Lesson 5

Lessons of the Heart

Daisy’s pencil moved on the page of her notebook while she stared at the man in front of her. He looked so good that she couldn’t stop looking at him. His light brown hair was falling on his eyes; he was wearing a white shirt that stuck to his body making her hot, and his jeans highlighted his beautiful thighs.

Lee Jinki didn’t have to wear anything special to be the most handsome man in college; at least for Daisy. She was sure she caught a virus, the Jinki virus. He was one her head 24/7 and she couldn’t help it. Even when she was sleeping he would show up and do things to her that she never experienced, things like a kiss…

Daisy blushed noticing his lips. Unfortunately she never got close enough to a guy to date let alone kiss. Jonghyun was the exception but he was like a brother to her.

Jinki his lips absent minded while he corrected her answers and she almost groaned with the gesture. What was wrong with her?!

It was a week since they started the tutoring lessons and every day she felt more and more attracted to him.

Daisy’s eyes didn’t leave his lips so she didn’t notice Jinki eyes on her, watching her attentive.

Jinki noticed how Daisy blinked, her eyes fixed on his face. What was wrong with her?!

She was actually pretty when she was concentrated on something; she was interesting and this last week they talked a lot. He even escorted her home, every day, after class. Jinki wanted Daisy to see him as a friend.  He enjoyed being around her and her smile was beautiful. Unfortunately she was always frowning and he wanted to change that.

Jinki couldn’t help but smile noticing how her hand was motionless over the paper and was slightly opened. What was she thinking? He wondered.

“Daisy?” He asked and she broke from the spell that unknowing to Jinki, was him.

“Ah…yes?”

“Are you feeling ok?”

“Super!” Daisy said looking down at her notebook once again.  Her hands were shaking, and her heart was beating too fast while she remembered how he kissed her the night before, unfortunately only in one of her dreams.

“Can you tutor me too?” Jonghyun asked the brown haired man while he played with his back pack.

Earlier he saw Jinki alone sitting at the bleachers and decided to keep him company.

“Sure…can you pay?” Jinki smiled showing a row of perfect white teeth.

“I can! I really need to pass this year or my dad will kill me!” He also wanted to sabotage Jinki’s session tutoring with Daisy. He was acting like a jealous bastard but he liked Daisy too much to give up on her so easily.

Jinki nodded his eyes moving away from Jonghyun to something in front of him. Daisy was climbing the bleachers and Jinki was looking at her like she was sunshine.

“Damn!” Jonghyun muttered. Jinki was into her too.

“Hi Jonghyun!” Daisy said as her usually self until her eyes set on Jinki. Her cheeks were a little pink and she blinked her eyes cutely and nervously. “Hi Jinki! You called me?”

“Yes! Did you bring my money?”

Daisy felt sad and angered. Jinki only called her to ask for the money of the tutoring lessons?! How disappointing.

She opened her bag and took her wallet out to give him the money. He grabbed the moneyand tuck it away on his pocket.

“Today at 6’oclock in front of the amusement park!” He said jumping the bleachers like he used to do.

“What?” she asked confused. What was he talking about?

“The contract?! It’s my first lesson! See you later! Dress prettily!” He blinked an eye at her and Daisy’s knees almost gave in. Jinki virus was interfering on her body right functioning.

Jonghyun stared sadly at her. They were already dating? A contract?

Daisy didn’t tell him anything anymore.

“What was that about?” He asked Daisy who looked back at himm lost on her thoughts.

“A stupid contract we made. Don’t worry we are still enemies.”

Daisy remembered the stupid contract. He brought it the next day after they talked about it. There, beside the salary she was going to pay him he added a condition.

“What’s this? Make Daisy learn how to smile?” She asked frowning at him.

“I told you I would accept tutoring you if you did everything I wanted you to do.”

“I remember. I’m not senile. But I thought you meant carrying your books or doing you favors. What’s this? I know how to smile!”

“No you don’t! I’m going to teach you how to be happy.” Jinki said sweetly his eyes not leaving hers.

It was almost a confession but Daisy knew he didn’t see her as a girl. “I don’t date anyone right now.” He said to her once and she wondered why?!

