Manly Deer of the Dawn

EXO Tales of Love

It was a quiet spring day. The breeze was light and the sun shined brightly. Luhan and his girlfriend, Mina, were sitting on their couch in the their apartment. Luhan sat up on the tan couch and played with Mina’s soft black hair as her head rested on his lap. She read silently to herself as she felt Luhan’s hand get slower and slower, weaker till it stopped entirely. She looked up to see Luhan’s eyes were closed, resting from a long week of EXO schedules. She stopped reading her book, putting it down at her side and looked up at Luhan. She watched him as he slept peacefully. He looked so tired; his face was paler than usual. She slowly got up from his lap and smiled at his sleeping form. Even in the depths of sleep, Luhan was still handsome. His hair was pulled back by two golden headbands that shined from the light reflecting on it.

Whenever Luhan comes home from a schedule, he immediately changes into better clothes and pulls his hair back with the headbands delicately. He doesn’t let Mina touch the headband, for some reason. He says he likes to keep them since it was from their Wolf promotions, their debut as a full 12 member group. But she was aware that there was something more. Their Wolf promotions were months ago, almost a year ago, but Luhan still wears it constantly. Regardless, he looked handsome in it. The headbands were clearly visible, pulling back his now dark black hair. Some large black pieces of hair couldn’t be held back by the headband and stood up in random places on his small head. She reached up to try and fix the headband’s position so that it could hold back the strays. As her hand grew closer to it, one of Luhan’s eyes cracked open as he stared at his girlfriend.

“Mm, Mina? What are you doing?” she immediately took her hand away.

“I was just going to fix your headband.” Luhan’s big brown deer-like eyes widened as he shook his head, moving his hands to shield it. Mina sighed and looked at him with her equally as big eyes.

“Why don’t you let me touch your headband? It’s every day with you and I really want to know.” She pouted cutely, making Luhan chuckle. Clueless, he thought. He opened his arms toward her and pulled her into a warm hug from behind. He smiled as he laid his chin on her shoulder.

“You don’t remember, Mina?” Now with a confused look, she turned her head to look at him, waiting for him to explain. He sat up, pulling his girlfriend close to her, feeling her soft skin against his hands, warm as her big heart. He sighed with a relaxed smiled and laid his head against hers.

“Bao bei, you’re silly,” he said. Mina furrowed her brows, wanting to look up at him but was conflicted with her body, oh so comfortable in the arms of the man she loved. She knew him well enough to know that he was smiling. She felt his chest on her back as it rocked up and down along with his childish chuckle. She felt the soft pressure of Luhan’s lips as they found its place on her head.

“It was the day we met, Mina,” Luhan explained simply. Mina’s brows continued to look  furrowed, attempting to remember that day that - just for that moment - just happened to slip her mind.

“I’m a bad girlfriend,” Mina scolded herself. “I don’t remember the day we met.” She felt Luhan’s strong chest rock again.

“You’re not a bad girlfriend, Mina. It’s doesn’t matter to me if you remember or not, darling. I like telling you the story anyway. The memories are always the same: beautiful and perfect like you.”

“So, tell me the story bao bei,” Mina asked of her sweet boyfriend Luhan after her cheeks stopped heating up. She felt the smile she loved form on his face as well as hers. Luhan nodded, his heart began to beat loud, his head leaning down to his girlfriend’s level and turned his face to kiss her cheek softly as he reminisced of that beautiful day at the making of the Wolf MV.

It was a stuffy day, the surroundings outside the walls of the MV recording were opposite of those inside: freedom, open space and endless light in the sun of the summer. But despite it all, Luhan managed to keep the smile on his face even if the heaviness of his eyes different. He waited patiently with his dongsaengs waiting for the recording, hair and makeup preparations to begin. One by one, the EXO members, red eyes from lack of sleep and yawning from within, stepped up to the makeup artist so that they could transform into the attractive young men that fans saw them as.

“Hyung,” began Chanyeol to Luhan as Luhan finished his makeup. “I like your hair, it suits you.” Luhan smiled. Truthfully, he was half asleep through the whole process, both hair and makeup.

“Gomawo Chanyeol,” he replied, taking a look at his blonde hair in the mirror in front of them. Luhan fiddled with it, happy with the results. He couldn’t help but snarl and growl at his reflection. Kitten, deer, and cute were names used to describe him. But he couldn’t be like that. This MV was supposed to be about the tough and fierce possession of the woman you love. Luhan touched his face, moving his small hands up to his hair, taking a good at it, satisfied and heading to the shooting of the MV. It was time to be fierce Luhan.

As the first shooting was finishing up, the next outfit was supposed to be used and the dance repeated. But, as the members changed into their next outfits, Luhan scowled at hs The frills on the bottom of his sleeves shook as he practiced the dance by himself.

