Feeling Fateful

Simple Reasons

Sunlight streamed through the hundreds of green, summer leaves and onto Luhan's determined back as he pedaled just a little faster than usual. Today was the big day. His one and only chance. The sun shone brighter and the breeze swept calmer all for him. Fate was on his side today.

Today wasn't a day out of order, but Luhan felt something special was meant to happen. Something life changing.  And he was going to go with his gut.

His feet kept a steady pace of their own against the plastic of the bike pedals while he had to consciously remind himself not to grip the handlebars too tightly. Is this what it feels like to be nervous?

Luhan rounded the corner of his street and kept his mindset clear and forward. He let the smooth vibrations of the tires against asphalt calm his barely existent nerves. What was there to get worked up about, really? Yes, he was aware this was most likely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and if he didn't take full advantage of it, he'll only have a window to look through and a mind full of 'what-if's. Nerves had no role in this; and neither did waiting around on a 3-foot-tall wooden stool for 8 hours.

As the last stoplight approached, Luhan pushed his feet backwards on the brakes to slowly come to a stop before crossing. His bike was more old-fashioned; instead of having brakes on the handles, he preferred the original method. Coming to a full stop, two fingers pressed down onto the round silver button on the pole, scratched and worn from everyday public use. Just a crosswalk away from where his life would change.

Seconds upon seconds flew by as he waited for little green man to appear, signaling it was safe to cross. His finger tapped the rubber of the handles as he mentally prepared himself for the day ahead of him.

The cars halted and a second later the green figure appeared on the other side of the crosswalk. Luhan walked across with his bike still firm in his grasp, pulling it along and onto the cement with seconds to spare. The air suddenly got sweeter and the boy knew he was coming close. But not closer than usual; he was still going to be at the same distance. Something was different about it, though. This distance wasn't nearly the same; it didn't have the same meaning as the day before.

Luhan decided to walk the rest of the way. The streets were abnormally quiet today, except for the occasional cars roaming by or the few people that would race through every once in a while. He didn't mind it at all, though. In fact, Luhan liked it better than the everyday screeching of tires and angry citizens yelling through their phones. Not as many distractions, you could say. Perfect for the occasion.

Fortunately, Luhan didn't forget about his meds this morning. More commonly known as life savers. They were basically the only things that kept him from swelling up or suffocating on the spot. But they weren't always necessary; just most of the time. As in five days a week.

Continuing down the sidewalk, Luhan arrived, just a tad too early. Securing his bike in the first spot on the bike rack, he locked the front tire to the metal bars. He inhaled deeply and smiled to himself before walking through the glass doors to what he should consider hell. But it was quite the opposite, actually. Thanks to a prescription, he was able to survive being surrounded by what some people would call 'nature's art'.

It wasn't a bad job. By all means, it was a full-time, more-than-minimum-wage paying job that Luhan thoroughly enjoyed. His shift lasted all day, which was out of the norm, but it wasn't a problem. Luhan was actually glad he got to spend more time being in a place he loves. His pay would increase, too, so he didn't complain.

The door swung open with a chime of the bell that hung just above. Luhan let the door close itself and made his way to the back room for employees only. He felt at ease being the only one on duty today. The job wasn't hard, and it didn't need many people to get it done. People just come in and ask for flowers, sometimes asking for which ones they should buy, or what the meaning behind each flower is; mostly for loved ones or a special occasion.

Luhan checked himself in, being exactly two minutes earlier than the required time. Feeling content with himself, he placed his card back into the designated slot and made his way to the dressing room to get into uniform. It wasn't much of a uniform, it was actually just a white shirt and a thick, green apron with his name and the company embroidered in the corner. It had its special pockets and such for holding the tools regarding the flowers, but he didn't need those now. He tied it securely behind his back and headed back into the shop.

He took his time with what needed to be done, but considering it was a Monday and the flowers were left uninspected over the weekend, Luhan needed to check up on some things. He needed to check the temperature, the water levels, humidity, as well as spray the flowers with a pesticide. Luhan didn't bother rushing since he knew business was seemingly slow today. Mondays were always the calmest days of the week, for any business, really, and he was thankful he wasn't caught up in all the dread Mondays always seem to bring. Not this one, anyway.