“Ok! I’m looking forward to these lessons…”

And now they had a lesson at the amusement park. How she wished it was a date instead…

30sem2c.jpg

Daisy walked awkwardly to the front gate of the park. Jinki was already waiting for her, wearing a beautiful light blue sweater and black jeans. She felt uncomfortable when she noticed his eyes roaming over her body.

“Why didn’t you dress up?” he asked disappointed.

“I did!” Daisy answered back. She was wearing new clothes.

Jinki sighed looking at her white sneakers, blue jeans and black shirt.

“Ok. Ok. I know what we are going to do for next lesson.”

“What?”

“Shopping and dressing prettily! It also can be fun!" He grabbed her arm and pulled her to the ticket booth.

Daisy was going to take her wallet off when he paid for both of them.

“What are you doing?”

Man pay at dates right? Maybe that was a date after all.

“Part of the money of the tutoring will go to your lessons. It’s on the contract. The small words….”

Damn you should read everything before signing something. And damn that wasn’t a date after all. Just business!

They entered the park and stared at all attractions.

“Ok? Where do we start?” he said rubbing his hands and Daisy almost cried. She hated amusement parks.

Or did she?!

Two hours after, they already rode half of the rides and Daisy was excited and tired all at the same time.

She sat on a bench watching Jinki who volunteered to buy cotton candy for her.

Jinki was sweet and acted funny all afternoon, telling her a bunch of funny jokes to make her less nervous while they were waiting on the roller coaster. But what made Daisy smile more was when he grabbed her hand and held it through all the ride duration. She didn’t know what was making her heart jump on her chest, if it was the ride or his touch.

However that “date” was a success. They were like two kids trying all attractions and Daisy couldn’t stop smiling.

Jinki come back with the cotton candy and sat by her side. She grabbed a piece of it and they shared it, without talking. For the first time since they entered the park there was silence between them. It wasn’t awkward though, Daisy felt good around him and Jinki started humming a little song she couldn’t recognize. Then she noticed two girls, on the other side of the street staring at them. They were from their college and they saw Daisy and Jinki together. The rumors the next day would be many.

“Oh no…” She mumbled.

“It’s ok! Let them talk!” Jinki calmly said, still eating his cotton candy.

So he noticed them too and didn’t say anything or felt worried. Daisy was warm inside; at least for a while she could pretend they were a couple.

Jinki didn’t mind the rumors. He was a lucky guy since Daisy was pretty, interesting and smart. Who wouldn’t want to be in a rumor with her? Besides he didn’t care about what others think. He never did.

They walked back home since it was getting dark already and Daisy was clearly tired.

Jinki spent their way home talking about silly things and she laughed so much that the way home felt short. Daisy wanted to stay by his side longer. Maybe that contract wasn’t a bad idea after all.

They stopped at her door and he gave her bag back to her.

“Lesson 1 accomplished. Three hours of pure fun! It’s awesome right?” Jinki said leaning on the gate of her house.

“I was a little scared sometimes…but yes. Thank you!”

Jinki nodded absent minded staring at the way the light from the street lamp made Daisy’s eyes shine.

“Why are you called Daisy?” He asked suddenly.

“My mom always liked the flower…”

“It suits you! Simplicity, purity, and…beauty.”

Daisy stared at him wondering what he meant. Was he implying that she was beautiful?!

Jinki was really sweet and she didn’t know what to say so she did an unimaginable thing and quickly kissed his cheek.

Jinki stared at her while she swiftly retreated to her front door.

“Thanks for everything!” she said without turning back and disappeared inside her house.

Jinki stood there motionless. His heart was beating like it always did every time he was nervous or excited about something. He was clearly confused. Lately Daisy was in his mind all the time, and every time she smiled or touched him he couldn’t help but feel happy and ecstatic about it. And that was the reason he also made the contract. He could say he wanted to be her friend, but friends don’t feel butterflies on their stomach every time they hold hands after they leave the roller coaster, or smile like a fool when they see their friend having fun and laughing.

He turned around and made his way back home. Jinki was truly confused.

