                  what. a. mess!

» “Byun Baekhyun and Bae Chanseul! Stop eating those chocolates! They’re for desserts!”

“Oh Sehun! Where are those balloons? Don’t tell me you haven’t put air into them!”

“Uh, hyung. I think we’re running out of balloons-“

“What?!” I almost pulled all my hair when I let my eyes see what’s going around me. We were supposed to prepare a surprise birthday party for my girlfriend, Park Jea but unfortunately, my friends kept on messing around and I’m pretty sure this place will still be a mess when she arrives from her dance practice.

“Hyung, I think Chanseul ate all the chocolate-“

“Hey! I did not!”

“Yes, you did!” Baekhyun walked back to the kitchen while arguing with Chanseul. I shook my head, wondering how those two became a couple when Chanyeol arrived, carrying a bouquet of roses and a box of chocolate.

“Here you go, Joonma. This is the last box of chocolates and I swear if you send me back to the mall, I will kill-“

“Why did you buy those? They are overrated, in case you don’t know.” Jong In came forward and crossed his arms over his chest and a frown formed on his face. I heard a growl escaped from Chanyeol’s lips as he prepared himself from lunging towards Jong In, who seemed unfazed by Chanyeol’s behavior.

“This is… fine, Chanyeol. Thank you.” I mumbled as I walked towards Chanyeol and grabbed the bouquet of roses and the box of chocolate from him. Chanyeol threw a victorious smirk at Jong In, who still seemed like he was unmoved by everyone else’s actions.

My phone rang and I quickly fumbled through my pocket, trying to find my phone. I heard Chanyeol shout some incoherent words but I was too busy finding my phone to even take notice of it.

 I didn’t feel the weight of the roses and the box of chocolate anymore, which caught my attention in a split second. The box and the bouquet have fallen down on the floor while Chanyeol was crying out loud, screaming something about the chocolate being squished or something while Jong In comforted him.

“What’s going on-“

“Hey, I told you, we’re still not done arguing!”

“Just shut up, hyung!” Sehun came out of the kitchen with his hands over his ears while saying, “Lalala,” over and over again. Ugh, these kids are giving me a headache.

“Where are the others, anyway?” Kyungsoo went down from the stairs with the streamers in his hands while his eyes were wide open, a typical look from him. At least, someone is cooperating right now.

“I don’t know. Maybe they went to buy some cake or something-“

“What?! So you mean is that we still don’t have a cake?” I momentarily forgot about my ringing phone and threw a glare at everyone in the room but they merely ignored me.

“Is there a chicken-flavored cake, hyung?”

“No, there isn’t. Jong In, why are you so disgusting?” Jong In threw a glare at Chanyeol, who just stuck out his tongue at him childishly. Jong In turned to Kyungsoo, who was hanging up the streamers while standing on the chair.

“Kyungsoo-yah, is there an anime inspired cake?”

“I think so. But I don’t think Jae likes that.” Jong In walked away, muttering a string of curses as Chanyeol laughed at pointed his finger at him repeatedly.

My mind flew back to the ringing phone of mine and I quickly fumbled through it, careful not to hit the ‘reject’ button.

“Hello?” I tried to make my voice normal and steady as I tried to block out the argument of Chanseul and Baekhyun coming from the kitchen while Sehun yelled louder to cover up their argument.

“Joonmyeon? Is that you?” I heard the tired voice of Jea and I quickly softened up once I heard it. Her voice really sounds like an angel, no doubt. I ignored everyone else’s voices as I tried to set my mind on her and only her.

“Mhm, it’s me. Are you done practicing, jagi?” I heard her sigh over the phone and the water bottle being thrown on the floor. I copied her sigh, which earned a laugh from her.

“You’re so adorable.” She chuckled over the phone, which made the corners of my lips rise up in contentment.

“Well, you’re adorable, beautiful and talented.” I said and another chuckle escaped her lips before she spoke again.

“Ah, shut up. Anyway, do you know what day is today?”

It’s your birthday.

I wanted to say but I kept my lips sealed as I tried to contain my laughter, which was dying to burst out of my mouth right now.

“Well, today is March 17 and it’s a Monday.” I nodded, even though she can’t see it, and another smile formed on my lips.

“Other than that?” Her voice became slightly shaky as she anticipated my answer. She’s probably worrying if I remembered her birthday and I was dying to say that but of course, I don’t want to say my surprise to her, right?

“It’s… Chanseul’s birthday?” I made my voice sound unsure, which made her sigh in discontentment. I bit down on my lip from revealing my secret to her when she spoke up.