Everything necessary was completed and Luhan wandered to the back of the counter. He plopped onto the wooden stool and the radio. They always say flowers grow best when they hear music. That can be quite true for anything, or anyone, actually. Music can have many powerful effects.

Lowering the volume just a bit, he checked his watch once again and smiled to himself when he realized what time it was. It was 9:27 in the morning and Luhan looked up with his chin in his hand and his elbow propped on the table. Just three minutes.

This was another reason why Luhan loved the absence of people in the shop, especially on Mondays when there were literally no customers for at least the first hour or so of his shift. He got to sit on his stool and gaze out his window.

Luhan glanced at his watch again: 9:29. One minute. His fingers tapped on the surface of the counter as he watched through the window and into the coffee shop across the street.

Time slowed and Luhan couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement go through him. This was the one thing he looked forward each day. The reason he loved coming to a job he's supposed to hate.

It was now precisely 9:30 and Luhan watched with anticipation as his eyes glued to the door that read 'Employee Use Only' inside the building in front of the flower shop. Any second now...

Something seemed off, though. The coffee shop opened at 9:30, right? They were usually pretty good at being on time, but from Luhan's perspective, it looked like it was still closed. Luhan didn't see anyone inside, which worried him the most. It's already 9:30, past it even, what was Luhan waiting for?

Seconds and seconds passed and he couldn't stop his leg from bouncing up and down concernedly.

And then the door opened. And Luhan finally released the breath he didn't he was holding. There he was. The reason behind Luhan's anticipation. He was the only reason Luhan had this job in the first place. He could of worked anywhere, earning multiples of what he is now, but he chose the flower shop because it was right in front of the coffee shop. Right across from the one simple reason he loves Mondays.

Luhan rested his chin back in his hand and smiled as he watched the boy from the coffee shop finish tying the tan apron behind his back and start lifting stools off the tables, placing them on the floor. How could someone look so beautiful while doing a simple task? This was all Luhan could do for the past few months after he started working there. He was the only reason he started working there in the first place. This was as close as he could get. Or he felt it was; today was going to be the day he would take a risk. It might not seem like a big deal, or something to get worked up over, but the result had two possibilities, quite the opposite of each other: one could change his life for the better, which meant no more just glancing through the window or dreaming about what would happen if he took the risk and all went well. The other possibility could be that his life would be crushed. Rejection was one of Luhan's biggest fears and a simple 'no' had so many more effects than usually intended.

But that didn't seem to be such an issue today. Or, at least Luhan hoped so.

And that's when the coffee shop had its first customer of the day. Luhan paid attention. She was dressed rather professionally, but in an attractive way; even though her blouse was ed one too many from what Luhan could see. It was already obvious she was one of those kind of people. Someone who shows off, or selfishly marries for money, or someone who would target a person just for their looks. He couldn't help but automatically hate her. She was probably on her way to work, picking up coffee for her coworkers on the way. Luhan shifted in his seat as he kept watch. Just who does this girl think she is? Getting all close and leaning on the counter... just like a scene from a movie. Luhan scoffed and glared from afar, mentally cursing her.

Much to Luhan's pleasure, the boy didn't reciprocate and just did his job. He made the coffee with ease and handed her what she ordered, giving her nothing more and nothing less. Luhan couldn't help but mock her as she walked out with a holder full of paper coffee cups and a smug, defeated look on her face.

Both shops were empty now and Luhan could finally continue where he left off in peace. The boy in the coffee shop thankfully didn't notice Luhan's intense stares and remained at the counter. He pulled out a stool and some papers, eyes scanning them (from what Luhan could see). Seriously, how can a person be so beautiful? (Luhan was crying on the inside.) He didn't even know his name... After all this time, all Luhan learned about the certain male was that he never missed a day of work and was supposedly a "coffee god".

The next thing Luhan saw was the boy crumpling up the paper and tossing it into the waste bin sitting left of the counter. What was he going to do now?

He did nothing. Just sat there with his chin in his hand and his elbow on the table, similar to Luhan. He inhaled deeply and cutely blew his bangs out of his eyes; Luhan couldn't help but giggle at this little scene.

