1/1

You're 25 and He's Your Birthday Present.

“I told you guys, I really don’t want this.” Yongguk whined as he sighed down onto his sofa. He stared at his two best friends, Yifan and Dongwoo, who were sitting on the other two couches opposite from each other.

“Are you an idiot?” Yifan asked, causing Yongguk to pout to himself and fumble with his thumbs as if he was a child being scolded by parents. “Guk, you’ve been single for, what, 6 years now? It’s about time you find someone that suits you.”

“Aish, I’m happy the way I am!”

“Really,” Dongwoo says this time, “are you really happy? You’re turning 25 next week and you’re happy? Hm…”

Yongguk continued to pout. It’s not his fault he’s more interested in writing his raps and music rather than having a love life. Sure, he’s been single for a long time but it seems to bother his friends more than himself.

He’s the type of man who likes to have a cup of bitter, dark coffee while working diligently on his music. Romantics and dates and fluff and rainbows and unicorns don’t suit him.

He doesn’t like a lot on his birthdays either. He doesn’t like to get stuff from people let it be a blind date. His preference of a birthday is when he’s home alone, sleeping, doing work, watching TV and literally doing nothing.

“Next week,” Yifan began as he slammed his palm onto the table. “We set you up on a blind date. It’s on your birthday so you won’t forget. A great birthday present, isn’t it?”

Yongguk pouted again and gives a nod. He heard Dongwoo and Yifan laugh and they high five each other. “Anyway, I should be going now. Yixing doesn’t like it when I’m late for him.”

“Yeah, me too, my Hoya baby is waiting for me.”

And with that and a few pats on Yongguk’s back, the two left the fellow’s apartment. He sighed to himself and slumps back down onto his couch.

“25…” Yongguk said as he reminded his birthday was in a week. “25 and still single…”

Knock, knock

Yongguk groaned in his sleep.

Knock, Knock

“Go away!” Yongguk shouted and turned to the other side of his bed.

His door opened and revealed a young female friend of his, Jieun, walks into the room and shakes her head at the birthday boy in front of her.

“Yah, get up and get ready for your date.” Jieun demanded, shoving Yongguk’s back with his foot.

The man groaned and slowly gets into a sitting position. He yawned and scratched the back of his messy bed hair. “Why are you here?” Yongguk asked as he scratched his bare chest.

None of them really minded that Yongguk was shirtless. They grew up together and are practically siblings rather than childhood friends.

“Yifan and Dongwoo told me to get you ready for your date, you know, from a girl’s perspective.”

Yongguk groaned again at hearing his friends’ names. “I’m not awake.” He said and jumped down on his bed, covering himself with a blanket. “I’m sick, cough, cough; see?”

Jieun’s eyebrow twitched. “I’m going to count to five. If you’re not up when I’m finish counting, watch me dump orange juice all over your music.” The man immediately got back up, eyes wide open. He stared at Jieun who is smirking. “Good, now go brush your teeth and get ready for your date.”

“But I thought it was at 11am. It’s only 8am!”

“Yifan and Dongwoo are downstairs and we’re gonna give you tips on dates.”

Yongguk groaned and questioned what happened to his peaceful, work at home birthday.

“I hate you two.” Yongguk said as he enters his living room, shooting glared at the smiling/smirking guests. The man sat in the middle sofa as usual and rubbed his eyes. “I really hate you two.”

“We love you too~” Dongwoo answered with a laughter. “Are you excited for your date?”

“Extremely,” Yongguk sarcastically replied to Dongwoo with a stare burning through him. He turned to Yifan who was still smirking. “This better be worth it.”

Yifan laughed. “We promise you it would.” He answered and took a bite of a cookie from the table before looking back at the birthday man. “Anyway, about your blind date-,”

“Which I don’t want to do…”

“Excuse you, I’m talking.” Yifan said, his gaze causing Yongguk to whimper like a child.” So your date is with a young man name Kim Himchan. He’s one of Yixing’s and Hoya’s friends, a realistic doll, really. He’s pretty, not as pretty as my Yixing -,”

“Or my Hoya~”

“I’m talking!” – Yifan cleared his throat – “he’s multi-instrumental, maybe a benefit for your music progress. That’s all I know so far that Yixing told me. The rest is up to you.”

Yongguk pouted again. “But I can’t be romantic…” He said in a mere whisper.

“We’ll help you with that.” Dongwoo said. “Men have to take the lead! Ask a lot of questions and give a lot of compliments. Don’t just tell him that he’s pretty; tell him exactly how he’s pretty like if he has pretty eyes or a cute nose. Be exact.”

“Treat him like he’s the only person in the world.” Jieun added. “If he’s sipping a straw from a water bottle or something, give him a stare as if you’re asking yourself, ‘how are you so pretty?’ or ‘God made you perfect.’ It always works.”

