Misinterpretation

Lost In Translation

Alternate title: the one where Wooyoung thinks he's dating Nichkhun

The first time Wooyoung met Nichkhun it was at 7am in the JYP dorms when he was half asleep, his mind still replaying yesterday’s dance steps as he stumbled to the front door. A tall lanky kid with eyes that had no business being that big waited patiently on the other side his fingers dancing on his thighs to an unknown rhythm. When Wooyoung finally managed to pry the door open (after an unfortunate incident which involved him tripping on a pair of shoes (Junsu’s it seemed like) and banging his knee into the wall with a few curses slipping out afterward.) He was met with a boy with a stupidly pretty face and hair too long to be a man, but before Wooyoung’s mind could spew out some nonsense about the boy’s pretty face, he was being bowed too.

“Hello, I’m Nichkhun. I’m from Thailand.”  The boy said shyly, looking up at him from his bow with his large brown eyes. Wooyoung hastily bowed back shocked at how well the boy’s (Nichkhun was his name, but the foreignness of it twisted in his minds tongue) Korean was. That is until Wooyoung introduced himself back and started blabbering nonsenses about what he knew of Thailand and started asking the other questions about his trip and how he was cast. He stopped mid-sentence when he noticed the lost expression on the boy’s face and his almost panicked shaking of hands to tell him he didn’t understand. Wooyoung sighed but ushered the boy in, he would let someone else deal with this one.

The second time Wooyoung met Nichkhun, Nichkhun accidentally mispronounces his name as Wooong and Wooyoung swears he laughs for what felt like days.

Gradually Nichkhun (who was Khun-hyung now) weaseled his way into the other trainees hearts with his bad Korean and angelic like face. He spent a lot of time with Taecyeon as they both found mutual ground in English. While Wooyoung pronunciation wasn’t half bad he was limited in phrases and had no choice but to watch the pretty face of Khun whisked away to another member. After a month the foreigner seemed to be adjusting to Korea, slowly but at least it was progress. Wooyoung still had to remind him to add –ssi or –nim when referring to elders and he also didn’t miss the way Khun would flinch when being touched by others. Wooyoung didn’t question it though and after a week it didn’t seem to bother the Thai anymore so Wooyoung shrugged it off.

The practices seemed to get longer and their debut date only got shorter, before they knew it they were set on the path of becoming One Day JYP’s latest hot boyband but things never work out as planned and soon they are being split up into two units 2PM and 2AM Wooyoung in the former. He’s happy he got to stick with most of his closer friends but something hidden deep in his heart is happier he’s still with Khun as well (although he’d never admit to it).

Speaking of Khun, the Thai boy has steadily been growing into the Thai man as his muscle shirts do little to hide the boys thick muscles and hardened abs. Wooyoung finds himself trouble concentrating on the dance in favor of looking at the boy, running into the other members or messing up his steps one too many times. It’s a problem and he knows he needs to put an end to it, this whatever it is he’s feeling for Khun has to stop but every time the boy flashes him one of his dazzling smiles or tries to tell a joke in his broken Korean Wooyoung finds he doesn’t have the energy to fight back anymore and lets himself fall.

It’s the night of their debut stage where things start to take a turn.

The members are high off the atmosphere happy and a little drunk when they stumble back into the dorms. Wooyoung makes a beeline towards Khun and raps his arms around the other boy’s neck, clinging to him in an embrace that would make couples jealous. Nichkhun laughs into his ear and presses his palms into Wooyoung’s hips, his fingers wrapping tightly around the fabric of the younger boys shirt. The embrace lasts longer than they both expected and they soon find themselves alone in the living room, the other members already crashing in their rooms. Wooyoung’s heart speeds up; he’s never been this intimate with another person let alone one he likes. He’s painfully inexperienced in relationships but that doesn’t stop him from pushing back from Nichkhun and boldly looking in to his eyes.

Khun looks back with hazy curiosity and such warmth that every restraint Wooyoung had leaves him and the minute he opens his mouth, his feelings for the Thai boy start rushing out. His sentences are sloppy but he knows he’ll never have courage like this again so like a water tap opening he tells Khun everything.

