Fate

Forget me not

“Yah!  One of the staff told me you met Tiffany today!” Sunny shouted through the phone.  “Please tell me that’s a lie.”

“It’s true,” Yuri said softly before giving her ear a break as Sunny continued her rant.

When she felt it was safe, Yuri tried to appease her friend.  “Calm down.  I didn’t say anything.  She saw me painting and came over to introduce herself.  How was I supposed to know her session was cancelled?”

“I just knew something like this would happen!  Why do you have to be so stubborn?”  Sunny said in frustration.  She tried to put herself in Yuri’s shoes, but she couldn’t understand what she was thinking.

“I noticed the ring…” Yuri trailed off, suddenly at a loss for words.

Sunny let out a sigh.  “I didn’t want to say anything.  None of us did.  She has moments when her memories come back to her in fragments, but she remembered that very vividly.  She wears it in hopes it will trigger more memories.”  Sunny couldn’t help but feel like she was stabbing Yuri in the heart with every word.  Wanting to switch topics, she perked up a little.

“Well, what’s done is done.  Since both of you met, I guess you’ll just have to hang around more often so she won’t think anything is weird,” she said with a half-smile.  “But as much as you might be tempted to, do not, and I repeat do not mention the past.  Her doctor said she’s at a point where she is well enough to start regaining memories centered around the accident so it’s best to keep all conversation with her neutral.”  At that moment, Sunny silently wished things were different, but no one thought it would turn out the way it did.

“I’m just thankful I’m able to talk to her at all.  I….we almost lost her,” Yuri said, her voice cracking.

Hearing Yuri become emotional, Sunny started to get teary eyed.  “Okay, things are getting a little heavy.  Why don’t we pick this up tomorrow….same time, right?”

“Yes, ma’am.  And Sunny?”

“What?”

“Thanks.”

“Anytime, Yuri.  Anytime.”

--------------

Last night, I dreamt of you but I don't why.  I wish I could see you again...

--------------

“So we meet again,” Tiffany said as she approached Yuri from the side, hoping she wouldn’t scare her for a second time.

“Oh, heeeey Tiffany,” Yuri said, slightly unnerved.  She placed her brush and palette down on a makeshift table as she invited Tiffany to take a look at the picture.

Tiffany stared for a moment before scrunching her face. “This might sound like a strange question and I hope you don’t take any offense, but why draw the same thing?”  I mean, would there be such a dramatic change from last week that you would spend all this time painting it again?”

Yuri couldn’t help but laugh at her question.  “You know if you said that a few months ago, I’d have believed you.”

Tiffany could only stare back at Yuri with a blank look.

“I guess I’m not making much sense, am I?  I think the best way to help you understand is to show you rather than tell you.”

“Show me……how?” Tiffany said with a raised brow.

“It’s nothing weird, if that’s what you’re thinking.  Are you able to meet me here tomorrow night around 7?  What I want to show you can’t be seen during the day.”  Yuri waited for Tiffany’s answer as the other girl continued to study her face.

“Here….tomorrow night…just the two of us.  If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were asking me out on a date,” Tiffany said with a laugh.

“A date…no, no…I would never…date?  Whaaaat?  Nooo...,” Yuri trailed off as she started to feel flushed.  “So um, is that a yes?”

“Yeees…,” Tiffany said, somewhat hesitant.  She practically didn’t know the girl and yet a voice inside kept telling her it was okay.

“Great!" Yuri said a little more enthusiastically than she had hoped.  Slightly embarrassed, she quickly scooped up her things, shoving them into her bag as she stood up to leave.  "Well, I guess I'll see you here tomorrow night," Yuri said hurriedly.  "It was nice talking to you again," she rambled on, not even bothering to turn around.

"Okay, b-" was all Tiffany could say before watching Yuri walk off into the distance.  "I guess this is what they call fate," Tiffany whispered.
