A Day at the Beach

The Swimsuit

“Hyunnie, what’s taking you so long?” Yoona asked as she eyed a magazine that previously sat atop of Seohyun’s nightstand. The doe-eyed girl’s impatience was getting the best of her; even if she didn’t want to rush her girlfriend, she knew their friends were waiting for them already. “Didn’t the swimsuit fit you?”

“Um… Yes, it fit me. It was just a little tight on the bottom part but I already readjusted it.” Came the faint reply from the maknae, who was still inside her large bathroom. Yoona looked away from the magazine and bit her bottom lip to keep herself from smirking. She knew her girlfriend had… fuller proportions than their friend Sooyoung, who had lend Seohyun one of her bikinis for their beach outing. She pushed away her erted thoughts, but the anticipation of seeing Seohyun with the bikini on grew considerably.

“Come out already! I want to see you with it!” Yoona yelled, standing up from her sitting position in Seohyun’s bed and almost jumping in excitement.

“There’s a small problem…” Seohyun trailed off so quietly that Yoona almost couldn’t hear it. Yoona furrowed her eyebrows and walked towards the bathroom door.

“What is it?” She placed her hand on the doorknob. “C-Can I come in?” She asked cautiously.

“Yeah, please do.” Seohyun answered just as cautiously. Her heart was racing and it sped up a bit more as the door was opened and Yoona came in. The latter’s eyes grew and her jaw dropped when she saw Seohyun, who was looking at her own reflection in her large mirror, meticulously examining herself up and down with a small grimace. Yoona did the same, staring at Seohyun’s backside in complete awe, still oblivious to the reason behind Seohyun’s facial expression. But as her eyes descended to Seohyun’s assets, she noticed something she hadn’t caught on to in her erted stupor.

“What? Is that a… HAHAHAHA” The doe-eyed girl broke into a thunderous laugh as she held onto her stomach and crouched down. Seohyun turned around abruptly in order to face Yoona, placing her hands on her hips and glaring at her.

“Yoongie! I let you come in because you’re supposed to help me! Not laugh at me…” Seohyun whined, dropping her glare and pouting softly. Yoona slowly coalesced herself and stood up straight, biting on her lips to keep herself from laughing out loud again. Her erted side reappeared when she caught up to the fact that she was admiring Seohyun’s front this time. However, she did her very best to keep her eyes on her girlfriend’s and not let them descend to her luscious cleavage and perfectly toned stomach. “You realize my predicament now, don’t you?”

“A watermelon swimsuit?” Yoona shook her head and broke into a fit of giggles again. Seohyun only sighed; she couldn’t really blame Yoona. Anyone with a fair sense of humor would have laughed at it too, and that was exactly what she feared about wearing such bikini in public. Sure, it was y yet not too revealing, but its soft red color with black dots and the green straps were enough to get the point across. “Didn’t she say that the bikini she was lending you had been bought in Pacsun?”

“Apparently it was. Too bad Sooyoung-unnie really does think about food all the time…” The maknae lamented quietly. She turned around, appreciating herself in the mirror again. Yoona felt the urge to keep laughing, but by seeing the troubled look in Seohyun’s face through the mirror, she knew she ought to comfort her girlfriend in some way.

The two girls had been together for eight months and had been friends since childhood. They knew each other like the palms of their hands. Yoona knew that Seohyun was very self-conscious; ever since they were little, Yoona had always tried to get her involved and comfortable in her own skin with her extraverted and effervescent personality. Inevitably they had fallen in love with each other. It started with friendly touches and words that sometimes didn’t seem just friendly, until they not-so-accidentally kissed during a slumber party. The incident caused both girls to drift apart for some time, in which they both figured out their feelings. Yoona gathered courage through much worrying and tears, and confessed to Seohyun during a four day class trip in which they became an item. Even if it was their first love and they were scared and doubtful, they were already in love with each other and ready to face things together, one step at a time.

Now they were graduated, enjoying a short break before entering vocational schools. Seohyun had been slightly intimidated by the idea of her and Yoona not spending as much time together as before, being in different environments and around different people, but she was slowly coming around. They were focused on creating beautiful memories together by making every moment enjoyable, and Yoona didn’t want this day to be any different.

She sneaked behind Seohyun, wrapping her arms around the younger girl’s waist in a warm backhug, being careful of not making it too close but at the same time making it intimate, moving Seohyun’s long hair to the side and nuzzling the back of her neck. She closed her eyes briefly as she breathed Seohyun’s scent in and drowned herself in it. She opened them slowly and looked at their reflection. Seohyun was undoubtedly blushing and her breathing was slightly heavier as she placed her hands over Yoona’s on her stomach. Even if such skinship intimidated her and made her nervous, she couldn’t deny she enjoyed their closeness and cherished it in her heart. She was always thankful that Yoona took the initiative like this; taking things slow and making sure Seohyun was comfortable with everything they did. If only the maknae knew that their skinship had the same effect on Yoona; making her lightheaded and nervous, even if she seemed collected in the outside, yet loving every single second of feeling her skin touching Seohyun’s.