“How am I supposed to be manly in this?” he complained.

“You look manly to me, Lu-ge,” Xiumin reassured him. “It’s just for a little while anyway.” Minseok was right, Luhan thought. Just for a little while in the outfits that moved with him as he walked. The next dance practice didn’t go as smoothly. Luhan had to stop to fix his hair, small strands of hair bothered him as they danced. Not all the hairspray in the building (and there was a lot) could keep these pesky hairs at bay.

“What are we going to do?” complained Hyejin, one of the stylist noonas.

“The shot won’t be good if he’s always fixing his hair,” the director complained.

“Maybe changing the outfits and hair,” suggested Luhan. He was hopeful that, perhaps, they would agree and give him a manly look. But, as management always was, they stubbornly disagreed.

“Ani, that won’t work.” Luhan pouted. He knew he didn’t look good; he didn’t feel good or handsome. What now? As he sulked during one of the breaks, he sat in a metal foldable chair staring into space.

“Excuse me,” he heard near him. He shook his head and looked to see where that female voice came from. On his right, he saw two brown eyes look at him shyly and smile. he gave his best smile despite his unhappy feelings to the girl. moved but he didn’t pay attention to a word she said. All that came through his thoughts was her beauty. Her pure black hair was pin straight, barely passing her shoulders. She was beautiful, so natural with no makeup that was too profound. Her plain white tee was complemented by a dark red cardigan and skirt near her knees. She radiated with youth and beauty. When her small mouth didn’t move anymore, Luhan looked at her into her eyes again, waiting for him to respond.

“Huh? I’m sorry, could you repeat that?” She smiled and nodded. Luhan noticed her perfectly aligned white teeth sparkle.

“I was just saying that I may have an idea to fix your hair,” she said, gesturing to his hair. Luhan caught a glimpse of her small hand, delicate and soft looking painted with red nail polish.

“Really?” he exclaimed, “What is it?” She took out of her pockets two objects and waved them around, to which Luhan thought was adorable. They were two golden headbands, thin with a twirl design to it. The light of the MV lights reflected off the headbands but also brought a clear look at the girl’s round face. She looked at him questioningly.

“May I try?” she asked. Luhan, desperate for a solution and more time with her, smiled humbly and nodded. She came to the level of his hair and gently placed one headband on the left side of his hair and again on the right side as the headbands passed through his bleached blonde hair. She smiled and took out a compact mirror from her front pocket, handing it to him. Luhan took it, their hands coming in contact. He looked at his reflection, focusing on the pesky hairs. For once, with the hairbands acting as pins, the hairs stayed in put for more than two minutes. The golden pieces of metal worked to the relief of Luhan.

“I’m glad it worked,” the girl said with a smile, “Being an assistant stylist has its benefits,” she said, chuckling. Yet, to Luhan’s disappointment, the smile slowly faded from his face. The girl, taking notice, pouted.

“What’s wrong?” Luhan sighed.

“It worked but I’m still not manly. I look so feminine and girly with headbands and frills on my sleeve,” he complained to her. The girl smiled, giggling at Luhan’s childish complaints. Luhan smiled at the girl, laughing at little himself.

“What’s so funny?”

“You are,” she began. “I don’t think you look feminine. In fact, you’re much more manly than the others to have courage to wear this,” she explained. Her sincerity put a smile on his face and warmth in his heart, making it skip a beat.

“Besides,” she continued, “The hairbands push back your hair and blend into your blonde hair, it brings out your eyes. It makes them bigger, brighter and not like everyone else’s,” she finished. Luhan couldn’t help but feel his cheeks heat up.

“What’s your name?” Luhan asked.

“Mina,” she replied, “Chang Mina.” He shook her head, delicate and gentle as he expected. As they stood there in silence, simply staring at each other, the director called the members back to set. As Luhan was about to leave, he turned back to Mina.

“Mina-sshi, thank you for your help and advice.”

“You’re welcome. Just always keep in mind that you’re unique. A deer among wolves,” she said smiling. “I prefer cute deers over wolves personally. That’s what Luhan means in Chinese if I remember, right? Deer of the dawn? I forget, I haven’t spoken it for years since I left China to come here,” she trailed off nervously, scratching her head.

“Keep up the good work little deer,: she said smiling before walking away, leaving Luhan smiling like an idiot before hearing the director call to him specifically. It was official, Luhan thought. She was perfection in human form. He had to see her again.

The couple, still on the couch, smiled as Luhan finished telling the tale. Mina felt the emotions of that day flow through her again like wild fire, filling her with warmth. She was so nervous and ecstatic when he found her after the music video was finished. But that nervousness that came from the two of them turned to love as the meeting became more frequent. Mina turned around, hugging Luhan and kissing him softly on the lips, a sweet peck.

“You’ll always be my unique little deer, bao bei. Always.”