“So…” Yongguk swallowed. “…make him feel loved or something?”

“Exactly,” Dongwoo shouted. “Now let’s have a test. Say something nice to Jieun.”

“Uh…your eyebrows are pretty…”

Jieun paused and squinted at the birthday man. “…I swear to god if we were on the date, I would’ve thrown my water at you before you even opened your mouth.”

Yongguk gave another pout.

“Just find something in common and you’ll be fine.” Yifan reassured but Yongguk thought otherwise.

After hours of practicing, Yongguk found himself ended up waiting for this blind date in the park. “This is so stupid.” Yongguk mumbled as he checked the time on his phone. “Where can this guy be?”

He waited a few more minutes and a silhouette began to walk up the path, catching Yongguk’s eyes. “안녕하세요 (hello),” a young man – Himchan – said as he approached Yongguk. He smiled lightly and Yongguk couldn’t help but smile back. “I’m sorry for being late. The bus wouldn’t come.”

“Uh, no, no, it’s fine.” Yongguk quickly answered. “I just got here anyway.” He added and Himchan laughed a little.

No doubt, the birthday man is captured by Himchan’s beauty. He had a fox like face and his bunny teeth show whenever he laughs or smiles. His eyes are a shade of unique brown and had a raspy like voice.

“You’re Himchan-sshi, right?” Yongguk asked and Himchan nodded, brushing his bangs out of his eyes.

“And you must be Yongguk-sshi…?” Himchan playfully questioned back. Yongguk laughed and gives a nod, hiding his gummy smile behind his palm.

“Um, have you eaten yet?”

“Not yet.”

“Really…? Um, alright, how about we get something to eat first and then…you know, this date.”

Himchan gave a small giggle and nodded. He walked with the older man by his side, both awkward. “So, how old are you?” Yongguk asked, hoping to bring up the weird atmosphere around the two.

“I’m 24, turning 25 next month.”

“Mhm,” Yongguk nodded, “I’m older then. I turn 25 just today.”

Himchan gave a small gasped and clasped his palms together, “Oh really? Happy Birthday then~ If I had known, I would’ve got you something.”

Yongguk laughed, causing Himchan to giggle along. “Nah, it’s alright.” Yongguk answered. “It’s because of my birthday that my friends set me up on this date. I’ve sorta been single for too long.”

Himchan giggled again. “I understand.”

Silence

Awkward

“Oh, here we are.” Yongguk said as he guided Himchan to a small restaurant. The waiter led the two of them to a table of two and Yongguk, being the man, orders their dish. Of course, they sat in silence to wait for their food. “So, uh, what do you major in?”

“Art and music,” Himchan answered as he placed his glass of water down and Yongguk nodded.

“Ask a lot of questions and give a lot of compliments. Don’t just tell him that he’s pretty; tell him exactly how he’s pretty, like if he has pretty eyes or a cute nose. Be exact.”

“You have pretty fingers.” Yongguk said and Himchan gave a shy smile. “They’re long and slim. Do you play any instruments?” He asked and knew that was a hit question. The older man mentally applauded himself and noticed the small blush on Himchan’s cheeks.

“I play multiple instruments.” Himchan answered with an approving nod and Yongguk nodded back.

“What kinds of instruments?”

“Um, guitar, piano, violin, traditional drums and flute…”

Yongguk’s eyes slowly widened at each word. “Wow,” he said and Himchan blushed deeper. “You’re so talented.”

Himchan covered his smile with his hand and gave a small laugh. “Thank you.” He said, lightly fanning himself to calm his heated cheeks.

Yongguk smiled at the younger one’s action. “Cute,” he said and fortunately for Himchan, their order arrived. “Here, I’ll cut it for you.” Yongguk said and Himchan watched as the older begins to cut the pork cutlet for him.

“Thank you…”

Another awkward silence except for their eating

“So, have you date many?” Yongguk asked, biting into his pork cutlet.

“Um, not really,” the other replied, “I’m pretty shy and timid.”

“It seems like you been hurt before.”

“Um, I guess you can say that. I fall for people too easily so I get easily hurt too. A few words can make me happy or sad.” – Yongguk nodded along – “if a guy calls me every night and then all of a sudden doesn’t for one night, I get nervous.”

“Yeah, I understand. It suddenly makes you feel like they don’t like you anymore right?”

Himchan nodded.

Another awkward silence

“Oh, why am I so nervous?” Yongguk asked with a small laugh, his gummy smile showing that made Himchan laugh along as well. “I normally don’t get this nervous.”

“What are you usually like?”

“I’m very calm and collect even though I don’t look like it.” Yongguk answered and laughed again. “I make raps and music as a living and I guess you can say it’s my passion or something.”

“I know how you feel. It’s the same with my instruments and me. You find something you feel you’re good and doing it makes you happy.”