What happened next nearly resulted in Luhan choking on air. The corner of the boy's mouth lifted slightly and his eyes gained a certain glint that wasn't there before. He unfastened the first few buttons of his white button-up and rolled his sleeves up just a little further. He wiggled in his seat and Luhan wasn't sure if he should keep watching. His face felt a little warm and just what did he think he was doing, exactly?

Luhan remained in the same position but covered his mouth with his folded fingers, looking cautiously across the street.

And through the window the boy did the same.

Looking right at him.

Just as Luhan was doing since he came to work. Since he started working at the flower shop, period.

And Luhan was completely taken aback, confused even. What was he looking at? Luhan continued to watch, convinced it wasn't him the boy was staring at, but something nearby; maybe he didn't even see him at all. Luhan brushed it off and kept his gaze.

Time went by and the boy's eyes didn't shift one bit. Was Luhan imagining this? He could've sworn the boy was looking right at him. Luhan gave into his curiosity and hesitantly looked behind himself just in case there was something back there that was catching his attention instead. Nothing interesting, just a bunch of flowers and a table full of supplies. That wasn't really attention-worthy, was it?

Luhan slowly turned back and was met with the boy's eyes once again. He furrowed his eyebrows and the other boy just playfully smirked. Luhan couldn't believe what was happening. What was actually happening. He was looking at him. Luhan had a hard time breathing when he just realized for the past 3 or 4 minutes they had been staring directly at each other, and Luhan barely even knew. He suddenly felt like slamming his face into the counter.

He turned around in embarrassment so his back was facing the boy.

But wait. This could be it. This could be a sign, Luhan thought. This could be the starting point of that life-changing feeling Luhan felt on his way to work. The start of a brand-new life, one he's wanted for a while, now. So Luhan turned around to start it.

To see him resting his forehead on folded arms upon the countertop. Luhan wasn't sure how to react. He couldn't help but feel like he just missed his chance.

So Luhan folded his arms on the counter, as well. Instead of resting his forehead on them, he used his chin and tried not to stare too hard at someone across the street. His mind wandered off on its own for the next few minutes, his eyes stuck on something in the road; a piece of trash or something. Returning to reality, his eyes automatically shot up to his target.

To find him looking this way. Again. In the same position as Luhan.

Luhan almost caught himself drooling at just how handsome he looked. (How is that even possible?) And the slight smile he had... the softness in his eyes and just how nice and caring he looked at the moment. How could Luhan look away? And he was looking right at Luhan. Basically giving everything to him, his eyes only meant for him.

Or at least Luhan felt that way; and hoped, too.

Until the sudden chirping of the bell broke his trance, leading his attention to the door. Luhan checked his watch. 10:25. First customer of the day. She was a middle-aged woman, probably in her mid to late forties. She looked good for her age, and vaguely familiar, Luhan thought.

As the door slowly closed itself, the woman walked straight to the first row of flowers, trying to determine which ones she should pick. Luhan studied her face and decided to help her out. He walked up to the woman and held his hands behind his back.

"Are you looking for anything in specific?" He tried to sound professional. For a florist, that is. His words caught her attention and she turned her head to the side to face him before replying.

"Ah, not really. I'm trying to find something to send as a gift... to my son. Family issues; same old, same old." She waved her hand as if she were shooing something away.

Luhan decided not to press further. From what he could understand, she didn't have the best relationship with her son and wanted to send something to show she still loves him. That's actually a common case, believe it or not. Luhan heard it quite a lot. Flowers could always brighten someone's day, and of course, bring a family back together. Flowers had a lot of meaning behind them. That was another plus to the job. Working with something that has depth.

"I see." Luhan looked at the flowers in the rows around them. "But I think there would be something more suitable over there." Luhan smiled at the woman, "follow me." She silently trailed behind him while he lead her a few rows over to the chrysanthemums. One of Luhan's favorite flowers. They symbolized happiness and cheerfulness; perfect for any occasion, especially showing a person you care, or if you just simply want them to be happy.

Luhan motioned to the flowers. "These are chrysanthemums. They're usually sent to a person going through stress, or a rough time in general to try and cheer them up." He played with one of the petals. "But in this case," he looked at her, "I think they'd work perfectly." The woman nodded, showing agreement.