“You look great, sweetie.” She said simply, winking at Seohyun through the mirror. The younger girl was averting her eyes from hers due to embarrassment. Her gaze was fixated on their linked hands instead. “I want a taste of that watermelon.” Yoona flirted lowly into Seohyun’s ear, causing her to giggle and blush harder.

“You’re saying that now, but a few minutes ago you were laughing at me.” Seohyun said with a slight pout, finally meeting Yoona’s eyes through the mirror. Yoona let out another chuckle against the skin of Seohyun’s nape. “See?”

“It’s just that a watermelon bikini was completely out of my conception, Seobaby.” Yoona responded through her chuckling. “But you do look great in it. I bet you can rock anything with your banging body.” Yoona flirted again. Seohyun smiled and kept blushing; Yoona’s flirtatious compliments combined with her sweet displays of affection always soothed her constant overthinking of things and self-consciousness. This time, though, nothing Yoona seemed to say was enough to make her feel 100% comfortable with the idea of wearing the watermelon bikini in public.

“Yoongie, wearing a bikini in public is already a big leap for me. People staring and maybe laughing at me won’t make things any easier…” Seohyun trailed off, grimacing. Yoona grimaced as well, knowing the least she wanted was Seohyun feeling out of place instead of enjoying herself.

“Don’t you have any other swimsuits of your own?” Yoona asked, using her grip on Seohyun’s hips to turn her around so they were face to face. Because of their closeness, their gazes briefly vacated to each other’s lips before meeting each other again.

“I have a one-piece swimsuit I used for gym class, but I don’t want to look like an ahjumma either.” Seohyun whined before puffing out a sigh of defeat. “I guess I’d rather look like a watermelon than a granny. I’ll just… deal with the stares.” Seohyun muttered in a small voice. Even if she sounded convinced enough, Yoona wouldn’t have it. She knew just how shy and conservative Seohyun was and she wasn’t going to push past the girl’s boundaries when she wasn’t comfortable enough in her own skin. After a few nanoseconds of thinking it through, Yoona came up with the perfect plan to solve Seohyun’s problem.

“Change out of it. Let’s exchange swimsuits. I’ll be the watermelon.” Yoona proffered confidently, winking at Seohyun for a full effect. Seohyun widened her eyes and pierced Yoona’s with them, as if looking for even more reassurance in her doe-like orbs. The way they shone, with playfulness and confidence all over, provided enough sense of security and evidenced that Yoona was completely sure of her resolution.

“B-But the unnies will surely laugh at you! They’re more careful of not teasing me, but they are always so relentless on you…” Yoona removed one of her hands from Seohyun’s waist and softly touched the tip of Seohyun’s nose, stopping her rant.

“Who cares?” Yoona shrugged, making a vague gesture. “I love watermelons.” Seohyun’s features split into a wide, breathtaking smile before she threw her arms around Yoona’s neck and jumped slightly a couple of times.

“Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” She said over and over next to Yoona’s ear, still squeezing the doe-eyed girl. Yoona, who had been slightly taken aback by the hug, smiled just as widely as she ran her hands up and down Seohyun’s . The fact that she could make Seohyun happy and relieved like that was the biggest ego inflation for her. Seohyun slightly pulled away so she could look into her eyes, both of them still smiling big. “I really wish I could be as confident as you are, Yoongie.” Seohyun bit the inside of her cheek. She couldn’t help but feel slightly guilty that Yoona was going to wearing the watermelon bikini instead of her fashionable, baby blue one she had worked so hard to buy.

“Pfft, one day you’ll be equally as confident as me, or even more so.” Yoona assured, completely sure of her words. “I’ll make sure of that.” She added softly, her wide grin turning into an equally gentle half smile. Seohyun surprised her as she leaned in and kissed the corner of her lips lingeringly. When they pulled away and with their eyes still closed, Yoona cupped Seohyun’s face by the neck, nuzzling the tips of their noses together. Seohyun sighed against Yoona’s lips, enjoying the caresses of her girlfriend’s fingertips on her cheeks and neck. “I’m the one who should be thanking you, actually.” Yoona whispered.

“What for?” Seohyun whispered back, slightly pressing her body closer to Yoona’s.