“You seem cheerful.”

“I always laugh even at things that aren’t funny.” Himchan answered with a small chuckle. “I laugh when it’s boring. I laugh when it’s fun.”

“Is it fun now?”

Himchan giggled. “It’s a little awkward but it’s fun.”

“I’m having a lot of fun.” Yongguk said and Himchan nodded. “I’m nervous but when I see you…” He paused and stared at the young man in front of him, which is making his cheeks heat up a little, “I can’t help smiling, you see?” – Himchan giggled – “My cheeks hurt a lot right now.”

The younger let out a bunch of giggles like a schoolgirl. “I think you’re adorable when you smile.” He said. “You have a manly aura but when you smile, you’re little a child, so cute.”

Yongguk blushed deeper. “Haha, thank you…so um, shall we continue this date?”

Himchan smiled before giving a nod, “That would be nice. Let’s go.”

Yongguk smiled again. He might actually take a liking to his date.

After lunch, the blind date couple walked side by side with each other as they strolled through the various shops of the open mall.

They bought bubble tea and tried on various types of hats and toys and ice cream and thoughts. Himchan seemed to smile brighter and brighter as time passes and Yongguk seemed to enjoy that.

The younger was a real beauty whenever he smiles.

“You said you liked amusement parks right?” Yongguk asked as he sipped his taro bubble tea. He looked over at Himchan who was busy chewing on the bubble. “I’ll take you to a fun, refreshing, happy…”

“…a water park?”

Yongguk smiled and shook his head. He made an ‘it’s a secret’ sign with his finger and Himchan giggled. The younger felt the older man slip their fingers together and Himchan blushed, staring up at Yongguk. “Your hand keeps brushing against mine. It hurts. So let’s hold hands instead.” Yongguk said and smiled, leaving Himchan in a melting mess.

They entered an ice skating rink and Himchan was amazed. “It’s pretty here.” He said. “It’s even snowing.”

“It’s cool here right?” Yongguk asked and Himchan nodded. The older noticed he was rubbing his bare arms and asked, “Are you cold?”

“A little…” Himchan answered and Yongguk gently took off his zip up sweater and wrapped it around the younger. “Thank you…”

Yongguk smiled and led the two of them onto the ice. “You look even prettier in here.” He said, teasingly backing away from the younger with a gummy smile because he wanted to joke around.

“Where are you going?”

“Come here~ Come here~” Yongguk playfully said as he clapped his hands together as if the younger was a puppy. Himchan giggled and followed along with the older, his arms stretched out to him. “You look so pretty.”

“Oh goodness,” Himchan said as he almost slipped on the ice, fortunately Yongguk caught him. The two blushed at the sudden contact. “S-sorry,” the younger squeaked as he broke apart from him, causing Yongguk’s heart to die a little.

“It’s fine…”

The two skated around for a while, well, Himchan didn’t know how to skate so it was lucky for Yongguk that he could teach the younger one.

“Right foot, left foot, right, left,” Yongguk counted as he held onto Himchan’s small hands for his balance. Himchan giggled along because he knew he’s not skating well and that he at t but Yongguk’s holding his hand, so overall it’s not that bad.

This time Yongguk stood in front of the Himchan and was slowing skating backwards, pulling Himchan forwards by his hands. The younger let out a squeak and crashed onto Yongguk’s chest.

“Why aren’t you moving~” Himchan whined cutely and Yongguk couldn’t help but break into a smile. He poked the younger’s nose and shook his head, causing Himchan to pout. “I can skate well with you but not by myself.”

“Because we’re a couple,” Yongguk easily said and they both broke into a smile.

Frankly, Yongguk felt great to have Himchan by his side. He realized that he has been unknowingly feeling lonely and empty these past years. Meeting and being with Himchan with the date and eating together, talking and skating, and holding hands, he didn’t feel empty at all.

“Can we skate another lap?” Himchan asked and Yongguk couldn’t say no to that smile.

But as the couple was enjoying their date, something else was happening…

“Papa bear to mama bear, do you hear me?” Yifan asked through the walkie-talkie as he hid behind the railing on the second floor of the ice rink.

“Why do I have to be mama bear?” Dongwoo asked through the walkie-talkie

“Fine,” Yifan said with a roll of eyes, “Papa bear to Goldilocks.”

“I hate you.”

“You both are idiots.” Yixing said as he and Hoya walked up to their boyfriends who were literally right next to each other. “I don’t understand why you’re spying on Yongguk. He’s obviously enjoying his date.”

“That’s the point, baby.” Yifan replied. “What’s so fun about setting him up on a blind date and not spying on them? Aw look, they’re hugging…wait, they’re hugging. OH MY GOD, THEY’RE HUGGING.”

“Keep it down, you idiot.” Yixing shouted as smacked the back of Yifan head. “They’re going to see you.” He said but neither Yifan nor Dongwoo complied.