30sem2c.jpg

Students babbling entered the classroom but Daisy stayed by the door waiting for Jinki. She wanted to greet him and hear his voice before starting her day. Since last night she decided to enjoy his existence in her life fully. Besides that kiss changed everything! Now he clearly knew she had feelings for him right?! She isn’t the kind of person to kiss anyone if it didn’t have a bigger meaning.

“Aren’t you going in?” Sang Hee asked stopping in front of Daisy holding her books.

“I’m waiting…I mean the air is fresher outside the classroom so I will stay here a little longer.”

Sang Hee stared at her frowning, clearly suspicious of Daisy’s answer but she entered the room leaving her friend behind. Rumors of her and Jinki dating where everywhere but she didn’t ask anything afraid of Daisy’s answer. She knew she hated the boy, or did she?!

Daisy played with her feet staring at the end of the corridor, waiting for a brown haired boy that she clearly liked a lot.

Jinki appeared at the top of the stairs walking on her direction and her heart jumped. She searched his eyes nervous, waiting for recognition, maybe a smile or a hand waving. Instead he seemed surprised and maybe a little evasive.

“Hi?” Daisy tried her best to not show that she was nervous, a little smile escaping her lips.

“Good morning.” He forced a smile staring inside the classroom, his eyes not focusing in anything and she knew he was nervous and maybe avoiding her.

“Yesterday…” Daisy started biting her lip. She didn’t know what to say and she was giving him a cue so he could say it for herself.

“We need to talk!” He stated firmly. “After class at the bleachers.” He passed by her moving to his seat.

Daisy swallowed hard and followed after him sitting on the seat in front of Jinki. She didn’t know if she should be happy or sad. Was he going to tell her that he noticed her feelings for her and reject her or was he having feeling too?! Either way she didn’t listen to anything in class and spent all of it drawing little hearts around the word Jinki in her notebook.

30sem2c.jpg

After class they walked to the bleachers in silence while Daisy analyzed all the possible things he could say to her.

He slowly climbed the bleacher and gestured for her to sit. Daisy sat right away and stared at Jinki in front of her, watching all the small gestures, trying to find any clue about what he had to say.

Jinki didn’t sleep at all last night. He had an idea about what he was feeling but having a relationship now wasn’t part of his plans. He didn’t have the time or mind to have one at the moment. So he decided to tell her the truth and spare her for the disappointment and hurt.

“Is it about the tutoring?” she asked after a while when she noticed that he was having a hard time talking. It was the first time he acted like that. He was always so good talking about what was on his mind.

“No. I can still tutor you…”

“Still?” Daisy felt all her body tense. What he had to say was probably not a good thing.

“It seems you mistook me yesterday. The date…I mean, us going to the amusement park didn’t have a special meaning. We are just friends.”

He cleared his throat watching her carefully but Daisy didn’t reveal her thoughts.

“I don’t want to date you Daisy; I’m not interest in a relationship so I wanted to clarify it. You seemed like you got a wrong impression from yesterday and I don’t want to hurt you.”

“You don’t!” Daisy said firmly standing up “Don’t get me wrong Lee Jinki. You probably think you are so almighty that I would fall for your charms. I know it’s only a contract. Don’t even say you are my friend. You are my employee, only that.” She moved down the bleachers leaving him surprised looking at her back.

Jinki was hurt with her words and sat down confused. He was only an employee, not even a friend?! Unknowingly to him, Daisy retreated quickly to the bathroom so he couldn’t see her tears.

_:^:_

Tutoring kept going for two more weeks and after the awkward first days they started acting more normal. Jinki pretended things were fine and Daisy promised to herself that she would study so much that she would defeat him and get her little revenge for him not liking her.

The rumors about them dating started to disappear when students noticed how cold Daisy was to her supposed boyfriend.

“Are you going to the party?” Sang Hee asked sitting in front of Daisy that was alone at the library reading. Once again Jinki disappeared somewhere else. Not that she cared now, maybe just a little.

“I don’t party!” Daisy said turning a page of the book.

Her friend grabbed it covering the words with her hand so she could get Daisy’s attention.