X

The next morning he wakes up in an unfamiliar bed with an unfamiliar body pressed up behind him. The sunlight streams through the blinds and illuminates the room which Wooyoung has successfully identified as Nichkhun’s and Chansung’s room although the younger boy is nowhere in sight.  Wooyoung slowly shifts to his side and stares at the face next to him, Khun is still asleep, his hair messy sprawled out against the pillow, eyelashes shadowing his cheeks and lips pink and pouted. Wooyoung feels himself lose his breath; he’s never seen a more beautiful sight.

Like a dam breaking memories of last night rush into Wooyoung’s head. His face goes red at a record breaking speed, memories of him confessing to Khun memories of him blabbering on and on but they stop there and Wooyoung can’t recall the events that happened after that, he’s not sure how he ended up in Khun’s bed with Khun in it but he thanks god they’re both still fully clothed because he doesn’t think he could handle his first night with anyone (especially Khun) and not remember it.

Butterflies have made themselves residents in Wooyoung’s belly but he tries to swallow them down. As he considers tracing his fingers along Nichkhun’s face the Thai boy slowly blinks his eyes awake. They are foggy and unfocused at first (but still just as beautiful, at least to Wooyoung) before they land on him and soften. Nichkhun flashes him a smile and Wooyoung can’t help but feel that things maybe went better than expected last night, why else would he be in Khun’s bed and have Khun smiling at him like that. If he had been rejected none of this would be happening Wooyoung reasons.

So he lets himself believe and presses his nose into Nichkhun’s neck in hopes of hiding his embarrassed blush but the others musky scent only worsens it. He feels Nichkhun’s arms wrap around him and hears the older boy chuckle in his ear not all that different form the night before. Wooyoung thinks his heart is going to break out of his chest and wonders if Nichkhun is feeling the same before the warmness of their embrace seeps into his tired bones and the sound of Khun’s steady breathing lulls him to sleep.

X

Things don’t continue upwards from there on as Wooyoung expected them too, all the members have packed schedules and Nichkhuns’ is the worst of them but he supposes that’s what having a popular boyfriend entails. (Are they even boyfriends? Wooyoung mulls over the thought now and then but completely disregards it once he realizes how much of a schoolgirl he’s become)

The doubt doesn’t leave his mind however that maybe things weren’t as successful as he thought (hoped?) they were. That maybe this whole scenario with Nichkhun and him was completely onesided and god or Buddha or someone who’s got his hands on Wooyoung’s fate is laughing silently at how much of a fool he’s been.

So when he spots Nichkhun on the couch a day they both are free he feels a little anxious when he goes to sit next to him and Khun with his soft hair and beautiful eyes and gorgeous smile holds Wooyoung’s hand at the perfect time and without warning all of his fears and doubts drown under the boy’s presence.  So he sighs and leans and listens to the Thai boy talk about whatever he wants and feels the familiar pool of warmth form in his body from being around the older boy.

X

Wooyoung considers himself a very controlled person, heck he deserves a damn medal for just how much he’s held back with Khun.

He knows the relationship they have must be kept a secret no matter what but the fans love skinship too much and he’s forced to hug, touch and stare at Khun constantly. Now don’t get him wrong, he loves doing these things with Khun on and off camera but it’s the fact that he wants so much more that kills him.

So it’s only natural the day comes where Wooyoung loses control.

They’re in a waiting room after filming a show when the other members decide to go get drinks, Khun’s the one who suggests staying behind and something sparks in Wooyoung so he stays behind as well. They’re on the couch (a little too far apart than he would like) and Nichkhun is talking about something or the other involving Thailand. While normally Wooyoung loves the sound of the other boy talking (his stuttering and bad pronunciation is all too adorable) something else is on the Korean boy’s mind today something along the lines of how pink and plump Nichkhun’s lips look, Wooyoung wonders if they are as soft as they look, he wonders what they would taste like and then a pink tongue darts out and swipes at the lower lip of the said mouth and Wooyoung finds he really needs an answer to his questions.

He leans in to Nichkhun and the moment feels much more romantic than it should be and Wooyoung thinks there’s no one else he’d rather have a first kiss with than him. The Korean boy closes his eyes and holds his breath, mind going blank.