“You’re so good to me, Seo Joohyun. I’d wear a watermelon swimsuit, a banana dress and even strawberry underwear if it made you feel better.” Yoona joked, her tone of voice still sweet and caressing. Seohyun laughed and hugged Yoona one more time. The latter, wanting to feel Seohyun’s full lips on hers again, pressed her lips to the maknae’s again, keeping them in place for a few seconds before moving them softly. The younger girl, who still couldn’t consider herself too much of a pro at kissing, followed Yoona’s lead and gladly kissed back, her heart fluttering inside her chest. Their lips parted and met softly three times, both of them smiling into the sweet lip lock.

“You are seriously the best, Im Yoona.” Seohyun whispered as they pulled away, fluttering her eyelashes against Yoona’s blushing cheek, making the latter giggle.

“I know. The best after you.” Yoona responded, smiling cutely. She knew they could keep on showering each other with compliments for days, so she checked the time before tapping Seohyun’s stomach softly. “I’ll bring you my swimsuit. You take that off and give it to me so I can put it inside my bag.” Yoona said as she forced herself to pull away from Seohyun’s embrace and leave the bathroom. Her heart was leaping inside her chest, both because of the sweet moment she had just shared with a bikini-clad Seohyun and in anticipation for the ones who were to come all through their beach outing. Biting her bottom lip in complicity, she went and got her own bikini to bring it to Seohyun.

“What is taking those two so long?” Jessica asked as she put on her sunglasses. All seven girls had settled themselves under some palm trees bringing along some plastic reclining chairs they had rented in the shore store.

“I thought you were the one who took the longest to get ready, but Yoona and Seohyun are winning right now.” Hyoyeon commented as she took off her summer dress, remaining only in her yellow bikini, ready to start her tanning session and attracting many stares (and even camera flashes) in the process.

“Knowing Yoona, they probably stopped to get food on the road. As if I hadn’t brought enough supplies already.” Sooyoung japed, eating one of her potato chips to emphasize her point.

“I hope they’re on their way already. The beach is too beautiful right now for them to miss it.” Taeyeon pointed out as she took out her phone and took a picture of the beautiful beach scenery.

In that moment, Sunny and Yuri approached them, bringing cold drinks for everyone. The other five girls couldn’t help but notice they seemed to be holding in laughter as they set their tray on the sand.

“What’s with you?” Jessica asked, taking off her sunglasses and raising an eyebrow at Yuri. The black pearl shook her head and bit her bottom lip to not let her laughter out, even though her whole body was already shaking from it.

“You’ll see it for yourself in a few minutes.” Yuri responded before sitting next to Jessica in the same plastic chair. The ice princess shrugged her shoulders and put her sunglasses back on, resting her head on Yuri’s shoulder. All girls felt silent again, except for Sunny and Yuri who would suddenly look at each other before snorting out short laughs.

“O-Omo…” Suddenly, Tiffany joined in the laughter fest, covering to keep herself from laughing loudly.

“Now you too, Fany-ah?” Taeyeon whined, raising an eyebrow at the Korean-American girl. “I want to know what’s so funny!” Tiffany pointed at something with her free hand, so all girls eagerly followed her pointy finger, wanting to know what the secret was already.

There, in the distance, Seohyun and Yoona were making their ‘grand entrance’; an overly confident-looking Yoona, with a fierce look on her face and wearing a watermelon swimsuit with some lace on the bottom half that made it look even more ridiculous. She looked confident and was surely rocking the outfit, but the slight perspiration on her temple gave away just how embarrassed she really was by the stares and laughs of the people around her. A few steps behind her walked a shy-looking Seohyun, wearing a mesh net dress over her baby blue bikini. She too felt embarrassed and guilty for the attention Yoona was receiving, but there was nothing she could do about it now.

All seven girls burst out in laughter after a few seconds of observing Yoona. Sooyoung was the least humored since she knew that if the other girls found out that the watermelon bikini was hers, they’d immediately and criticize her fashion taste hardly, so she only brought one of her hands to run through her hair (a common gesture of hers whenever she was nervous) and pretended to laugh along with the other girls.

“What are you pabos laughing about?” Yoona asked in a slightly angered tone as she and Seohyun reached their friends’ spot. She quickly met Sooyoung’s gaze, giving her a murderous glare to which the older shikshin could only place her index finger over her quivery lips, silently begging Yoona to not say anything about the swimsuit being hers.

“When did you become a fashion terrorist, Im Yoona?” Tiffany asked in-between laughter, burying her face into Taeyeon’s back, who sat in front of her in the same reclining chair.

“And you, maknae, how could you let her come with that?” Sunny inquired, raising an eyebrow at the younger girl. Seohyun giggled a little for her unnies’ sake.

“She wanted to.” She answered simply. Yoona couldn’t help but smile; Seohyun always knew how to avoid lying.

“You know what? We should get in the water already, before more people see you.” Jessica suggested with the usual irony coloring her tone of voice.

“I agree with Sica.” Taeyeon nodded her head towards the water, not looking at Yoona since she didn’t want to let out another of her ahjumma-like laughs.

