?” she asked after a moment with a playful grin, tightening her fingers around the straps of her backpack when the crowd became more dense than she had expected.     “Nine out of ten times, yes,” Yoongi nodded as he casually switched their positions so Shindae was walking on the inside with him at the side of the road. The student blushed slightly at his gesture because it was something very courteous - and no one had ever done that for her. She cleared awkwardly as to lose the nervous chills that ran through her body, earning a smile on Yoongi’s lips because he had the feeling it was because of him.   “So where are we headed first?” Shindae asked to change the subject when she spotted Jin and Jeongkook. Yet again her blush didn’t have time to leave her cheeks because Yoongi mindlessly reached out for her again and held her elbow to lead her through the crowd. He had done this before but that time Shindae hadn’t noticed because she was too absorbed in her own story. “Most logically the Big Buddha, then the beaches,” Yoongi answered, not taking any notice of the girl’s uncomfortable vibe, and stuffed his hands into his pockets when the crowd had opened up, “since it’s around twelve right now, we’ll definitely be in time for the sunset in Laem Phrom Thep and afterwards we can go back to Phuket, since it’s about twenty minutes away from there.”   Shindae nodded, trusting that the boys knew what they were doing and followed him to the parking lot that was behind the main market’s town hall. “About time!” Jeongkook exclaimed when he finally saw the two, as he hung out of one of the tuk tuk