Unfortunately luck doesn’t seem to be on his side and a clumsy monster, otherwise known as Taecyeon, opens the door without warning sending Wooyoung sprawling back out of confusion and embarrassment. The big oaf doesn’t even look apologetic when he asks them what they wanted to drink; completely unaware he interrupted what was going to be one of the biggest moments in Wooyoung’s young life.

Wooyoung sighs and crosses his arms, sneaking a peek at Nichkhun is only met with disappointment as the other boy chooses to leave with Taecyeon and go choose his drink himself. Something uncomfortable settles in his gut but he can’t quite place why.

X

Luck continues to look down on Wooyoung from there on, but he really couldn’t have predicted this.

It’s been days since he’s had a conversation with Nichkhun and as much as he wanted to blame his full schedule he knows that before they always found time for each other no matter how many commercials or shows they had to film separately. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that Nichkhun was avoiding him the real question was why.

No matter how much he thinks about it, it all comes back to their almost kiss.

As much as Wooyoung tries to wrap his head around it he just doesn’t know why it would bother Khun, was he not ready? Did he not want to kiss him? Or was he just really embarrassed that they were interrupted?

The answer to the question comes all too soon for Wooyoung.

Everyone except for Khun is in their dressing room getting ready for their upcoming performance when Wooyoung’s hairdresser tells him to go fetch the Thai boy. An easier task said than done Wooyoung wants to reply but ignores it and steps outside the dressing room.

There’s a girl, blonde dyed hair and nose too perfect to be real leaning against the hallway wall. There’s a shrill giggle ringing around hall and Wooyoung is only faintly aware that it’s coming from her. There’s a ringing in his ear and he can’t take his eyes away from her. Or he should say the figure looming over her.

Nichkhun has a hand placed on the wall and another in a spot Wooyoung can’t see. (He presumes it’s on her) They're standing far too close to be friendly and the way her arms are wrapped around his neck leaves no room for imagination. Suddenly everything makes perfect sense to the Korean boy and Khun is turning his head to look at him and Wooyoung thinks he might have let out a noise but his bones feel heavier than ever and he’s only vaguely aware he’s running away. There’s a chill where his heart used to be and it’s bit ironic because his eyes feel like they’re on fire.

He’s not sure where he ends up but he knows he’s alone and as much as he tries not to think about anything the fog in his head is gone and Wooyoung realizes he’s made a terrible mistake.

The older boy’s strange reaction to the attempted kiss, the way he never initiated skinship unless it was on camera even the simple things Wooyoung mistook as romantic gestures seem so idiotic to him. Bile is rising up in his throat and his legs crumple underneath him. He completely misread Nichkhun, the situation is utterly hilarious but for some reason Wooyoung’s laughs sound like pathetic sobs.

He doesn’t notice when a door is opened or when familiar arms are picking him up off the ground and setting him on the hard surface of a table. The ringing in his ears is slowly subsiding but the feeling of disconnection is still there and Wooyoung’s brain can’t figure out what’s going on.

Something soft and moist is pressing against his mouth and he can feel a warm breath on his cheek and it snaps Wooyoung out of his daze.

Because Nichkhun is kissing Wooyoung and if things didn’t make sense before then certainly don’t now.

The Thai boy pulls away and touches Wooyoung’s face gently, his hands the Korean boy’s cheeks before he presses their foreheads together.

“I’m an idiot” Nichkhun whispers still Wooyoung’s cheeks.

Wooyoung lets out something that sounds like a sniffle before replying with a meek “Me too.”

Their first kiss isn’t perfect there are tears, snot, desperation and god knows what else but as imperfect as it was Wooyoung’s earlier thought was true; there’s no one else he would have rather had it with.

X

It takes a while to settle back into their old routine but at least this time Wooyoung knows it’s real because Nichkhun always initiates everything, their yearning touches, long hugs, soft kisses.

(And after a long concert when Nichkhun is sagged against him from exhaustion his mouth saying words in Thai, English and Korean against his skin Wooyoung thinks that maybe a couple of things are lost in translation between them but as long as Wooyoung can understand I love you in three different languages things will be alright.)