“Please? I want to go and I don’t know anyone. Besides its Jonghyun’s birthday party! He is your friend. Please?”

“I’m not interested. Take someone else.” She pulled the book returning to her reading.

“I think Jinki is going!”

Daisy flinched a little but tried to pretend that it didn’t affect her. He never went to parties before.

“I don’t care!”

Sang Hee sighed and rested her head on the table.

“You know how I feel about Jonghyun. Please come with me. I want to be there for him on his birthday.”

“I don’t want to!” Daisy stubbornly answered. Parties were loud, with drunken people dancing and making out, doing everything she despised. She liked her quiet life where she could listen to her music while reading romantic novels.

Daisy phone rang and she searched for it in her bag while Sang Hee complained about Daisy lack of love for her as a friend.

Jinki name appeared on the screen and Daisy’s signaled for Sang Hee to be quiet so she could answer.

“Yes?”

“Hi. How are you?” He asked with his gentle voice sounding like he actually missed her and was interested in her well-being. Liar!

“What do you want?”

“Lesson two tomorrow. Meet me at the mall. We need to buy a nice dress for the party.”

“What party?” Daisy asked knowing quiet well what he meant. Sang Hee raised her head curious, listening to their conversation.

“Jonghyun Birthday! Four o’clock at the mall! See ya!”

Sang Hee watched Daisy attentively waiting for her to talk.

“Guess we are going to the party after all!”

“YES! I love you Daisy! And I guess I love Lee Jinki! I don’t know how he did it but he made you go to a party!”

It was only because of the contract. Daisy always kept her word so she would stick to it. She didn’t have any interest in a party or going with him shopping. She was erasing him from her heart.

30sem2c.jpg

Erasing Jinki was going to be a difficult task if he kept being the most cute and handsome man on Earth.

They visited some clothing stores with him staring at her waiting for her to choose a dress. He would pay for it since it was part of the contract but money wasn’t the problem. Daisy didn’t wear dresses and she didn’t like anything and Jinki was starting to get tired.

“I can always bring a skirt to the party. I have some…”

“No way! I’m going to choose one then.” He awkwardly walked in the middle of the women clothes searching on the racks quickly and touching the fabrics.

Daisy crossed her arms and watched him hypnotized. He was so handsome, his eyebrows plunged into a frown, while he pulled a dress out from the racks; and for a second Daisy forgot about her plan to erase him. How could she forget someone that made her heart flutter like that? She never felt as happy as she felt when she was with him. But at the same time he was the one who hurt her the most. Daisy wasn’t used to share her feelings or open her heart and he slowly invaded it and didn’t want to take responsibility for it?! He was cruel!

“This one!” He said pulling a beautiful and simple teal dress from the rack.

Daisy quickly cleaned her eyes but he could see she was crying.

“What’s wrong?” Jinki asked worried.

“Nothing! Give me the damn dress!” she answered angry grabbing it and walked to the dressing room.

Jinki leaned on the rack suddenly losing all his energy. He couldn’t see her cry! She was so much more beautiful when she smiled around him, but it was more and more uncommon now.

30sem2c.jpg

Daisy stared at herself on the mirror and the girl on it looked surprisingly beautiful. With the help of Sang Hee she did her makeup, curled her hair and was wearing the dress.

The dress…

When she left the dressing room she saw him gulp while observing her and the sensation was powerful and made her all warm inside. He totally checked her out.

“You look beautiful!” he faltered as if he was out of breath and for moments she felt that maybe he had feelings for her; but quickly he looked away saying that they should worry up because he had some place to go.

It wasn’t a special dress at all; it was sleeveless, all made of lace with a brown belt on the waist, and ending a little above her knees. It was so simple but maybe it was strange for him to see her looking so feminine.

Daisy didn’t wear hells, she choose black ballerinas instead so she almost had to drag Sang Hee to the party since she barely could walk with her high heels.

“I’m so nervous!” her friend mumbled blinking her perfect eyelashes.

They quickly found Jonghyun in the middle of a group of students.

“Daisy!” He exclaimed surprised and froze staring at her.

