﹅The Tear Collector

He sat in his chair, his back straight, eyes forward, and jaw set. No one dared disturb him. After a moment or two, even with all eyes turned and watching him, he slowly closed his eyes and brought the glass to his lips, those that were chapped. With a slightly trembling hand, he tipped the glass upward, the liquid pouring into his mouth as water would fill a pond when the dam was broken. He pursed his lips then, a thin, straight line, setting the glass on the side table next to him.

“Tell me, who was more tears for me now?” He said softly, his tongue erasing all the remains of the pure liquid that once touched them.

Because that was who he was. He was the tear collector. He took them all away, and never once did anyone question him. They willingly handed over their tears to be his burden, from the day he took them until the day he died. It was his job. What more could he ask for?

At first, he was just a happy-go-lucky kid who knew nothing of the horror the world had to offer. But then that all changed when his eyes opened to the world, when he saw all of the suffering and pain in everyones eyes as he passed them on the street. He was only a child then, and as he grew up he discovered that there needed to be more shoulders to lean on, more hands to hold, more bodies to hug.

So he started collecting.