“I suggest we all get up, Yoona gets in the middle of us so we can cover her, we hurry towards the water and then we split. What do you think?” Yuri suggested, clapping her hands together. Both Yoona and Seohyun looked at her in thankfulness. “Hwaiting, Yoona!”

“I love you, Yuri-unnie.” The doe-eyed girl made a heart shape with her hands. Seohyun couldn’t help but feel a little jealous, even if she knew it was completely unfounded. Jessica also looked at Yoonyul from the corner of her eye, but the ice princess knew better than to feel jealous.

“I agree with Yul. Get up, girls!” Sooyoung stood up and urged the others to do the same. Yoona quickly got herself lost among her unnies and Seohyun, desperately wanting to get into the water, where she’d finally be safe from the stares of third parties. “Let’s start walking at the count of three. One, two, two and half…”

“Just say three already, Sooyoung! It’s too hot when we are all close together like this.” Jessica whined, earning a slight glare from the taller girl. Yuri, who stood right next to Jessica, nudged the older girl.

“It’s especially hot when you’re right next to me, isn’t it?” Yuri whispered into Jessica’s ear, causing her to smile in complicity and blush slightly.

“One, two and three.” Taeyeon counted in a slight exasperated tone and all nine girls finally began walking.

Yoona grabbed Seohyun and backhugged her tightly, making both of them giggle and stumble as all nine girls walked together. They were getting awkward and inquisitive stares, which they pretended to ignore, except for Jessica who would silently tell them off with those signature icy glares of hers. Taeyeon, who was leading the group, sped up her pace slightly when her feet began touching the wet sand of the shore, and soon all of them were racing into the water while laughing their hearts out, not caring anymore whether people noticed Yoona’s fashion faux pas or not. The doe-eyed girl, in revenge for Sooyoung’s carelessness in lending her precious maknae such an embarrassing swimwear, jumped on the shikshin’s back and knocked her down to the water, causing Sooyoung to hit her several times when they resurfaced.

“Aigo, Yoong! Behave yourself!” Tiffany scolded, furrowing her brows at the younger girl.

“Mianhae, unnie!” Yoona responded in her aegyo voice, causing Tiffany to cringe and bury her face into the back of Taeyeon’s shoulder, wrapping her arms around the kid leader’s neck from behind.

“You should be apologizing to me, you choding.” Sooyoung muttered, still coughing out some water. Yoona threw a knowing smile on her way, to which Sooyoung quickly looked away and pretended she didn’t say anything.

“Yoongie!” Yoona’s heart fluttered when she heard the familiar calling of her beloved. It had been a while now since the younger girl had stopped calling her ‘unnie’. It still felt unfamiliar, but at the same time brought a nice sense of trust between the two of them. Seohyun swam to her and wrapped her arms around Yoona’s midsection, burying her face into the older girl’s chest. Yoona smiled contentedly and wrapped her own arms around Seohyun’s upper back, playing with her wet hair. The other girls looked at each other in complicity and continued with their own business, giving the maknae couple their privacy.

“It wasn’t so bad, see?” Yoona whispered, making them both giggle. “People had a good time seeing me wearing a watermelon.” The doe-eyed girl’s voice wavered and her eyes closed momentarily when she felt Seohyun placing a soft kiss on her chest.

“You make a really cute watermelon.” Seohyun flirted, tightening her arms around her girlfriend. “A very sweet and cute watermelon, indeed.” The maknae added, making Yoona blush.

“I want us to spend all of our days like this, just having fun with each other.” Yoona said as Seohyun pulled away from her chest and looked into her eyes. Seohyun’s hands were softly running up and down her spine, making her shiver. She looked around to see if anyone was watching them, but there wasn’t anyone around them but their unnies, so she cupped Seohyun’s face, caressing her porcelain cheeks.

“So do I. I didn’t really like the beach before, but today is being so much fun already that I might consider coming here with you often from now on.” Seohyun confessed, her eyes b with excitement.

“I’d love that.” Yoona admitted, mirroring Seohyun’s look of excitement.

“D-Do you think we’ll be able to do that when we’re already in our vocational schools?” Seohyun asked in a small, hopeful voice before biting her bottom lip. Yoona appeared pensive for a few seconds before smiling widely and nodding her head repeatedly, making Seohyun beam.

“Of course we will. I’ll make sure of that.” Yoona leaned in and pressed a lingering kiss to Seohyun’s cheek, making her close her eyes. “I love you so much.” She whispered zealously against her girlfriend’s skin. Every doubt concerning their relationship, which had tormented Seohyun every night ever since their graduation, vanished forever.

“I love you too, Yoongie.” With her heart overflowing with happiness, Yoona leaned in and sealed their pact with a loving kiss.