“Yes I came!” She said opening her arms and stating the obvious. “I’ll probably won’t stay until the end though!”

“You are beautiful!” Strangely Jonghyun words didn’t affect her like Jinki ones and she sadly asked Jonghyun where she could find water. No way would she drink alcohol.

Daisy almost asked about Jinki. He probably was there already, since they arrived late but she bit her lip instead and walked to the kitchen in search for her drink.

Jonghyun eyes followed her while Sang Hee blushed watching how handsome he was and making a mental list of all the things she loved on him.

It was easy to find water and Daisy stayed on the kitchen watching, through the window, the trees moving outside. She was bored and Daisy was almost making the decision to go back home when she heard a big commotion on the living room.

“Jonghyun my friend! I didn’t bring a gift but I have something else to give you!”

It was clearly Jinkis voice. She could recognize it as quick as a baby recognizes his mother. She walked quickly to the living room where a clearly tipsy Lee Jinki was on top of a table talking to a clearly amused and tipsy Jonghyun.

“I’m going to sing you a song!” Everyone cheered and laughed and that was going to clearly be the death of Jinkis reputation. The next morning everyone would make fun of him for sure. But why did she care about it?! He didn’t care about her after all, right?!

Jinki stumbled a little laughing like a little boy and Daisy looked away. She was lying to herself. He cared about her. Since he came to her class he tried everything so he could be her friend and in the end Jinki made that stupid contract to “teach her to smile”.

His only mistake was not noticing that he was already the reason to make her smile. She didn’t need any lesson, she needed him and she wouldn’t let him kill his college life. Not that he probably cared much though.

She quickly moved in the middle of the students pushing them around and grabbed his hand on the precise moment he opened his mouth to sing.

“Don’t do it!” she pleaded him making him stare down at her hand and slowly at her face the smile on his face giving place to an intense look she couldn’t define.

Daisy was beautiful and he wanted to hug her so badly. Ever since she entered the party he hid away on a corner watching her talking with Jonghyun and then running away to the kitchen. His Daisy was like a flower. She was just a bud waiting to bloom and soon other man would notice her. That thought made something break inside him and when he noticed he already had drunk more than he probably should.

Jinki held her hand back for a second before he released her.

“It’s ok! I’m good! I used to sing all the time before…” He lowered his voice and got closer to her, inches for her face. Daisy couldn’t stop staring at his eyes and lips. “It’s a secret! Don’t tell anyone!” He grinned at her and she stood there looking up at him when he started singing.

Soon everyone on the room started to quiet down, while he sang The road to me. Some started accompanying him, others just watched in delight. He was good, he wasn’t lying after all.

Daisy knew she was stuck on a spell and there was no way out for her. She was definitely feeling what her heroines on the books felt. She was in love with him and she was tired of being a coward. It was time to start living her life for once not her dad’s life. She didn’t care about grades now, she only cared about him. She was blind all this time and now she clearly saw the light. Doing what you love and being with whom you love is way better than your name on a list.

Jinki stared at Daisy his words dancing on his lips like they were meant for her.

“Now, how should I express my feelings? Although everything changes, I will love you with my true heart…”

“Awesome! But I’m not gay Jinki!” Jonghyun interrupted him quickly grabbing his friend arm and hugging him. Everyone laughed and congratulated Jinki, most of them girls, clearly under his spell too.

Jonghyun watched Daisy and he knew he stopped Jinki on time. Although he thought he did the right thing he felt bad about it. He wanted Daisy to be happy and she clearly was happy around Lee Jinki, and he wasn’t a bad person. However Jonghyun only wanted to confess to her and fight for Daisy’s heart one last time.

Daisy didn’t know what to do so she waited for the other students to move away from Jinki so she could talk with him. But a group of girls was clinging to him, asking how he learned to sing like that and why he never acted manly like he did during his little performance.

Daisy felt his eyes on her for a second, and all her body burned remembering how he sang that part of the song to her. Did it mean something?

She couldn’t make any more suppositions or ask him because at that moment one brunette, clearly drunk approached him hugging Jinki.

“Donald that was awesome!”

