A Matter of Seconds

When the Lights Go Out

A/N; I made some changes to the stuff I added in the prolouge, so please I would appreciate it if you read the chapter from start to finish

“You know I don’t drink,” Key mumbled, reflexively catching the bottle of alcohol thrown his way.

“C’mon Key, it wouldn’t hurt to try it, nothing’s going to happen,” Jonghyun pressed, a lazy smile splayed across his face.  He was unprepared as the bottle was thrown back at him, hitting him squarely in the chest.

“You promised you wouldn’t do this if I agreed to hang out with you and your friends,” Key hissed, eyes narrowing at his boyfriend, or if this kept up, soon to be ex-boyfriend.

“Fine, be a killjoy,” Jonghyun muttered, aware of the stares Key and him were receiving from his “friends.”, otherwise known as Jiwook, Yuhan, Sungho and Youngsu

To be honest, they were just a bunch of seniors from the High School that he attended, who would occasionally invite him along to hangout or go partying. Most of these times ended with them all getting drunk off their asses, and in his case, having to call Key to come pick him up; considering they were always too drunk to walk two feet in front of themselves without falling, much less drive home.

Key huffed and heatedly took a seat, crossing his legs as he glared at Jonghyun with spite.

Jonghyun just turned away, opening the bottle Key had thrown at him and chugging it, completely aware of the cheers and whoops he received from the seniors, as well as the scowl his boyfriend sent his way.

“Give me the keys!” Key growled, jumping up as he tried to snatch back the keys to the car from the seniors teasing grip.

“Awe, what a feisty boyfriend you have here Jjong,” The man, Jiwook, who was obviously the leader of the 4 seniors, smirked down at Kibum, who was still trying to make a grab at the keys, which were kept high out of his reach.

“C’mon Key, just get in the car,” Jonghyun pleaded, an obvious slur to his voice; the result of the alcohol he had previously consumed.

“ you Jonghyun,” Key spat. “Especially if you think I’m getting in the car with this drunk- idiot driving!” Key’s shout rang throughout the campfire clearing.

“Hey cool it kid,” Jiwook growled, obvious anger in his voice as he glared at Key.

“Key, I promise nothing will happen, just get in the car,” Jonghyun once again pleaded, approaching his boyfriend and throwing an arm around his waist, hugging him close. Key was having none of that though.

“Get your ing hands off me,” He snapped, removing Jonghyun’s arm off his waist, and crossing his arms against his chest. “Fine, I’ll get in the car, but after this, I swear Jonghyun, we are over!”

“Key, C’mon don’t be-“

Over,” Key snarled, opening the door and climbing into the cramped space of the backseat. A second later Jonghyun joined him, and Key found himself crammed in-between Jonghyun and one of the seniors. Meanwhile the remaining three seniors took their seats in the front.

Key made a face of displeasure as he resisted the urge to plug his nose. The entire car reeked of alcohol. He sighed and leant his head back against the seat.

A second later the truck hummed to life and they began to make their way back to the city

Key felt sick. For an hour he had sat in the back of the car, which still continued to swerve down the empty streets, high above the speed limit.

Key knew that if they happened to be spotted by the police, they would be in deep . After all, a single whiff of the car’s interior could easily tell anybody that the occupants had been drinking; the entire vehicle reeked of booze and alcohol.

“Jonghyun, I want out of the car,” Key whispered to his boyfriend. He ignored the shocked look he received and instead focused on the city lights, which were gradually getting closer as they drove into the outskirts of Seoul.

“We’re almost there,” Jonghyun replied, not really all that anxious to tell the intoxicated third years that they needed to stop the vehicle.

“Jonghyun, I said I want out,” Key snapped, raising his voice a bit. The car was travelling at dangerous speeds, and Key had no wish to be inside of it once they reached the crowded city streets.

“And I said, we’re almost there, so relax a bit why don’t you,” Jonghyun couldn’t help but feel irritated; first his boyfriend completely ignores him and now Key was trying to order him around?

“ you!” Key spat absolutely infuriated. “Let me out of this car this instant or I swear I’ll-“

“You’ll what Key?” Jonghyun cut off the male. “Break up with me? Oh wait, you already have!”

“What the hell is going on back there?” Jiwook, who was at the wheel turned around, glaring, and clearly pissed off as well.

“Nothing, off!” Key growled, not in the mood to get into a debate with the older male. Instead he turned to give a desperate look at Jonghyun. “Please, just let me out?”

“The hell is your boyfriend going on about Jjong?” Yuhan, the senior who was sitting beside Key, questioned.

“Yeah Jjong, I thought you said he was cool!” Youngsu demanded, clearly as annoyed as everyone else in the vehicle.

“Would you all just shut-up?” Jonghyun snapped. He couldn’t handle everyone yelling at him at the same time. Especially when one of them was Key.

“You're ordering me around now Jonghyun?” Jiwook spun around in his seat, completely forgetting he was supposed to be driving. No one else seemed to notice either, except for Key, whose eyes went wide.

Key tried to tell the senior to turn back around, but no one was listening to him, to absorbed in the debate between Jiwook and Jonghyun.

Out of the corner of his eye’s Key saw something streak onto the road, but before he could even warn the others the car collided. The sound of shattering glass echoed throughout the vehicle as the windshield was shattered. Key was lurched forward, his seatbelt digging painfully into his ribs and neck.

