Chapter 2: Musical Presentation

“Andwae!” I said, firmly. “Whyyyy??” Mi Hee asked. “Andwae! I am not dyeing my hair!” I said again as I grabbed my bag, preparing to storm out of the salon. “Fine, Not dyeing your hair!” she said as she pulled my back down the chair. “We’ll just cut it and have it treated. Ne?” I sighed and agreed. A girl came up to me and Mi Hee told her to cut my hair that would suit me so the makeover began.

By the time it was done, my hair was framing my face nicely and it was soft. I grinned. I actually liked it. I ran my fingers through my hair to mess it up a bit and make me look chic. I stood up and twirled. “Geulaeseo? How is it?” Mi Hee squealed. “It’s perfect!” She grabbed my hand and my bag. “Where are we going?” I asked. “I figured since you got a new look. Let’s buy some cosmetics so we can go to a bar sometime.” She said with a wink. I frowned but I don’t deny that I haven’t dreamed of sneaking into a bar.

“Na wass-eo!” I said as I walked through the doors of my house carrying with me a bunch of shopping bags. Ends up it was not just cosmetics we bought but also clothes. In short, we went for a full blown shopping spree. “Welcome back!” Eonni said as she eyed the bags on my arms. “You went shopping?” she asked. I nodded and grinned. “With who?” “With Mi Hee.” I said. Her eyes grew wide and said, “She’s back? Wow! How is she? That crazy girl! She didn’t tell us anything!” Eonni started ranting. I laughed and said, “I wonder where I got my personality from…?” Eonni laughed. “Shut up, Yoo Rin. Anyway, go upstairs. It’s almost time for bed.” I kissed her cheek on the way up and said, “Annyeonghi jumuseyo.” “Annyeonghi jumuseyo.” She replied.

The next day, I was wearing my once again oversized uniform. I actually combed my hair because it feels so soft. I tied it into a side ponytail. I stared at my reflection. What would happen if I actually dressed up? I thought. Aish! No! I yanked the clip off and proceeded to braid my hair. When it was done I picked up my glasses and bag. Since eonni and oppa aren’t around I have to take my bike to school.

???’s POV

I sighed as I sat down. Somehow, I feel a bit… confident today. Confident? I shrugged. First subject today was music. Ms. Kim allowed us to listen to our own song and present our feelings about it creatively. We all grabbed our iPods and listened to our own music. I scanned through my iPod for Korean songs but I didn’t feel like presenting any of those so I switched to Hollywood songs. Scanning through, I came across ‘Story Of Us’ by Taylor Swift. I stared it at for a second or two before clicking the play button. I looked around and people were doing head-bangs and stuff. I just grinned and nodded my head to the beat. 5 minutes passed and the Ms. Kim announced that the time was up. First up was Sohyun. She danced to Gee by SNSD. Mostly the girls danced to overly seductive songs and the boys sang or danced to rock songs and all of their songs were Korean.

“Okay, last but not the least is Ms. Park Yoo Rin.” I blinked. Of course I’d be last. As I passed by the students they snickered thinking it would end up down the drain. I dragged a chair and a table to the front making my teacher and classmates confused. I plugged my iPod to the speakers and hit play.

“I used to think one day we’d tell the story of us

How we met and the sparks flew instantly

And people would say we’re the lucky ones.”

The song started and they started to murmur. I placed my headphones on as though I was listening to music and grabbed a nearby book. I scanned through it. A few minutes later I looked at the floor and grinned as though I was love struck.

“I used to know my place was that spot next to you

Now I’m searching the room for an empty seat

‘Cause lately I don’t even know what page you’re on.”

I sighed heavily and slammed the book shut. By that time the whole class was silent. I groaned loudly and made my head fall back.

“Oh!  A simple complication

Miscommunication leads to fall out

So many things that I wish you knew

So many walls that I can’t break through!

Now I’m standing alone in a crowded room

And we’re not speaking!

And I’m dying to know is it killing you

Like it’s killing me, Yeah!”

I stood up and sat on the edge of the table. I looked around as if to look for someone. I stood up and paced around impatiently.

“I don’t know what to say since the twist of fate when we all broke down.

And the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now.”

I stomped my foot and yanked my headphones off, slamming them on the table. My classmates murmured a bit at this but were silent quickly.

“Next Chapter.”

I looked at a place and looked shocked. I hurriedly sat back down and opened the book in a hurry.

“How’d we end up this way?

See me nervously pulling at my clothes

Trying to look busy

And you’re doing your best to avoid me.”

I stood my book up and looked frazzled. I placed it back down and played with my hair and made a face. I yanked my glasses off and tapped my palms on the table. I opened the book briefly before closing it again.

