Chapter Four

Spring usually depicts days of bright and enchanting color, fragrance from the flowers and gentle warmth from the sun, yet as I sat on my room’s windowsill I witnessed a soft rain moistening every flower and fiber in the calm forest of our small town. The whether was wet but not gloomy, it was quiet still but not blue. In fact the soft pitter-patter sound of the drizzle amused me. It’s as if the weather was singing a song for me. Nice, comforting and pleasing.

This scene doesn’t come across often. Finding myself too engrossed into something that doesn’t even interest me in the past was fascinating. But maybe it’s just with the town’s mystical forest, with its trees centuries old that gave it’s mysterious feel. Legends say the kings of the old Joseon Dysnasty used to hunt boars, wolves and deer in this very forest. Just imagining how flourishing life is in these woods enthralls but scares me at same time.

Wolves in this forest that basically surrounds the entire town, how vulnerable the people and civilization be from ambush attacks of flesh eating wild animals?

“Yuki-ah,” my auntie suddenly called. “You have to meet somebody.”

Finally tearing my attention from the calm rains, I asked, “Who is it, auntie?”

“Dr. Zhang is visiting for your check up and a the town’s prosecutor is also here.” She answered. “He would like to discuss to you about some matters. Would that be okay?” then she reached out for my hand and sat beside me. “Would you be alright discussing those matters? He told me if you aren’t comfortable yet then he can schedule another meeting.”

“He came all the way here just to talk to me, I couldn’t be more rude.” I said. “It’s okay. It’s better talking about it than keeping it to myself and besides, I would like to know all details regarding the crash.”

My loving auntie gave me a warm smile and hugged me. She smelled like bake muffins, blueberry. She must be baking.

“You don’t know how much you amaze me, Yuki-ah.” She said. “You’re bravery and courage inspires the whole town, don’t you know that?”

I smiled. “I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one in the world and everybody is an inspiration. I’m just lucky enough to have you after everything else.”

“Now, now, we should hurry and better not keep those gentlemen waiting.” She said and we went together, holding each other’s arm. When we arrived in our living room, two men, one is Dr. Zhang in his white lab coat and another in a formal suite—most likely the prosecutor, exhibiting his towering height and sleek blonde hair. I wondered if he’s foreign. They both bowed and greeted us in which my aunt and I returned in respect.

“Ms. Han,” Dr. Zhang said, flashing his two cute dimples. “It’s been quite some time. How have you been?”

“Please take your seat, gentlemen.” My aunt said and excused herself. “I’m going to prepare some snacks.”

“Thank you, ahjumma.” The prosecutor said and the three of us seated in our small living room, I across the two.

“I’m fine, Dr. Zhang.” I answered. “I haven’t experienced any headaches or sudden discomfort these past few weeks. I think my health is coping up well.”

“Great to hear, Ms. Han.” Dr. Zhang said.

“Please, call me Yuki.” I told him.

“Ne,” he answered. “So Yuki-ssi, this is Atty. Wu from the local prosecutor’s office. He is a friend of mine and he also attended your parents’ funeral.”

“Please to meet you, Ms. Yuki.” He said and extended a hand for a shake.

“Nice to meet you too, Atty. Wu.” I said.

“Before anything else, I would like to check on you first.” Dr. Zhang said. “It’s better we make sure you are truly in great shape.”

“Please.” I answered and motioned him to proceed.

Dr. Zhang sat beside me with his medical tools enclosed in a black leather compartment. He checked my heartbeat, my breathing, my temperature and basically almost everything.

“You have such unique eyes, Yuki-ssi.” He said after he checked my eyes. “At first I thought they were deep brown but now I can see a tint of grey in them. You know, it’s uncommon for Asians to have this eye color.”

“I hope it’s still normal, though.” I said.

“Oh dear, don’t worry it’s perfectly normal. Just uncommon.” I smiled softly. Well, even I, myself, think that my eyes are very different. Sometimes I wonder if I have some sort of eye disease but I seemed to have no problem with my sight. After all, my mother is Japanese, hence my name, but as what Dr. Zhang said my eye color is indeed uncommon for Asians.

“Now, emotionally.” Dr. Zhang continued. “Do you feel depressed, Yuki-ssi? Frequently sad, scared, alone, or lonely?”

“I admit, I do feel sad sometimes but I never feel alone, lonely or scared.” I answered. “My auntie takes very good care of me and I feel a family with her.”

“How about at school, do you have trouble making friends?”

I breathed. “Well, I initially planned on keeping everything low and if possible to stay out of the public’s eye. But I guess it’s quite impossible with this cute little town. The moment I stepped into our school grounds, everybody knew that I was new or that I was from Seoul and I was the girl who lived through the crash that happened a month ago. Nonetheless they all treated me nicely. They all told me they’re very willing to help me move on and I’m very glad that they don’t pick on me for my accent.”

“Actually, Dr. Zhang,” My aunt suddenly appeared, with her freshly baked muffins and tea. “Yuki already met a boy at school.”

“Oh, jeongmal?” Dr. Zhang amusedly asked.