She smiled and replied, "I'll take them."

"Good choice." He grabbed the tools and gathered a certain amount of flowers to make the bouquet. After cutting and tying them securely underneath, he brought them to the counter for all the additional items to be added.

After giving the price and certain instructions if needed, Luhan offered, "now, are these to go? Or would you like them delivered?"

"Actually, now that you mention it, I'll have them delivered. I'm not ready for... any confrontation right now." Luhan nodded.

"Very well," he pulled out a paper and pen from underneath the counter, handing them to the woman. "Would you mind putting the name and address?" Luhan looked around, "and by the looks of it, we can probably deliver the flowers today. Unless you'd want a specific date-"

"No. Today is fine." Luhan was a little surprised by her suddenness. "Sorry, but I'm kind of in a hurry." The woman glanced at her watch before placing the money on the counter and heading to the door without collecting her change. "Thanks!" she called out and left the shop.

"You're welcome." He answered to an empty room. Luhan wasn't bothered by it, though. He liked it when the shop was empty. Remembering the delivery, he scanned the paper, sitting back down on his stool.

Luhan read the name in his head. Oh Sehun. It was a nice name, Luhan thought. His eyes drifted to the address, but it wasn't the typical address of a house. It was a name of a store. Or a coffee shop, for that matter. A certain coffee shop that made Luhan narrow his eyes. A certain coffee shop that struck interest and curiosity in him. It was the shop across the street. Which meant this "Oh Sehun" worked with his one and only. Apparently, the woman who came in was the mother of one of the workers of that coffee shop.

It was perfect. Luhan would go during his break (since he was the only one available at the flower shop; all day, actually), but this could be his chance. He'd go to the coffee shop to deliver the flowers and take advantage of being there to talk to a certain someone. Maybe he could buy a coffee or something? His plan seemed too good to be true.

Luhan checked his watch for what seemed like the hundredth time. Nearing 10:50, it would soon be time for his one hour lunch break. His only break of the day, also known as his only chance. So in about an hour, Luhan would take action.

He started getting nervous just thinking about. What if he messes up? What if he doesn't know what to say? What if the boy ends up hating him? You could say Luhan was thinking too much, but he's never really had the best of luck with these sort of things. Even in high school, too.

But now Luhan was getting worried. What if this doesn't work out? What if this totally fails? Does he even roll that way???

It was a risk Luhan would have to be willing to take. Do it or not, there could both be negative results. But one way had a 50/50 chance of success, and that was enough for Luhan to take it. The rest of his life rested in that one 50%. But really, it was just a normal flower delivery. Nothing to be afraid of. Anybody could do this.

Time flew by and it was now almost 11:45. Fifteen minutes until his lunch break and Luhan was getting impatient. He couldn't handle this stress or anticipation or whatever you choose to call it. He just wanted to do it and get the agonizing wait over with. The wait was always a thousand times worse than the actual doing. It was just 15 minutes, why not start his break a little early?

Luhan agreed with himself and put on his game face. He marched with confidence to the door and placed his hand on the door handle. He paused and thought a second. Was he really doing this right now?

No. Luhan shook it off. No thinking right now. Only doing.

He forced himself to open the door and step out. Inhaling the warm air, Luhan stepped aside to shut the door. Just to be safe, he locked it and flipped the sign to say they were now closed. He officially had no other choice than to go and do this. Luhan has never been so nervous in his life.

Straightening out his clothes, he realized he still had his apron on. Screw it, Luhan thought, it's now or never. Filling with determination and some sort of confidence, his feet brought himself across the street and in front of the coffee shop. This didn't even seem real. Was this all a dream? Will he soon wake up and be faced with the harsh, lonely reality again?

No, Luhan will make this dream come true. He has no other choice.

Okay. Luhan made a quick plan before marching through the doors. His hand still glued to the handle, he thought fast. He'd go in, ask the boy for the specified "Oh Sehun", give thanks and hand the flowers over (if he wasn't there, which, if Luhan was correct, he wouldn't be, since the boy seemed to be the only employee working so far), and maybe even brush fingers in the process. (Luhan smiled to himself at that last part.)