“I’m starting to think one day I’d tell the story of us

How I was losing my mind when I saw you here

But you held your pride like I should’ve held me.”

I started to calm down. Thinking it would be weird to stare at nothing as appear embarrassed; I just looked at the nearest boy to me and quickly looked down as if I was embarrassed to let him see me looking at him. The class erupted into laughter when the guy grew red.

“Oh, I’m scared to see the ending

Why are we pretending

This is nothing?

I’d tell you I miss you

But I don’t know how

I’ve never heard silence quite this loud!”

I looked at another boy and he looked at me too. We stared at each other for a few seconds. I gave him a shy smile and wave. He ducked down as he blushed and waved by cutely. I grinned shyly and looked back down. The class erupted into hoots and teases. This was going way better than I thought.

“Now I’m standing alone in a crowded room

And we’re not speaking!

And I’m dying to know is it killing you

Like it’s killing me, Yeah!”

I grinned again shyly and opened my book and stared at the fly leaf blankly. I bit my lip and looked at another boy and quickly looked down. Somehow this was starting out to be actually quite fun. Why were they blushing so much?

“I don’t know what to say since the twist of fate when we all broke down.

And the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now.”

I stood up enthusiastically and jumped up. To fill in the instrumental part, I did a small dance of joy that made my classmates laugh.

“This is looking like a contest

Of who could act like they careless

But I liked it better when you were on my side.”

I sat back down with a dreamy smile. My eyes flew to 2 of my classmates holding hands. I stared at their hands then at the boy. I faked a sad face. I quickly looked down. I felt my tears brim my eyes. They erupted into ‘What happened?’ or ‘Is she crying?’ and ‘Woah…’ They looked at the couple I previously looked at and realization hit them.

“The battle’s in your hands now

But I would lay my armor down

If you’d say you’d rather love than fight.”

I took a deep breath a looked up, allowing them to see my tears. I faked trying to act strong. I closed my eyes and my tears started falling. I felt the atmosphere of the class changed. The atmosphere was more of guilty… I let out a sob. Then the atmosphere grew heavier.

“So many things that you wish I knew

But the story of us might be ending soon!

Now I’m standing alone in a crowded room

And we’re not speaking!

And I’m dying to know is it killing you

Like it’s killing me, Yeah!”

I ran to the black board and leaned my back on it, breathing heavily. I bit my lower lip and slowly sunk to the floor, letting my sobs resonate around the room. For the rest of the song I sat there crying loudly. Letting the lyrics of the song the role play I presented sink into their brains.

“I don’t know what to say since the twist of fate when we all broke down.

And the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now, now, noooow~~

And we’re not speaking!

And I’m dying to know is it killing you

Like it’s killing me, Yeah!

I don’t know what to say since the twist of fate ‘cause we’re going down

And the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now.

The End.”

When the song was over, I stood up, wiped my tears, returned the table and chair, grabbed my book, put on my glasses and went back to my seat. The whole room was quiet before boy erupted into claps of admiration and girl started clapping loudly and hooting. Ms. Kim smiled and said, “Well, that was a splendid performance, was it not?”

I know, you’re thinking what happened, right? It’s okay. I’m not me. Well… I am but I’m not ‘Yoo Rin’.

“Bora!” I heard someone call. I looked around the park and there I saw her. Who else? Yoo Rin of course. “So? How was it?” Yoo Rin asked. “Just as I predicted! You had that presentation in music.” Yoo Rin smiled and hugged me tightly. “You’re a life saver, Sis!” I grinned. I could get used to this…

-Flashback-

“Mi Hee!” Yoo Rin groaned. “I’m tired…” She said as she sat down on the nearest bench. Mi Hee rolled her eyes and said, “You have to totally bear with this!” she said as she stomped her foot. Yoo Rin groaned and said, “At least gimme a bathroom break!”Mi Hee agreed so Yoo Rin went to the bathroom. She combed her hair and washed her hands. When she looked up from her hands and checked her reflection. She noticed that her she had two reflections. She froze. She moved her head mechanically to the right and there was the greatest shock of her life. She was staring at a replica of herself. There were differences like, the other person had brown curly hair while she had black straight hair. The two ‘Yoo Rins’ were silent before they both took in a sharp breath and screamed. Neither of them knew that this was a start of an amazing revelation and bond between the long lost twins.

“Mi Hee!” Yoo Rin said as she ran over to her friend with big bright eyes. “Ne? Took you long enough!” Yoo Rin grinned mischievously, “I’m getting my hair dyed brown and curled.”

“MWO?!”