Hoya sighed next to him and shook his head. “They’re idiots. Come on, Lay. Let’s go get some ice cream.”

“You have some snow on your hair.” Himchan said with a giggle as he was brushing the fake snow off of the older’s hair. Yongguk smiled and did the same to the younger. To Yongguk, it was like time stopped and all he could see is Himchan’s eyes. He looked like an angel.

“You have a lot on your hair too.” Yongguk playfully replied, both of them not noticing the two squealing adults on the second floor *cough* Yifan and Dongwoo *cough*

Yixing and Hoya had just come back from the ice cream booth and noticed their boyfriends on the floor, squealing of fluffiness and unicorns and puppies and rainbows.

“What’s wrong with you guys?” Hoya asked as he poked Dongwoo’s cheek. His boyfriend couldn’t say a word and pointed downstairs to the couple. And when Hoya and Yixing looked, they both gasped.

“Oh my gosh, they’ve gone nuts.”

“They’re really head over heels.”

The four stared down at the couple who had decided to lie down together on the fake snow with Himchan’s head on Yongguk’s arm as they looked up at the ceiling.

“I’m jealous.” Yixing said and Hoya nodded along, shooting glares at their own boyfriends.

“I really enjoyed today.” Himchan said as fake snow was falling down onto his palm. He stared up at the ceiling and then at Yongguk who was smiling at him. “Your friends are Yifan and Dongwoo right?” – Yongguk nodded – “their boyfriends, Yixing and Howon, decided to set me up with you. At first I didn’t want it but then I just took a chance. And I’m glad I did.”

Yongguk smiled warmly and Himchan decided to snuggle onto the older’s chest. Luckily there was actually no one around to their surprise.

“We should get going.” Yongguk said after a long period of silence. “I’ll walk you home.”

“It’s okay. I’ll be fine on my own.”

Yongguk laughed. He entwined their fingers and stared into Himchan’s eyes. “I’ll walk you home.” He repeated and noticed the younger’s cheeks lit up.

They hold hands naturally now as they walked through the streets (with Dongwoo and Yifan following behind them). Himchan giggled from time to time at Yongguk’s stupid jokes and Yongguk smiled from time to time at Himchan’s cute blushes.

They bought a large cup ice cream too, one actually, because they were sharing it. “You know, I never did really like mint flavor.” Yongguk said as he bit into his spoon. He smiled at Himchan. “Maybe it’s because I’m eating it with you.”

Himchan giggled. “This is our first date. You’re really cheesy.” He said and stopped once they arrived in front of the younger’s apartment building. “Well, this is my stop.” He said. “Thank you for today, Yongguk-sshi.”

The older smiled. “Is it alright if we can drop the formalities and just comfortably call each other?”

“But you’re older than me.”

“Only by a month,” Yongguk said and shrugged in an ‘it’s no big deal’ way. “Can I just call you Himchan?”

“Of course,” the younger replied easily, “Yongguk.”

Yongguk smiled as he heard his name called so comfortably from the younger’s mouth. “Oh um, how about we give each other our numbers, you know, so we can do this again?” Yongguk asked and Himchan didn’t need to be told twice to take out his phone.

They punch in each other’s numbers and then just stood in silence.

“Um…” Yongguk began again, “Can I…um…” Himchan giggled. He gave a nod and closed his eyes as the older began to lean in.

Their lips touch and Yongguk could feel Himchan’s soft, pink lips against his. It was like he could tell the future as a flash of vision appeared through his mind with his lips still pressed against the other. He pictured his future with Himchan and knows they’re perfect for each other. They’re going to stay together forever and have kids and pluck out their gray hairs once they turn old.

Himchan smiled against the kiss that seemed to have been forever. He slowly backed up and stared into Yongguk’s eyes. “That was nice.” He said.

Yongguk smiled and nodded. “It was. You’re lips are sweet, like strawberries.” He teased and it made Himchan giggle.

“Still with the cheesiness,” Himchan said and lightly flicked the tip of Yongguk’s nose. “I should get back to my apartment now.” He said and Yongguk pouted when their hands broke apart. “Thanks again for everything.”

Yongguk smiled and watched as Himchan entered the lobby and up the elevator. He gave a sigh of contempt and just stood there, smiling as if he was crazy.

“I’m 25 and still single.” He said to himself and touched his lips that still had a small taste of strawberries, “But not anymore.”

Now that would’ve been a great way to end this story but no, of course Dongwoo and Yifan rushed down the street and literally jumped onto the birthday man, squealing and puking out rainbows and puppies.

“You finally have someone!” Dongwoo shouted. “Now we can have triple dates and sleepovers and parties and, -!”

“Ah no,” Yongguk said but secretly, if it was to have Himchan by his side again, then yes.