And now he was putting everything into play. He twisted the handle and carefully passed through the doorway when a whoosh of cool air hit him. The door rang a bell, signaling a customer, and Luhan prepared himself. He was now in the target zone. Using a hand to brush his hair back, he looked around. It was a cozy little shop and it smelled like coffee beans. But what else was a coffee shop supposed to smell like? Too Luhan, it was the smell of hope. Thankfully, the shop was filled with it and Luhan stepped towards the counter, mustering any courage he could find.

Should he stand in line? Or should he wait until the line is empty to make his move? Yeah, Luhan decided to go with the second option. But then another issue came up. What was he supposed to do while he waited?? The line wasn't terribly long, but it took a few minutes at least to make each customer's order. Maybe Luhan would just stand somewhere off in the distance and wait.

Luhan went in the opposite direction and parked himself in a seat by the window. He looked around for the boy and smiled when his eyes finally landed on him. Now he could get a front row view of the boy at work. The boy was doing his job at the counter, making and giving customers their coffee and occasionally returning a smile to anyone who gave him one. Luhan couldn't help but feel something close to jealousy. He shouldn't be smiling at anyone but him.

The line nearly came to an end and Luhan's time was getting closer by the second. It was now his turn.

He stood up and straightened out his clothes once again, inching towards the counter as he watched the boy wipe the countertop. He ran his fingers through his hair and inhaled deeply. Here's his chance.

A few feet to go and Luhan would probably be in one of the biggest confrontations of his life.

He came to the counter and the boy looked up. His eyes slightly widened and even though Luhan noticed, he didn't have one clue about what he was thinking. The boy stopped cleaning the counters and kept his eyes on the shorter boy. This wasn't quite the reaction Luhan had expected, but it's better than the much worse ones he imagined. But who was going to start the conversation? Luhan cursed himself for not thinking this through enough.

Before the painfully awkward silence could reach any further, Luhan took the first step and started, "Uh, theres a delivery for an.. Oh Sehun." Wow, couldn't get much more awkward than that. Luhan was almost having to hold back tears.

The boy lifted his brow, "a delivery? Where is it?"

Luhan froze. He didn't even bring the flowers with him. How the hell could he forget one of the main reasons he even came to the coffee shop? He blamed his nerves; but then again, he shouldn't of been nervous in the first place. The boy shifted a bit and playfully smirked, putting his weight on his straightened arms that were holding onto the edge of the counter.

The boy continued, "are you trying to tell me you're my delivery?"

That surprised Luhan even more. How was he supposed to respond to that? Does what he said have some double meaning? It does, doesn't it...

Luhan was at a loss of words. But wait. Did he just say 'my delivery'? "Wait, what do you mean your delivery?" Luhan was definitely going to beat himself up later for this.

"You said 'a delivery for Oh Sehun', right? If I remember correctly, that name belongs to me. And I'm still waiting for a delivery, by the way." He tapped his fingers on the counter.

Luhan wasn't really a fan of sarcasm and he faked a laugh at Sehun's words, even though he knew he was only playing around.

"I was supposed to bring flowers with me," he looked to the side, "but I guess not."

Sehun laughed through his nose and smiled, "I guess you'll have to bring them another time, then." Luhan pursed his lips and nodded. He was actually very surprised with himself how casual and easy-going he was starting to sound. This might actually get somewhere, Luhan thought. And if he wasn't mistaken, did Sehun just tell him to come back again some other time? Now Luhan was thoroughly convinced this was not real. This had to be a dream.

The amount of customers lessened and there were eventually only a few people throughout the shop, making it quiet and peaceful. Sehun didn't have to constantly keep up with all the business, so he had time to sit back and relax. He invited Luhan to sit and talk (he was screaming on the inside). Luhan had no other choice than to say yes. They walked over to an empty table in the corner and sat across from the other. Luhan had to keep reminding himself to breathe and not stare for longer than two seconds.

This was actually working out, believe it or not. Luhan's plan was going well; very well, actually. Even though it wasn't going exactly as he thought of in his head, the results were coming out great. Perfect so far, in fact.