A second later the vehicle came to a screeching halt as the senior came to his senses and slammed down on the breaks. The shouts from the other occupants in the car sounded above the harsh noise.

Key didn’t move an inch, completely frozen in his seat. A groan escaped his lips and he brought a hand up to his mouth.

He was going to be sick.

Minho leant back against the brick wall of a shop. The cool night breeze blew through his hair, but he didn’t move. An anxious smile stretched across his face as excitement bubbled up inside of him. It felt like he had been waiting there for ages. It was a miracle the shop owner hadn’t told him off for loitering.

Looking down, he sent a quick glance at his watch which confirmed his suspicions. He had indeed been waiting there for almost an hour.

A sigh escaped his lips and he turned to face the glass, quickly making sure his hair was perfect.

As the minutes ticked by, he began to wonder if maybe his date had stood him up. Just as he was about to leave, a blur streaked across the street, and a second later a young boy, probably around a year younger than himself, stood panting in front of him.

“S-Sorry I’m la-late,” Taemin gasped out between pants. “Dance ran a little long,” He explained, standing straight as he regained his breath. He felt bad; their reservations had been made for 10’ 0clock sharp. It was now past 11. Few people wandered the streets, and shop lights slowly began to shut off as their owners prepared to head home to their families.

Minho only smiled, ruffling his boyfriend’s hair. “Its fine, I’m sure we can find someplace that still open,” Of course he was a bit disappointed; the reservation he had made had cost him all his earnings for the past 2 months. But now, looking down at the cute face of his boyfriend, he couldn’t bring himself to be angry. “I know of a 24/7 sandwich shop open a couple blocks away.”

Taemin nodded, suddenly gaining a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Sounds good to me,” He agreed, and before Minho had a chance to say anything, he took off. “Last one there buys the other ice-cream!” Taemin shouted, ignoring the surprised face of his boyfriend.

“Yah!” Minho shouted, breaking off into a sprint as he tried to catch up. Minho may have been the more athletic out of the two, but Taemin was fast, at least when he wanted to be.

They rounded the corner, both panting hard, Taemin a few feet ahead of Minho.

Minho was about to call out to his boyfriend when he caught sight of something that made his blood run cold. A car was hurtling down the streets at full speed, and Taemin, his mind focused solely on winning the race, was heading straight in the direction of the car, completely unaware of the speeding vehicle heading straight for him.

Time seemed to slow, seconds turned to minutes, minutes turned to hours, hours turned to days, days turned to weeks, and still Minho stood frozen. A sudden bolt of adrenaline flowed through him and he rushed forward. Finally regaining the ability to speak, his only thought was to save Taemin, to make him stop, anything to prevent the disaster that seemed to be approaching.

“Taemin watch out!”

Minho mentally cursed himself as the boy continued on, ignoring his words.

“Taemin-“His voice caught in his throat, and the next thing he knew he had let out a scream as the speeding car met the only object in its path; Taemin.

His feet failed him and he collapsed to his knees, only a few feet away from where his boyfriends crumpled body lay face down on the cement. He forced himself back to his feet and stumbled forward, his eyes staring unblinking at the limp figure before him.

“Taemin?” He murmured his voice barely above a whisper. The next thing he knew, he had collapsed to his knees next to the younger’s unconscious form. He could hear the shouts of the people around him, bystanders, but their voices sounded far off, as if they weren’t really there. His mind was focused solely on Taemin.

With gasping breaths, he reached out, his hand shaking uncontrollably and turned Taemin onto his back. He just about emptied the contents of his stomach onto the cement next to him. Taemin’s face, the only visible part of his body was covered in cuts and bruises, blood streaming down the side of his face from a large gash on the side of his head.  His right leg was twisted at an awkward angle and blood was slowly starting to pool beneath the youngers limp body.

“Oh my God,” Minho gasped, his hand reflexively checking for a pulse. “C’mon on, you’re going to be alright just hang in there!”

He turned to face the bystanders that were crowded around the two; his eye’s wide and delirious. “Someone call an ambulance!” He shouted desperately, hoping someone would heed his words. At the current moment, he didn’t think he could steady his hands enough to dial 911. He was vaguely aware of someone kneeling next to him, but his eye’s never left Taemin’s face.

“Hang in there Taemin, help is coming. People are coming, they’ll save you,” Despite his ramblings, Minho doubted the boy could hear him. He leant down, taking Taemin’s head and placing it in his lap, careful not to shift the boy’s injured limbs. With gentle hands he began the boys hair, whispering comforting words mainly intended for himself. He tried desperately to ignore the blood that soaked his clothes in a matter of seconds, but as the minutes ticked on and there was no sign of help he grew worried.

“Sir, I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to move,”

Minho’s head shot up to stare at a couple paramedics gazing worriedly down at him. Huh? When had they arrived?

When Minho made no move to get up, two police officers who had also arrived at the scene strode forward, pulling him away and to a waiting ambulance.

“What are you doing? Let me go!” Minho roared, struggling in their grip.

“He’s going into shock,” Minho caught bits and pieces of the conversation, but his mind was focused on the scene in front of him. He tried desperately to get loose as paramedics rushed over to his boyfriend, pushing aside another boy in their path.

Minho could do nothing but watch as they lifted the bloodied form of his boyfriend onto a stretcher, loaded him into an ambulance, and seconds later drove away, the ambulance’s sirens disappearing into the distance.