“Thank you? I’m Jinki by the way!” He said grabbing her shoulders and pulling her arms away from him.

“Whatever! You were so intense and y and nerdy. I like it!” And then she joined her lips with his.

Daisy couldn’t explain what was happening and she took a little while to understand it. Lee Jinki was kissing another girl and he wasn’t pushing her away.

She disappointedly moved in the middle of the other students bumping into some. She was still incredulous and couldn’t cry even though her heart was a mess.

“Daisy are you ok?” Jonghyun grabbed her shoulders stopping her. She sadly looked back at him.

“I want to go home.”

“I’ll take you!” he quickly offered.

“Alone!” She mumbled releasing herself from his hands and stumbling her way away from the party.

Jonghyun could have gone after her but he knew he wasn’t the one she wanted to follow her. He saw Lee Jinki pushing drunken girl away from him and helping her sit on the couch, while he looked around, probably looking for a girl in a teal dress.

30sem2c.jpg

After party headaches are very common! However, not for Daisy because one: she doesn’t drink alcohol and two she never goes to parties.

Nonetheless today her head is exploding. She spent the majority of her night crying over a man that clearly didn’t have any feeling for her and the other part staring at the ceiling waiting for time to pass by. Love disappears with time right? She wondered how long she would have to wait for that sickness to go away.

She passed by the dean’s list without even looking at it. Suddenly grades weren’t her biggest worry. Daisy walked her way to the classroom praying that he missed school today because he was clearly tipsy the night before. But to her disappointment he was on the top of the stairs waiting for her.

Jinki slowly rose up when he saw Daisy. She looked horrible and he didn’t look great too. He was so worried about her the night before that he couldn’t sleep at all. He even thought about calling but he didn’t know what to say.

Lee Jinki never cared about what others think of him, but when it was about Daisy he cared. That’s how he knew she was special.

“You came!” He said smiling a little.

“Of course, I can’t miss class!” she said not looking at his eyes, and walking by him like he was nothing.

“Daisy I need to talk with you.”

She kept walking not answering and he followed her.

“Lee Jinki the college official singer!” Someone screamed on the other end of the hallway and Daisy closed her eyes upset. Jinki waved distracted still following her.

“Daisy please, listen to me.”

“My head hurts I don’t feel like talking.” She mumbled and he grabbed her arm gently making her stop.

“Listen to me. It’s really quick. I didn’t kiss that girl. She surprised me…”

“I really don’t care. It’s not like we are anything to each other.” She spit it out venomously.

“Don’t say that. You know it’s not true…”

Daisy was tired of that. First Jinki isn’t interested in her, then he wants to make her smile, but he wants to be only friend; but friends don’t sing love lines to each other…

Daisy released her arm and let her feelings take over her.

“Yes it’s not true. But I’m confused Lee Jinki. I’m only your employer! It’s not like I have a say on who you kiss and I shouldn’t care. But I do! I do….” She felt her voice shaking “because I think I….” She looked around her seeing if the corridor was empty. “I think I love you…”

The words hang in the hair for a second before he grabbed her arm again and pulled her gently to him, his face closer to hers like the day before when he sang to her.

Daisy held her breath before she closed her eyes automatically. Her instincts kicking in making her open her lips to welcome his.

And in a split second Lee Jinki kissed her slowly savoring the moment. It was probably a short kiss but for Daisy it was like eternity.  The lips she dreamed and fantasied about for hours while he tutored her, imagining how they felt or tasted finally touched hers.

She slowly opened her eyes when it ended not knowing how to react. Did it really happen?! Was she still sleeping on her bed, dreaming with that moment?!

It was her first kiss and it happened in a suddenly and unexpected way.

Jinki didn’t give her time to reflect because he once again surprised her and made her heart stop.

“Daisy, I think I love you too.”

Chapter 10: I love this. I actually read urgent matters first before this. The themes and atmosphere are so different but both are so so beautifully written. Urgent matters makes me feel so so sinful and wicked and mature while this story brings back memories of my innocent first love in college. I should have fooled around during college instead of always trying to be nice goody girl...
You're a great author. Keep writing <3