"So what's it like working with flowers all day?" Sehun rested his chin on top of his hand, shifting his gaze from out the window to the boy across from him. Luhan placed both hands on the table and played with his fingers. He wasn't surprised that the boy knew about his job at the flower shop. I mean, he was wearing that apron, and considering the fact that a while ago they had just been somewhat unknowingly staring at each other from across the street, Luhan would be more surprised if he didn't know.

Luhan shrugged, "it's nice. I think it's fulfilling, money-wise and mentally." Sehun nodded.

"What about you? What's it like working with coffee all day?" Luhan paid close attention as he shifted in his seat to a more comfortable position.

"Meh, it's too boring. It's definitely something temporary. And I think for once, I'd like to come home with my sense of smell fully intact." Luhan chuckled at his response. "Besides, there's only one reason why I really took this job, anyway."

"And what's that?" Luhan asked.

Sehun smiled mischievously, "it's a secret." What a perfect opportunity to get inside Sehun's brain.

"A secret? Don't you trust me?" Luhan teased, looking at the boy with half-hearted pleading eyes.

"I don't know, you don't seem very trustworthy to me." Sehun returned the playful banter and narrowed his eyes to add to the effect. Luhan mockingly gasped.

"Me? Not trustworthy? Please, I'm the most trustworthy person in this room." Luhan used his hand to motion their surroundings.

Sehun paused. "Yeah, okay, there's like five people in this room. But if you insist.."

Luhan glared. "Ha-ha. Funny."

Sehun laughed, "just saying."

Luhan was finally starting to warm up to the boy. He was getting more and more comfortable with each word of their conversation and he couldn't be more pleased at where things were going. Luhan looked out the window when they were both running out of things to keep the conversation going. The silence went on for another minute or so before Sehun reminded Luhan of how much of an idiot he is.

"So about the flowers. How about you deliver them in a couple days, maybe? I'll be busy tomorrow, but I don't have work Wednesday. Does that sound goo-"

"Yes!" Luhan was getting a little too excited and mentally slapped himself. Sehun probably thought he was some obsessed freak by now. "Yes, sorry. Th-that sounds good, yeah. Wednesday, okay. Do.. do you wanna meet up somewhere? I mean, I'm free that day, too, and I don't have work, as well, and if you wanted we could meet up somewhere for me to.. deliver the flowers.. that I was supposed to deliver today, but-" Luhan was rambling. Probably wasn't the first, though.

"Whoa... calm down, Luhan," Sehun laughed at the boy's reaction and nodded, "yeah, we could meet up somewhere. But, you know, apparently there's gonna be some type of summer festival going on in the evening. We could meet somewhere near there, if you wanted."

Luhan was starting to blush. He knew the boy didn't intend it this way, but Luhan couldn't help but take it as Sehun asking him on a date. Or at least something like that. Maybe it was just imagination?

"O-okay. We can meet by the entrance." Luhan nodded, hoping Sehun would agree so he could start planning things out for his self-proclaimed 'date'.

"Sure. And I think it starts at.. 4, so just meet me then. Okay?" He ended with a smile and slowly made his way onto his feet when he noticed a group of customers about to enter the shop.

Luhan returned the smile. "Okay. Four it is." He stood as well and had to force himself to keep in his almost overflowing excitement. Luhan checked his watch and his eyes nearly shot out of his head when he noticed his lunch break was supposed to be over about 30 minutes ago. It was definitely worth it, Luhan thought.

They started going their own ways; Sehun going towards the counter and Luhan heading towards the door. With a smile and a small wave goodbye, Sehun then focused his attention on his job and Luhan exited the coffee shop.

With the door shut, he let out a contained squeal and giddily danced his way across the street, skipping happily and not even bothering to be worried or regretful for returning 30 minutes past the end of his break. Nothing could bring down his mood, and oh, was he looking forward to Wednesday.

Luhan smiled and laughed from just how happy he felt as he fiddled with the keys of the flower shop. Finally finding the right one, he inserted it into the slot and opened the door; not forgetting to flip the sign back to 'open'.

He walked in to find the flowers laying on the counter, and couldn't of been more thankful for his own forgetfulness.