“No, it isn’t. Anyway, I won’t be going home today.”

“Wait, why not?!” I accidentally shouted over the phone and I can imagine her cringing slightly before she can regain her posture.

“Because,” She paused for a while and let the silence take over our conversation before she spoke up again, “Because you forgot about someone’s birthday.”

Then, the line ended and I just stood there with my jaw hanging. Jong In popped out of nowhere and looked over my phone before averting his eyes towards me.

“Hyung, judging from your reaction, I bet Jea noona is angry at what you said to her. What did you say to her?” He narrowed his eyes at me and waited for my response but I just stayed silent and averted my eyes towards my phone.

“I-I think I need to go.” I hurried towards the couch, where my coat was placed and quickly wore it, ignoring the others’ questions. They screamed my name but my ears were closed when it comes to them and I ran out of the apartment, leaving them pondering on what’s happening.

Ah, why am I so stupid?

I ran mindlessly through the streets, wondering where she could be right now. I ran past the shops she loved visiting when we’re on a date but those shops are either closed or empty.

Where could she be? I ran through the list of her favorite places and my eyes widened when I arrived at the end of the list.

The park! Of course, why didn’t I think of that earlier?

I happily ran towards the park; my feet made me felt like I was weightless as I kept my mind alert if I ever pass by the park. My feet were suddenly put into a halt when I saw a figure sitting on the swings.

A smile curled up on my lips as my eyes sparkled happily when I realized that it was Jea.

“Jea!” I ran towards her and I wanted to face palm myself when I realized I was skipping my way towards her. Even though it was quite dark, I could easily identify the features etched on her beautiful face.

I slightly bent my body and placed my hands on my knees as I tried to catch my breath. She stopped swinging and placed her feet firmly on the ground, waiting for my response.

After a few seconds, I straightened my body and stared straight at her eyes, which softened a little.

“I-I’m sorry.” I croaked out as I approached her and knelt in front of her. Her eyes slightly widened in shock but it went back to normal but her eyes still softened a bit.

“I was preparing a surprise birthday party for you but,” I paused for a while and let the information I said to her sink for a while. She opened to say something but I beat her to it.

“You called and said you won’t go home today.” I slightly lowered my head and held her hands, gently letting my thumb rub her hand.

“Idiot.” She called out and I raised my head, only to be greeted by a kiss on my cheek. My eyes slightly widened in shock as I held my cheek with my hand. Her cheeks heat up in embarrassment and a smile both formed on our lips as a chuckle escaped my lips.

“Yes, I’m an idiot,” I paused and gave her a wide smile, which made her frown slightly in confusion.

“An idiot for you, that is.” Her cheeks heat up once more as she grabbed my coat and hoisted me up, which was quite a surprise since I was heavier than her. She buried her face against my chest and a laugh escaped my lips as I ran a hand through her hair before placing a quick kiss on top of her head.

She raised her head and looked at me with a smile etched on her face before I hoisted her up as well. I s an arm around her waist and sneaked a small peck on her lips, which caught her off-guard.

“H-Hey,” She hit my chest and a pout formed on her lips as I let a laugh escape my lips. I stopped for a while and went in front of her, holding her by her shoulders, staring straight at her eyes. Her eyes were clouded with confusion and anxiety as she stared back at me.

I went nearer and captured her lips fully, which caught her off-guard once more. I held her shoulders so she won’t fall. I felt a smile form on my lips when I felt her kissing back. She wrapped her arms around my neck as I placed my arms around her waist.

We stayed in that position, just feeling each other for a while before I reluctantly pulled away. Her eyes fluttered open and she stared at me with a smile on her beautiful face. I pecked her forehead and pulled her close to me, feeling blissful.

“Happy birthday, jagi.” I whispered in her ear, which earned a giggle from her. She tiptoed and placed a quick kiss on my cheek before grinning from ear to ear.

“Thank you.” She leaned her head against my chest and a chuckle escaped my lips as I ran my hand through her hair before placing a quick kiss on top of her head.

She looked up and a smile formed her lips before she asked me.

“Is the birthday party still a surprise for me?” I chuckled as I pulled away from the hug and I clasped my fingers around her hand, flashing a quick smile.

“Yes, but unfortunately, you won’t be surprised anymore.” I slightly jutted out my lip, which made her laugh and peck my cheek once more.

“Oh, don’t worry. I can act like I was surprised. I’m a professional when it comes to that.” I raised an eyebrow at her before I asked her.

“Are you sure?” She nodded her head before she started to walk, a smile evident her face.

“Definitely.”
